Abstract
Unlike secondary alkyl amines and electron-rich anilines, secondary electron-poor anilines are challenging amine sources to explore the chemical space of Lewis acid-catalyzed condensation-based transformations with furfural. In this work, we report the efficient synthesis of trans-4,5-diamino cyclopentenones (DCP) using a high-pressure promoted Nazarov-like electrocyclization of Stenhouse salts arising from the Sc(III)-catalyzed condensation of furfural with secondary electron-poor anilines. The reaction enables access to otherwise difficult-to-access DCP and compatibility with a large scope of alkyl and aryl secondary amines. A 2- to 18-fold increase in yields for electron-poor anilines was highlighted using this approach in the synthesis of a pharmacologically active compound.

Abstract
Lanthanide-containing materials are of inter-est in the field of crystal engin-eering because of their unique properties and distinct structure types. In this context, a new samarium-sodium heterometallic coordination polymer, poly[tetra-kis-(μ2-2-formyl-6-meth-oxy-phenolato)samarium(III)sodium(I)], {[SmNa(C8H7O3)4]·solvent}n (Sm-1), was synthesized and crystallized via slow evaporation from a mixture of ethanol and aceto-nitrile. The compound features alternating SmIII and NaI ions, which are linked by ortho-vanillin (o-vanillin) ligands to form a mono-periodic chain-like coordination polymer. The chains propagate along the [001] direction. Residual electron density of disordered solvent mol-ecules in the void space could not be reasonably modeled, thus the SQUEEZE function was applied. The structural, vibrational, and optical properties are reported.

Abstract
The use of flexible molecular systems in solution, without strictly controlling their behaviour, has frequently been productive. Their potential could increase by a more holistic view of the reaction(s) process(es) in which they are involved. In this perspective, we introduce a broader approach - "Chemical Chartographisis" - and discuss three projects in detail to illustrate its potential. The topics involve bimetallic 3d/4f species and coordination compounds built from benzotriazole-based and (a)symmetric salan ligands and focus on catalytic and, in less detail, biological-related examples.

Abstract
We report a peculiar Stenhouse salt. It does not evolve into cyclopentenones upon basification, due to the steric hindrance of its bulky stable carbene patterns. This allowed for the observation and characterization of the transient open-chain neutral derivative, which was isolated as its cyclized form. The latter features an unusually long reactive C-O bond (150 pm) and a rich electrochemistry, including oxidation into an air-persistent radical cation.

Abstract
A stable 3d-4f heterometallic cluster, namely, {Dy4Ni5L10(NO3)4(CO3)4(CH3OH)2}·CH3CN (Dy4Ni5, HL = 8-hydroxyquinoline), has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. The compound exhibits an interesting structure in which a tetrahedron based on 4f ions interpenetrates with a square pyramid based on 3d ions. Besides, a unique intermolecular interaction was found in Dy4Ni5, giving rise to its high stability not only when it is in the solid state but also when it dissolves in organic solvents. In addition, the magnetic behavior of solid Dy4Ni5 and the magneto-optical activity of the Dy4Ni5 solution were also studied.

Abstract
We investigated the catalytic efficacy of silicotungstic acid (H4SiW12O40) polyoxometalate (POM) toward the reaction between furfural and amines that selectively yields trans-N,N-4,5-substituted-diaminocyclopenten-2-ones (trans-DACPs). H4SiW12O40 facilitates the synthesis of a library of trans-DACPs with loadings as low as 0.05 mol %, in open air, without additives, in short times and good to high isolated yields. The protocol was applied to secondary amines as well as to aromatic primary amines with pKb higher than ca. 9. The present catalytic synthetic protocol has an extended substrate scope with high yields and represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first polyoxometalate-driven paradigm as an efficient method to produce cyclopentanone frameworks under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
Several naturally occurring cyclopentenones, such as palmenones and nigrosporiones, exhibit antimicrobial activity. Herein we describe the antimicrobial activity of cyclopentenones and derivatives that can be easily accessed from biomass derivatives furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Upon screening a range of functionalized trans-diamino-cyclopentenones (DCPs) and δ-lactone-fused cyclopentenones (LCPs), an oxime ether derivative of DCP was identified that exhibited remarkable antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant E. faecalis (VRE) strains.

Abstract
One-pot reactions of an asymmetric carboxy-ether-phenol based Schiff base H2L (2-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)amino)benzoic acid) with selected Ln(NO3)3·nH2O and [Co2(μ-OH2)(O2CCMe3)4(HO2CCMe3)4] (Co2-Piv) in basic MeOH medium resulted in a family of three octanuclear complexes, [CoII4LnIII4L4(μ1,3-Piv)4(μ1,1,3-Piv)2(η1-Piv)2(μ3-OH)4(MeOH)2]·mMeOH·nH2O (Ln = Dy; m = 3, n = 1 (1), Ho; m = 4, n = 0 (2), Yb; m = 3, n = 1 (3)). The coordination aggregates thus obtained were nicely sustained by four ligand anions and eight externally added carboxylate anions showing three different modes of intermetallic connectivity. The options for incorporating different 4f ions in an investigative synthesis, without altering the resulting intermetallic core structure, were successful for the three representative examples. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the compounds are isostructural and built from two initially formed partial dicubane-type Co2Ln2L2 units. In each of the tetranuclear parts, the metal ion centers are held together by two L2-, two μ3-HO-, three Piv- bridges, one terminal Piv-, and one terminal MeOH. Four carboxylate ends of four L2- units are responsible for connecting two Co2Ln2 units into octanuclear structures. The unique distortion around the CoII centers is achieved from the facile coordination of bigger 4f ions to the adjacent hard OO sites. The distortion is further maintained by the presence of terminal COO- groups from L2-. The dc magnetic susceptibility data revealed ferromagnetic coupling between the CoII and LnIII centers within the series, whereas the ac magnetic susceptibility measurements identified only 1, having a highly anisotropic DyIII ion, as a single-molecule magnet in the absence of any external magnetic field, with an energy barrier Ueff of 12.5 K.

Abstract
A simple and eco-friendly montmorillonite K10 (MK10)-catalyzed method for the synthesis of cyclopentenone derivatives from biomass-produced furfural has been developed. The versatility of this protocol is that the reactions were performed under solvent-free conditions and in a short reaction time under heterogeneous catalysis. Montmorillonite K10 is mostly explored as a heterogeneous catalyst since it is inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

Abstract
The aim of this perspective is to summarise the use of the reported 3d-4f Coordination Clusters (CCs) in catalytic reactions and to demonstrate the potential of this emerging field. The pioneering work of Shibasaki, Matsunaga and others, demonstrated the use of 3d-4f in situ systems to catalyse asymmetric organic transformations. Our recent studies show that well characterised 3d-4f CCs catalyse numerous organic transformations and useful mechanistic aspects of their catalysis can be obtained. Furthermore, we have shown that by manipulation of the metal ion coordination environment; the nature of the 3d and lanthanide ions and the organic periphery of the ligand can all improve the efficacy of a 3d-4f CC catalyst. All in situ formed and well characterized 3d-4f CCs involved in catalysis are discussed.

Abstract
trans-4,5-Diamino-cyclopent-2-enones (CP) are usually prepared by Lewis acid-catalyzed condensation of furfural and a secondary amine in an organic solvent. The reaction proceeds through the formation of a Stenhouse salt (SS) intermediate followed by an electrocyclization reaction to afford the desired CP. Herein, we described the use of Cu(OTf)2 as a very efficient catalyst for the synthesis of CP in water at room temperature. Furthermore, the mild reaction conditions, catalyst reusability, and outstanding functional group tolerance suggest that this CP platform can be further used in chemical biology.
