Nonclassical Phosphomolybdates with Different Degrees of Reduction: Syntheses and Structural and Photo/Electrocatalytic Properties

Porous {P6Mo18O73}-type Poly(oxometalate) Metal-Organic Frameworks for Improved Pseudocapacitance and Electrochemical Sensing Performance

{P₆Mo₁₈} poly(oxometalate) (POM) clusters have huge steric hindrance and limited active oxygen atoms, which make them difficult to combine with metal-organic units to form three-dimensional (3D) porous structures. Therefore, functionalization of such POMs has always been a bottleneck that is difficult to break through. In this study, {P₆Mo₁₈} POM was successfully grafted on a lock-like metal-organic chain to generate a multiporous coordination polymer, [{Na(H₂O)(H₂btb)}{Cu₄^I(H₂O)(pz)₅Cl}{H₂Sr⊂P₆Mo₂^VMo₁₆^VIO₇₃}]·3H₂O (1) (pz = pyrazine; btb = 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazole) butane). Meanwhile, a zero-dimensional (0-D) control compound with only btb ligands as counterions, (H₄btb)[H₄Sr⊂P₆Mo₂^VMo₁₆^VIO₇₃]·3H₂O (2), was also obtained via a hydrothermal reaction. Compound 1 represents the first basket-type 3D poly(oxometalate) metal-organic framework (POMOF) assembly, which possesses interpenetrating pores and complex topology. 1-GO-CPE displays improved supercapacitor (SC) performance (the specific capacitance of 929.4 F g^-1 at a current density of 3 A g^-1 with 94.1% of cycle efficiency after 5000 cycles) compared with 2-GO-CPE and most reported POMOF electrode materials, which may be due to the outstanding redox capability of basket-POM, introduction of metal-organic chains, intersecting pores, and excellent conductivity of graphene. An asymmetric SC device with 1-GO-CPE as the negative electrode exhibits an energy density of 29.7 Wh kg^-1 with a power density of 3148.2 W kg^-1 and long-lasting cycling life. In addition, 1-GO-GCE as an electrochemical sensor responds to dopamine (DA) at a voltage of 0.40 V and shows lower detection limits (0.19 μM (signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) = 3)), higher selectivity, and good reproducibility in the linear range of 0.56 μM to 0.24 mM. The ability to accurately detect the content of DA in biological samples further proves the feasibility of the sensor in practical applications.

Wells-Dawson Arsenotungstate Porous Derivatives for Electrochemical Supercapacitor Electrodes and Electrocatalytically Active Materials

Two Wells-Dawson arsenotungstate coordination polymers, [{Cu^II(bim)₂}₃(As₂W₁₈O₆₂)] (1) and [(Cu^I₁₀pz₁₀Cl₄)(As₂W₁₈O₆₂)] (bim = 2,2'-biimidazole; pz = pyrazine), have been assembled via a hydrothermal method and fully characterized. Compound 1 exhibits a 2,6-connected two-dimensional hybrid layer based on asymmetrically modified {As₂W₁₈} anions and {Cu(bim)₂} linkers, which is extended to a three-dimensional network with a special interlayer structure and a one-dimensional tunnel. Compound 2 is a host-guest framework that consists of a Cu-pz-Cl network with 20-member square rings, 16-member irregular rings, and embedded eight-node {As₂W₁₈} guest molecules. Compounds 1 and 2 show uncommon specific capacitance (834.8 and 960.1 F g^-1, respectively, at a current density of 2.4 A g^-1), enduring cycling stability (capacitance retention rates of 89.3% and 91.9%, respectively, after 5000 cycles), and good electrical conductivity, which are superior to those of the unmodified zero-dimensional Dawson arsenotungstate compound and most reported electrode materials in terms of their stable structure, special layer spacing, and orderly channels. Moreover, the title compounds exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for oxidizing ascorbic acid and reducing nitrite.

Theoretical exploration on switchable NLO response induced by redox properties of polyoxometalates [XNbW11O40]n-/(n+1)- (X = Al, Si, P, S, Ga, Ge, As, Se)

Calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been performed to investigate the relationship between redox properties and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of Keggin-type anions [XNbW₁₁O₄₀]^n- (X = Al, Si, P, S, Ga, Ge, As, Se) and their corresponding heteropoly blues. The frontier molecular orbitals, NLO responses and electronic transition properties of fully oxidized anions and heteropoly blues were discussed. It is noticeable that the second-order NLO behaviors can be switched by reduced electrons for these Keggin-type anions. The calculated β₀ value of heteropoly blues [XNbW₁₁O₄₀]^(n+1)- (X = P, As, S) are 21-23 times as large as those of fully oxidized anions [XNbW₁₁O₄₀]^n- (X = P, As, S) according to CAM-B3LYP/6-31G* (LANL2DZ basis sets for metal atom) calculations in CH₃CN. The aim of this work is to combine the attractive redox properties and NLO response of polyoxometalates to obtain the switchable NLO materials.

Long rigid ligand induced basket-type phosphomolybdate photo-/electro-catalytic materials

Two long rigid ligands are introduced into {P₆Mo₁₈O₇₃} systems, leading to two unique supramolecular hybrid assemblies, which show highly efficient catalytic activity for the degradation of refractory dye AP under UV light and bifunctional electrocatalytic behavior for the oxidation of dopamine (DA) and reduction of H₂O₂.

Effective photocatalytic and bifunctional electrocatalytic materials based on Keggin arsenomolybdates and different transition metal capped assemblies

V, Co, and Cu were introduced into {AsMo₁₂} system to build three Keggin derivatives with different caps, which show excellent photocatalytic activity and bifunctional electrocatalytic behavior.

Crystal Engineering in Supramolecular Polyoxometalate Hybrids through pH Controlled in Situ Ligand Hydrolysis

A family of five different three-dimensional polyoxometalate (POM) based supramolecular hybrids were synthesized by a hydrothermal route under different pH using a hydrolyzable naphthalene diimide ligand. The mechanism of crystallographic phase variation of the POM-amino pyridine hybrids under different pH was studied through controlled experiments where the final hydrolyzed products were analyzed through NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Different pH conditions led to variation in the extent of protonation and hydrolyzation of the ligand, yielding different phases. All of these were identified, and the structures of the supramolecular hybrids were characterized extensively. Mechanistic study proved that only the reaction conditions are responsible for the hydrolysis of the ligand and the in situ generated POM species do not have any role in it. Magnetic measurements confirmed the hexavalent oxidation states of the transition metal center (Mo) in the POM. Optical band gap measurements revealed that these hybrids are semiconducting in nature. Two of the compounds were studied for hydrogen peroxide mediated selective oxidation catalysis of small organic molecules and found to exhibit very good activity with high percentage of selectivity for the desired products of industrial importance.
