Abstract
The chemistry of multinuclear metal complexes bearing by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, is an area of fast growing interest in modern organometallic chemistry. In particular, complexes supported by mesoionic (MIC) 1,2,3-triazolylidenes are attracting a great deal attention due to their postulated superior donor capacity compared to classical NHC ligands. Despite the readily available synthetic routes to MIC-based ligand platforms featuring several substitution levels, most of the coordination chemistry of triazolylidenes is still dominated by mononuclear complexes. In this short review article, recent progress on the design and synthesis of multinuclear triazolylidene complexes (ranging from di- to tetranuclear species) is discussed. Special emphasis is placed on their structural features, electronic properties and catalytic applications.

Abstract
A new strategy for tuning the electronic properties of 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene metal complexes is reported using {Mo(η3-C4H7)(bipy)(CO)2} or {Re(bipy)(CO)3} fragments as substituents at the triazole N3 atom. The reaction of cationic molybdenum(II) and rhenium(I) 1-methyl-1,2,3-triazole compounds with the strong base KN(SiMe3)2 in the presence of electrophilic metal fragments, such as AgOTf (OTf = trifluoromethanesufonate) or [CuCl(IPr)] [IPr = 2,6-(diisopropyl)phenylimidazol-2-ylidene] affords a new type of 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene complexes. For silver(I) cationic bis(triazolylidene), [Ag(tzNHCM)2]OTf (M = [Mo], 2; [Re], 4), complexes are obtained, whereas in the case of Cu(I) mixed normal/mesoionic NHC, [Cu(IPr)(tzNHCM)]OTf (M = [Mo], 7; [Re], 8) complexes are formed. This special type of mesoionic N-heterocyclic carbenes bear a metal fragment at the N3 atom of the 1,2,3-triazole moiety, showing notable enhancement of the carbene electron donor ability compared to conventional alkyl-substituted analogues. Transmetalation from cationic silver bis(triazolylidene) complexes 2 and 4, prepared using this methodology, has proven to be very efficient toward [M'Cl(cod)]2 (M' = Rh, Ir; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene), affording the corresponding cationic bis(triazolylidene) [M'(cod)(tzNHCM)2]OTf (9-12) complexes. A subsequent reaction with CO(g) easily produces substitution of the diene ligand, affording the corresponding cis-dicarbonyl [M'(CO)2(tzNHCM)2]OTf (13-16) compounds.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of vanadium(V) oxo complex 1 with a pincer-type dianionic mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligand L1 and the general formula [VOCl(L1)]. A comparison of the structural (SC-XRD), electronic (UV-vis), and electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) properties of 1 with the benzimidazolinylidene congener 2 (general formula [VOCl(L2)]) shows that the MIC is a stronger donor also for early transition metals with low d-electron population. Since electrochemical studies revealed both complexes to be reversibly reduced, the stronger donor character of MICs was not only demonstrated for the vanadium(V) but also for the vanadium(IV) oxidation state by isolating the reduced vanadium(IV) complexes [Co(Cp*)2][1] and [Co(Cp*)2][2] ([Co(Cp*)2] = decamethylcobaltocenium). The electronic structures of the compounds were investigated by computational methods. Complex 1 was found to be a moderate precursor for salt metathesis reactions, showing selective reactivity toward phenolates or secondary amides, but not toward primary amides and phosphides, thiophenols, or aryls/alkyls donors. Deoxygenation with electron-rich phosphines failed to give the desired vanadium(III) complex. However, treatment of the deprotonated ligand precursor with vanadium(III) trichloride resulted in the clean formation of the corresponding MIC vanadium(III) complex 6, which undergoes a clean two-electron oxidation with organic azides yielding the corresponding imido complexes. The reaction with TMS-N3 did not afford a nitrido complex, but instead the imido complex 10. This study reveals that, contrary to popular belief, MICs are capable of supporting early transition-metal complexes in a variety of oxidation states, thus making them promising candidates for the activation of small molecules and redox catalysis.

Abstract
A novel, efficient and facile protocol for the synthesis of a series of [Ru(NHC)(CO3)(p-cymene)] complexes is reported. This family of Ru-NHC complexes was obtained from imidazol(in)ium tetrafluoroborate or imidazolium hydrogen carbonate salts in moderate to excellent yields, employing sustainable weak base. The ruthenium complexes were successfully utilized in the transfer hydrogenation of ketones as highly active multifunctional catalysts.

Abstract
The reaction of N,N-di(2,6-bis(isopropyl)phenylimino-pyrrolyl-α-methyl)-N-methylamine H2L1 with copper(i) sources such as CuX (X = Cl (1), Br (2), and I (3)) afforded bis(chelated) ionic copper(ii) complexes of the type [CuL1H]X. A similar type of mononuclear structure was obtained with Cu(NO3)2·(H2O)3. Conversely, binuclear copper(ii) complexes [Cu2(μ-L1)(μ-OOCCH3)(μ-OH)](4) and [Cu2(μ-L1H)(μ-OOCPh)(μ-O)] (5) were obtained from the reaction of Cu(O2CR)2·H2O with H2L1. Notably, these reactions in the presence of a base yielded the neutral copper(ii) complex [CuL1] (6). This product was also obtained from the reaction of complex 2 or 4 with NaOH in methanol. All structures feature a dianionic imino-pyrrole motif and a protonated central amine function except 4. The reaction of H2L1 with NiCl2·DME gave the mononuclear complex [NiCl2(L1H2)], 7. In contrast to this, the reaction of the newly synthesized sterically less encumbered ligand N,N-di(phenylimino-pyrrolyl-α-methyl)-N-methylamine H2L2 with NiCl2·DME gave the binuclear complex [NiCl(L2H2)(HOMe)]2[Cl]2 (8). Both 7 and 8 show the amine-azafulvene ligand form and coordination of the central amine. The reaction of complex 7 with NaHBEt3 yielded a neutral complex [NiL1] (8) containing the imino-pyrrole form. In the molecular structures, interesting secondary coordination spheres incorporating guest molecules such as CHCl3 and MeOH in the crystal lattices and the presence of helical enantiomers were observed and analysed. In one case, CHCl3 was found inside an unusual cage-like structure supported by halogen bonds. Preliminary DFT calculations on the geometry of the nickel complex with H2L1 showed that the pentacoordinated tbp geometry is more stable than the square planar geometry.

Abstract
A novel sustainable hydrogel catalyst based on the reaction of sodium alginate naturally extracted from brown algae Laminaria digitata residue with copper(ii) was prepared as spherical beads, namely Cu(ii)-alginate hydrogel (Cu(ii)-AHG). The morphology and structural characteristics of these beads were elucidated by different techniques such as SEM, EDX, BET, FTIR and TGA analysis. Cu(ii)-AHG and its dried form, namely Cu(ii)-alginate (Cu(ii)-AD), are relatively uniform with an average pore ranging from 200 nm to more than 20 μm. These superporous structure beads were employed for the copper catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of aryl azides and terminal aryl alkynes (CuAAC) via click chemistry at low catalyst loading, using water as a solvent at room temperature and pressure. The catalytic active copper(i) species was generated by the reduction of copper(ii) by terminal alkyne via the oxidative alkyne homocoupling reaction. The prepared catalysts were found to be efficient (85-92%) and regioselective by affording only 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles. They were also recoverable and reused in their dried form for at least four consecutive times without a clear loss of efficiency. A mechanistic study was performed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to explain the regioselectivity outcome of Cu(ii)-alginate in CuAAC reactions. The analysis of the local electrophilicity (ω k) at the electrophilic reagent and the local nucleophilicity (N k) at the nucleophilic confirms the polar character of CuAAC. This catalyst has the main advantage of being sustainably ligand-free and recyclable.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become immensely successful ligands in coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis due to their strong terminal σ-donor properties. However, by targeting NHC ligands with additional functionalisation, a new area of NHC coordination chemistry has developed that has enabled NHCs to be used to build up bimetallic and multimetallic architectures. This minireview covers the development of functionalised NHC ligands that incorporate additional donor sites in order to coordinate two or more metal atoms. This can be through the N-atom of the NHC ring, through a donor group attached to the N-atom or the carbon backbone, coordination of the π-bond or an annulated π-donor on the backbone, or through direct metalation of the backbone.

Abstract
The synthesis of heterobimetallic complexes remains a synthetic challenge in the field of organometallic chemistry. A possible approach in this regard might be the use of a bidentate heteroditopic bis(carbene) ligand that combines an imidazol-2-ylidene (nNHC) with a 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) connected by an organic spacer. The optimized strategy to heterobimetallic complexes with this type of ligand involves a 3-step procedure: (i) Coordination of the nNHC, functionalized with a 1,2,3-triazole ring, to a metal center; (ii) formation of the triazolium ring by alkylation of the triazole N-3; (iii) deprotonation of the tzNHC precursor and coordination of the second metal center. Following this procedure, a novel Au(I)-Ag(I) dinuclear complex was isolated and its properties were compared to the analogous homobimetallic Ag(I)-Ag(I) and Au(I)-Au(I) complexes. The study was completed by the determination of the molecular structures of some synthetic intermediates.

Abstract
We report the preparation and full characterization of a series of hydroxyl functionalized 1,2,3-triazolylidene-based PEPPSI complexes 2a-c and their catalytic application in the Suzuki cross coupling reaction of aryl chlorides/amides with boronic acids. Under basic reaction conditions, complexes 2a-c show a notable increase in their catalytic efficiency compared with two ether-wingtip functionalized PEPPSI analogues (3 and 4) and a commercially available NHC-Pd complex (5). The catalytic results suggest that deprotonation of the hydroxyl group in complexes 2a-c plays an important role in the overall process. Deprotonation of the alcohol moiety of complexes 2a-b with sodium tert-butoxide allows for the isolation of metallacycles 6a-b, which are proposed as the active species of cross coupling reactions.

Abstract
Novel silver(I), gold(I), and palladium(II) complexes were synthesized with bidentate heteroditopic carbene ligands that combine an imidazol-2-ylidene (nNHC) with a 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) connected by a propylene bridge. The silver(I) and gold(I) complexes were dinuclear species, [M2(nNHC-tzNHC)2](PF6)2 (M = Ag or Au), with the two bidentate ligands bridging the metal centers, whereas in the palladium(II) complex [Pd(nNHC-tzNHC)2](PF6)2, the two ligands were chelated on the same metal center. Because of the presence of two different carbene units, isomers were observed for the gold(I) and palladium(II) complexes. The molecular structures of the head-to-tail isomer for gold(I) complexes, with a twisted or folded-syn conformation of the bridge between the carbene units, were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The study was completed with a systematic structural investigation through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For palladium(II) species, the head-to-head form was structurally characterized. The dinuclear gold(I) complexes were emissive in the solid state in the blue region (PLQY up to 8%); time-dependent density functional theory (abbreviated as TD-DFT) calculations disclosed that the absorption bands have metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer character and evidenced that the emission occurs from the T1 level (phosphorescence).

Abstract
Synthesis and coordination of 4-halo-1,2,3-triazolylidenes have been developed. These novel ligands featured the character with σ-donation at carbon and a σ-hole at the halogen. Halogen bonding was observed by single crystal X-ray diffraction in their coinage metal complexes. The electronic properties of 4-iodo-1,2,3-triazolylidene were studied by both Ir-CO frequencies of the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) and Huynh's electronic parameter (HEP) method, which suggested similar electronic properties to those of imidazolylidenes. During HEP tests, an interesting tunability was observed when different electron donors were employed.

Abstract
Classical carbenes are usually described as neutral compounds featuring a divalent carbon with only six electrons in their valence shell. It was only in 1988 that our group prepared the first isolable example, in which the carbene center was stabilized by a push-pull effect, using a phosphino and a silyl substituent. In the last 30 years, a myriad of acyclic and cyclic push-pull and push-push carbenes, bearing different heteroatom substituents, have been isolated. Among them, the so-called N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which include cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs), are arguably the most popular. They have found a vast number of applications ranging from catalysis to material science, and even in medicine. In this Account, we focus on the synthesis, structure, electronic properties, coordination, and applications of a different class of stable cyclic carbenes, namely, 1 H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidenes. In contrast with NHCs and CAACs, these compounds have no reasonable canonical resonance forms that can be drawn showing a carbene without additional charges. According to the IUPAC, they belong to the family of mesoionic compounds and thus they are named mesoionic carbenes (MICs). In 2010, we prepared the first stable 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene, via a CuAAC reaction, followed by alkylation of the resulting 1,2,3-triazole, and deprotonation. Later, we synthesized more robust N3-arylated counterparts from 1,3-diarylated-1 H-1,2,3-triazolium salts. Both synthetic routes can be carried out in multigram scales, making these MICS readily available. Importantly, MICs do not dimerize which contrasts with NHCs that can give the corresponding Wanzlick-type olefin. This property leads to relaxed steric requirements for their isolation; even C-unsubstituted MICs can be stored for months in the solid state at room temperature. The practicality and easily scalable syntheses of MICs allow for the preparation of polycarbenes, such as bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidenes) (i-bitz), the analogues of the well-known 2,2'-bipyridines (bpy). MIC-transition metal complexes are excellent precatalysts for variety of chemical transformations, which include hydrohydrazination of alkynes, olefin metathesis, reductive formylation of amines with carbon dioxide and diphenylsilane, hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of N-heteroarenes in water, cycloisomerization of enynes, asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, and water oxidation (WO) reactions. Besides their catalytic applications, MIC-transition metal complexes have found applications in material sciences as exemplified by the preparation of the first iron(III) complex that is luminescent at room temperature. The peculiar properties of mesoionic triazolylidenes, combined with their enhanced stability, position them as excellent candidates to address some current challenges such as access to high-oxidation-state 3d metal complexes, the stabilization of highly reactive main group elements, the stabilization of nanoparticles, the preparation of efficient catalysts and photosensitizers based on earth-abundant transition metals, and the functionalization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes are a subclass of the family of N-heterocyclic carbenes that generally feature less heteroatom stabilization of the carbenic carbon and hence impart specific donor properties and reactivity schemes when coordinated to a transition metal. Therefore, mesoionic carbenes and their complexes have attracted considerable attention both from a fundamental point of view as well as for application in catalysis and beyond. As a follow-up of an earlier Chemical Reviews overview from 2009, the organometallic chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization is compiled for the 2008-2017 period, including specifically the chemistry of complexes containing 1,2,3-triazolylidenes, 4-imidazolylidenes, and related 5-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteratom stabilization such as (is)oxazolylidenes, pyrrazolylidenes, and thiazolylidenes, as well as pyridylidenes as 6-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes with reduced heteroatom stabilization. For each ligand subclass, metalation strategies, electronic and steric properties, and applications, in particular, in metal-mediated catalysis, are compiled. Mesoionic carbenes demonstrate particularly high activity in (water) oxidation, hydrogen transfer reactions, and cyclization reactions. Unique features of these ligands are identified such as their dipolar structure, their specific donor properties, as well as stability aspects of the ligand and the complexes, which provides opportunities for further research.
