Luminescence and Nonlinear Optical Properties in Copper(I) Halide Extended Networks

Liquid reagents are not enough for liquid assisted grinding in the synthesis of [(AgBr)(n-pica)]n

This study investigates the mechanochemical reactions between AgBr 3-picolylamine and 4-picolylamine. The use of different stoichiometry ratios of the reagents allows [(AgBr)(n-pica)]n and [(AgBr)2(n-pica)]n to be obtained, and we report the new structures of [(AgBr)2(3-pica)]n and [(AgBr)2(4-pica)]n which are characterized by the presence of the following: (a) infinite inorganic chains, (b) silver atom coordinated only by bromide atoms and (c) argentophilic interactions. Furthermore, we studied the interconversion of [(AgBr)(n-pica)]n/[(AgBr)2(n-pica)]n by mechanochemical and thermal properties. The in situ experiments suggest that [(AgBr)(3-pica)]n is kinetically favoured while [(AgBr)2(3-pica)]n is converted into [(AgBr)(3-pica)]n only with a high excess of the ligand. Finally, the liquid nature of the ligands is not sufficient to assist the grinding process, and the complete reaction is observed with the addition of a small quantity of acetonitrile.

2D Cu(I)-I Coordination Polymer with Smart Optoelectronic Properties and Photocatalytic Activity as a Versatile Multifunctional Material

This work presents two isostructural Cu(I)-I 2-fluoropyrazine (Fpyz) luminescent and semiconducting 2D coordination polymers (CPs). Hydrothermal synthesis allows the growth of P-1 space group single crystals, whereas solvent-free synthesis produces polycrystals. Via recrystallization in acetonitrile, P2₁ space group single crystals are obtained. Both show a reversible luminescent response to temperature and pressure. Structure determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 200 and 100 K allows us to understand their response as a function of temperature. Applying hydrostatic/uniaxial pressure or grinding also generates significant variations in their emission. The high structural flexibility of the Cu(I)-I chain is significantly linked to the corresponding alterations in structure. Remarkably, pressure can increase the conductivity by up to 3 orders of magnitude. Variations in resistivity are consistent with changes in the band gap energy. The experimental results are in agreement with the DFT calculations. These properties may allow the use of these CPs as optical pressure or temperature sensors. In addition, their behavior as a heterogeneous photocatalyst of persistent organic dyes has also been investigated.

Electron-Phonon Coupling Mediated Self-Trapped-Exciton Emission and Internal Quantum Confinement in Highly Luminescent Zero-Dimensional (Guanidinium)6Mn3X12 (X = Cl and Br)

We report a large Stokes shift and broad emission band in a Mn-based organic-inorganic hybrid halide, (guanidinium)₆Mn₃Br₁₂ [GuMBr], consisting of trimeric units of distorted MnBr₆ octahedra representing a zero-dimensional compound with a liquid like crystalline lattice. Analysis of the photoluminescence (PL) line width and Raman spectra reveals the effects of electron-phonon coupling, suggestive of the formation of Frenkel-like bound excitons. These bound excitons, regarded as the self-trapped excitons (STEs), account for the large Stokes shift and broad emission band. The excited-state dynamics was studied using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, which confirms the STE emission. Further, this compound is highly emissive with a PL quantum yield of ∼50%. With chloride ion incorporation, we observe enhancement of the emissive properties and attribute it to the effects of intrinsic quantum confinement. Localized electronic states in flat bands lining the gap and their strong coupling with phonons are confirmed with first-principles calculations.

Zero-Dimensional (Piperidinium)2MnBr4: Ring Puckering-Induced Isostructural Transition and Strong Electron-Phonon Coupling-Mediated Self-Trapped Exciton Emission

We report on the synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of a lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid halide, (Piperidinium)₂MnBr₄ (PipMBr). It crystallizes in a monoclinic P2₁/n structure, with isolated MnBr₄ tetrahedra representing a zero-dimensional compound. It undergoes a reversible isostructural transition at 422/417 K in the heating/cooling cycle owing to the hydrogen-bonding rearrangement mediated by ring puckering of piperidinium cations. This compound exhibits green emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 51%. Interestingly, strong electron-longitudinal optical phonon coupling with γ_LO of 237 meV is evidenced from the broadening of the temperature-dependent emission linewidth and the Raman spectrum. Such strong electron-phonon coupling and a relatively low Debye temperature (137 K) suggest the self-trapped exciton emission in this compound.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Noncentrosymmetric (Morpholinium)2Cd2Cl6 Single Crystals: Synthesis, Nonlinear Optical Properties, and Stability

To design nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, we focused on combinations of d¹⁰ metal cation (Cd²⁺)-based chloride and morpholine molecules to form organic-inorganic hybrids. The O of morpholine containing lone-pair electrons can be integrated with Cd²⁺ by a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) strategy to build acentric structures benefiting from the second-order Jahn-Teller effect. Introduction of the high-electronegativity chlorine can make polyhedrons of acentric crystals more distorted and conducive to a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response. Therefore, (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ crystals were constructed and synthesized by a solvent evaporation method. (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ belongs to the orthorhombic P2₁2₁2₁ space group and shows a one-dimensional (1D) structure with distorted [CdCl₆] and [CdCl₄O₂] octahedrons. The short cutoff edge of (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ was determined to be about 230 nm. The SHG response of (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ exhibited an intensity of approximately 0.73 × KDP as estimated by the powder second harmonic generation technique. Furthermore, related theoretical calculations were performed to study the relationship of the band structure, refractive anisotropy, electronic state, and nonlinear optical response. Besides, (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ showed relatively good thermal stability. This work can serve as a guide for the design and synthesis of new large NLO hybrid crystals with d¹⁰ transition metals.

Modulated luminescence of zero-dimensional bimetallic all-inorganic halide clusters

A series of new zero-dimensional bimetallic all-inorganic halide clusters were reported, and the luminescence of the clusters was regulated by both the B(i) connecting ions and B(iii) ions in the octahedral centers.

Multi-stimulus semiconductor Cu(i)–I-pyrimidine coordination polymer with thermo- and mechanochromic sensing

The 1D-[Cu(aClpym)I]n coordination polymer behaves as an intelligent material with response to different stimuli since its emission is altered with temperature and with varying modes of pressure, making it a potential multi-response material.

Assembly of Heterometallic AuICu2I2 Cores on the Scaffold of NPPN-Bridging Cyclic Bisphosphine

The row of metallocyclic dinuclear gold(I) complexes with cyclic diphosphines, namely, P-pyridylethyl-substituted 1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctanes, has been obtained. Further interaction of the dinuclear gold(I) complexes with copper(I) iodide gave the first examples of hexanuclear Au^I/Cu^I complexes containing two unusual trinuclear AuICu₂I₂ fragments. The structures of di- and hexanuclear complexes were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All of the obtained complexes are moderate emitters in the solid state. Dinuclear gold(I) complexes displayed a greenish emission with the maxima in the emission spectra at ca. 550 nm. The obtained hexanuclear heterobimetallic Au^I/Cu^I complexes are triplet solid-state blue emitters with the maximum in the emission spectra at 463 and 484 nm. According to the TD-DFT calculations, the observed emission of all studied complexes had a triplet origin and was caused by the ³CC or ³(MLCT) T₁ → S₀ transitions for dinuclear and hexanuclear complexes, respectively.

Cu(I)-I-2,4-diaminopyrimidine Coordination Polymers with Optoelectronic Properties as a Proof of Concept for Solar Cells

Two coordination polymers with formulas [CuI(dapym)]_n and [Cu₂I₂(dapym)]_n (dapym = 2,4-diaminopyrimidine) have been synthesized in water at room temperature. According to the stoichiometry used, mono (1D) and the two-dimensional (2D) structures can be obtained. Both are made up of Cu₂I₂ double chains. Their high insolubility in the reaction medium also makes it possible to obtain them on a nanometric scale. Their structural flexibility and short Cu-Cu distances provoke interesting optoelectronic properties and respond to physical stimuli such as pressure and temperature, making them interesting for sensor applications. The experimental and theoretical studies allow us to propose different emission mechanisms with different behaviors despite containing the same organic ligand. These behaviors are attributed to their structural differences. The emission spectra versus pressure and temperature suggest competencies between different transitions, founding critical Cu₂I₂ environments, i.e., symmetric in the 1D compound and asymmetric for the 2D one. The intensity in the 2D compound's emission increases with decreasing temperature, and this behavior can be rationalized with a structural constriction that decreases the Cu-Cu and Cu-I distances. However, compound 1D exhibits a contrary behavior that may be related to a change of the organic ligand's molecular configuration. These changes imply that a more significant Π-Π interaction counteracts the contraction in distances and angles when the temperature decreased. Also, the experimental conductivity measurements and theoretical calculations show a semiconductor behavior. The absorption of the 1D compound in UV, its intense emission at room temperature, and the reduction to nanometric size have allowed us to combine it homogeneously with ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA), creating a new composite material. The external quantum efficiency of this material in a Si photovoltaic mini-module has shown that this compound is an active species with application in solar cells since it can move the photons of the incident radiation (UV region) to longer wavelengths.

Tunable Luminescence in Hybrid Cu(I) and Ag(I) Iodides

Hybrid materials are increasingly demonstrating their utility across several optical, electrical, and magnetic applications. Cu(I) halide-based hybrids have attracted attention due to their strong luminescence in the absence of rare-earths. Here, we report three Cu(I) and Ag(I) hybrid iodides with 1,5-naphthyridine and additional triphenylphosphine (Ph₃P) ligands. The compounds are built on (Cu/Ag)-I staircase chains or on a rhomboid Cu₂I₂ dimer and display intense and tunable luminescence. Replacing Cu with Ag, and adding the second kind of organic ligand (Ph₃P) tunes the emission color from red to yellow and results in significantly enhanced quantum yield. Density functional theory-based electronic structure calculations reveal the separate effects of the inorganic module and organic ligand on the electronic structure, confirming that bandgap, optical absorption, and emission properties of these phosphors can be systemically and deliberately tuned by metal substitution and organic ligands cooperation. The emerging understanding of composition-structure-property relations in this family provides powerful design tools toward new compounds for general lighting applications.

Dicopper(I) Paddle-Wheel Complexes with Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Adjusted by Ancillary Ligands

A suite of paddle-wheel shaped [Cu₂(PymPPh₂)₃(L_an)_n](PF₆)₂ complexes showing efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been synthesized. In these complexes, Cu(I) ions are P,N-bridged by three diphenyl(2-pyrimidyl)phosphine (PymPPh₂, L) ligands in a "head-to-tail" fashion, and one or both metals are also capped by the ancillary ligand (L_an = MeOH, Me₂CO, MeCN, PhCN). At ambient temperature, the solid complexes emit TADF with the quantum yield of up to 85% and the lifetimes of from 9.6 to 27 μs. The ancillary ligands, whose orbitals negligibly contribute to the radiative ¹(M + L + L_an)LCT state, remarkably adjust emission energies and ΔE(S₁-T₁) energy splitting magnitudes of the emitters obtained. Thus, depending on structure and/or number of the L_an molecules, the emission maxima vary from 500 to 563 nm, and the ΔE(S₁-T₁) gaps range 550-1100 cm^-1. Such tunable TADF characteristics coupled with the excellent solubility and air-stability make the complexes presented to be promising TADF materials.

Copper(i)-polymers and their photoluminescence thermochromism properties

Under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions, four organic bidentate bridging N,N'-donor ligands 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)propane (L1), 4,4'-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,1'-biphenyl (L2), 1,2-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L3) and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoxaline (L4) were employed to react with CuBr/CuI, generating four 2-D layered copper(i)-polymer coordination polymer materials [Cu2Br2(L1)] 1, [CuI(L2)] 2, [CuI(L3)] 3 and [CuI(L4)0.5] 4. In 1-4, different Cu-X motifs are found: a cubic Cu4Br4 core in 1; a castellated Cu-I single chain in 2; a rhombic Cu2I2 core in 3; and a staircase-like Cu-I double chain in 4. The 2-D layer networks of 1-3 can all be simplified into a simple 44 topology (planar for 1 and 3; wave-like for 2), while the 2-D layer network of 4 has a 63 topology. The photoluminescence behaviors of 1-4 under a UV lamp suggest that 1 and 2 possess fluorescence thermochromism properties. Under the UV lamp, with the decrease in temperature, (i) 1 exhibits a yellow-to-red emission; (ii) 2 exhibits a yellow-to-green emission; (iii) 3 always emits green light; and (iv) 4 never emits light. These are further confirmed by their emission spectra. From 297 K to 77 K, the emission of 1 exhibits a large red shift from 561 nm to 623 nm; the emission of 2 exhibits a large blue shift from 571 nm to 515 nm; only a minor red shift is observed for the emission of 3; and no peaks appear in the emission spectra of 4. The crystal data of 1 and 2 at different temperatures have been collected for revealing the origination of their fluorescence thermochromism properties. Based on the above investigations, the effect of the rigidity/flexibility of the organic ligand on the fluorescence thermochromism properties of copper(i)-polymer coordination polymer materials is discussed. The quantum yields at 297 K and the photoluminescence lifetimes at 297 K and 77 K for 1-3 were also measured for better understanding their photoluminescence properties.

Smart composite films of nanometric thickness based on copper-iodine coordination polymers. Toward sensors

One-pot reactions between CuI and methyl or methyl 2-amino-isonicotinate give rise to the formation of two coordination polymers (CPs) based on double zig-zag Cu2I2 chains. The presence of a NH2 group in the isonicotinate ligand produces different supramolecular interactions affecting the Cu-Cu distances and symmetry of the Cu2I2 chains. These structural variations significantly modulate their physical properties. Thus, both CPs are semiconductors and also show reversible thermo/mechanoluminescence. X-ray diffraction studies carried out under different temperature and pressure conditions in combination with theoretical calculations have been used to rationalize the multi-stimuli-responsive properties. Importantly, a bottom-up procedure based on fast precipitation leads to nanofibers of both CPs. The dimensions of these nanofibres enable the preparation of thermo/mechanochromic film composites with polyvinylidene difluoride. These films are tens of nanometers in thickness while being centimeters in length, representing smaller thicknesses so far reported for thin-film composites. This nanomaterial integration of CPs could represent a source of alternative nanomaterials for opto-electronic device fabrication.

Supramolecular Interactions Modulating Electrical Conductivity and Nanoprocessing of Copper-Iodine Double-Chain Coordination Polymers

Two coordination polymers (CPs), based on Cu(I)-I double zig-zag chains bearing isonicotinic acid or 3-chloroisonicotinic acid as terminal ligands with molecular recognition capabilities, have been synthesized and fully characterized. Both compounds present extended networks with supramolecular interactions directed by the formation of H-bonds between the complementary carboxylic groups, giving supramolecular sheets. The chloro substituent allows establishing additional Cl···Cl supramolecular interactions that reinforce the stability of the supramolecular sheets. These CPs are semiconductor materials; however, the presence of chlorine produces slight changes in the I-Cu-I chains, generating a worse overlap in the Cu-I orbitals, thus determining a decrease in its electrical conductivity value. These experimental results have also been corroborated by theoretical calculations using the study of the morphology of the density of states and 3D orbital isodensities, which determine that conductivity is mostly produced through the Cu-I skeleton and is less efficient in the case of the chloro derivative compound. A fast and efficient bottom-up approach based on the self-assembly of the initial building blocks and the low solutibility of these CPs has proved very useful for the production of nanostructures.

Anion-dependent self-assembly of copper coordination polymers based on pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylate and 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene

By utilizing a pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (H₃pzdc) and flexible 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (dpe) with various copper(ii) salts under the same solvothermal synthetic conditions, six novel coordination polymers, namely, {[Cu₂(pzdc)(dpe)₂]X}_n (X = NO₃^- (1), ClO₄^- (2), BF₄^- (3), SCN^- (4)), {[Cu(ii)₄Cu(i)₄(pzdc)₄(dpe)₆](H₂O)₄}_2n (5), and {[Cu₅(HPO₄)₂ (pzdc)₂(dpe)₃](H₂O)₅}_n (6) were obtained. The structural diversity of compounds 1-6 depends on the starting Cu(ii) salts. Compounds 1-4 are isostructural and exhibit a 3D porous cationic pillar-layered coordination framework with lattice monoanions incorporated into the channels of the framework. When using copper(ii) sulfate as a reagent, a neutral mixed-valence Cu(i,ii) 2D + 2D → 2D parallel interpenetrated layer of 5 was obtained. In the case of a phosphate trianion, compound 6 shows a 3D coordination framework which contains μ₄-HPO₄^2- linking between Cu(ii) centers. The anion-exchange properties of 1-4 were studied. Interestingly, compounds 1-4 exhibit the irreversible chemisorption of the thiocyanate anion instead of anion exchange without the destruction of their structural framework as confirmed by PXRD, IR, UV-Vis, and AA spectroscopy. Moreover, the anion-induced structural transformation of 1-4 was observed when exchanging with an azide anion. The luminescent properties of 1-6 and exchanged products were also investigated.

Partial in Situ Reduction of Copper(II) Resulting in One-Pot Formation of 2D Neutral and 3D Cationic Copper(I) Iodide-Pyrazine Coordination Polymers: Structure and Emissive Properties

On the way to copper(I) iodide coordination polymers with specific luminescent properties, the in situ reduction of Cu(II) in the presence of KI and bidentate N-heteroatomic ligand, either pyrazine (pyz) or 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), resulted in one two-dimensional and two three-dimensional new coordination networks. Starting from Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O in the presence of pyz, successive precipitation of known yellow [(Cu^II)₂(pyz)]_n, new orange [Cu^II(pyz)]_n, and new dark blue {[Cu^I(pyz)₂]·I₅}_n polymeric solids was observed. Starting from the same salt in the presence of bpy resulted in the successive precipitation of known yellow [(Cu^II)₂(bpy)]_n and new brown {[Cu^II(NO₃)(bpy)₂]·I₃·(dmf·H₂O)}_n coordination polymers. By using either Cu(CH₃COO)₂·H₂O or Cu(BF₄)₂ as starting materials, both known forms, yellow [(Cu^II)₂(bpy)]_n and orange [Cu^II(bpy)]_n, precipitated successively. The new solids were characterized by IR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis. [Cu^II(pyz)]_n represents the missing member in the row of two-dimensional coordination networks with general formula [Cu^IX(pyz)]_n (X = Cl, Br, I). Its steady state and time-resolved characterization together with DFT and TDDFT calculations revealed that the emission at room temperature is mainly delayed fluorescence originating from mixed singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer and halide-to-ligand charge transfer states, while that at 77 K is phosphorescence, associated with the small singlet-triplet energy differences (ΔE = 70 meV).

Thermochromic Luminescent Materials and Multi-Emission Bands in d10 Clusters

Thermochromic luminescent compounds with d¹⁰ metal ions are interesting materials for applications such as sensors or display devices. However, these properties are difficult to predict prior to their synthesis. In this communication, we investigated materials with structural assemblies known to be responsible of distinct luminescence mechanisms and show that they can be interesting potential thermometers. Thus, we compared the synthesis of a zinc halide and a copper halide based compounds which only differ in their ability to create clusters with metallophilic interactions. The compounds synthesized by hydrothermal method have been structurally characterized by Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Solid-State NMR, FTIR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, thermal analysis and EPR. The photoluminescence properties of the two materials have been characterized at different temperatures. The copper bromide compound shows luminescence thermochromism in a wide spectrum of colors owing to the formation of clusters generating multi-emission bands while the zinc bromide exhibits a single emission band and no thermochromism.

Phosphorescent 2-, 3- and 4-coordinate cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) Cu(i) complexes

2-, 3- and 4-coordinate CAAC–Cu(i) complexes were prepared and all were found to display phosphorescent emission with microsecond lifetimes.
