Reactivity of a Fe(III)-Bound Methoxide Supported with a Tris(thiolato)phosphine Ligand: Activation of C-Cl Bond in CH2Cl2 by Nucleophilic Attack of a Fe(III)-OCH3 Moiety

Structural and Spectroscopic Evidence for a Side-on Fe(III)-Superoxo Complex Featuring Discrete O-O Bond Distances

The O-O bond length is often used as a structural indicator to determine the valence states of bound O₂ ligands in biological metal-dioxygen intermediates and related biomimetic complexes. Here, we report very distinct O-O bond lengths found for three crystallographic forms (1.229(4), 1.330(4), 1.387(2) Å at 100 K) of a side-on iron-dioxygen species. Despite their different O-O bond distances, all forms possess the same electronic structure of Fe(III)-O₂ ^•-, as evidenced by their indistinguishable spectroscopic features. Density functional theory and ab initio calculations, which successfully reproduce spectroscopic parameters, predict a flat potential energy surface of an η²-O₂ motif binding to the iron center regarding the O-O distance. Therefore, the discrete O-O bond lengths observed likely arise from differential intermolecular interactions in the second coordination sphere. The work suggests that the O-O distance is not a reliable benchmark to unequivocally identify the valence state of O₂ ligands for metal-dioxygen species in O₂-utilizing metalloproteins and synthetic complexes.

Recent Advances and Promises in Nitrile Hydratase: From Mechanism to Industrial Applications

Nitrile hydratase (NHase, EC 4.2.1.84) is one type of metalloenzyme participating in the biotransformation of nitriles into amides. Given its catalytic specificity in amide production and eco-friendliness, NHase has overwhelmed its chemical counterpart during the past few decades. However, unclear catalytic mechanism, low thermostablity, and narrow substrate specificity limit the further application of NHase. During the past few years, numerous studies on the theoretical and industrial aspects of NHase have advanced the development of this green catalyst. This review critically focuses on NHase research from recent years, including the natural distribution, gene types, posttranslational modifications, expression, proposed catalytic mechanism, biochemical properties, and potential applications of NHase. The developments of NHase described here are not only useful for further application of NHase, but also beneficial for the development of the fields of biocatalysis and biotransformation.

Methylene insertion into an Fe2S2 cluster: formation of a thiolate-bridged diiron complex containing an Fe-CH2-S moiety

Reduction of a thiolate-bridged FeIIFeIII complex leads to the cleavage of an Fe-S bond by the insertion of the methylene unit from CH2Cl2 to give a neutral FeIIFeIII complex with a novel Fe-CH2-S fragment. The structural and electrochemical differences of the alkylated and the non-alkylated Fe2S2 complexes are also examined.

Observation of Radical Rebound in a Mononuclear Nonheme Iron Model Complex

A nonheme iron(III) terminal methoxide complex, [FeIII(N3PyO2Ph)(OCH3)]ClO4, was synthesized. Reaction of this complex with the triphenylmethyl radical (Ph3C•) leads to formation of Ph3COCH3 and the one-electron-reduced iron(II) center, as seen by UV-vis, EPR, 1H NMR, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. These results indicate that homolytic Fe-O bond cleavage occurs together with C-O bond formation, providing a direct observation of the "radical rebound" process proposed for both biological and synthetic nonheme iron centers.

Carbon-sulphur cross coupling reactions catalyzed by nickel-based coordination polymers based on metalloligands

This work illustrates two Ni²⁺based coordination polymers and their utilization as reusable and heterogeneous catalysts for the C–S cross coupling reactions between assorted aromatic halides with thiophenol, cyclohexanethiol and ethanethiol.
