Study of the Counter Cation Effects on the Supramolecular Structure and Electronic Properties of a Dianionic Oxamate-Based {Ni II2} Helicate. Molecules 2023; 28:molecules28052086. Abstract
Herein, we describe the synthesis, crystal structure, and electronic properties of {[K2(dmso)(H2O)5][Ni2(H2mpba)3]·dmso·2H2O}n (1) and [Ni(H2O)6][Ni2(H2mpba)3]·3CH3OH·4H2O (2) [dmso = dimethyl sulfoxide; CH3OH = methanol; and H4mpba = 1,3-phenylenebis(oxamic acid)] bearing the [Ni2(H2mpba)3]2- helicate, hereafter referred to as {NiII2}. SHAPE software calculations indicate that the coordination geometry of all the NiII atoms in 1 and 2 is a distorted octahedron (Oh) whereas the coordination environments for K1 and K2 atoms in 1 are Snub disphenoid J84 (D2d) and distorted octahedron (Oh), respectively. The {NiII2} helicate in 1 is connected by K+ counter cations yielding a 2D coordination network with sql topology. In contrast to 1, the electroneutrality of the triple-stranded [Ni2(H2mpba)3] 2- dinuclear motif in 2 is achieved by a [Ni(H2O)6]2+ complex cation, where the three neighboring {NiII2} units interact in a supramolecular fashion through four R22(10) homosynthons yielding a 2D array. Voltammetric measurements reveal that both compounds are redox active (with the NiII/NiI pair being mediated by OH- ions) but with differences in formal potentials that reflect changes in the energy levels of molecular orbitals. The NiII ions from the helicate and the counter-ion (complex cation) in 2 can be reversibly reduced, resulting in the highest faradaic current intensities. The redox reactions in 1 also occur in an alkaline medium but at higher formal potentials. The connection of the helicate with the K+ counter cation has an impact on the energy levels of the molecular orbitals; this experimental behavior was further supported by X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) experiments and computational calculations.

Abstract
Achieving fine control on the structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is mandatory to obtain target physical properties. Herein, we present how the combination of a metalloligand approach and a postsynthetic method is a suitable and highly useful synthetic strategy to success on this extremely difficult task. First, a novel oxamato-based tetranuclear cobalt(III) compound with a tetrahedron-shaped geometry is used, for the first time, as the metalloligand toward calcium(II) metal ions to lead to a diamagnetic CaII-CoIII three-dimensional (3D) MOF (1). In a second stage, in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal manner, the calcium(II) ions are replaced by terbium(III), dysprosium(III), holmium(III), and erbium(III) ions to yield four isostructural novel LnIII-CoIII [Ln = Tb (2), Dy (3), Ho (4), and Er (5)] 3D MOFs. Direct-current magnetic properties for 2-5 show typical performances for the ground-state terms of the lanthanoid cations [7F6 (TbIII), 6H15/2 (DyIII), 5I8 (HoIII), and 4I15/2 (ErIII)]. Analysis of the χMT data indicates that the ground state is the lowest MJ value, that is, MJ = 0 (2 and 4) and ±1/2 (3 and 5). Kramers' ions (3 and 5) exhibit field-induced emergent frequency-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility signals, which is indicative of the presence of slow magnetic relaxation typical of single-molecule magnets.

Abstract
Two closed and one open structural forms of the interpenetrated [Cu2(Tae)(Bpa)2](NO3)2·nH2O (H2Tae = 1,1,2,2-tetraacetylethane, Bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) cationic coordination polymer have been synthesized. Three crystallographically related interpenetrated "ths" cationic nets encapsulate water molecules and nitrate anions giving rise to the closed structural forms of [Cu2(Tae)(Bpa)2](NO3)2·nH2O. Depending on the location of water molecules and nitrate groups, two different closed forms with 5.5 and 3.6 crystallization water molecules have been obtained. The thermal activation of the closed structures gives rise to a 29% expansion of the unit cell. This closed to open transformation is reversible, and is triggered by the loss or uptake of solvent. The high pressure gas adsorption experiments show similar selectivity values towards CO2 for CO2/CH4 mixtures to that showed by some metal organic frameworks without unsaturated metal sites, and isosteric heats for CO2 adsorption similar to that for the HKUST-1 compound.

Abstract
Triple stranded Ni-metallacyclic complexes Na2.5[Ni2(bpcb)3]·0.5OH·18.5H2O (1) and Na2[Ni2(bpzcb)3]·16H2O (2), and double stranded Cu-metallacyclic complexes [Cu2(bpcb)2(H2O)2]·8H2O (3) and [Cu2(bpzcb)2(H2O)2]·4H2O (4) have been assembled from the tailored bisbidentate bridging ligands, 1,3-bis(pyrimidine-2-carboxamide)benzene (H2bpcb) and 1,3-bis(pyrazine-2-carboxamide)benzene (H2bpzcb), and the corresponding nitrate salts of the metal ions. Following the "complex as ligand" strategy, 1 can be assembled with either Ni2+, Co2+ ions or the [Mn(acen)Cl] complex to afford unique, neutral, bent trinuclear molecules [MIINi(bpcb)3]·xH2O (5 and 6) and the 2D honeycomb-like complex (PPh4){[Ni2(bpcb)3]2[Mn(acen)]3} (7), respectively. In these cases, the Ni2 units are linked to the corresponding metal ions through amidate oxygen atoms and the outward nitrogen atom of one of the pyrimidine rings of the bcpb ligand. The assembly of 2 with Ln3+ ions (Ln3+ = Tb, Gd) leads to one dimensional complexes of formula [{[Ni2(bpzcb)3]Tb(H2O)5}(CF3SO3)·THF·5H2O]n (8) and [{[Ni2(bpzcb)3]Ln(H2O)4(NO3)}·2THF·nH2O]n (9 and 10) (Ln3+ = Gd and Tb), where the dinuclear Ni2 units are joined to two Ln3+ ions exclusively through amidate oxygen atoms of two different ligands. The analyses of the magnetic data indicate that 1-4 exhibit intradinuclear ferromagnetic interactions between the metal ions through a spin polarisation mechanism, as supported by DFT calculations. Trinuclear complexes 5 and 6 show predominant antiferromagnetic coupling, which is a result of an antiferromagnetic interaction between one of the Ni2+ ions of the Ni2 unit and the M2+ ion through the pyrimidine bridging fragment that is stronger than the polarised ferromagnetic interaction between the Ni2+ ions through the bpcb ligand in the dinuclear [Ni2(bpcb)3]2- moiety. Complex 7 shows a dominant antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ni2+ and Mn2+, whereas the Ni2Ln (Ln3+ = Gd, Tb) chain complexes present ferromagnetic interactions inside the Ni2 mesocate unit as well as between the Ni2+ ions of the Ni2 unit and the Ln3+ ions. The magnetic exchange interactions in these new materials have been experimentally analysed and supported by theoretical DFT studies.
