Ligand Design for Luminescent Lanthanide-Containing Metallopolymers

Sensitization of Europium Oxide Nanoparticles Enhances Signal-to-Noise over Autofluorescence with Time-Gated Luminescence Detection

Clinical translation of nanoparticle-based therapeutics has been limited, and a lack of preclinical delivery characterization is partly to blame, limiting our understanding of the mechanisms of failure. The improvement of the preclinical delivery assessment requires nanoparticles with higher detectability. This work focused on the exploration of several aromatic carboxylic ligands (terephthalic acid, quinaldic acid, and kynurenic acid) for the sensitization of europium oxide nanoparticles with a long emission lifetime to overcome cellular autofluorescence, a key confounder of detection in luminescence-based bioimaging. A facile one-pot synthesis and ligand exchange process generated and sensitized ultrasmall Eu2O3 cores. As reflected in the emission spectra and lifetimes, ligand binding yielded unique coordination environments around Eu3+. Then, the efficacy of sensitization was tested against the autofluorescence provided by tissue lysate. Normal (simultaneous excite-read) measurements showed integrated signal improvements over autofluorescence of 2.2-, 3.9-, and 14.0-fold for EuTA, EuQA, and EuKA, respectively. In time-gated mode, the improvements over autofluorescence were more dramatic with fold differences of 75-, 89-, and 108-fold for EuTA, EuQA, and EuKA, respectively. The investigation of novel sensitizers expands the breadth of the field of sensitized lanthanide oxide nanoparticles, and the signal enhancement observed with sensitization and time-gating supports the utility of the generated samples for future bioimaging applications.

Utility of all-pyrazole heteroscorpionates in f-element chemistry

Since their discovery in 1966, scorpionate ligands have been utilized to make coordination compounds for a variety of applications such as: studying organometallic reactions, biomimetic complexes, light-emitting materials and single-ion magnets. The recent development of a solvent-free pyrazole substitution chemistry has yielded the quantitative synthesis of asymmetrically functionalized all-pyrazole heteroscorpionate ligands. In this frontier article, we highlight the utility of all-pyrazole heteroscorpionates, specifically, nitro-trispyrazolylborates, in f-element chemistry. They offer great versatility in coordinating ability, donor strength, steric bulk and even optical charge transfer properties, all of which can be used to tune the properties of resultant complexes with metal ions. We show how they can impart structural diversity, sensitize Ln3+ luminescence and engender magnetic anisotropy and slow magnetic relaxation in the ion they coordinate. Additionally, we comment on the future of functionalized trispyrazolyl scorpionates, which includes enabling post-synthetic modifications of f-element complexes and becoming a platform to study the electronic properties of low oxidation state actinides.

An alternating conduction-insulation "molecular fence" model from fluorinated metallopolymers

Introducing fluoroalkyl chains into metallopolymers is a prerequisite to studying the self-organization effect of fluoroalkyl chains and their structure-property relationship. In this work, we present a fluorinated metallopolymer to build an alternating conduction-insulation "molecular fence" model synthesized by the coordination of Ru(II) and a bis-terpyridine-end-capped-phenyl (BTP) ligand modified with fluoroalkyl chains. Taking advantage of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), a well-aligned periodic linear layered structure is observed clearly, which provides the most direct visualization of the self-organization effect of fluoroalkyl chains for the first time. In addition, combining ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we find that fluoroalkyl chains demonstrate a septation effect between two adjacent metallopolymer chains and further restrain the occurrence of interchain charge-transfer transition (ICCT) due to their closed packed structure. This "molecular fence" model can provide a novel route for electron conduction in molecular networks and guide potential applications in the materials science field.

Dual-sensitized Eu(III)/Tb(III) complexes exhibiting tunable luminescence emission and their application in cellular-imaging

Two novel dual-photosensitized stable complexes, namely [Eu(dpq)(BTFA)₃] (1) and [Tb(dpq)(BTFA)₃] (2), have been successfully assembled via a mixed ligand approach using dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq) and 3-benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone (BTFA). The crystallographic data reveal mononuclear lanthanide cores in both 1 and 2, in which each eight-coordinated Ln(III) ion is located in a slightly distorted dodecahedron (D_2d). The room-temperature photoluminescence spectra of complexes 1 and 2 indicate that both BTFA and dpq can effectively sensitize Eu(III) and Tb(III) characteristic luminescence. Moreover, heterometallic Ln-complexes can be synthesized, leading to a new series of differently doped EuxTb1-x complexes. Luminescence experiments on them reveal dual-emission peaks of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺, which lead to a gradual change in the luminous colour between yellow-green, yellow, orange, orange-red and red upon increasing the Eu³⁺ content. On the basis of the intrinsic strong emission properties and nontoxic nature of complexes 1 and 2, we explore their potential application as cellular imaging agents. Fluorescence microscopy data suggest the cytosolic and nuclear localization of 1 and 2 in HeLa and MCF-7 cells.

Bottom-Up Approach for the Rational Loading of Linear Oligomers and Polymers with Lanthanides

The adducts between luminescent lanthanide tris(β-diketonate)s and diimine or triimine ligands have been explored exhaustively for their exceptional photophysical properties. Their formation, stability, and structures in solution, together with the design of extended metallopolymers exploiting these building blocks, remain, however, elusive. The systematic peripheral substitution of tridentate 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine binding units (Lk = L1-L5), taken as building blocks for linear oligomers and polymers, allows a fine-tuning of their affinity toward neutral [Ln(hfa)₃] (hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) lanthanide containers in the [LkLn(hfa)₃] adducts. Two trends emerge with (i) an unusual pronounced thermodynamic selectivity for midrange lanthanides (Ln = Eu) and (ii) an intriguing influence of remote peripheral substitutions of the benzimidazole rings on the affinity of the tridentate unit for [Ln(hfa)₃]. These trends are amplified upon the connection of several tridentate binding units via their benzimidazole rings to give linear segmental dimers (L6) and trimers (L7), which are considered as models for programming linear Wolf-Type II metallopollymers. Modulation of the affinity between the terminal and central binding units in the linear multitridentate ligands deciphers the global decrease of metal-ligand binding strengths with an increase in the length of the receptors (monomer → dimer → trimer → polymer). Application of the site binding model shed light onto the origin of the variation of the thermodynamic affinities: a prerequisite for the programmed loading of a polymer backbone with luminescent lanthanide β-diketonates. Analysis of the crystal structures for these adducts reveals delicate correlations between the chemical bond lengths measured in the solid state (or bond valence parameters) and the metal-ligand affinities operating in solution.

Tuning of the Network Dimensionality and Photoluminescent Properties in Homo- and Heteroleptic Lanthanide Coordination Polymers

Targeted synthesis, through a heteroleptic methodology, has resulted in three types of lanthanide (Ln) coordination polymers (CPs) with tailored dimensionality, tunable photoluminescent colors, and distinct luminescence quenching upon UV and X-ray irradiation. The homoleptic Ln(tpbz)(NO₃)₂ [CP-1; tpbz = 4-(2,2':6',2″-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzoate] is assembled from Ln cations and bridging tpbz ligands, accompanied by the decoration of NO₃^- anions, forming a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure. The presence of ancillary dicarboxylate linkers, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate (tdc), promotes additional bridging between 1D chains to form a two-dimensional layer and a three-dimensional framework for Ln(tpbz)(bdc) (CP-2) and Ln(tpbz)(tdc) (CP-3), respectively. The multicolor and luminescence properties of the obtained CPs were investigated, displaying typical red Eu^III-based and green Tb^III-based emissions. The Sm^III-bearing CP-1-CP-3, however, exhibit diverse ratiometric Ln^III- and ligand-based emissions, with the photoluminescent colors varying from pink to orange to cyan. Notably, the Tb^III-containing CP-1-CP-3 display distinct luminescence quenching upon continuous exposure to UV and X-ray irradiation. To our best knowledge, CP-2-Tb represents one of the most sensitive UV dosage probes (3.2 × 10^-7 J) among all CPs.

Effect of the aromatic substituent on the para-position of pyridine-bis(oxazoline) sensitizers on the emission efficiency of their EuIII and TbIII complexes

Two efficient lanthanide ion sensitizers 2,6-bis(oxazoline)-4-phenyl-pyridine (PyboxPh, 1) and 2,6-bis(oxazoline)-4-thiophen-2-yl-pyridine (Pybox2Th, 2) were synthesized. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with cell parameters a = 16.3794(4) Å, b = 7.2856(2) Å, c = 11.7073(3) Å, β = 97.229(1)° and V = 1385.97(6) Å3. 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with cell parameters a = 5.9472(2), b = 16.0747(6), c = 14.3716(5) Å, β = 93.503(1)° and V = 1371.35(8) Å3. Photophysical characterization of 1 shows that its triplet state energy is located at 22 250 cm-1 and efficient energy transfer is observed for EuIII and TbIII. Solutions of [Ln(PyboxPh)3]3+ in dichloromethane display an emission efficiency of 37.2% for Ln[double bond, length as m-dash]Eu and 24.0% for Ln[double bond, length as m-dash]Tb. The excited state lifetimes for EuIII and TbIII are 2.227 ms and 723 μs, respectively. The triplet state energy of 2 is located at 19 280 cm-1 and is therefore too low to efficiently sensitize TbIII emission. However, the sensitization of EuIII is effective, with an emission quantum yield of 14.5% and an excited state lifetime of 714 μs. This shows that the derivatization of the chelator is strongly influenced by the aromatic substituents on the para-position of the pyridine ring. New isostructural 1 : 1 complexes of PyboxPh with EuIII (3) and TbIII (4) were also isolated and crystallize in the triclinic space group P1[combining macron] with cell parameters a = 9.1845(2) Å, b = 10.3327(2) Å, c = 11.9654(2) Å, α = 98.419(1)°, β = 108.109(1)°, γ = 91.791(1)°, V = 1064.08(4) Å3 and a = 7.8052(1) Å, b = 11.8910(1) Å, c = 14.2668(2) Å, α = 72.557(1)°, β = 86.355(1)°, γ = 77.223(1)°, V = 1231.95(3) Å3, respectively.

Two Beta-Phosphorylamide Compounds as Ligands for Sm3+, Eu3+, and Tb3+: X-ray Crystallography and Luminescence Properties

This paper describes the synthesis of two beta-phosphorylamide ligands and their coordination chemistry with the Ln ions Tb³⁺, Eu³⁺, and Sm³⁺. Both the ligands and Ln complexes were characterized by IR, NMR, MS, and X-ray crystallography. The luminescence properties of the Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ complexes were also characterized, including the acquisition of lifetime decay curves. In the solid state, the Tb³⁺ and Sm³⁺ ligand complexes were found to have a 2:2 stoichiometry when analyzed by X-ray diffraction. In these structures, the Ln ion was bound by both oxygen atoms of each beta-phosphorylamide moiety of the ligands. The Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ complexes were modestly emissive as solutions in acetonitrile, with lifetime values that fell within typical ranges.

Two hexanuclear lanthanide Ln6III clusters featuring remarkable magnetocaloric effect and slow magnetic relaxation behavior

Two novel hexanuclear lanthanide clusters (1 and 2) were successfully prepared. Magnetic investigations reveal that 1 exhibits remarkable magnetocaloric effect and 2 displays interesting slow magnetic relaxation behaviors.

Design, synthesis, and characterization of novel organic–inorganic hybrid polymeric materials for electroluminescence applications

‘Windmill’-shaped LnIII4 (LnIII = Gd and Dy) clusters: magnetocaloric effect and single-molecule-magnet behavior

Two ‘windmill’-shaped Ln₄ clusters (1 and 2) have been synthesized. The magnetic study reveals that 1 displays a larger cryogenic magnetocaloric effect, while 2 exhibits SMM behavior.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Metallocarbene-Containing Polymers

Metallopolymers are an emerging class of materials with potential utility as semiconductors, catalysts, optical device components, and stimuli responsive networks. While polymer frameworks have been decorated with an array of organometallic moieties, the incorporation of metallocarbenes has been largely overlooked. Here, we report ring-opening metathesis polymerization as a strategy for the synthesis of Fischer carbene-containing polymers. High degrees of polymerization were observed (>800 repeats), and the isolated materials exhibited exceptional solubility and thermal stability. The tungsten carbene subunits were readily incorporated into block copolymers and could be modified through subsequent transformations. Moreover, the metallocarbene polymers were found to release carbon monoxide upon exposure to light or oxygen, which is unusual for tungsten carbene complexes. These metallocarbene-containing polymers could represent new platforms for the development of functional materials.

Metallopolymers for advanced sustainable applications

Since the development of metallopolymers, there has been tremendous interest in the applications of this type of materials. The interest in these materials stems from their potential use in industry as catalysts, biomedical agents in healthcare, energy storage and production as well as climate change mitigation. The past two decades have clearly shown exponential growth in the development of many new classes of metallopolymers that address these issues. Today, metallopolymers are considered to be at the forefront for discovering new and sustainable heterogeneous catalysts, therapeutics for drug-resistant diseases, energy storage and photovoltaics, molecular barometers and thermometers, as well as carbon dioxide sequesters. The focus of this review is to highlight the advances in design of metallopolymers with specific sustainable applications.

Large magnetocaloric effect and remarkable single-molecule-magnet behavior in triangle-assembled LnIII6 clusters

Two intriguing triangle-assembled LnIII6 clusters (1 and 2) have been synthesized. The magnetic study reveals that 1 displays a larger cryogenic magnetocaloric effect, while 2 exhibits remarkable SMM behaviors.

Robust and Reversible Vapoluminescent Organometallic Copper Polymers

Emissive organometallic polymers are an important class of functional materials characterized by the combined photoluminescent features of organometallic molecules and the properties of traditional polymers. In this work, the emissive organometallic complex, [CuBr(PPh₃ )₂ (4-methylpyridine)], is successfully, mechanically ground into a random copolymer built on 4-(diphenylphosphino)styrene (DPVP) and n-butyl acrylate (BA) monomers. The resultant hybrid materials successfully inherit the emissive centers, and are significantly reinforced by the copper complexes as chemical crosslinkers in the polymeric continuum. These organometallic polymers are also proved to have excellent vapoluminescent properties, exhibiting unique responses to many organic solvent vapors, reflecting their rapid loss and recovery of photoluminescence. Mechanically robust and flexible films prepared with these organometallic Cu(I)-polymers are tested as recoverable sensors for hazardous volatile chemical compounds (VOCs) such as toluene, acetone, chloroform, and dichloromethane, and the low limits of detection (LOD) can reach as low as 1 × 10^-3 -8 × 10^-3 mg L^-1 (0.2-3.3 ppmV, parts per million-volume) for various VOCs. This work sheds lights on the design and fabrication of organometallic polymers for advanced applications.

Photophysical characterization of a highly luminescent divalent-europium-containing azacryptate

We report a new luminescent EuII-containing complex. The complex is excited with visible light, leading to emission centered at 447 nm with a lifetime of 1.25 μs. Computational studies suggest that the steric bulk of the ligand is a major factor influencing the wavelength of emission.

Effects of structures of bidentate Schiff base type bonded-ligands derived from benzaldehyde on the photoluminescence performance of polymer–rare earth complexes

Two kinds of bidentate Schiff base ligands derived from benzaldehyde, benzaldehyde/m-aminophenol (BAMA) type and benzaldehyde/glutamic acid (BAGL) type ligands, were synchronously synthesized and bonded on the backbone of polysulfone (PSF) through molecular design and by polymer reactions, and two functional polymers, PSF-BAMA and PSF-BAGL, were obtained.

Cooperative loading of multisite receptors with lanthanide containers: an approach for organized luminescent metallopolymers

Metal loading of multi-terdentate receptors with [Eu(pbta)₃] provides the first anti-cooperative factors large enough for programming metal alternation in lanthanidopolymers at room temperature.

Metal-containing (bio)organic polymers are materials of continuously increasing importance for applications in energy storage and conversion, drug delivery, shape-memory items, supported catalysts, organic conductors and smart photonic devices. The embodiment of luminescent components provides a revolution in lighting and signaling with the ever-increasing development of polymeric light-emitting devices. Despite the unique properties expected from the introduction of optically and magnetically active lanthanides into organic polymers, the deficient control of the metal loading currently limits their design to empirical and poorly reproducible materials. We show here that the synthetic efforts required for producing soluble multi-site host systems Lk are largely overcome by the virtue of reversible thermodynamics for mastering the metal loading with the help of only two parameters: (1) the affinity of the luminescent lanthanide container for a single binding site and (2) the cooperative effect which modulates the successive fixation of metallic units to adjacent sites. When unsymmetrical perfluorobenzene-trifluoroacetylacetonate co-ligands (pbta^–) are selected for balancing the charge of the trivalent lanthanide cations, Ln³⁺, in six-coordinate [Ln(pbta)₃] containers, the explored anti-cooperative complexation processes induce nearest-neighbor intermetallic interactions twice as large as thermal energy at room temperature (RT = 2.5 kJ mol^–1). These values have no precedent when using standard symmetrical containers and they pave the way for programming metal alternation in luminescent lanthanidopolymers.

Pybox-Iron(II) Spin-Crossover Complexes with Substituent Effects from the 4-Position of the Pyridine Ring (Pybox = 2,6-Bis(oxazolin-2-yl)pyridine)

Spin-crossover (SCO) behavior of a series of [Fe(X-pybox)2](ClO4)2 was investigated, where X-pybox stands for 4-X-substituted 2,6-bis(oxazolin-2-yl)pyridine with X = H, Cl, Ph, CH3O, and CH3S. We confirmed that the mother compound [Fe(H-pybox)2](ClO4)2 underwent SCO above room temperature. After X was introduced, the SCO temperatures (T1/2) were modulated as 310, 230, and 330 K for X = Cl, Ph, and CH3S, respectively. The CH3O derivative possessed the high-spin state down to 2 K. Crystallographic analysis for X = H, Cl, CH3O, and CH3S was successful, being consistent with the results of the magnetic study. Distorted coordination structures stabilize the HS (high-spin) state, and the highest degree of the coordination structure distortion is found in the CH3O derivative. A plot of T1/2 against the Hammett substituent constant σp showed a positive relation. Solution susceptometry was also performed to remove intermolecular interaction and rigid crystal lattice effects, and the T1/2’s were determined as 260, 270, 240, 170, and 210 K for X = H, Cl, Ph, CH3O, and CH3S, respectively, in acetone. The substituent effect on T1/2 became very distinct, and it is clarified that electron-donating groups stabilize the HS state.
