Abstract
Iron-catalyzed oxidative amination of benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds with anilines bearing electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) or electron-donating groups (EDGs) is realized based on simple variations of N-substituents on imidazolium cations in novel ionic Fe(III) complexes. The structural modification of the imidazolium cation resulted in regulation of the redox potential and the catalytic performance of the iron metal center. Using DTBP as oxidant, [HItBu][FeBr4] showed the highest catalytic activity for anilines bearing EWGs, while [HIPym][FeBr4] was more efficient for EDG-substituted anilines. This work provides alternative access to benzylamines with the advantages of both a wide substrate scope and iron catalysis.

Increasing the steric hindrance around the catalytic core of a self-assembled imine-based non-heme iron catalyst for C-H oxidation. RSC Adv 2020; 11:537-542. Abstract
Sterically hindered imine-based non-heme complexes 4 and 5 rapidly self-assemble in acetonitrile at 25 °C, when the corresponding building blocks are added in solution in the proper ratios. Such complexes are investigated as catalysts for the H2O2 oxidation of a series of substrates in order to ascertain the role and the importance of the ligand steric hindrance on the action of the catalytic core 1, previously shown to be an efficient catalyst for aliphatic and aromatic C-H bond oxidation. The study reveals a modest dependence of the output of the oxidation reactions on the presence of bulky substituents in the backbone of the catalyst, both in terms of activity and selectivity. This result supports a previously hypothesized catalytic mechanism, which is based on the hemi-lability of the metal complex. In the active form of the catalyst, one of the pyridine arms temporarily leaves the iron centre, freeing up a lot of room for the access of the substrate.

Abstract
[Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]Cl (pyalk = 2-(2'-pyridyl)-2-propanol) was synthesized and characterized crystallographically and electrochemically. Upon dissolution in water and acetonitrile, [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]Cl was found to form [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]+ and [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+, respectively. The Ru(ii/iii) couple of [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)Cl]+ was found to be relatively low compared to that of other Ru complexes in acetonitrile, but the Ru(iii/iv) couple was not significantly different than other Ru complexes bearing anionic ligands. Pourbaix diagrams were generated for [Ru(tpy)(phpy)(OH2)]+ (phpy = 2-phenylpyridine) and [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+ in water, and it was found that [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+ has a lower Ru(ii/iii) potential than [Ru(tpy)(phpy)(OH2)]+ under neutral to alkaline pH. [Ru(tpy)(pyalk)(OH)]+ was found to catalyze C-H bond hydroxylation of secondary alkanes and epoxidation of alkenes using cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate as the primary oxidant.

Abstract
The oxidation of a series of N-acetyl amino acid methyl esters with H2O2 catalyzed by a very simple iminopyridine iron(ii) complex 1 easily obtainable in situ by self-assembly of 2-picolylaldehyde, 2-picolylamine, and Fe(OTf)2 was investigated. Oxidation of protected aliphatic amino acids occurs at the α-C–H bond exclusively (N-AcAlaOMe) or in competition with the side-chain functionalization (N-AcValOMe and N-AcLeuOMe). N-AcProOMe is smoothly and cleanly oxidized with high regioselectivity affording exclusively C-5 oxidation products. Remarkably, complex 1 is also able to catalyze the oxidation of the aromatic N-AcPheOMe. A marked preference for the aromatic ring hydroxylation over Cα–H and benzylic C–H oxidation was observed, leading to the clean formation of tyrosine and its phenolic isomers. Amino acid derivatives are oxidized by the 1/H2O2 system. A marked preference for the aromatic over Cα–H and benzylic C–H oxidation is observed with phenylalanine.![]()

Abstract
![]()
Non-heme iron(II)
complexes of pentadentate N4Py (N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine)
type ligands undergo visible light-driven oxidation to their iron(III)
state in the presence of O2 without ligand degradation.
Under mildly basic conditions, however, highly selective base catalyzed
ligand degradation with O2, to form a well-defined pyridyl-imine
iron(II) complex and an iron(III) picolinate complex, is accelerated
photochemically. Specifically, a pyridyl-CH2 moiety is
lost from the ligand, yielding a potentially N4 coordinating ligand
containing an imine motif. The involvement of reactive oxygen species
other than O2 is excluded; instead, deprotonation at the
benzylic positions to generate an amine radical is proposed as the
rate determining step. The selective nature of the transformation
holds implications for efforts to increase catalyst robustness through
ligand design. Photoaccelerated oxidation
of an aminopyridyl ligand bound
to an Fe(III) ion to a well-defined imine-based Fe(II) complex involves
initial alkyl C−H deprotonation followed by reaction with O2 to form an alkyl peroxyl radical. Intramolecular C−H
abstraction followed by C−N bond cleavage yields picoline aldehyde
and a pyridyl-imine complex. The selectivity of the reaction prevents
further oxidation and holds implications for ligand degradation under
conditions used in oxidation catalysis with peroxides.

Abstract
An imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivative was unexpectedly obtained through the action of Fe2+ on a dynamic library of imines generated in situ via condensation of benzaldehyde and 2-picolylamine. The reaction product was easily isolated as the only nitrogen-containing product eluted from the chromatographic column. A reaction mechanism is proposed, in which combined kinetic and thermodynamic effects exerted by Fe2+ on the various steps of the complex reaction sequence are discussed. The Fe2+ nature of the added metal cation was found to be pivotal for the achievement of the imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivative as well as its amount in the reaction mixture. When the electronic effects were evaluated, gratifying yields were obtained only in the presence of moderately electron-releasing or moderately electron-withdrawing groups on the aldehyde reactant. No traces of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine derivatives were obtained for p-OCH3 and p-NO2 benzaldehyde.

Abstract
The growing interest in green chemistry has fueled attention to the development and characterization of effective iron complex oxidation catalysts. A number of iron complexes are known to catalyze the oxidation of organic substrates utilizing peroxides as the oxidant. Their development is complicated by a lack of direct comparison of the reactivities of the iron complexes. To begin to correlate reactivity with structural elements, we compare the reactivities of a series of iron pyridyl complexes toward a single dye substrate, malachite green (MG), for which colorless oxidation products are established. Complexes with tetradentate, nitrogen-based ligands with cis open coordination sites were found to be the most reactive. While some complexes reflect sensitivity to different peroxides, others are similarly reactive with either H2O2 or tBuOOH, which suggests some mechanistic distinctions. [Fe(S,S-PDP)(CH3CN)2](SbF6)2 and [Fe(OTf)2(tpa)] transition under the oxidative reaction conditions to a single intermediate at a rate that exceeds dye degradation (PDP=bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) bipyrrolidine; tpa=tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine). For the less reactive [Fe(OTf)2(dpa)] (dpa=dipicolylamine), this reaction occurs on a timescale similar to that of MG oxidation. Thus, the spectroscopic method presented herein provides information about the efficiency and mechanism of iron catalyzed oxidation reactions as well as about potential oxidative catalyst decomposition and chemical changes of the catalyst before or during the oxidation reaction.

Stereoselective Alkane Oxidation with meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic Acid (MCPBA) Catalyzed by Organometallic Cobalt Complexes. Molecules 2016; 21:molecules21111593. Abstract
Cobalt pi-complexes, previously described in the literature and specially synthesized and characterized in this work, were used as catalysts in homogeneous oxidation of organic compounds with peroxides. These complexes contain pi-butadienyl and pi-cyclopentadienyl ligands: [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(benzene)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C4Me4)Co(C6H6)]PF6 (1); diiodo(carbonyl)(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)cobalt, Cp*Co(CO)I2 (2); diiodo(carbonyl)(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, CpCo(CO)I2 (3); (tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(dicarbonyl)(iodo)cobalt, (C4Me4)Co(CO)2I (4); [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(acetonitrile)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C4Me4)Co(bipy)(MeCN)]PF6 (5); bis[dicarbonyl(B-cyclohexylborole)]cobalt, [(C4H4BCy)Co(CO)2]2 (6); [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(phen)I]PF6 (7); diiodo(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, [CpCoI2]2 (8); [(cyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [CpCo(bipy)I]PF6 (9); and [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(bipy)I]PF6 (10). Complexes 1 and 2 catalyze very efficient and stereoselective oxygenation of tertiary C–H bonds in isomeric dimethylcyclohexanes with MCBA: cyclohexanols are produced in 39 and 53% yields and with the trans/cis ratio (of isomers with mutual trans- or cis-configuration of two methyl groups) 0.05 and 0.06, respectively. Addition of nitric acid as co-catalyst dramatically enhances both the yield of oxygenates and stereoselectivity parameter. In contrast to compounds 1 and 2, complexes 9 and 10 turned out to be very poor catalysts (the yields of oxygenates in the reaction with cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane were only 5%–7% and trans/cis ratio 0.8 indicated that the oxidation is not stereoselective). The chromatograms of the reaction mixture obtained before and after reduction with PPh3 are very similar, which testifies that alkyl hydroperoxides are not formed in this oxidation. It can be thus concluded that the interaction of the alkanes with MCPBA occurs without the formation of free radicals. The complexes catalyze oxidation of alcohols with tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP). For example, tert-BuOOH efficiently oxidizes 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone in 98% yield if compound 1 is used as a catalyst.

Abstract
In the title mol-ecule, C13H12N2, all non-H atoms, except for those of the pyridine ring, are essentially coplanar, with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.025 Å. The mean plane of these atoms forms a dihedral angle of 80.98 (4)° with the pyridine ring. In the crystal, weak C-H⋯π inter-actions link the mol-ecules, forming a three-dimensional network.
