Synthesis, Radical Reactivity, and Thermochemistry of Monomeric Cu(II) Alkoxide Complexes Relevant to Cu/Radical Alcohol Oxidation Catalysis

Tale of Three Molecular Nitrides: Mononuclear Vanadium (V) and (IV) Nitrides As Well As a Mixed-Valence Trivanadium Nitride Having a V3N4 Double-Diamond Core

Transmetallation of [VCl₃(THF)₃] and [TlTp^tBu,Me] afforded [(Tp^tBu,Me)VCl₂] (1, Tp^tBu,Me = hydro-tris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate), which was reduced with KC₈ to form a C_3v symmetric V^II complex, [(Tp^tBu,Me)VCl] (2). Complex 1 has a high-spin (S = 1) ground state and displays rhombic high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectra, while complex 2 has an S = 3/2 ⁴A₂ ground state observable by conventional EPR spectroscopy. Complex 1 reacts with NaN₃ to form the V^V nitride-azide complex [(Tp^tBu,Me)V≡N(N₃)] (3). A likely V^III azide intermediate en route to 3, [(Tp^tBu,Me)VCl(N₃)] (4), was isolated by reacting 1 with N₃SiMe₃. Complex 4 is thermally stable but reacts with NaN₃ to form 3, implying a bis-azide intermediate, [(Tp^tBu,Me)V(N₃)₂] (A), leading to 3. Reduction of 3 with KC₈ furnishes a trinuclear and mixed-valent nitride, [{(Tp^tBu,Me)V}₂(μ₄-VN₄)] (5), conforming to a Robin-Day class I description. Complex 5 features a central vanadium ion supported only by bridging nitride ligands. Contrary to 1, complex 2 reacts with NaN₃ to produce an azide-bridged dimer, [{(Tp^tBu,Me)V}₂(1,3-μ₂-N₃)₂] (6), with two antiferromagnetically coupled high-spin V^II ions. Complex 5 could be independently produced along with [(κ₂-Tp^tBu,Me)₂V] upon photolysis of 6 in arene solvents. The putative {V^IV≡N} intermediate, [(Tp^tBu,Me)V≡N] (B), was intercepted by photolyzing 6 in a coordinating solvent, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), yielding [(Tp^tBu,Me)V≡N(THF)] (B-THF). In arene solvents, B-THF expels THF to afford 5 and [(κ₂-Tp^tBu,Me)₂V]. A more stable adduct (B-OPPh₃) was prepared by reacting B-THF with OPPh₃. These adducts of B are the first neutral and mononuclear V^IV nitride complexes to be isolated.

Involvement of a Formally Copper(III) Nitrite Complex in Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer and Nitration of Phenols

A unique high-valent copper nitrite species, LCuNO2, was accessed via the reversible one-electron oxidation of [M][LCuNO2] (M = NBu4+ or PPN+). The complex LCuNO2 reacts with 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenol via a typical proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) to yield LCuTHF and the 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenoxyl radical. The reaction between LCuNO2 and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol was more complicated. It yielded two products: the coupled bisphenol product expected from a H-atom abstraction and 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-nitrophenol, the product of an unusual anaerobic nitration. Various mechanisms for the latter transformation were considered.

Structural Characterization of the [CuOR]2+ Core

Formal Cu(III) complexes bearing an oxygen-based auxiliary ligand ([CuOR]²⁺, R = H or CH₂CF₃) were stabilized by modulating the donor character of supporting ligand L^Y (L^Y = 4-Y, N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide, Y = H or OMe) and/or the basicity of the auxiliary ligand, enabling the first characterization of these typically highly reactive cores by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Enhanced lifetimes in solution and slowed rates of PCET with a phenol substrate were observed. NMR spectra corroborate the S = 0 ground states of the complexes, and X-ray structures reveal shortened Cu-ligand bond distances that match well with theory.

Diversion of Catalytic C-N Bond Formation to Catalytic Oxidation of NH3 through Modification of the Hydrogen Atom Abstractor

We report that (TMP)Ru(NH₃)₂ (TMP = tetramesitylporphryin) is a molecular catalyst for oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen. An aryloxy radical, tri-tert-butylphenoxyl (ArO·), abstracts H atoms from a bound ammonia ligand of (TMP)Ru(NH₃)₂, leading to the discovery of a new catalytic C-N coupling to the para position of ArO· to form 4-amino-2,4,6-tri-tert-butylcyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one. Modification of the aryloxy radical to 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-tritylphenoxyl radical, which contains a trityl group at the para position, prevents C-N coupling and diverts the reaction to catalytic oxidation of NH₃ to give N₂. We achieved 125 ± 5 turnovers at 22 °C for oxidation of NH₃, the highest turnover number (TON) reported to date for a molecular catalyst.

The oxidative dehydrogenation of a coumarinyl scaffold with copper ion and metal ion detection in human liver cancer cells (HepG2)

An unsymmetrical o-phenylenediamine derivative, L (7-hydroxy-4-methyl-8-(1-(phenyl- (pyridin-2-yl)methyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-2H-chromen-2-one), has been synthesized from (E)-N¹-(phenyl(pyridine-2-yl)methylene)benzene-1,2-diamine with 7-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromene-8-carbaldehyde and characterized by X-ray, IR, ¹H NMR and ESI-MS spectral analyses. The X-ray structure shows L as a cyclic benzimidazole derivative, but it undergoes ring-opening upon reaction with transition metal ions. L is non-emissive in 9 : 1 (v/v) EtOH/H₂O (HEPES buffer, pH 7.4) but becomes highly fluorescent upon Zn²⁺ coordination, and the emissive Zn(ii) complex undergoes transmetallation in the presence of Cu²⁺ ions specifically, followed by amine to imine oxidation, i.e. an oxidative dehydrogenation (OD) reaction -(2e + 2H⁺) occurs. The transmetallation of Zn²⁺ from the complex by Cu²⁺ (CuCl₂) separated the non-emissive X-ray diffractable crystal of [Cu(L'')Cl] (L'' = amine oxidized form of L). A square pyramidal [Cu(L'')][ClO₄] complex was also isolated from the reaction of L with Cu(CH₃CN)₄(ClO₄) in the presence of air, and in this complex the amine is also oxidized to the imine. Here, copper ions in the presence of air play an important role in the OD reaction of L as determined by EPR and cyclic voltammetry studies. The ligand, L, is used for Zn²⁺ ion recovery from a municipally supplied water sample. A paper strip detection kit for Zn²⁺ and Cu²⁺ is designed using L. The ligand is also used for intracellular Zn²⁺ detection in a human liver cancer cell line (HepG2).

Oxazoline-/Copper-Catalyzed Alkoxyl Radical Generation: Solvent-Switched to Access 3a,3a'-Bisfuroindoline and 3-Alkoxyl Furoindoline

We report the first example of oxazoline-/copper-catalyzed alcohol oxidation to generate the alkoxyl radical under additive-free conditions. The resulting alkoxyl radical addition to alkene enables useful C-O bond-forming and selective C(sp³)-C(sp³) radical-radical dimerization/radical-trapping reactions, providing direct access to the 3a,3a'-bisfuro[2,3-b]indoline scaffold for the first time and a wide range of 3-alkoxyl furoindolines with high efficiency.

Redox active ligand and metal cooperation for C(sp2)-H oxidation: extension of the galactose oxidase mechanism in water-mediated amide formation

Redox interplay between a ligand and a metal can provide a profound driving force for the promotion of unprecedented reactions. This work presents an intriguing water-assisted oxidative transformation of imine to amide with no formal change in the metal oxidation state in the copper and nickel complexes of an aminophenol ligand versus a zinc analogue.

Probing Hydrogen Atom Transfer at a Phosphorus(V) Oxide Bond Using a "Bulky Hydrogen Atom" Surrogate: Analogies to PCET

Recent computational studies suggest that the phosphate support in the commercial vanadium phosphate oxide (VPO) catalyst may play a critical role in initiating butane C-H bond activation through a mechanism termed reduction-coupled oxo activation (ROA) similar to proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET); however, no experimental evidence exists to support this mechanism. Herein, we present molecular model compounds, (Ph₂N)₃V═N-P(O)Ar₂ (Ar = C₆F₅ (2a), Ph (2b)), which are reactive to both weak H atom donors and a Me₃Si^• (a "bulky hydrogen atom" surrogate) donor, 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)pyrazine. While the former reaction led to product decomposition, the latter resulted in the isolation of the reduced, silylated complexes (Ph₂N)₃V-N═P(OSiMe₃)Ar₂ (3a/b). Detailed analyses of possible reaction pathways, involving the isolation and full characterization of potential stepwise square-scheme intermediates, as well as the determination of minimum experimentally and computationally derived thermochemical values, are described. We find that stepwise electron transfer (ET) + silylium transfer (ST) or concerted EST mechanisms are most likely. This study provides the first experimental evidence supporting a ROA mechanism and may inform future studies in homogeneous or heterogeneous C-H activation chemistry, as well as open up a possible new avenue for main group/transition metal cooperative redox reactivity.

Sterically directed nitronate complexes of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-nitrophenoxide with Cu(ii) and Zn(ii) and their H-atom transfer reactivity

The bulky 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-nitrophenolate ligand forms complexes with [Tp^tBuCu^II]⁺ and [Tp^tBuZn^II]⁺ binding via the nitro group in an unusual nitronato-quinone resonance form (Tp^tBu = hydro-tris(3-tert-butyl-pyrazol-1-yl)borate).

Hybrid compounds assembled from copper-triazole complexes and phosphomolybdic acid as advanced catalysts for the oxidation of olefins with oxygen

Hybrid compounds of [CuI4(3atrz)₄][PMoVI11Mo^VO₄₀] (1) and [CuI6(3atrz)₆][PMo₁₂O₄₀]₂ (2) are active catalysts for olefin oxidation.
