Thiocyanate-Ligated Heterobimetallic {PtM} Lantern Complexes Including a Ferromagnetically Coupled 1D Coordination Polymer

Assessment of Iron-Based Spin-Orbit Coupling Effects in Pt-Fe Heterobimetallic Lantern Complexes via 57Fe Mössbauer Spectroscopy

A series of heterobimetallic lantern complexes, [PtFe(SOCR)4(pyX)] where R = Me, X = H (1), X = NH2 (2), X = SMe (3); R = Ph, X = H (4), X = NH2 (5), X = SMe (6), have been prepared and characterized spectroscopically. Compounds 1, 4, and 5 are reported herein for the first time. The high-spin iron(II) sites of 1-6 have been investigated using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Although the isomer shift of these species is nearly identical, their quadrupole splitting exhibits a much larger variation. Moreover, the zero-field Mössbauer spectra of 3-5 show surprising changes over time which are likely indicative of small structural distortions. The field dependent Mössbauer study of 1 and 6 revealed a zero field splitting (ZFS) characterized by a relatively large and positive D value. The combined Density Functional Theory (DFT) and ab initio Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) investigation of 1-6 indicates that their ground state is best described using a linear combination of {|xz⟩, |yz⟩} states. Our theoretical analysis suggests that the ZFSs and magnitude of the quadrupole splitting of 1-6 are determined by the spin-orbit coupling of the three lowest orbital states which have a T2g parentage.

Experimental assignment of long-range magnetic communication through Pd & Pt metallophilic contacts

Record-breaking magnetic exchange interactions have previously been reported for 3d-metal dimers of the form [M(Pt(SAc)₄)(pyNO₂)]₂ (M = Ni or Co) that are linked in the solid state via metallophilic Pt⋯Pt bridges. This contrasts the terminally capped monomers [M(Pt(SAc)₄)(py)₂], for which neither metallophilic bridges nor magnetic exchange interactions are found. Computational modeling has shown that the magnetic exchange interaction is facilitated by the pseudo-closed shell d⁸⋯d⁸ metallophilic interaction between the filled Pt²⁺ 5d _{z ²} orbitals. We present here inelastic neutron scattering experiments on these complexes, wherein the dimers present an oscillatory momentum-transfer-dependence of the magnetic transitions. This allows for the unequivocal experimental assignment of the distance between the coupled ions, which matches exactly the coupling pathway via the metallophilic bridges. Furthermore, we have synthesized and magnetically characterized the isostructural palladium-analogues. The magnetic coupling across the Pd⋯Pd bridge is found through SQUID-magnetometry and FD-FT THz-EPR spectroscopy to be much weaker than via the Pt⋯Pt bridge. The weaker coupling is traced to the larger radial extent of the 5d _{z ²} orbitals compared to that of the 4d _{z ²} orbitals. The existence of a palladium metallophilic interaction is evaluated computationally from potential surface cuts along the metal stretching direction. Similar behavior is found for the Pd⋯Pd and Pt⋯Pt-systems with clear minima along this coordinate and provide estimates for the force constant for this distortion. The estimated M⋯M stretching frequencies are found to match experimental observed, polarized bands in single-crystal Raman spectra close to 45 cm^-1. This substantiates the existence of energetically relevant Pd⋯Pd metallophilic interactions. The unique properties of both Pt²⁺ and Pd²⁺ constitutes an orthogonal reactivity, which can be utilized for steering both the direction and strength of magnetic interactions.

Hard-Soft Chemistry Design Principles for Predictive Assembly of Single Molecule-Metal Junctions

The achievement of atomic control over the organic-inorganic interface is key to engineering electronic and spintronic properties of molecular devices. We leverage insights from inorganic chemistry to create hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) theory-derived design principles for incorporation of single molecules onto metal electrodes. A single molecule circuit is assembled via a bond between an organic backbone and an under-coordinated metal atom of the electrode surface, typically Au. Here, we study molecular composition factors affecting the junction assembly of coordination complexes containing transition metals atoms on Au electrodes. We employ hetero- and homobimetallic lantern complexes and systematically change the coordination environment to vary the character of the intramolecular bonds relative to the electrode-molecule interaction. We observe that trends in the robustness and chemical selectivity of single molecule junctions formed with a range of linkers correlate with HSAB principles, which have traditionally been used to guide atomic arrangements in the synthesis of coordination complexes. We find that this similarity between the intermolecular electrode-molecule bonding in a molecular circuit and the intramolecular bonds within a coordination complex has implications for the design of metal-containing complexes compatible with electrical measurements on metal electrodes. Our results here show that HSAB principles determine which intramolecular interactions can be compromised by inter molecule-electrode coordination; in particular on Au electrodes, soft-soft metal-ligand bonding is vulnerable to competition from soft-soft Au-linker bonding in the junction. Neutral donor-acceptor intramolecular bonds can be tuned by the Lewis acidity of the transition metal ion, suggesting future synthetic routes toward incorporation of transition metal atoms into molecular junctions for increased functionality of single molecule devices.

Thiolate-Thione Redox-Active Ligand with a Six-Membered Chelate Ring via Template Condensation and Its Pt(II) Complexes

A new template condensation reaction has been discovered in a mixture of Pt(II), thiobenzamide, and base. Four complexes of the general form [Pt(ctaPh^R)₂], R = CH₃ (1a), H (1b), F (1c), Cl (1d), cta = condensed thioamide, have been prepared under similar conditions and thoroughly characterized by ¹H NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, (spectro)electrochemistry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The ligand is redox active and can be reduced from the initial monoanion to a dianionic and then trianionic state. Chemical reduction of 1a with [Cp₂Co] yielded [Cp₂Co]₂[Pt(ctaPh^CH3)₂], [Cp₂Co]₂[1a], which has been similarly characterized with the addition of EPR spectroscopy and SQUID magnetization. The singly reduced form containing [1a]^1-, (nBu₄N)[Pt(ctaPh^CH3)₂], has been generated in situ and characterized by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies. DFT studies of 1b, [1b]^1-, and [1b]^2- confirm the location of additional electrons in exclusively ligand-based orbitals. A detailed analysis of this redox-active ligand, with emphasis on the characteristics that favor noninnocent behavior in six-membered chelate rings, is included.

Paramagnetic Metal-Metal Bonded Heterometallic Complexes

Significant progress has been made in the past 10-15 years on the design, synthesis, and properties of multimetallic coordination complexes with heterometallic metal-metal bonds that are paramagnetic. Several general classes have been explored including heterobimetallic compounds, heterotrimetallic compounds of either linear or triangular geometry, discrete molecular compounds containing a linear array of more than three metal atoms, and coordination polymers with a heterometallic metal-metal bonded backbone. We focus in this Review on the synthetic methods employed to access these compounds, their structural features, magnetic properties, and electronic structure. Regarding the metal-metal bond distances, we make use of the formal shortness ratio (FSR) for comparison of bond distances between a broad range of metal atoms of different sizes. The magnetic properties of these compounds can be described using an extension of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules to cases where two magnetic ions interact via a third metal atom. In describing the electronic structure, we focus on the ability (or not) of electrons to be delocalized across heterometallic bonds, allowing for rationalizations and predictions of single-molecule conductance measurements in paramagnetic heterometallic molecular wires.

Impact of the synthetic approach on the magnetic properties and homogeneity of mixed crystals of tunable layered ferromagnetic coordination polymers

Different synthetic routes were applied to synthesize mixed crystals of [Co_xNi_1−x(NCS)₂(4-tert-butylpyridine)₂]_n that finally results in homogeneous samples for which the critical temperature can be tuned as function of the Co : Ni ratio.

Thermodynamically stable and metastable coordination polymers synthesized from solution and the solid state

Different Fe(ii) and Cd(ii) thiocyanate coordination compounds with unusual topology including isomeric modifications were synthesized with 4-picoline and investigated in regard to their thermodynamic relations.

Discrete and polymeric ensembles based on dinuclear molybdenum(vi) building blocks with adaptive carbohydrazide ligands: from the design to catalytic epoxidation

Discrete and polymeric ensembles based on dimolybdenum(vi) units with adaptive carbohydrazide ligands are described. The polymeric complexes are efficient catalysts for cyclooctene epoxidation under eco-friendly conditions.

New isomeric Ni(NCS)2 coordination compounds: crystal structures, magnetic properties as well as ex situ and in situ investigations on their synthesis and transition behaviour

Some stable and metastable isomeric Ni(NCS)₂ chain compounds were synthesized and structurally characterized and investigated for their transformation behavior and their magnetic properties using a variety of methods.

Structural diversity in Cd(NCS)2-3-cyanopyridine coordination compounds: synthesis, crystal structures and thermal properties

Five new compounds with the compositions [Cd(NCS)2(3-cyanopyridine)2] n  · 3-cyanopyridine (1), [Cd(NCS)2(3-cyanopyridine)2] n  · 1/3 3-cyanopyridine (2), [Cd(NCS)2(3-cyanopyridine)2] n (3), {[Cd(NCS)2]2(3-cyanopyridine)3} n (4), and {[Cd(NCS)2]3(3-cyanopyridine)4} n (5) have been obtained by the reaction of Cd(NCS)2 with 3-cyanopyridine in different solvents. While large amounts of compounds 1–4 could be prepared as powders, only a few single crystals of 5 were accidently obtained. Thermoanalytical investigations have shown that 4 could also be obtained by annealing of 1 or 2 and that under slightly different conditions 5 could be obtained as part of a mixture with 4. The crystal structures of all compounds can be divided in two sets of compounds. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 consist of chains in which the Cd cations show three different coordination environments and in which the coligands are only terminally bonded. In the structures of 4 and 5 similar chains are observed, which are connected into layers via some of the 3-cyanopyridine coligands.

Creation and stabilisation of tuneable open metal sites in thiocyanato-bridged heterometallic coordination polymers to be used as heterogeneous catalysts

A series of thiocyanato-bridged heterometallic coordination polymers with a 3D reticular network have been synthesised by the reaction of [Pt^IV(SCN)₆]^2- with M^II ions to form {M^II[Pt^IV(SCN)₆]}_n and {[M^II(CH₃OH)₂][Pt^IV(SCN)₆]}_n (M^II = Mn^II, Fe^II, Co^II, Ni^II or Cu^II) in water and methanol, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed the absence of open metal sites in {M^II[Pt^IV(SCN)₆]}_ns and the formation of potential open metal sites at the M^II ions of {[M^II(CH₃OH)₂][Pt^IV(SCN)₆]}_ns by the coordination of methanol. One of the two coordinating methanol molecules in {[Co^II(CH₃OH)₂][Pt^IV(SCN)₆]}_n was replaced with pyridine to stabilise the open metal sites, because the methanol molecules are too labile to maintain open metal sites in water. The heterogeneous catalysis of coordination polymers with and without open metal sites was examined for organophosphate hydrolysis and photocatalytic water oxidation to clarify the requisites for heterogeneous catalysts.

Crystal structure of bis(4-benzoyl-pyridine-κN)bis(methanol-κO)bis(thio-cyanato-κN)nickel(II) methanol monosolvate

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Ni(NCS)2(C12H9NO)2(CH3OH)2]·CH3OH, comprises one NiII cation, two thio-cyanate anions, two 4-benzoyl-pyridine coligands, two coordinating, as well as one non-coordinating methanol mol-ecule. The NiII cation is coordinated by two terminally N-bonded thio-cyanate anions, the N atoms of two 4-benzoyl-pyridine coligands and the O atoms of two methanol ligands within a slightly distorted octa-hedron. Individual complexes are linked by inter-molecular O-H⋯S hydrogen bonding into chains parallel to [010] that are further connected into layers parallel to (10) by C-H⋯S hydrogen bonds. Additional C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network that limits channels extending parallel to [010] in which the non-coordinating methanol mol-ecules are located. They are hydrogen-bonded to the coordinating methanol mol-ecules. X-ray powder diffraction revealed that the compound could not be prepared as a pure phase.

Tetra-kis(4-benzoyl-pyridine-κN)bis-(iso-thio-cyanato-κN)manganese(II)

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Mn(NCS)2(C12H9NO)4], consists of one MnII cation located on a centre of inversion, one thio-cyanate anion and two 4-benzoyl-pyridine co-ligands. The MnII cation is octa-hedrally coordinated by two terminally N-bonded anionic ligands and four N-bonded 4-benzoyl-pyridine co-ligands within a slightly distorted octa-hedron. Individual complexes are linked by inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions into chains running along the c-axis direction. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry measurements reveal a decomposition in two separate steps, in each of which two co-ligands are removed. The compound obtained after the first step has the composition [Mn(NCS)2(C12H9NO)2] and is of unknown structure, before in the second step decomposition into [Mn(NCS)2] is observed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show the MnII cations to be in the high-spin state, and that weak anti-ferromagnetic inter-actions between the complexes are present.

Formation of di- and polynuclear Mn(II) thiocyanate pyrazole complexes in solution and in the solid state

Reaction of Mn(NCS)2 with pyrazole leads to the formation of three compounds with the compositions Mn(NCS)2(pyrazole)4 (1), [Mn(NCS)2]2(pyrazole)6 (2) and Mn(NCS)2(pyrazole)2 (3). Compound 1, already reported in the literature, consists of discrete complexes, in which the Mn(II) cations are octahedrally coordinated by four pyrazole ligands and two terminally N-bonded thiocyanate anions. In compound 2 each of the two Mn(II) cations are coordinated octahedrally by three pyrazole ligands and one terminal as well as two bridging thiocyanate anions, which link the metal cations into dimers. In compound 3 also octahedrally coordinated Mn(II) cations are present but they are linked into chains via centrosymmetric pairs of μ-1,3-bridging thiocyanate anions. Upon heating compound 1 loses the pyrazole co-ligands stepwise and is transformed into the chain compound 3 via the dimer 2 that is formed as an intermediate. Magnetic measurements on compounds 2 and 3 reveal dominating antiferromagnetic interactions, as already observed for 1D Mn(NCS)2 coordination compounds with pyridine based co-ligands.

Heterobimetallic Lantern Complexes and Their Novel Structural and Magnetic Properties

As the scale of microelectronic circuit devices approaches the atomic limit, the study of molecular-based wires and magnets has become more prevalent. Compounds with quasi-1D geometries have been investigated for their electronic conductivity and magnetic properties with potential use as nanoscale circuit components and information storage devices. To increase the number of compositionally tailored molecular systems available to study, we have taken a building-block, bottom-up approach to the development of improved electronic structure and magnetic properties of quasi-1D arrays. Over the past decade, a large family of asymmetric complexes that can assemble into extended arrays has resulted. Lantern (or paddle-wheel) complexes with conventional {O, O} donor carboxylates are legion, but by the use of monothiocarboxylate ligands and hard-soft Lewis acid-base principles, dozens of new lantern complexes of the form [PtM(SOCR)₄(L)] (M = Mg, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn; R = Ph (tba = thiobenzoate), CH₃ (SAc = thioacetate); L = neutral or anionic ligand) have been prepared. Depending on M and L, new intermolecular arrangements have resulted, and the magnetic properties have proven particularly interesting. In the solid state, the [PtM(SOCR)₄(L)] building blocks are sometimes isolated, sometimes form dimers, and can be induced to form infinite chains. The versatility of the lantern motif was demonstrated with a range of axial ligands to form both terminal and bridged complexes with various 3d metals and two different substituted thiocarboxylate backbone ligands. Within the dozens of crystallographically characterized compounds that make up this family of lanterns, several different structural motifs of solid-state dimerization were observed and divided into four distinct categories on the basis of their Pt···Pt and Pt···S distances and relative monomer orientations. Among all of these compounds, three novel magnetic phenomena were observed. Initially, long-range antiferromagnetic coupling between two metals more than 8 Å apart was observed in solid-state dimers formed via metallophilic Pt···Pt interactions and could induced by choice of the terminal L group. An infinite chain was prepared in [PtCr(tba)₄(NCS)]_∞ that displays ferromagnetic coupling between Cr centers with J/ k_B = 1.7(4) K. Homobimetallic quasi-1D chains of the form [Ni₂(SOCR)₄(L)]_∞ (R = Ph, CH₃; L = DABCO, pyz) were also prepared with S = 1 {Ni₂} building blocks in which the Ni centers have two different spin states with weak antiferromagnetic coupling along the chain, such that -0.18 > J/ k_B > -0.24 K. In the [Ni₂(tba)₄(quin)] derivative, a solid-state dimer forms with a bridging square conformation by interlantern Ni₂S₂ interactions and displays unusual S = 1 configurations on both Ni centers and weak antiferromagnetic coupling between them.

Crystal structure of octa-kis-(4-meth-oxy-pyridinium) bis-(4-meth-oxy-pyridine-κN)tetra-kis-(thio-cyanato-κN)ferrate(III) bis-[(4-meth-oxypyri-dine-κN)pentakis-(thio-cyanato-κN)ferrate(III)] hexa-kis-(thio-cyanato-κN)ferrate(III) with iron in three different octa-hedral coordination environments

The crystal structure of the title salt, (C6H8NO)8[Fe(NCS)4(C6H7NO)2][Fe(NCS)5(C6H7NO)]2[Fe(NCS)6], comprises three negatively charged octa-hedral FeIII complexes with different coordination environments in which the FeIII atoms are coordinated by a different number of thio-cyanate anions and 4-meth-oxy-pyridine ligands. Charge balance is achieved by 4-meth-oxy-pyridinium cations. The asymmetric unit consists of three FeIII cations, one of which is located on a centre of inversion, one on a twofold rotation axis and one in a general position, and ten thio-cyanate anions, two 4-meth-oxy-pyridine ligands and 4-meth-oxy-pyridinium cations (one of which is disordered over two sets of sites). Beside to Coulombic inter-actions between organic cations and the ferrate(III) anions, weak N-H⋯S hydrogen-bonding inter-actions involving the pyridinium N-H groups of the cations and the thio-cyanate S atoms of the complex anions are mainly responsible for the cohesion of the crystal structure.

Cd(II) and Zn(II) thiocyanate coordination compounds with 3-ethylpyridine: synthesis, crystal structures and properties

Reaction of Cd(NCS)2 and Zn(NCS)2 with 3-ethylpyridine leads to the formation of compounds of compositions M(NCS)2(3-ethylpyridine)4 (M=Cd, 1-Cd; Zn, 1-Zn) and M(NCS)2(3-ethylpyridine)2 (M=Cd, 2-Cd; Zn, 2-Zn). 1-Cd and 1-Zn are isotypic and form discrete complexes in which the metal cations are octahedrally coordinated by two trans-coordinating N-bonded thiocyanate anions and four 3-ethylpyridine co-ligands. In 2-Cd the cations are also octahedrally coordinated but linked into chains by pairs of μ-1,3-bridging anionic ligands. 2-Zn is built up of discrete complexes, in which the Zn cation is tetrahedrally coordinated by two N-bonded thiocyanate anions and two 3-ethylpyridine co-ligands. Compounds 1-Cd, 2-Cd and 2-Zn can be prepared in a pure state, whereas 1-Zn is unstable and transforms on storage into 2-Zn. If 1-Cd and 1-Zn are heated, a transformation into 2-Cd, respectively 2-Zn is observed. Luminescence measurements reveal that 1-Cd, 2-Cd and 2-Zn emit light in the blue spectral range with maxima at, respectively, 21724, 21654 and 22055 cm−1, assigned to ligand-based luminescence.

Selective coordination of cyanate and thiocyanate in the end-on mode: synthesis, structures and properties of [NiII2L(μ1,1-NCO)]+ and [NiII2L(μ1,1-NCS)]+ (L2− = macrocyclic N6S2 ligand)

The complex [Ni₂L]²⁺ exhibits a pre-organized binding pocket, whose walls direct the coordination of pseudohalide ions via repulsive CH⋯π interactions.

Isolation and characterization of a tetranuclear Pt-FeFe-Pt intermediate en route to the trinuclear Pt-Fe-Pt cluster

An intermediate compound, [{PtFe(piam)₂(NH₃)₂(OCH₃)}₂(μ-OCH₃)₂](ClO₄)₂ (1, piam = pivalamidate), in the synthetic process to form [Pt₂Fe(piam)₄(NH₃)₄](ClO₄)₃ (2) by mixing cis-[Pt(piam)₂(NH₃)₂]·2H₂O and iron sources was successfully isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In 1, the platinum and iron atoms are bridged by two piam ligands to afford a dinuclear Pt-Fe structure and are further linked to each other by methoxide bridges at the equatorial positions of iron atoms to form a tetranuclear Pt-FeFe-Pt complex. The Pt-Fe distances in 1 are 3.0010(16) and 2.9883(17) Å, which are significantly longer than those in 2 (2.5566(15) and 2.5718(15) Å). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that the oxidation states are Pt(+2)-Fe(+3)Fe(+3)-Pt(+2) (1) and Pt(+2)-Fe(+3)-Pt(+2) (2) with high-spin (S = 5/2) configurations in iron atoms. The magnetic susceptibility of 1 has a χT value of 5.83 cm³ mol^-1 K per Pt(+2)-Fe(+3)Fe(+3)-Pt(+2) unit at 300 K, which decreases down to 0.04 cm³ mol^-1 K at 7 K due to antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -28 cm^-1) of the two Fe(+3) centers. Compound 2 maintains its trinuclear structure in MeCN, exhibiting reversible one-electron reduction and oxidation, Pt(+2)-Fe(+2)-Pt(+2) ↔ Pt(+2)-Fe(+3)-Pt(+2), at E_1/2 = -0.19 V (vs. Fc/Fc⁺). However, in MeOH, compound 2 is decomposed into a dinuclear structure of Pt-Fe involving an equilibrium between 1 and 2.

Imposing high-symmetry and tuneable geometry on lanthanide centres with chelating Pt and Pd metalloligands

Tetragonal lanthanide complexes of Pd and Pt metalloligands with tuneable geometries demonstrate how the electronic structure of lanthanide centres can be engineered.

Exploitation of HSAB preferences allows for high-yield, one-pot syntheses of lanthanide complexes chelated by two Pd or Pt metalloligands, [M^II(SAc)₄]^2– (SAc^– = thioacetate, M = Pd, Pt). The resulting complexes with 8 oxygen donors surrounding the lanthanides can be isolated in crystallographically tetragonal environments as either [NEt₄]⁺ (space group: P4/mcc) or [PPh₄]⁺ (space group: P4/n) salts. In the case of M = Pt, the complete series of lanthanide complexes has been structurally characterized as the [NEt₄]⁺ salts (except for Ln = Pm), while the [PPh₄]⁺ salts have been structurally characterized for Ln = Gd–Er, Y. For M = Pd, selected lanthanide complexes have been structurally characterized as both salts. The only significant structural difference between salts of the two counter ions is the resulting twist angle connecting tetragonal prismatic and tetragonal anti-prismatic configurations, with the [PPh₄]⁺ salts approaching ideal D_4d symmetry very closely (φ = 44.52–44.61°) while the [NEt₄]⁺ salts exhibit intermediate twist angles in the interval φ = 17.28–27.41°, the twist increasing as the complete 4f series is traversed. Static magnetic properties for the latter half of the lanthanide series are found to agree well in the high temperature limit with the expected Curie behavior. Perpendicular and parallel mode EPR spectroscopy on randomly oriented powder samples and single crystals of the Gd complexes with respectively Pd- and Pt-based metalloligands demonstrate the nature of the platinum metal to strongly affect the spectra. Consistent parametrization of all of the EPR spectra reveals the main difference to stem from a large difference in the magnitude of the leading axial term, B02, this being almost four times larger for the Pt-based complexes as compared to the Pd analogues, indicating a direct Pt(5d_z²)–Ln interaction and an arguable coordination number of 10 rather than 8. The parametrization of the EPR spectra also confirms that off-diagonal operators are associated with non-zero parameters for the [NEt₄]⁺ salts, while only contributing minimally for the [PPh₄]⁺ salts in which lanthanide coordination approximates D_4d point group symmetry closely.

Quasi-1D chains of dinickel lantern complexes and their magnetic properties
