Abstract
Utilizing a nitronyl nitroxide biradical NITPhPybis [5-(4-pyridyl)-1,3-bis(1'-oxyl-3'-oxido-4',4',5',5'-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-benzene], a new family of isomorphic 2p-3d-4f chains {[LnCu(hfac)5(NITPhPybis)]·CHCl3}n (hfac: hexafluoroacetylacetonate; LnIII: Gd 1; Dy 2; Ho 3; Tb 4) have been successfully produced. In complexes 1-4, the NITPhPybis biradical chelates one LnIII ion through its bis(NIT) moiety while the N donor of pyridine and another uncoordinated NO group of the biradical, respectively, bind one CuII ion, yielding a biradical-Ln-Cu 1D zigzag chain with a unique [Ln-bis(NIT)-Cu-bis(NIT)-Ln] structural motif. DC magnetic studies reveal that ferromagnetic exchanges dominate in these Cu-Ln-biradical chains, originating from the ferromagnetic Ln-NO and NOaxial-Cu exchanges. Non-zero χ'' signals were observed for Dy/Tb-Cu derivatives implying slow magnetic relaxation behavior. The obtained effective energy barrier is Ueff = 18.0 K and τ0 = 2.0 × 10-8 s for the DyCu derivative.

Abstract
Employing the new nitronyl nitroxide biradical ligand biNIT-3Py-5-Ph (2-(5-phenyl-3-pyridyl)-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide)), a 16-spin Cu-radical complex, [Cu8(biNIT-3Py-5-Ph)4(hfac)16] 1, and three 2p-3d-4f chain complexes, {[Ln(hfac)3][Cu(hfac)2]2(biNIT-3Py-5-Ph)2}n (LnⅢ= Gd 2, Tb 3, Dy 4; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate), have been prepared and characterized. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed in all derivatives a common cyclic [Cu-biNIT]2 secondary building unit in which two bi-NIT-3Py-5-Ph biradical ligands and two CuII ions are associated via the pyridine N atoms and NO units. For complex 1, two such units assemble with four additional CuII ions to form a discrete complex involving 16 S = 1/2 spin centers. For complexes 2–4, the [Cu-biNIT]2 units are linked by LnIII ions via NO groups in a 1D coordination polymer. Magnetic studies show that the coordination of the aminoxyl groups with Cu or Ln ions results in behaviors combining ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. No slow magnetic relaxation behavior was observed for Tb and Dy derivatives.

Abstract
1,5-Dimethyl-3-(3'-(hydroxymethyl)-2'-pyridine)-6-oxotetrazane (H3vdpyCH2OH) or its oxidized verdazyl form (vdpyCH2OH) reacted with transition metal and/or lanthanide acetates to yield [(vdpyCH2O)2Co2Ln2(acO)8] (Ln = Y(III): ICo,Y; Gd(III): ICo,Gd), [(vdpyCH2O)2M3(acO)4] (M = Zn(II): IIZn; Co(II): IICo) and [(vdpyCH2OH)Zn(acO)2] (IIIZn) through self-assembly implying a complex-as-ligand intermediate. Single-crystal diffraction reveals that IMT,Ln are composed of 2p-3d-4f centrosymmetric clusters with verdazyl radicals at the two ends coordinated to the transition-metal ion in a tridentate mode and to the {Ln2(acO)4} lanthanide central core in a monodentate mode through its alkoxo moiety. In ICo,Gd, the transition-metal ions adopt an irregular octahedral environment, and the {Ln2(acO)4} core adopts a paddlewheel motif, whereas in ICo,Y, the transition metal is pentacoordinated, and the central core contains only two acetate bridges. Going from ICo,Y to IICo, the central {Y2(acO)4} core is replaced by an axially compressed octahedral cobalt(II) center, whereas the outer parts of the molecule remain still. The dc magnetic studies revealed that the alternate π-stacking of the verdazyl radicals in IIZn led to the formation of alternate antiferromagnetically coupled 1D chains with Jvd-vd = -8.2(1) cm-1 and Jvd-vd' = -7.6(1) cm-1 (-2J convention). In ICo,Y, a complex fitting procedure allowed us to retrieve a complete set of magnetic parameters to take into account both the magnetic anisotropy of the cobalt(II) centers and intra- and inter-molecular exchange effects. For ICo,Y, it led to gCo = 2.13(4), DCo = 100(2) cm-1, ECo = 19.9(5) cm-1, JCo-vd = +26.5(4) cm-1, and Jvd-vd = -7.95(4) cm-1. ac magnetic susceptibility of ICo,Y, ICo,Gd and IICo did not reveal any slow relaxation of the magnetization even when a dc external magnetic field up to 2000 Oe was applied.

Abstract
A cubane-like complex dianion [Tb4(OH)4(tfa)6(hfac)4]2− was synthesized, accompanied by two counter cations of [Ni(hfac)(2pyIN)2]+, where Htfa, Hhfac, and 2pyIN stand for trifluoroacetic acid, 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione, and 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-pyridylimidazolin-1-oxyl, respectively. In the complex anion, each Tb ion was capped with hfac, and each Tb···Tb diagonal was bridged with tfa, thus forming an approximate Td symmetry, though the whole molecular formula was crystallographically independent in an orthorhombic Pbca space group. The ionic charge was −2 in total. The magnetic study revealed that the complex ions were magnetically isolated from each other. Practically no 4f–4f superexchange interaction was operative, while the 2p–3d ferromagnetic coupling seemed to be appreciable, as anticipated from the proposed magnetostructural relationship.

Abstract
The search for molecule-based magnetic materials has stimulated over the years the development of extremely rich coordination chemistry. Various combinations of spin carriers have been investigated and illustrated by a plethora of hetero-spin complexes: 3d-nd, 3d-4f, 2p-3d, and 2p-4f. More recently, two other classes of hetero-spin complexes have grown rapidly: compounds containing three different paramagnetic metal ions, or one radical and two different paramagnetic metal ions (all within the same molecular entity). Such new classes of systems represent a challenge both from a synthetic and theoretical point of view. Indeed, the synthetic control and the understanding of the spin topology effect on the overall magnetic behavior from first-principles is a difficult problem to be solved. The presence of different spin carriers in a single molecule makes such compounds particularly interesting because they offer the possibility of developing new magnetic properties, different from those of hetero-bi-spin or homo-spin systems. A critical overview taking the case of 2p-3d-4f complexes is the focus of this perspective paper. An original organic picture of the state-of-art in this field and new hints about the main directions that should be pursued to achieve hetero-tri-spin systems with large anisotropy barriers, low quantum tunneling of magnetization and, possibly, large blocking temperatures are provided in this article through an analysis based on numerically revisiting already published data and a critical survey of the literature reported so far. The reasons for the limited success obtained for the largely used 3d-2p-4f topology are given along with the ones explaining the failure for the 2p-4f-3d case. The still never synthesized linear 2p-3d-4f spin topology seemed to be the most promising one based on the results obtained for the unique closed hetero-tri-spin closed triangular system synthesized so far.

Abstract
Self-assembling the novel nitronyl nitroxide radical NIT-3Py-5-Ph (2-(5-phenyl-3-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) with Ln(hfac)3·2H2O and Cu(hfac)2 (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) resulted in two heterometallic complexes with formula [LnCu(hfac)5(NIT-3Py-5-Ph)2] (Ln = Gd 1, Dy 2), in which two NIT-3Py-5-Ph radicals are coordinated with the LnIII ion via their nitroxide units in the cis-arrangement manner and the CuII ion is ligated by the pyridyl N donors of the radicals. Interestingly, when the phenyl group of NIT-3Py-5-Ph was replaced with a p-pyridyl group, a new family of 2D networks, namely, {[Ln(hfac)3][Cu(hfac)2]2(NIT-3Py-5-4Py)2}n (Ln = Gd 3, Tb 4, Dy 5; NIT-3Py-5-4Py = 2-(5-(4-pyridyl)-3-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) was obtained. In the 2D sheet, each NIT-3Py-5-4Py ligand serves as a μ3-bridge to bind one LnIII center by the aminoxyl moiety and two CuII ions through two pyridine groups to form a 2D structure. The LnIII ion is coordinated by two NO units of two radicals in a trans configuration. DC magnetic measurements indicate that ferromagnetic LnIII-NO exchange occurs in 1-5. AC studies reveal that 2 displays slow relaxation of the magnetization while no such magnetic relaxation is found in complex 5. The observed different magnetic relaxation behaviors of two Dy analogues could be attributed to the different coordination modes of NO groups of the radicals, and the coordination geometry of the Dy center is from C2v in 2 to D2d in 5.

Abstract
Although 1,2,4,5-tetrazines or s-tetrazines have been known in the literature for more than a century, their coordination chemistry has become increasingly popular in recent years due to their unique redox activity, multiple binding sites and their various applications. The electron-poor character of the ring and stabilization of the radical anion through all four nitrogen atoms in their metal complexes provide new aspects in molecular magnetism towards the synthesis of new high performing Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs). The scope of this review is to examine the role of s-tetrazine radical ligands in transition metal and lanthanide based SMMs and provide a critical overview of the progress thus far in this field. As well, general synthetic routes and new insights for the preparation of s-tetrazines are discussed, along with their redox activity and applications in various fields. Concluding remarks along with the limitations and perspectives of these ligands are discussed.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a new terthiophene bearing stable radical II is described. Through a cross coupling reaction between 2-tributylstannylthiophene and 6-(2,5-dibromo-thiophene-3-yl)pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde (2), 6-[2,2′:5′,2″]terthiophen-3′-ylpyridine-2-carboxaldehyde (3) was prepared. The condensation of 3 with 2, 4-diisopropylcarbonohydrazide bis-hydrochloride affords the heterocyclic tetrazane (4), which was oxidized with 1,4-benzoquinone to form the stable radical II. II characterized by IR, ESR, and cyclic voltammetry. Oxidative electropolymerization of II and its precursor 4 at oxidation peak potential of the terthiophene using cyclic voltammetric scans produces radical functionalized polyterthiophene on a platinum electrode (poly(II)-Pt).

Abstract
Multinuclear hetero-tri-spin complexes based on a methyl-pyrazole nitronyl nitroxide radical, namely, [Ln2Cu3(hfac)12(4-NIT-MePyz)4] (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone; 4-NIT-MePyz = 2-{4-(1-methyl)-pyrazolyl}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) have been successfully obtained through a one-pot reaction of the radical ligand (4-NIT-MePyz) with Cu(hfac)2 and Ln(hfac)3. These 2p-3d-4f complexes exhibit five-nuclear structures with the sequence [Cu-Rad-Ln-Rad-Cu-Rad-Ln-Rad-Cu], in which each 4-NIT-MePyz radical acting as a bidentate bridging ligand is coordinated to one Ln(hfac)3 unit through one oxygen atom of the NO groups and to one Cu(hfac)2 unit with one nitrogen atom from the pyrazole ring. For complex 1, based on the spin Hamiltonian calculations and MAGPACK program, it is concluded that there exist ferromagnetic couplings between GdIII and NIT radicals, as well as between CuII and free radicals with J1 = 6.8(1) and J3 = 1.3(2) cm-1, respectively, and antiferromagnetic interactions between radical and radical with J2 = -2.8(5) cm-1. Complex 2 shows frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals under a zero or 2000 Oe dc field indicating single-molecule magnetic behavior.

Abstract
A new paramagnetic ligand, betaDTDA, and its coordination complex with Fe(hfac)2 are reported (betaDTDA = 4-(benzothiazol-2'-yl)-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl; hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato-). The neutral radical betaDTDA is the first dithiadiazolyl ligand designed to include an electropositive sulphur moiety outside the thiazyl heterocycle, increasing the capacity for supramolecular, structure-directing electrostatic contacts and enabling new pathways for magnetic exchange. The Fe(hfac)2(betaDTDA) complex is composed of a hs-Fe(ii) center with the three bidentate ligands arranged about the ion in a distorted octahedral 6-coordinate environment. The magnetic properties of crystalline Fe(hfac)2(betaDTDA) are consistent with strong antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling between the metal and ligand moments, giving rise to a well-defined Stotal = 3/2 ground state that is the only thermally populated state below 40 K. Below 4 K, this complex exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization detected by ac susceptibility measurements consistent with a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour.

Abstract
The combination of LnIII ions (GdIII, TbIII or DyIII) and a pyrazole nitronyl nitroxide radical results in three isomorphous complexes, namely, [Ln(hfac)3(NIT-Pyz)]2 (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone; NIT-Pyz = 2-{3-pyrazolyl}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide). Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that all of them are composed of two crystallographically independent mononuclear systems, in which the central LnIII ions are coordinated by three hfac and one bidentate chelating NIT-Pyz radical. The central LnIII ions are all in square antiprism geometry (D4d) polyhedron configurations. Based on the spin Hamiltonian calculations, there exist antiferromagnetic couplings in the GdIII-NIT radical system in complex 1. Complexes 2 and 3 show frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals in a zero field indicating single-molecule magnetic behavior. Moreover, Tb's complex (2) shows a single thermal relaxation process with an energy barrier of 26 K. For Dy's complex (3), the Orbach and Raman processes both contribute to the magnetic relaxation behaviors.

Abstract
We present the synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic properties of two high-nuclearity cobalt clusters formulated as [Co13(μ3-OH)3(μ3-Cl)(dpbt)5(ptd)Cl10][Co(H2O)2Cl2]·(CH3)2CHOH (1) and [Co24(μ3-OH)6(μ3-Cl)2(dpbt)10(ptd)2Cl16]·2CH3CH2OH (2), respectively (H2dpbt = 5,5'-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-3,3'-bis(1,2,4-triazole) and H2ptd = 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazine-5,6-diol). Compound 1 is composed of an inner [Co4(μ3-OH)3(μ3-Cl)] cubane and an outer [Co9(dpbt)5(ptd)Cl10] defective adamantane. Compound 2 reveals a giant {Co24} cluster possessing a dual-[Co12] skeleton from 1. The hierarchical assembly from 1 to 2 has been established and tracked through high-resolution electrospray ionization (HRESI-MS) analyses from the solvothermal reaction mother solution. Magnetic studies of 1 and 2 revealed the highly correlated spins, a glasslike magnetic phase transition at ca. 8 K, and slow relaxation behavior of SMM nature in the lower-temperature region (below 4 K).
