Properties of Cerium Hydroxides from Matrix Infrared Spectra and Electronic Structure Calculations

Cerium(IV) chitosan-based hydrogel composite for efficient adsorptive removal of phosphates(V) from aqueous solutions

The excess presence of phosphate(V) ions in the biosphere is one of the most serious problems that negatively affect aqueous biocenosis. Thus, phosphates(V) separation is considered to be important for sustainable development. In the presented study, an original cerium(IV)-modified chitosan-based hydrogel (Ce-CTS) was developed using the chemical co-precipitation method and then used as an adsorbent for efficient removal of phosphate(V) ions from their aqueous solutions. From the scientific point of view, it represents a completely new physicochemical system. It was found that the adsorptive removal of phosphate(V) anions by the Ce-CTS adsorbent exceeded 98% efficiency which is ca. 4-times higher compared with the chitosan-based hydrogel without any modification (non-cross-linked CTS). The best result of the adsorption capacity of phosphates(V) on the Ce-CTS adsorbent, equal to 71.6 mg/g, was a result of adsorption from a solution with an initial phosphate(V) concentration 9.76 mg/dm3 and pH 7, an adsorbent dose of 1 g/dm3, temperature 20 °C. The equilibrium interphase distribution data for the Ce-CTS adsorbent and aqueous solution of phosphates(V) agreed with the theoretical Redlich-Peterson and Hill adsorption isotherm models. From the kinetic point of view, the pseudo-second-order model explained the phosphates(V) adsorption rate for Ce-CTS adsorbent the best. The specific effect of porous structure of adsorbent influencing the diffusional mass transfer resistances was identified using Weber-Morris kinetic model. The thermodynamic study showed that the process was exothermic and the adsorption ran spontaneously. Modification of CTS with cerium(IV) resulted in the significant enhancement of the chitosan properties towards both physical adsorption (an increase of the point of zero charge of adsorbent), and chemical adsorption (through the presence of Ce(IV) that demonstrates a chemical affinity for phosphate(V) anions). The elaborated and experimentally verified highly effective adsorbent can be successfully applied to uptake phosphates(V) from aqueous systems. The Ce-CTS adsorbent is stable in the conditions of the adsorption process, no changes in the adsorbent structure or leaching of the inorganic filling were observed.

Spin-orbit coupling and vibronic transitions of Ce(C3H4) and Ce(C3H6) formed by the Ce reaction with propene: Mass-analyzed threshold ionization and relativistic quantum computation

A Ce atom reaction with propene is carried out in a pulsed laser vaporization molecule beam source. Several Ce-hydrocarbon species formed by the C-H and C-C bond activation of propene are observed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and Ce(C₃H_n) (n = 4 and 6) are characterized by mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy and density functional theory, multiconfiguration, and relativistic quantum chemical calculations. The MATI spectrum of each species consists of two vibronic band systems, each with several vibronic bands. Ce(C₃H₆) is identified as an inserted species with Ce inserting into an allylic C-H bond of propene and Ce(C₃H₄) as a metallocycle through 1,2-vinylic dehydrogenation. Both species have a C_s structure with the Ce 4f¹6s¹ ground valence electron configuration in the neutral molecule and the Ce 4f¹ configuration in the singly charged ion. The two vibronic band systems observed for each species are attributed to the ionization of two pairs of the lowest spin-orbit coupled states with each pair being nearly degenerate.

Reaction mechanism between small-sized Ce clusters and water molecules II: an ab initio investigation on Cen (n = 1-3) + mH2O (m = 2-6)

Possible reactions between the products of the three independent reactions involving a small Ce cluster and a single water molecule, Cen + H2O (n = 1-3), and an additional H2O molecule are systematically investigated. The ground-state isomers of the final products and the reaction pathways involving multiple water molecules are predicted. We find that under either ambient or UV-irradiation conditions, all the reactions can entail low energy barriers. In addition, the final products of the reaction between Cen and more than two H2O molecules are also predicted through an extensive structural search. The calculated reaction energies suggest that although small-sized Ce clusters can react with more than two water molecules, the reactions with one or two water molecules are dominant. The electronic structures of all the ground-state isomers and the corresponding oxidation states of Ce atoms in these isomers are computed and determined via the natural bond orbital (NBO) method. The results indicate that a single Ce atom and a Ce2 cluster can react with a maximum of four and six water molecules, respectively, while a Ce3 cluster can react with more than six water molecules. This comprehensive study offers an improved understanding of the mechanism underlying the reactions between a single Ce atom or a small Ce cluster and two or more H2O molecules. Knowledge obtained from this study can be helpful for the development of high-performance Ce-doped or Ce-based catalysts.

Reaction mechanism between small-sized Ce clusters and water molecules: an ab initio investigation on Cen + H2O

Reactions of small-sized cerium clusters Cen (n = 1-3) with a single water molecule are systematically investigated theoretically. The ground state structures of the Cen/H2O complex and the reaction pathways between Cen + H2O are predicted. Our results show the size-dependent reactivity of small-sized Ce clusters. The calculated reaction energies and reaction barriers indicate that the reactivity between Cen and water becomes higher with increasing cluster size. The predicted reaction pathways show that the single Ce atom and the Ce2 and Ce3 clusters can all easily react with H2O and dissociate the water molecule. Under UV-irradiation, the reaction of a Ce atom with a single H2O molecule may even release an H2 molecule. The reaction of either Ce2 or Ce3 with a single H2O molecule can fully dissociate the H2O into H and O atoms while it is bonded with the Ce cluster. The electronic configuration and oxidation states of the Ce atoms in the products and the higher occupied molecular orbitals are analyzed by using the natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis method, from which the high reactivity between the reaction products of Cen + H2O and an additional H2O molecule is predicted. Our results offer deeper molecular insights into the chemical reactivity of Ce, which could be helpful for developing more efficient Ce-doped or Ce-based catalysts.

Investigating the Hybrid-Structure-Effect of CeO2 -Encapsulated Au Nanostructures on the Transfer Coupling of Nitrobenzene

Due to the obvious distinctions in structure, core-shell nanostructures (CSNs) and yolk-shell nanostructures (YSNs) exhibit different catalytic behavior for specific organic reactions. In this work, two unique autoredox routes are developed to the fabrication of CeO₂ -encapsulated Au nanocatalysts. Route A is the synthesis of well-defined CSNs by a one-step redox reaction. The process involves an interesting phenomenon in which Ce³⁺ can act as a weak acid to inhibit the hydrolysis of Ce⁴⁺ under the condition of OH^- shortage. Route B is the fabrication of monodispersed YSNs by a two-step redox reaction with amorphous Co₃ O₄ as an in situ template. Furthermore, the transfer coupling of nitrobenzene is chosen as a probe reaction to investigate their catalytic difference. The CSNs can gradually achieve the conversion of nitrobenzene into azoxybenzene, while the YSNs can rapidly convert nitrobenzene into azobenzene. The different catalytic results are mainly attributed to their structural distinctions.

Pd(0)-CMC@Ce(OH)(4) organic/inorganic hybrid as highly active catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction

A very easy sequential metathesis for the synthesis of Pd(II)-CMC@Ce(OH)₄ organic/inorganic hybrid and its application as effective pre-catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction have been reported. It was found that the Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were formed in situ in the course of the Suzuki-Miyaura couplings when Pd(II)-CMC@Ce(OH)₄ was used as a pre-catalyst. The activity of the Pd NPs in the reaction was enhanced synergistically by the unique redox properties (Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺) of Ce(OH)₄ and coordination with carboxyl groups as well as free hydroxyl groups of the hybrid of CMC@Ce(OH)₄. The results exhibit the Pd(0)-CMC@Ce(OH)₄ is super over Pd(II)@CMC, Pd(II)@CeO₂, and Pd(II)@Ce(OH)₄ catalysts in the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. Moreover, the catalyst could be easily separated by simple filtration and reused at least seven runs without losing its activity.

Insights into the enhanced CeN triple bond in the HCeN molecule

Herein, an experimental study of the vibrational spectra of HCeN was carried out in solid argon, followed by theoretical investigations of molecular structures and the nature of CeN bond.
