Abstract
The dialkyl-ortho-biaryl class of phosphines, commonly known as Buchwald-type ligands, are among the most important phosphines in Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling. These ligands have also been successfully applied to several synthetically valuable Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling methodologies and, as demonstrated in this work, are top performing ligands in Ni-catalyzed Suzuki Miyaura Coupling (SMC) and C-N coupling reactions, even outperforming commonly employed bisphosphines like dppf in many circumstances. However, little is known about their structure-reactivity relationships (SRRs) with Ni, and limited examples of well-defined, catalytically relevant Ni complexes with Buchwald-type ligands exist. In this work, we report the analysis of Buchwald-type phosphine SRRs in four representative Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Our study was guided by data-driven classification analysis, which together with mechanistic organometallic studies of structurally characterized Ni(0), Ni(I), and Ni(II) complexes allowed us to rationalize reactivity patterns in catalysis. Overall, we expect that this study will serve as a platform for further exploration of this ligand class in organonickel chemistry as well as in the development of new Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling methodologies.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation has emerged as a powerful tool in organic synthesis and electrosynthesis as well as in the development of new methodologies for producing fine chemicals. In order to achieve efficient and selective C-H functionalization, different strategies have been used to accelerate the C-H activation step, including the incorporation of directing groups in the substrate that facilitate coordination to the catalyst. In this review, we try to underscore that the understanding the mechanisms of the catalytic cycle and the reactivity or redox activity of the key metal cyclic intermediates in these reactions is the basis for controlling the selectivity of synthesis and electrosynthesis. Combination of the electrosynthesis and voltammetry with traditional synthetic and physico-chemical methods allows one to achieve selective transformation of C-H bonds to functionalized C-C or C-X (X=heteroatom or halogen) bonds which may encourage organic chemists to use it in the future more often. The possibilities and the benefits of electrochemical techniques are analyzed and summarized.

Abstract
The organonickel complexes [Ni(Phbpy)X] (X = Br, OAc, CN) were obtained for the first time in a direct base-assisted arene C(sp2)-H cyclometalation reaction from the rather unreactive precursor materials NiX2 and HPhbpy (6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine) or from the versatile precursor [Ni(HPhbpy)Br2]2. Different from previously necessary C‒Br oxidative addition at Ni(0), an extended scan of reaction conditions allowed quantitative access to the title compound from Ni(II) on synthetically useful timescales through base-assisted C‒H activation in nonpolar media at elevated temperature. Optimisation of the reaction conditions (various bases, solvents, methods) identified 1:2 mixtures of acetate and carbonate as unrivalled synergetic base pairs in the optimum protocol that holds promise as a readily usable and easily tuneable access to a wide range of direct nickelation products. While for the base-assisted C‒H metalation of the noble metals Ru, Ir, Rh, or Pd, this acetate/carbonate method has been established for a few years, our study represents the leap into the world of the base metals of the 3d series.

Abstract
Metalloenzymes catalyze many important reactions by managing the proton and electron flux at the enzyme active site. The motifs utilized to facilitate these transformations include hemilabile, redox-active, and so called proton responsive sites. Given the importance of incorporating and understanding these motifs in the area of coordination chemistry and catalysis, we highlight recent milestones in the field. Work incorporating the triad of hemilability, redox-activity, and proton responsivity into single ligand scaffolds will be described.

Abstract
The mechanism of Ni-catalyzed ortho C(sp2)-H oxidative cycloaddition of aromatic amides with internal alkynes containing 2-pyridinylmethylamine directing group was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The C-H cleavage step proceeds via σ-complex-assisted metathesis (σ-CAM) with an alkenyl-Ni(II) complex. This is in contrast to the more common carboxylate/carbonate-assisted concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism in related Ni-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization reactions with N,N-bidentate directing groups. In this reaction, the alkyne not only serves as the coupling partner, but also facilitates the σ-CAM C-H metalation both kinetically and thermodynamically. The subsequent functionalization of the five-membered nickelacycle proceeds via alkyne insertion into the Ni-C bond to form a seven-membered nickelacycle. This process proceeds with high levels of regioselectivity to form a C-C bond with sterically more encumbered alkyne terminus. This unusual regioselectivity is due to steric repulsions with the directing group that is coplanar with the alkyne in the migratory insertion transition state. The C-N bond reductive elimination to form the isoquinolone cycloadduct is promoted by PPh3 complexation to the Ni center and the use of flexible 2-pyridinylmethylamine directing group. The origin of the cis-trans isomerism of alkene byproduct was also explained by computations.

Abstract
Ligands with reactive carbon sites in the periphery of a metal center have emerged as a powerful approach for metal-ligand bond activation. These reactive carbon sites are commonly generated by deprotonation strategies. Carbon-silicon bond cleavage is a potential alternative to access such constructs. Herein, the monodesilylation of bis-silyl-substituted P,N scaffold PNSi2 in the coordination sphere of [RhI (Cl)(CO)(PNSi2 )] (1) with sodium azide is disclosed. This affords a unique dinucleating anionic κ2 -C,N-κ1 -P ligand with a carbanionic methine carbon atom directly bound to rhodium as part of a four-membered Rh-N-C-C rhodacycle. This dimer undergoes meta-pyridine C-H activation facilitated by weak bases, which leads to a desymmetrization of the system and provides a σ,π-bridging 3-pyridyl fragment bound to RhI . The facile Si-C cleavage strategy may pave the way to studying the reactivity and functionalization of a variety of κ2 -C,N-coordinated pyridine scaffolds for selective transformations.

Abstract
Based on previous work related to the design and application of rigid tridentate phosphine-pyridine-phenyl coordination offered by a PNC-pincer ligand upon cyclometalation to nickel, the synthesis, spectroscopic and solid state characterization and redox-reactivity of two NiII(PNC) complexes featuring either a methyl (2CH3 ) or CF3 co-ligand (2CF3 ) are described. One-electron oxidation is proposed to furnish C-C reductive elimination, as deduced from a combined chemical, electrochemical, spectroscopic and computational study. One-electron reduction results in a ligand-centered radical anion, as supported by electrochemistry, UV spectroelectrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. This further attenuates the breadth of chemical reactivity offered by such PNC-pincer ligands.

The nickel PNP pincer complex ( i PrPNP)NiPh ( i PrPNP = κP,κN,κP-N(CH2CH2P i Pr2)2) was prepared by reacting ( i PrPNP)NiBr with PhMgCl or deprotonating [( i PrPNHP)NiPh]Y ( i PrPNHP = κP,κN,κP-HN(CH2CH2P i Pr2)2; Y = Br, PF6) with KO t Bu. The byproducts of the PhMgCl reaction were identified as [( i PrPNHP)NiPh]Br and ( i PrPNP')NiPh ( i PrPNP' = κP,κN,κP-N(CH=CHP i Pr2)(CH2CH2P i Pr2)). The methyl analog ( i PrPNP)NiMe was synthesized from the reaction of ( i PrPNP)NiBr with MeLi, although it was contaminated with ( i PrPNP')NiMe due to ligand oxidation. Protonation of ( i PrPNP)NiX (X = Br, Ph, Me) with various acids, such as HCl, water, and MeOH, was studied in C6D6. Nitrogen protonation was shown to be the most favorable process, producing a cationic species [( i PrPNHP)NiX]+ with the NH moiety hydrogen-bonded to the conjugate base (i.e., Cl-, HO-, or MeO-). Protonation of the Ni-C bond was observed at room temperature with ( i PrPNP)NiMe, whereas at 70 °C with ( i PrPNP)NiPh, both resulting in [( i PrPNHP)NiCl]Cl as the final product. Protonation of ( i PrPNP)NiBr was complicated by site exchange between Br- and the conjugate base and by the degradation of the pincer complexes. Indene, which lacks hydrogen-bonding capability, was unable to protonate ( i PrPNP)NiPh and ( i PrPNP)NiMe, despite being more acidic than water and MeOH. Neutral and cationic nickel pincer complexes involved in this study, including ( i PrPNP')NiBr, ( i PrPNP)NiPh, ( i PrPNP')NiPh, ( i PrPNP)NiMe, [( i PrPNHP)NiPh]Y (Y = Br, PF6, BPh4), [( i PrPNHP)NiPh]2[NiCl4], [( i PrPNHP)NiMe]Y (Y = Cl, Br, BPh4), [( i PrPNHP)NiBr]Br, and [( i PrPNHP)NiCl]Cl, were characterized by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
Thermal or photolytic activation of well-defined mononuclear [Co(N3)(PNP)] (PNP = 2,2'-bis(diisopropylphosphino)-4,4'-ditolylamido) results in the structurally characterized dinuclear species [Co(μ-N;κ3-P,N,N-PNPN)]2 (3), with two N-bridging phosphiniminato bridgeheads. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations indicate the intermediacy of a mononuclear cobalt-nitrido complex, followed by N-migratory insertion into a Co-P bond. Reaction of 3 with two equiv. HCl leads to rupture of the dimer with formation of mononuclear [CoCl(PNPNH)] (4) by protonation of the N-bridges.

Abstract
This computational study reveals electrophilic cleavage pathways for substrates with N,N-bidentate directing centers in Ni(ii)-catalyzed C–H iodination with molecular iodine.
The density functional theory method is used to elucidate the elementary steps of Ni(ii)-catalyzed C(sp2)–H iodination with I2 and substrates bearing N,N′-bidentate directing centers, amide-oxazoline (AO) and 8-aminoquinoline (AQ). The relative stability of the lowest energy high- and low-spin electronic states of the catalyst and intermediates is found to be an important factor for all of the steps in the reaction. As a result, two-state reactivity for these systems is reported, where the reaction is initiated on the triplet surface and generates a high energy singlet nickelacycle. It is shown that the addition of Na2CO3 base to the reaction mixture facilitates C–H activation. The presence of I2 in the reaction provides the much needed driving force for the C–H activation and nickelacycle formation and ultimately reacts to form a new C–I bond through either a redox neutral electrophilic cleavage (EC) pathway or a one-electron reductive cleavage (REC) pathway. The previously proposed Ni(ii)/Ni(iv) and homolytic cleavage pathways are found to be higher in energy. The nature of the substrate is found to have a large impact on the relative stability of the lowest electronic states and on the stability of the nickelacycle resulting from C–H activation.

Abstract
The novel tridentate PNNOH pincer ligand LH features a reactive 2-hydroxypyridine functionality as well as a bipyridyl-methylphosphine skeleton for meridional coordination. This proton-responsive ligand coordinates in a straightforward manner to RuCl(CO)(H)(PPh3)3 to generate complex 1. The methoxy-protected analogue LMe was also coordinated to Ru(II) for comparison. Both species have been crystallographically characterized. Site-selective deprotonation of the 2-hydroxypyridine functionality to give 1' was achieved using both mild (DBU) and strong bases (KOtBu and KHMDS), with no sign of involvement of the phosphinomethyl side arm that was previously established as the reactive fragment. Complex 1' is catalytically active in the dehydrogenation of formic acid to generate CO-free hydrogen in three consecutive runs as well as for the dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols, giving high conversions to different esters and outperforming structurally related PNN ligands lacking the NOH fragment. DFT calculations suggest more favorable release of H2 through reversible reactivity of the hydroxypyridine functionality relative to the phosphinomethyl side arm.

Abstract
This communication describes a series of oxidatively induced intramolecular arene C-H activation reactions of NiII model complexes to yield NiIV σ-aryl products. These reactions proceed within 10 min at room temperature, which represents among the mildest conditions reported for C-H cleavage at a Ni center. A combination of density functional theory and preliminary experimental mechanistic studies implicate a pathway involving initial 2e- oxidation of the NiII starting materials by the F+ transfer reagent N-fluoro-2,4,6-trimethylpyridinium triflate followed by triflate-assisted C-H cleavage at NiIV to yield the products.

Abstract
The new organonickel complexes [(R-PyMA)Ni(Mes)X] [R-PyMA = N-aryl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine; aryl = phenyl, 2,6-Me2-, 3,5-Me2-, 2,4,6-Me3-, 2,6-iPr2-, 3,5-(OMe)2-, 2-NO2-4-Me-, 4-NO2-, 2-CF3-, and 2-CF3-6-F-phenyl; Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl; X = F, Cl, Br, or I] were obtained as approximate 1/1 cis and trans isomeric mixtures or pure cis isomers depending on the PyMA ligand and X. The [(R-PyMA)Ni(Mes)X] complexes with X = Br or Cl were directly synthesized from the precursors trans-[(PPh3)2Ni(Mes)X], while [(PyMA)Ni(Mes)X] derivatives with X = F or I were obtained from [(PyMA)Ni(Mes)Br] through X exchange reactions. Although density functional theory (DFT) calculations show a preference for the sterically favored cis isomers, both isomers could be observed in many cases; in three cases, even single crystals for X-ray diffraction could be obtained for the trans isomers. Possible intermediates for the isomerization were investigated by DFT calculations. All complexes were studied by multiple spectroscopic means, electrochemistry, and spectroelectrochemistry (for the reduction processes). The long-wavelength metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) absorptions vary markedly with the R substituent of the ligand and the cathodic electrochemical potentials to a far smaller degree. Both are almost invariable upon variation of X. All of this is in line with Ni-based and π*-based lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs). In line with the unsymmetric character of the NPy^Nmethanimine ligand, electrochemistry and MLCT transitions seem to not correspond to the same type of π* LUMO, making these PyMA ligands more interesting than the symmetric heteroaromatic polypyridine ligands such as 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy; NPy^NPy) and N,N-diaryl-substituted aliphatic α-diimines (Nmethanimine^Nmethanimine) such as the diaza-1,3-butadienes (DAB). First attempts to use these complexes in Negishi-type cross-coupling reactions were successful.
