Two-Step Antiferromagnetic Transitions and Ferroelectricity in Spin-1 Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnetic Sr3NiTa2O9

Magnetic structure and properties of the honeycomb antiferromagnet [Na(OH2)3]Mn(NCS)3

We report the magnetic structure and properties of a thiocyanate-based honeycomb magnet [Na(OH2)3]Mn(NCS)3 which crystallises in the unusual low-symmetry trigonal space group P3̄. Magnetic measurements on powder samples show this material is an antiferromagnet (ordering temperature TN,mag = 18.1(6) K) and can be described by nearest neighbour antiferromagnetic interactions J = -11.07(4) K. A method for growing neutron-diffraction sized single crystals (>10 mm3) is demonstrated. Low temperature neutron single crystal diffraction shows that the compound adopts the collinear antiferromagnetic structure with TN,neut = 18.94(7) K, magnetic space group P3̄'. Low temperature second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements provide no evidence of breaking of the centre of symmetry.

Two-Dimensional Intercalating Multiferroics with Strong Magnetoelectric Coupling

Intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics that couple ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity are rare. Here, we present an approach to achieve 2D multiferroics using powerful intercalation technology. In this approach, metal atoms such as Cu or Ag atoms are intercalated in bilayer CrI₃ to form Cu(CrI₃)₄ or Ag(CrI₃)₄. The intercalant leads to the inversion symmetry breaking and produces a large out-of-plane electric polarization with a low transition barrier and a small reversal electric field, exhibiting excellent 2D ferroelectric properties. In addition, due to charge transfer between the intercalated atoms and bilayer CrI₃, the interlayer coupling transits from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, and the intralayer ferromagnetic coupling is also enhanced. Furthermore, the built-in electric polarization causes a distinct surface magnetization difference, generating a strong magnetoelectric coupling with a coefficient larger than that of Fe, Co, and Ni thin films. Our work paves a practical path for 2D multiferroics, which may have crucial applications in spintronics.

Direct Evidence for an Intermediate Multiferroic Phase in LiCuFe2(VO4)3

Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, dielectric, and electric polarization of LiCuFe₂(VO₄)₃ have been investigated. Two sequential antiferromagnetic transitions at T_N1 ∼ 9.95 K and T_N2 ∼ 8.17 K are observed under zero magnetic field. Although a dielectric peak at T_N1 is clearly identified, the measured pyroelectric current also exhibits a sharp peak at T_N1, implying the magnetically relevant ferroelectricity. Interestingly, another pyroelectric peak around T_N2 with an opposite signal is observed, resulting in the disappearance of electric polarization below T_N2. Besides, the electric polarization is significantly suppressed in response to external magnetic field, evidencing a remarkable magnetoelectric effect. These results suggest the essential relevance of the magnetic structure with the ferroelectricity in LiCuFe₂(VO₄)₃, deserving further investigation of the underlying mechanism.

Magnetoelectricity in multiferroics: a theoretical perspective

The key physical property of multiferroic materials is the existence of coupling between magnetism and polarization, i.e. magnetoelectricity. The origin and manifestations of magnetoelectricity can be very different in the available plethora of multiferroic systems, with multiple possible mechanisms hidden behind the phenomena. In this review, we describe the fundamental physics that causes magnetoelectricity from a theoretical viewpoint. The present review will focus on mainstream physical mechanisms in both single-phase multiferroics and magnetoelectric heterostructures. The most recent tendencies addressing possible new magnetoelectric mechanisms will also be briefly outlined.

Magnetism and multiferroicity of an isosceles triangular lattice antiferromagnet Sr3NiNb2O9

Various experimental measurements were performed to complete the phase diagram of a weakly distorted triangular lattice system, Sr3NiNb2O9 with Ni(2+) , spin-1 magnetic ions. This compound possesses an isosceles triangular lattice with two shorter bonds and one longer bond. It shows a two-step magnetic phase transition at [Formula: see text] K and [Formula: see text] K at zero magnetic field, characteristic of an easy-axis anisotropy. In the magnetization curves, a series of magnetic phase transitions was observed such as an up-up-down phase at [Formula: see text] T with 1/3 of the saturation magnetization (M sat) and an oblique phase at [Formula: see text] T with [Formula: see text]/3 M sat. Intriguingly, the magnetic phase transition below T N2 is in tandem with the ferroelectricity, which demonstrates multiferroic behaviors. Moreover, the multiferroic phase persists in all magnetically ordered phases regardless of the spin structure. The comparison between the phase diagrams of Sr3NiNb2O9 and its sister compound with an equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba3NiNb2O9 (Hwang et al 2012 Phys. Rev. Lett. 109 257205), illustrates how a small imbalance among exchange interactions change the magnetic ground states of the TLAFs.

Long-range antiferromagnetic order and possible field induced spin-flop transition in BiMnVO5

We report the bulk magnetic characterization of a dimeric chain material, BiMnVO₅, by means of magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Our results provide compelling evidence of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at (T _N) ~ 11.5 K. Moreover, the magnetic entropy change in zero field saturates to 14.6 J mol^-1 K^-1 which is close to the total spin entropy of Mn²⁺. The development of long-range magnetic order in this chain material demonstrates the interplay of strong intra-chain and inter-chain interactions between the dimers, in addition to the intra-dimer interaction. Low-temperature (T  <  T _N) heat capacity data indicate the presence of a gap (Δ/k _B  ≈  5 K) in the spin excitations. Furthermore, the isothermal magnetization below T _N shows an anomaly in the slope between 30 and 40 kOe which is suggestive of a spin-flop transition. Such a low-field spin-flop transition and gapped spin wave excitations may be attributed to the presence of (weak) magnetic anisotropy in this material. We attempt to construct a phase diagram in the magnetic field-temperature plane by extracting data from in-field heat capacity and isothermal magnetization measurements.

Magnetic manipulation of electric orders in Co4NbTaO9

Magnetic, dielectric and magnetoelectric properties of the polycrystalline Co₄NbTaO₉ have been investigated in this paper.
