Probing Electronic Communications in Heterotrinuclear Fe–Ru–Fe Molecular Wires Formed by Ruthenium(II) Tetraphenylporphyrin and Isocyanoferrocene or 1,1′-Diisocyanoferrocene Ligands

Triiron Complex with N-Ferrocenyl Aminocarbyne Ligand Bridging a Diiron Core: DFT, Electrochemical, and Biological Insights

The first N-ferrocenyl aminocarbyne complex, [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Fc)}]CF3SO3 ([2]CF3SO3), was synthesized with an 88% yield from [Fe2Cp2(CO)4], isocyanoferrocene (CNFc), and methyl triflate. The synthesis proceeded through the intermediate formation of [Fe2Cp2(CO)3(CNFc)], 1. Multinuclear NMR experiments revealed the presence of cis and trans isomers for [2]CF3SO3 in organic solvents, in agreement with DFT outcomes. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies demonstrated one reduction process occurring prevalently at the diiron core and one oxidation involving the ferrocenyl substituent. The oxidation process is expected to favor the redox activation of [2]+ in a biological environment. Both [2]CF3SO3 and its phenyl analogue [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Ph)}]CF3SO3 ([3]CF3SO3), prepared for comparison, exerted moderate antiproliferative activity against the human cancer cell lines A431, HCT-15, PSN-1, 2008, and U1285. However, [2]CF3SO3 exhibited a higher cytotoxicity than [3]CF3SO3, showed a substantial ability to induce intracellular ROS production, and outperformed cisplatin in a three-dimensional SCLC cell model.

A Modular Strategy for Expanding Electron-Sink Capacity in Noncanonical Cluster Assemblies

A modular synthetic strategy is described whereby organometallic complexes exhibiting considerable electron-sink capacity may be assembled by using only a few simple molecular components. The Fe₂(PPh₂)₂(CO)₅ fragment was selected as a common electroactive component and was assembled around aromatic cores bearing one, two, or three isocyanide functional groups, with the resultant complexes possessing electron-sink capacities of two, four, and six electrons, respectively. The latter complex is noteworthy in that its electron-sink capacity was found to rival that of large multinuclear clusters (e.g., [Ni₃₂C₆(CO)₃₆]^6– and [Ni₃₈Pt₆(CO)₄₈]^6–), which are often considered as benchmarks of electron-sink behavior. Moreover, the modular assembly bearing three Fe₂(PPh₂)₂(CO)₅ fragments was observed to undergo reduction to a hexaanionic state over a potential window of about −1.4 to −2.1 V (vs Fc/Fc⁺), the relatively compressed range being attributed to potential inversions operative during the addition of the second, fourth, and sixth electrons. Such complexes may be designated noncanonical clusters because they exhibit redox properties similar to those of large multinuclear clusters yet lack the extensive network of metal–metal bonds and the condensed metallic cores that typify the latter.

By use of a modular synthetic strategy and relatively few molecular components, organometallic complexes exhibiting considerable electron-sink capacity have been characterized. Complexes bearing one, two, or three Fe₂(PPh₂)₂(CO)₅ fragments bound to aromatic isocyanide cores were found to possess electron-sink capacities of two, four, and six electrons, respectively, the latter rivaling the electron-sink capacity of large polynuclear cluster benchmarks.

Influence of Fine Ligand Substitution Modification of the Isocyanidometal Bridge on Metal-to-Metal Charge Transfer Properties in Class II-III Mixed Valence Complexes

The synthesis and characterization of Class II-III mixed valence complexes have been an interesting topic due to their special intermediate behaviour between localized and delocalized mixed valence complexes. To investigate the influence of the isocyanidometal bridge on metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) properties, a family of new isocyanidometal-bridged complexes and their one-electron oxidation products cis-[Cp(dppe)Fe-CN-Ru(L)₂ -NC-Fe(dppe)Cp][PF₆ ]_n (n=2, 3) (Cp=1,3-cyclopentadiene, dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, L=2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1[PF₆ ]_n ), 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (5,5'-dmbpy, 2[PF₆ ]_n ) and 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (4,4'-dmbpy, 3[PF₆ ]_n )) have been synthesized and fully characterized. The experimental results suggest that all the one-electron oxidation products may belong to Class II-III mixed valence complexes, supported by TDDFT calculations. With the change of the substituents of the bipyridyl ligand on the Ru centre from H, 5,5'-dimethyl to 4,4'-dimethyl, the energy of MMCT for the one-electron oxidation complexes changes in the order: 1³⁺ <2³⁺ <3³⁺ , and that for the two-electron oxidation complexes decreases in the order 1⁴⁺ >3⁴⁺ >2⁴⁺ . The potential splitting (ΔE_1/2 (2)) between the two terminal Fe centres for N[PF₆ ]₂ are the largest potential splitting for the cyanido-bridged complexes reported so far. This work shows that the smaller potential difference between the bridging and the terminal metal centres would result in the more delocalized mixed valence complex.

Accurate Prediction of the Excited States in the Fully Conjugated Porphyrin Tapes across the Full Spectral Range: A Story of the Interplay between π-π* and Intramolecular Charge-Transfer Transitions in Soft Chromophores

The ability of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods for the accurate prediction of the energies and oscillator strengths of the excited states in a series of fully conjugated meso-meso β-β β-β triple-linked porphyrin oligomers (porphyrin tapes 2-12) was probed in the gas phase and solution using several exchange-correlation functionals. It was demonstrated that the use of the hybrid B3LYP functional provides a good compromise for the accurate prediction of the localized π-π* and intramolecular charge-transfer transitions, thus allowing confident interpretation of the UV-vis-NIR spectra of porphyrin oligomers. The TDDFT-based sum-over-state (SOS) calculations for the porphyrin tape dimer 2 and trimer 3 as well as parent monomer 1 correctly predicted the signs and shapes of the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) signals in the low-energy region of the spectra.

Formation of iron(iii)–thiolate metallocyclophane using a ferrocene-based bis-isocyanide

Ferrocene-based iron–thiolate complexes are reported, and the kinetic product transforms to its corresponding thermodynamic product by the chelating effect of Fc(NC)₂.

Positional Isomers of Isocyanoazulenes as Axial Ligands Coordinated to Ruthenium(II) Tetraphenylporphyrin: Fine-Tuning Redox and Optical Profiles

Two isomeric ruthenium(II)/5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin complexes featuring axially coordinated redox-active, low-optical gap 2- or 6-isocyanoazulene ligands have been isolated and characterized by NMR, UV-vis, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopic methods, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The UV-vis and MCD spectra support the presence of the low-energy, azulene-centered transitions in the Q band region of the porphyrin chromophore. The first coordination sphere in new L₂RuTPP complexes reflects compressed tetragonal geometry. The redox properties of the new compounds were assessed by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical means and correlated with the electronic structures predicted by density functional theory and CASSCF calculations. Both experimental and theoretical data are consistent with the first two reduction processes involving the axial azulenic ligands, whereas the oxidation profile (in the direction of increasing potential) is exerted by the ruthenium ion, the porphyrin core, and the axial azulenic moieties.

Synthesis and characterization of 1'-(diphenylphosphino)-1-isocyanoferrocene, an organometallic ligand combining two different soft donor moieties, and its Group 11 metal complexes

The development of a practical synthesis of 1'-(diphenylphosphino)-1-aminoferrocene (2) and its P-borane adduct (2B) allowed the facile preparation of 1'-(diphenylphosphino)-1-isocyanoferrocene (1). This compound combining two specific soft-donor moieties was studied as a ligand for univalent Group 11 metal ions. The reactions of 1 with AgCl at 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 molar ratios only led to the coordination polymer [Ag₂(μ-Cl)₂(μ(P,C)-1)]_n (6), while those with Ag[SbF₆] provided the dimer [Ag₂(Me₂CO-κO)₂(μ(P,C)-1)₂][SbF₆]₂ and the quadruply-bridged disilver complex [Ag₂(μ(P,C)-1)₄][SbF₆]₂ (8), respectively. Addition of 1 to [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) afforded the mono- and the digold complex, [AuCl(1-κP)] (9) and [(μ(P,C)-1)(AuCl)₂] (10), depending on the reaction stoichiometry. Finally, the reaction of 1 with [Au(tht)₂][SbF₆] or halogenide removal from 9 with AgNTf₂ led to cationic dimers [Au₂(μ(P,C)-1)₂]X₂ (11, X = SbF₆ (a) or NTf₂ (b)). Catalytic tests in the Au-mediated isomerization of (Z)-3-methylpent-2-en-4-yn-1-ol to 2,3-dimethylfuran revealed that 11a and 11b are substantially less catalytically active than their analogues containing 1'-(diphenylphosphino)-1-cyanoferrocene as the ligand, most likely due to a stronger coordination of the isonitrile moiety, which prevents dissociation of the dimeric complexes into catalytically active monomeric species.

Exploring the Photovoltaic Properties of Metal Bipyridine Complexes (Metal = Fe, Zn, Cr, and Ru) by Density Functional Theory

The synthesis and characterisation of mononuclear Fe complexes were carried out by using bipyridine (Compound 1) at ambient conditions. Additionally, three more derivatives were designed by substituting the central Fe metal with Zn, Cr, and Ru (Compound 2, Compound 3, and Compound 4), respectively. The ground state geometry calculations were carried out by using density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G** (LANL2DZ) level of theory. We shed light on the frontier molecular orbitals, electronic properties, photovoltaic parameters, and structure–property relationship. The open-circuit voltage is a promising parameter that considerably affects the photovoltaic performance; thus, we have estimated its value by considering the complexes as donors whereas TiO2 and/or Si were used as acceptors. The solar cell performance behaviour was also studied by shedding light on the band alignment and energy level offset.

5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(1′-acetylferrocenyl)porphyrin: Electronic and structural effects of acetyl group on TFcP

Synthesis of tetrasubstituted-tetraferrocenylporphyrins containing an acetyl functional group on all ferrocenyl moiety has been performed, allowing the analysis of the effects of these groups in terms of geometry and electronic distribution. TFcPs exhibit interesting electrochemical properties, mostly due to electronic communication between the ferrocenyl substituents and the porphyrin core and the presence of four acetyl substituents do not affect significantly these properties. Nevertheless the functionalization leads to a more defined electronic transition, in particular in the Q region and a more stable TFcP in terms of chemical oxidation. This can openinig the way to modulate and/or improve the performance of TFcP in various applications.

Preparation, X-ray Structures, Spectroscopic, and Redox Properties of Di- and Trinuclear Iron-Zirconium and Iron-Hafnium Porphyrinoclathrochelates

The first hybrid di- and trinuclear iron(II)-zirconium(IV) and iron(II)-hafnium(IV) macrobicyclic complexes with one or two apical 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin fragments were obtained using transmetalation reaction between n-butylboron-triethylantimony-capped or bis(triethylantimony)-capped iron(II) clathrochelate precursors and dichlorozirconium(IV)- or dichlorohafnium(IV)-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrins under mild conditions. New di- and trinuclear porphyrinoclathrochelates of general formula FeNx₃((Bn-Bu)(MTPP)) and FeNx₃(MTPP)₂ [M = Zr, Hf; TPP = 5,10,15,20-tetraporphyrinato(2-); Nx = nioximo(2-)] were characterized by one-dimensional (¹H and ¹³C{¹H}) and two-dimensional (COSY and HSQC) NMR, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, UV-visible, and magnetic circular dichroism spectra, single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, as well as elemental analyses. Redox properties of all complexes were probed using electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical approaches. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical data suggestive of a very weak, if any, long-range electronic coupling between two porphyrin π-systems in FeNx₃(MTPP)₂ complexes. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations were used to correlate spectroscopic signatures and redox properties of new compounds with their electronic structures.
