Water-Soluble and Highly Luminescent Europium(III) Complexes with Favorable Photostability and Sensitive pH Response Behavior

Stable Europium-based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Naked-eye Ultrasensitive Detecting Fluoroquinolones Antibiotics

Fluoroquinolone antibiotic (FQ) residues, such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ofloxacin (OFLX), have aroused public concerns owing to their serious impact in environmental water or food fields which influence human health. A facile and high-performance sensory method for detecting FQs is highly desirable for practical requirements. Herein, we have presented a luminescent Eu-MOF with unique 2D (4-c) {4⁴.6²}-connected topology, which holds the outstanding fluorescent property and excellent chemical stability in aqueous solution for 15 days. Thus, Eu-MOF can be considered as a highly sensitive chemo-sensor for sensing CIP and OFLX with different fluorescent color conversion (red changes to green for OFLX and to blue for CIP) and a low detection limit of 0.693 and 0.802 ppb, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism of sensing CIP and OFLX was exposed to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and dynamic quenching process, as evaluated by DFT calculations and fluorescence lifetime decay measurements. Our work first reports a simple and efficient strategy for recognizing CIP and OFLX with a special luminescence color-change phenomenon based on MOF materials, serving as a meaningful guide for researchers in beneficial applications.

New 1,3-Disubstituted Benzo[h]Isoquinoline Cyclen-Based Ligand Platform: Synthesis, Eu3+ Multiphoton Sensitization and Imaging Applications

The development of lanthanide-based luminescent probes with a long emission lifetime has the potential to revolutionize imaging-based diagnostic techniques. By a rational design strategy taking advantage of computational predictions, a novel, water-soluble Eu³⁺ complex from a cyclen-based ligand bearing 1,3-disubstituted benzo[h]isoquinoline arms was realized. The ligand has been obtained overcoming the lack of reactivity of position 3 of the isoquinoline moiety. Notably, steric hindrance of the heteroaromatic chromophore allowed selective and stoichiometry-controlled insertion of two or three antennas on the cyclen platform without any protection strategy. The complex bears a fourth heptanoic arm for easy conjugation to biomolecules. This new chromophore allowed the sensitization of the metal center either with one or two photons excitation. The suitability as a luminescent bioprobe was validated by imaging BMI1 oncomarker in lung carcinoma cells following an established immunofluorescence approach. The use of a conventional epifluorescence microscope equipped with a linear structured illumination module disclosed a simple and inexpensive way to image confocally Ln-bioprobes by single photon excitation in the 350–400 nm window, where ordinary confocal systems have no excitation sources.

Synthetic Strategies, Reactivity and Applications of 1,5-Naphthyridines

This review covers the synthesis and reactivity of 1,5-naphthyridine derivatives published in the last 18 years. These heterocycles present a significant importance in the field of medicinal chemistry because many of them exhibit a great variety of biological activities. First, the published strategies related to the synthesis of 1,5-naphthyridines are presented followed by the reactivity of these compounds with electrophilic or nucleophilic reagents, in oxidations, reductions, cross-coupling reactions, modification of side chains or formation of metal complexes. Finally, some properties and applications of these heterocycles studied during this period are examined.

Full-Range Ratiometric Detection of D2O in H2O by a Heterobimetallic Uranyl/Lanthanide Framework with 4f/5f Bimodal Emission

A uranyl-europium heterobimetallic compound, (TEA)₃[(UO₂)₆Eu(H₂O)₄(PPA)₆] (H₃PPA = phosphonoacetic acid, TEA = tetraethylammonium cation), was synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions. The emission spectrum contains characteristic electronic transition features of both Eu³⁺ and UO₂²⁺, while the peak intensity of Eu³⁺ is notably higher than that of UO₂²⁺. This is primarily attributed to the energy transfer from uranyl to europium in the structure. Significantly, a positive correlation between the Eu³⁺ peak intensity at 621 nm and the D₂O content can be established in the aqueous system, while the uranyl peak intensity is almost unchanged, allowing for the full-range ratiometric detection of D₂O in H₂O.

Tripyridinophane Platform Containing Three Acetate Pendant Arms: An Attractive Structural Entry for the Development of Neutral Eu(III) and Tb(III) Complexes in Aqueous Solution

We report a detailed characterization of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ complexes derived from a tripyridinophane macrocycle bearing three acetate side arms (H₃tpptac). Tpptac^3- displays an overall basicity (∑ log K_i^H) of 24.5, provides the formation of mononuclear ML species, and shows a good binding affinity for Ln³⁺ (log K_LnL = 17.5-18.7). These complexes are also thermodynamically stable at physiological pH (pEu = 18.6, pTb = 18.0). It should be noted that the pGd value of Gd-tpptac (18.4) is only slightly lower than that of commercially available MRI contrast agents such as Gd-dota (pGd = 19.2). Moreover, a very good selectivity for these ions over the endogenous cations (log K_CuL = 14.4, log K_ZnL = 12.9, and log K_CaL = 9.3) is observed. The X-ray structure of the terbium complex shows the metal coordinated by the nine N₆O₃ donor set of the ligand and one inner-sphere water molecule. DFT calculations result in two Eu-tpptac structures with similar bond energies (ΔE = 0.145 eV): one structure in which the water is coordinated to the metal ion and one structure in which the water molecule is farther away from the ion, bound to the ligand with an OH-π bond. By detailed luminescence experiments, we demonstrate that the europium complex in aqueous solution presents a hydration equilibrium between nine-coordinate, dehydrated [Eu-tpptac]⁰ and ten-coordinate, monohydrated [Eu-tpptac(H₂O)]⁰ species. A similar trend is observed for the terbium complex. Despite the presence of this hydration equilibrium, the H₃tpptac ligand sensitizes Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ luminescence efficiently in buffered water at physiological pH. Particularly, the terbium complex displays a long excited-state lifetime of 2.24 ms and an overall quantum yield of 33% with a brightness of 3600 M^-1 cm^-1. Such features of Ln³⁺ complexes of H₃tpptac indicate that this platform appears to be particularly appealing for the further development of luminescent lanthanide labels.

Coumarin Derivative Directly Coordinated to Lanthanides Acts as an Excellent Antenna for UV-Vis and Near-IR Emission

A chelating coumarin-derived ligand sensitizes all emitting lanthanide ions in the solid state and gives high absolute quantum yields for ethanol solutions of complexes of Sm, Eu, Tb, and Dy, above 20% for the last two. Crystal structures of these four complexes are [Ln(Cum)₃(H₂O)(X)]·X where X = MeOH or EtOH.

UV and Temperature-Sensing Based on NaGdF4:Yb3+:Er3+@SiO2-Eu(tta)3

A multifunctional nanosystem was synthesized to be used as a dual sensor of UV light and temperature. NaGdF4:Yb3+:Er3+ upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) were synthesized and coated with a silica shell to which a europium(III) complex was incorporated. The synthesis of NaGdF4 UCNPs was performed via thermal decomposition of lanthanide ion fluoride precursors in the presence of oleic acid. To achieve sufficient water dispersibility, the surface of the hydrophobic oleate-capped UCNPs in the hexagonal phase was modified by a silica coating through a modified Stöber process through a reverse microemulsion method. An Eu(tta)3 (tta: thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) complex was prepared in situ at the silica shell. A dual-mode nanothermometer was obtained from a near infrared to visible upconversion fluorescence signal of Er3+ ions together with UV-excited downshifting emission from the Eu3+ complex. Measurements were recorded near the physiological temperature range (293-323 K), revealing excellent linearity (R 2 > 0.99) and relatively high thermal sensitivities (≥1.5%·K-1). The Eu(tta)3 complex present in the silica shell was tested as the UV sensor because of the Eu3+ luminescence dependence on UV-light exposure time.

Water-soluble lanthanide complexes with a helical ligand modified for strong luminescence in a wide pH region

Luminescent helical lanthanide complexes with hydrophilicity were examined for stability and reversibility in a pH region between 1.9 and 11.9.
