Systematics of BX3 and BX2+ Complexes (X = F, Cl, Br, I) with Neutral Diphosphine and Diarsine Ligands

Synthesis, Characterization, and Trapping of a Cyclic Diborylcarbene, an Electrophilic Carbene

A carbene bearing two geminal boryl substituents, called diborylcarbene (DBC), has been predicted to be highly Lewis acidic in sharp contrast to the well-studied persistent carbenes stabilized by π-donating substituents. Studies on DBC have been limited to either the base-trapping or theoretical calculations. Herein, we developed chemical equivalents for DBC, namely, K/X-diborylcarbenoids 2_X (X = F or Cl). Treatment of 2_F with Al(C₆F₅)₃ yielded [AlF(C₆F₅)₃]^--stabilized DBC 1-FAl, which showed a significant low-field shift of the carbenoid carbon from 169 ppm (doublet, coupling with ¹⁹F) to 242 ppm (singlet). The loss of halogen was also detected through electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis of 2_X only in the presence of Al(C₆F₅)₃. Generated DBC 1 from 1-FAl or 2_Cl was successfully trapped with excess amounts of trialkylphosphines (PR₃, R = Me or Et), which afforded the corresponding DBC-PR₃ adducts. In addition, the Lewis acidity of DBC 1 was evaluated both experimentally and theoretically to reveal that 1 is one of the most Lewis acidic species among neutral molecules.

Metal-Free Phosphorus-Directed Borylation of C(sp2 )-H Bonds

Spectacular progress has recently been achieved in transition metal-catalyzed C-H borylation of phosphines as well as directed electrophilic C-H borylation. As shown here, P-directed electrophilic borylation provides a new, straightforward, and efficient access to phosphine-boranes. It operates under metal-free conditions and leverages simple, readily available substrates. It is applicable to a broad range of backbones (naphthyl, biphenyl, N-phenylpyrrole, binaphthyl, benzyl, naphthylmethyl) and gives facile access to various substitution patterns at boron (by varying the boron electrophile or post-derivatizing the borane moiety). NMR monitoring supports the involvement of P-stabilized borenium cations as key intermediates. DFT calculations reveal the existence and stabilizing effect of π-arene/boron interactions in the (biphenyl)(i-Pr)₂ P→BBr₂ ⁺ species.

A Ni0 σ-Borane Complex Bearing a Rigid Bidentate Borane/Phosphine Ligand: Boryl Complex Formation by Oxidative Dehydrochloroborylation and Catalytic Activity for Ethylene Polymerization

While of interest, synthetically feasible access to boryl ligands and complexes remains limited, meaning such complexes remain underexploited in catalysis. For bidentate boryl ligands, oxidative addition of boranes to low-valent Ir^I or Pt⁰ are the only examples yet reported. As part of our interest in developing improved group 10 ethylene polymerization catalysts, we present here an optimized synthesis of a novel, rigid borane/phosphine ligand and its Ni⁰ σ-borane complex. From the latter, an unprecedented oxidative dehydrochloroborylation, to give a Ni^II boryl complex, was achieved. Furthermore, this new B/P ligand allowed the nickel-catalyzed polymerization of ethylene, which suggests that Ni⁰ σ-hydroborane complexes act as masked Ni^II boryl hydride reagents.

Diphosphino-Functionalized 1,8-Naphthyridines: a Multifaceted Ligand Platform for Boranes and Diboranes

A 1,8‐naphthyridine diphosphine (NDP) reacts with boron‐containing Lewis acids to generate complexes featuring a number of different naphthyridine bonding modes. When exposed to diborane B₂Br₄, NDP underwent self‐deprotonation to afford [NDP‐B₂Br₃]Br, an unsymmetrical diborane comprised of four fused rings. The reaction of two equivalents of monoborane BBr₃ and NDP in a non‐polar solvent provided the simple phosphine‐borane adduct [NDP(BBr₃)₂], which then underwent intramolecular halide abstraction to furnish the salt [NDP‐BBr₂][BBr₄], featuring a different coordination mode from that of [NDP‐B₂Br₃]Br. Direct deprotonation of NDP by KHMDS or PhCH₂K generates mono‐ and dipotassium reagents, respectively. The monopotassium reagent reacts with one or half an equivalent of B₂(NMe₂)₂Cl₂ to afford NDP‐based diboranes with three or four amino substituents.

The diverse reactivity of NOBF4 towards silylene, disilene, germylene and stannylene

The reactivity of NOBF₄ towards silylene, disilene, germylene, stannylenes has been described. Smooth syntheses of compounds of composition [PhC(NtBu)₂E(= O → BF₃)N(SiMe₃)₂, E = Si (3) and Ge (4)] were accomplished from the corresponding tetrylenes. An unusual heterocycle (10) featuring B, Sn, N, P, and O atoms was obtained from the reaction with a stannylene, while a 1,2-vicinal anti addition of fluoride was observed with a disilene (12).

Transient Imine as a Directing Group for the Metal-Free o-C-H Borylation of Benzaldehydes

Organoboron reagents are important synthetic intermediates and have wide applications in synthetic organic chemistry. The selective borylation strategies that are currently in use largely rely on the use of transition-metal catalysts. Hence, identifying much milder conditions for transition-metal-free borylation would be highly desirable. We herein present a unified strategy for the selective C-H borylation of electron-deficient benzaldehyde derivatives using a simple metal-free approach, utilizing an imine transient directing group. The strategy covers a wide spectrum of reactions and (i) even highly sterically hindered C-H bonds can be borylated smoothly, (ii) despite the presence of other potential directing groups, the reaction selectively occurs at the o-C-H bond of the benzaldehyde moiety, and (iii) natural products appended to benzaldehyde derivatives can also give the appropriate borylated products. Moreover, the efficacy of the protocol was confirmed by the fact that the reaction proceeds even in the presence of a series of external impurities.

Tertiary Phosphine and Arsine Complexes of Phosphorus Pentafluoride: Synthesis, Properties, and Electronic Structures

The reaction of PMe₃ or PPh₃ with PF₅ in anhydrous CH₂Cl₂ or hexane forms the white, moisture-sensitive complexes [PF₅(PR₃)] (R = Me, Ph). Similar reactions involving the diphosphines o-C₆H₄(PR₂)₂ afford the complexes [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PR₂)₂}][PF₆]. The X-ray structures of [PF₅(PR₃)] and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}][PF₆] show pseudo-octahedral fluorophosphorus centers. Multinuclear NMR spectra (¹H, ¹⁹F{¹H}, ³¹P{¹H}) show that in solution in CH₂Cl₂/CD₂Cl₂ the structures determined crystallographically are the only species present for [PF₅(PMe₃)] and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}][PF₆] but that [PF₅(PPh₃)] and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PPh₂)₂}][PF₆] exhibit reversible dissociation of the phosphine at ambient temperatures, although exchange slows at low temperatures. The complex ¹⁹F{¹H} and ³¹P{¹H} NMR spectra have been analyzed, including those of the cation [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}]⁺, which is a second-order AA'XX'B₂M spin system. The unstable [PF₅(AsMe₃)], which decomposes in a few hours at ambient temperatures, has also been isolated and spectroscopically characterized; neither AsPh₃ nor SbEt₃ forms similar complexes. The electronic structures of the PF₅ complexes have been explored by DFT calculations. The DFT optimized geometries for [PF₅(PMe₃)], [PF₅(PPh₃)], and [PF₄{o-C₆H₄(PMe₂)₂}]⁺ are in good agreement with their respective crystal structure geometries. DFT calculations on the PF₅-L complexes reveal the P-L bond strength falls with L in the order PMe₃ > PPh₃ > AsMe₃, consistent with the experimentally observed stabilities, and in the PF₅-L complexes, electron transfer from L to PF₅ on forming these complexes also follows the order PMe₃ > PPh₃ ≈ AsMe₃.

Ge=B π-Bonding: Synthesis and Reversible [2+2] Cycloaddition of Germaborenes

Phosphine-stabilized germaborenes featuring an unprecedented Ge=B double bond with short B⋅⋅⋅Ge contacts of 1.886(2) (4) and 1.895(3) Å (5) were synthesized starting from an intramolecular germylene-phosphine Lewis pair (1). After oxidative addition of boron trihalides BX3 (X=Cl, Br), the addition products were reduced with magnesium and catalytic amounts of anthracene to give the borylene derivatives in yields of 78 % (4) and 57 % (5). These halide-substituted germaborenes were characterized by single-crystal structure analysis, and the electronic structures were studied by quantum-chemical calculations. According to an NBO NRT analysis, the dominating Lewis structure contains a Ge=B double bond. The germaborenes undergo a reversible, photochemically initiated [2+2] cycloaddition with the phenyl moiety of a terphenyl substituent at room temperature, forming a complex heterocyclic structure with GeIV in a strongly distorted coordination environment.

PCl bond length depression upon coordination of a diazaphosphasiletidine to a group 13 element Lewis acid or a transition metal carbonyl fragment – Synthesis and structural characterization of diazaphosphasiletidine adducts with P-coordination

Three P-chloro-substituted diazaphosphasiletidines, Me2Si(NtBu)2PCl (1) and Me2Si(NtBu)2P(E)Cl (E=BCl3 (2); W(CO)5 (3)), are presented for comparison. 1 was first prepared more than 30 years ago and studied by means of spectroscopic methods, however, no crystal structure has been reported until now. In the presence of the comparatively weak Lewis acid BCl3 and the labile metal carbonyl complex [W(CO)5(THF)], 1 can be easily converted into its corresponding adducts 2 and 3. All products were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The structures of the new compounds 2 and 3 reveal a remarkable P–Cl bond contraction caused by the coordination of 1 to the Lewis acid or the Lewis acidic W(CO)5 fragment. Although the coordination number of the P atom is increased in 2 and 3, the P–Cl bond length is reduced dramatically, some kind of bond length paradoxon. A computational study suggests that these P–Cl bond shortenings result from a less effective donation of electron density from the lone pairs at the nitrogen atoms to the antibonding σ *(P–Cl) orbital in 2 and 3 as compared to 1.

Synthetic and structural studies of phosphine coordinated boronium salts

The reaction of BrH₂B·SMe₂ with primary and secondary phosphines affords a range of boronium salts of the form [H₂B(PR₃)₂]Br (PR₃ = PHCy₂1; PHPh₂, 2; PH₂Cy, 3), which have been fully characterised including solid-state determinations. Reactions of bulky tertiary phosphines, e.g., PCy₃ and PPh₃, with BrH₂B·SMe₂ do not proceed beyond the phosphine-stabilised bromoborane adducts, however, the smaller tertiary phosphine PMe₂Ph readily proceeds to form [H₂B(PMe₂Ph)₂]Br (4). The formation of the unsymmetrical boronium salts [H₂B(PH₂Cy)(PHCy₂)]Br (5) and [H₂B(PHCy₂)(PHPh₂)]Br (6) was observed by in situ NMR spectroscopy, however, the compounds were found to spontaneously disproportionate to their respective homophosphine boronium cations, even on prolonged storage in solution at -78 °C. Di- and triphosphines were found to form ring-closed boronium salts to afford [H₂B(κ²-P,P'-diphosphine)]Br (diphosphine = dppe, 7; dcpe, 8; dmpe, 9; dppf, 10; dppf with [AsF₆]^- counterion, 11; amphos, 12). The analogous methodology with Br₂HB·SMe₂ proved less generally applicable due to an accessible decomposition pathway being available to boronium salts bearing primary and secondary phosphines, leading to the formation of phosphonium salts, although [BrHB(dcpe)]Br (13), [BrHB(PMe₂Ph)₂]Br (14) and [BrHB(amphos)]Br (15) were synthesised with varying degrees of success. Reaction of BrH₂B·SMe₂ with diphars afforded the boronium salt [H₂B(κ²-P,P'-diphars)]Br (16), which featured two pendant arsine arms. Similarly, triphos was found to react with BrH₂B·SMe₂ to give [H₂B(κ²-P,P'-triphos)]Br (17), which featured a pendant phosphine arm. Substitution of the bromide counter anion with either hexafluoroarsenate or hexfluoroantimonate anions revealed weak hydrogen bonds between the P-H bonds of the boronium cations and the anions, that appeared through NMR studies to be retained in solution (where hydrogen bonding order was determined to be Br^- > [SbF₆]^-/[AsF₆]^-). This was further demonstrated by comparison of solid-state structures and solution NMR data of 1 with [H₂B(PHCy₂)₂][SbF₆] (18), 4 with [H₂B(PMe₂Ph)₂][AsF₆] (19) and 17 with [H₂B(triphos)][AsF₆] (20).
