A Copper–Nitroxide Adduct Exhibiting Separate Single Crystal-to-Single Crystal Polymerization–Depolymerization and Spin Crossover Transitions

A metal-radical hetero-tri-spin SCM with methyl-pyrazole-nitronyl nitroxide bridges

The preparation, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of a family of hetero-tri-spin 1-D coordination polymers with the formula [Ln(hfac)₃Cu(hfac)₂(4-NIT-MePyz)₂] (Ln = Gd, 1, Tb, 2, Dy, 3; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; 4-NIT-MePyz = 2-{4-(1-methyl)-pyrazolyl}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) are reported. In these complexes, the 4-NIT-MePyz radical acts as a linker to bridge the Cu^II and Ln^III ions through its pyrazole and aminoxyl groups to form a chain structure. Magnetic properties typical of spin-chains are observed for Dy and Tb derivatives but single-chain magnet (SCM) behavior was evidenced only for the Tb compound which is characterized by an energy gap for demagnetization Δ_τ/k_B of 31 K.

Synthesis, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of nitroxide radical-coordinated manganese(II) and cobalt(II) complexes

Coordination complexes constructed from the nitronyl nitroxide radical NIT-Pyra-3-Isobu and MII(hfac)2(H2O)2 as building blocks (NIT-Pyra-3-Isobu = 2-(3-isobutyl-pyrazole)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonato, and M = Mn or Co) are successfully synthesized. The crystal structures of the coordination compounds reveal the usefulness of the functionalized radical in providing discrete or extended architectures. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the ligand is coordinated through the oxygen atom of NO• and the N atom of the pyrazole linkage to the metal, and the metals adopt an octahedral geometry leading to one-dimensional zig-zag chain systems. The magnetic behavior of the manganese and cobalt shows overall antiferromagnetic interactions between the metal center and the organic radical.

Molecular S = 2 High-Spin, S = 0 Low-Spin and S = 0 ⇄ 2 Spin-Transition/-Crossover Nickel(II)-Bis(nitroxide) Coordination Compounds

Heterospin systems have a great advantage in frontier orbital engineering since they utilize a wide diversity of paramagnetic chromophores and almost infinite combinations and mutual geometries. Strong exchange couplings are expected in 3d–2p heterospin compounds, where the nitroxide (aminoxyl) oxygen atom has a direct coordination bond with a nickel(II) ion. Complex formation of nickel(II) salts and tert-butyl 2-pyridyl nitroxides afforded a discrete 2p–3d–2p triad. Ferromagnetic coupling is favored when the magnetic orbitals, nickel(II) dσ and radical π*, are arranged in a strictly orthogonal fashion, namely, a planar coordination structure is characterized. In contrast, a severe twist around the coordination bond gives an orbital overlap, resulting in antiferromagnetic coupling. Non-chelatable nitroxide ligands are available for highly twisted and practically diamagnetic complexes. Here, the Ni–O–N–Csp2 torsion (dihedral) angle is supposed to be a useful metric to describe the nickel ion dislocated out of the radical π* nodal plane. Spin-transition complexes exhibited a planar coordination structure in a high-temperature phase and a nonplanar structure in a low-temperature phase. The gradual spin transition is described as a spin equilibrium obeying the van’t Hoff law. Density functional theory calculation indicates that the energy level crossing of the high- and low-spin states. The optimized structures of diamagnetic and high-spin states well agreed with the experimental large and small torsions, respectively. The novel mechanism of the present spin transition lies in the ferro-/antiferromagnetic coupling switch. The entropy-driven mechanism is plausible after combining the results of the related copper(II)-nitroxide compounds. Attention must be paid to the coupling parameter J as a variable of temperature in the magnetic analysis of such spin-transition materials. For future work, the exchange coupling may be tuned by chemical modification and external stimulus, because it has been clarified that the parameter is sensitive to the coordination structure and actually varies from 2J/kB = +400 K to −1400 K.

Synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of a nitronyl nitroxide biradical-coordinated copper(II) complex

A coordination compound constructed from a nitronyl nitroxide biradical NITPh(3-NIT) and CuII(hfac)2(H2O)2 building blocks [NITPh(3-NIT) = 1,3-bis(1′-oxyl-3′-oxido-4′,4′, 5′, 5′-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1 H-imidazol-2-y1)-benzene, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonato] is successfully synthesized. The crystal structure is determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The asymmetric complex {[(NITPh(3-NIT)]Cu(hfac)2} consists of one Cu(II) ion and two >N–O• groups and adopts a distorted triangular bipyramid with a penta-coordinated central copper(II) atom and three hfac oxygen atoms at the base and a >N–O• oxygen atom and one hfac oxygen atom at the apices. Intramolecular O. . .O bonding and π–π stacking interactions are observed between molecules. A magnetic susceptibility study of the coordination compound shows antiferromagnetic interactions between Cu(II) ions and >N–O• groups and very weak ferromagnetic interactions between Cu(II) ions and the free >N–O• group through O. . .O bonding between the nitroxide group oxygen atom and the oxygen atom of hfac.

A Hidden Coordination-Bond Torsional Deformation as a Sign of Possible Spin Transition in Nickel(II)-Bis(nitroxide) Compounds

Complex formation of nickel(II) tetrafluoroborate and tert-butyl 5-phenyl-2-pyridyl nitroxide (phpyNO) in the presence of sodium cyanate gave a discrete molecule [Ni(phpyNO)2(X)2] (X = NCO). The Ni-O-N-Csp2 torsion angles were reduced on heating; 33.5(5)° and 36.2(4)° at 100 K vs. 25.7(10)° and 32.3(11)° at 400 K. The magnetic behavior was almost diamagnetic below ca. 100 K, and the χmT value reached 1.04 cm3 K mol-1 at 400 K. An analysis using the van't Hoff equation indicates a possible spin transition at T1/2 >> 400 K. Density functional theory calculation shows that the singlet-quintet energy gap decreases as the structural change from 100 to 400 K. The geometry optimization results suggest that the diamagnetic state has the Ni-O-N-Csp2 torsion angles of 32.7° while the Stotal = 2 state has those of 11.9°. The latter could not be experimentally observed even at 400 K. After overviewing the results on the known X = Br, Cl, and NCS derivatives, the magnetic behavior is described in a common phase diagram. The Br and Cl compounds undergo the energy level crossing of the high-/low-spin states, but the NCS and NCO compounds do not in a conventional experimental temperature range. The spin transition mechanism in this series involves the exchange coupling switch between ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions, corresponding to the high- and low-spin phases, respectively.

An indication of spin-transition accompanied by an order-disorder structural transformation in [Ni(phpyNO)2(NCS)2] (phpyNO = tert-butyl 5-phenyl-2-pyridyl nitroxide)

Reaction of nickel(ii) thiocyanate and tert-butyl 5-phenyl-2-pyridyl nitroxide (phpyNO) afforded a 2p–3d–2p heterospin triad [Ni(phpyNO)₂(NCS)₂]. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pbcn space group. The whole molecule is crystallographically independent. The torsion angles around Ni–O–N–C_2py are 26.8(4) and 27.3(4)° at 400 K, indicating appreciable orbital overlaps of the radical π* and nickel(ii) 3d_x²−y²/3d_z² orbitals. In a low-temperature region, the torsion was enhanced, and the space group changed to monoclinic P2₁/c with a doubled asymmetric unit volume. The χ_mT value was practically null below ca. 140 K and, on heating to 400 K, gradually increased and reached 1.30 cm³ K mol⁻¹. A van't Hoff analysis suggests a spin transition at T_1/2 = 530(20) K. Density functional theory calculation reproduced ground S_total = 0 with singlet-triplet gaps of 910 and 1263 K for the 140 K structure, and the gap was reduced to 297 K at 400 K. Consequently, the present compound can be considered as an incomplete spin-crossover material, as a result of T_1/2 located above the experimental temperature window.

The exchange coupling in [Ni(phpyNO)₂(NCS)₂] is strongly antiferromagnetic in a low-temperature structure whilst moderately antiferromagnetic in a high-temperature structure.

Ligand Structure Effects on Molecular Assembly and Magnetic Properties of Copper(II) Complexes with 3-Pyridyl-Substituted Nitronyl Nitroxide Derivatives

Reaction of Cu(hfac)₂ with methyl- and bromo-3-pyridyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxides (L ^R ) leads to assemble a diverse set of coordination complexes: mononuclear [Cu(hfac)₂L ^2-Me ], binuclear [{Cu(hfac)₂}₂(H₂O)L ^2-Me ], trinuclear [{Cu(hfac)₂}₃(L ^6-Br )₂], pentanuclear [{Cu(hfac)₂}₅(L ^2-Me )₂], and [{Cu(hfac)₂}₅(L ^2-Me )₄], cocrystals [Cu(hfac)₂(L ^2-Br )₂]·[Cu(hfac)₂(H₂O)₂] and [Cu(hfac)₂(L ^2-Br )₂]·2[Cu(hfac)₂H₂O], one-dimensional polymers [Cu(hfac)₂L ^2-Br ] _n and [Cu(hfac)₂L ^6-Br ] _n , and cyclic dimers [Cu(hfac)₂L ^5-Me ]₂, [Cu(hfac)₂L ^5-Br ]₂, and [Cu(hfac)₂L ^6-Me ]₂. The molecular structures of the obtained complexes are strongly affected by the substituent type and its location in the pyridine heterocycle. Occupation of the second position of the pyridine ring increases the steric hindrance of both imine and nitroxide coordination sites of L ^2-R , which is favorable for the formation of various conformers and precipitation of complexes with different molecular structures. The pentanuclear [{Cu(hfac)₂}₅(L ^2-Me )₂] and [{Cu(hfac)₂}₅(L ^2-Me )₄] complexes do not have prior analogues and are valuable model objects for investigation of the mechanism of formation of various coordination polymers. The arrangement of long Cu-O_NO bonds in {CuO₆} square bipyramids due to the weakening nitroxide donor site in complexes, based on L ^2-Me , L ^2-Br , and L ^6-Br ligands, results in ferromagnetic exchange interactions between spins of Cu²⁺ ions and nitroxides. Complexes with substituents that do not considerably affect the coordination ability of ligands (L ^5-Me , L ^5-Br , and L ^6-Me ) exhibit strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between spins of Cu²⁺ ions and nitroxides.

High-Spin and Incomplete Spin-Crossover Polymorphs in Doubly Chelated [Ni(L)2Br2] (L = tert-Butyl 5-Phenyl-2-pyridyl Nitroxide)

Complexation of nickel(II) bromide with tert-butyl 5-phenyl-2-pyridyl nitroxide (phpyNO) gave two morphs of doubly chelated [Ni(phpyNO)₂Br₂] as a 2p-3d-2p heterospin triad. The α phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn. An asymmetric unit involves a half-molecule. The torsion angle around Ni-O-N-C_2py is as small as 6.5(3)° at 100 K and 7.0(6)° at 400 K, guaranteeing an orthogonal arrangement between the magnetic radical π* and metal 3d_x²-y² and 3d_z² orbitals. Magnetic study revealed the high-spin ground state with the exchange coupling constant 2J/k_B = +288(5) K, on the basis of a symmetrical spin Hamiltonian. The β phase crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/n. The whole molecule is an independent unit. The Ni-O-N-C_2py torsion angles are 24.2(6) and 37.2(5)° at 100 K and 10.4(7) and 25.9(6)° at 400 K. A magnetic study revealed a very gradual and nonhysteretic spin transition. An analysis based on the van't Hoff equation gave a successful fit with the spin-crossover temperature of 134(1) K, although the susceptibility did not reach the theoretical high-spin value at 400 K. Density functional theory calculation on the β phase showed ground S_total = 0 in the low-temperature structure while S_total = 2 in the high-temperature structure, supporting the synchronized exchange coupling switch on both sides. Consequently, the β phase can be recognized as an "incomplete spin crossover" material, as a result of conflicting thermal depopulation effects in a high-temperature region.

Pressure-Controlled Migration of Paramagnetic Centers in a Heterospin Crystal

A study of the single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation induced by temperature variation for the chain polymer Cu(II) complex with nitronyl nitroxide showed that an increase in the hydrostatic pressure of up to ∼0.07 GPa completely changes the intracrystalline displacements of molecules relative to one another. This, in turn, significantly affects the interaction energy of the unpaired electrons of the paramagnetic centers and hence the form of the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility χT. The cooling of crystals under normal conditions causes a rearrangement of the intrachain exchange clusters {>N-•O-Cu(II)-O•-N<} accompanied by a shortening of the distances between the paramagnetic centers. This changes the character of exchange interactions and generates multistage spin transitions. An increase in the hydrostatic pressure leads to a drastic change in the O···O distances between the nitroxyl fragments of adjacent chains, an increase in the antiferromagnetic exchange between them, and complete suppression of spin transitions.

Slow magnetization dynamics in a six-coordinate Fe(ii)-radical complex

A new paramagnetic ligand, betaDTDA, and its coordination complex with Fe(hfac)2 are reported (betaDTDA = 4-(benzothiazol-2'-yl)-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl; hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato-). The neutral radical betaDTDA is the first dithiadiazolyl ligand designed to include an electropositive sulphur moiety outside the thiazyl heterocycle, increasing the capacity for supramolecular, structure-directing electrostatic contacts and enabling new pathways for magnetic exchange. The Fe(hfac)2(betaDTDA) complex is composed of a hs-Fe(ii) center with the three bidentate ligands arranged about the ion in a distorted octahedral 6-coordinate environment. The magnetic properties of crystalline Fe(hfac)2(betaDTDA) are consistent with strong antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling between the metal and ligand moments, giving rise to a well-defined Stotal = 3/2 ground state that is the only thermally populated state below 40 K. Below 4 K, this complex exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization detected by ac susceptibility measurements consistent with a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour.

Novel Cu(ii) complexes with NNO-Schiff base-like ligands – structures and magnetic properties
