Reversible Coordination of Boron–, Aluminum–, Zinc–, Magnesium–, and Calcium–Hydrogen Bonds to Bent {CuL2} Fragments: Heavy σ Complexes of the Lightest Coinage Metal

Pathway to a molecular calcium methyl

The dimeric β-diketiminato calcium hydride, [(BDI)CaH]2 (BDI = HC{(Me)CN-2,6-iPr2C6H3}2), reacts with ZnMe2 to afford the bimetallic calcium zincate complex, [(BDI)Ca(μ-CH3)2Zn(μ-H)]2, which subsequently undergoes an intramolecular reaction to effect the formation of [(BDI)CaMe]2, a notable omission from the homologous series of β-diketiminato alkylcalcium derivatives.

Steric and electronic influence on Cu-Cu short contacts in β-thioketiminato tricopper(I) clusters

A series of β-thioketiminate copper(I) complex trimers [LCuI]3 were synthesized by modifying the ligand framework with electron-withdrawing groups (F and Cl) or electron-donating groups (iPr and Me) at the N-aryl ring as well as with CF3 groups on the chelating backbone. This ligand modification significantly impacts the enhancement of Cu⋯Cu short contacts, which can be rationalized by using steric and electronic factors of the chelated ligand. We observed that this intramolecular cuprophilicity among [LCuI]3 complexes is primarily governed by the size of N-aryl ortho-substituents. These findings were well supported by X-ray crystallography, Raman spectroscopy, and Mayer bond order analysis. The electronic effects induced by the ligand modification on the LCuI fragment were investigated using CO and 2,4,6-CNC6H2Me3 as probe molecules. Corroborated by the FTIR and CV measurements, our results reveal that the β-thioketiminate SN chelators induce more pronounced changes in the electronic character of the LCuI fragment due to the presence of CF3 groups on the chelating backbone in comparison with the F or Cl substituents on the N-aryl ring.

Zinc-Promoted ZnMe/ZnPh Exchange in Eight-Coordinate [Ru(PPh3 )2 (ZnMe)4 H2 ]

The syntheses, reactivity and electronic structure analyses of [Ru(PPh₃)₂(ZnMe)₄H₂], 1 a, and [Ru(PPh₃)₂(ZnPh)₄H₂], 2 b, are reported. 1 a exhibits an 8‐coordinate Ru centre with axial phosphines and a symmetrical (2 : 2) arrangement of ZnMe ligands in the equatorial plane. The ZnMe ligands in 1 a undergo facile, sequential exchange with ZnPh₂ to give 2 b, which shows a 3 : 1 arrangement of ZnPh ligands. Both 1 a and 2 b exist in equilibrium with their respective 3 : 1 and 2 : 2 isomers. Mechanisms for ZnMe/ZnPh exchange and isomerisation are proposed using DFT calculations. The relationships of these {Ru(ZnR)₄H₂} species to isoelectronic Group 8 transition metal polyhydrides and related Schlenk equilibria in the Negishi reaction are discussed.

Synthesis and reactivity of heterometallic complexes containing Mg- or Zn-metalloligands

Heteronuclear metal complexes comprising main group metals and transition metals have attracted widespread attention from researchers due to their applications in stoichiometric and catalytic activation of small molecules with possible cooperative effects. Herein, the advances of heterometallic complexes containing Mg- or Zn-metalloligands over the past ten years are reviewed. They consist of two parts: (i) synthetic approaches to heterometallic complexes. Only a brief discussion is made on the different Mg/Zn precursors since they have been summarized before. (ii) Stoichiometric and catalytic reactivities of heterometallic complexes containing Mg/Zn metalloligands. The exploration of the cooperative catalytic reaction of heterometallic complexes is still in its infancy, promising but challenging; thus, further investigations are required in the future.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

1st row transition metal aluminylene complexes: preparation, properties and bonding analysis

The synthesis and spectroscopic characterisation of eight new first-row transition metal (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu) aluminylene complexes is reported. DFT and ab initio calculations have been used to provide detailed insight into the metal-metal bond. The σ-donation and π-backdonation properties of the aluminylene ligand are evaluated via NBO and ETS-NOCV calculations. These calculations reveal that these ligands are strong σ-donors but also competent π-acceptors. These properties are not fixed but vary in response to the nature of the transition metal centre, suggesting that aluminylene fragments can modulate their bonding to accommodate both electron-rich and electron-poor transition metals. Ab initio DLPNO-CCSD(T) calculations show that dispersion plays an important role in stabilising these complexes. Both short-range and long-range dispersion interactions are identified. These results will likely inform the design of next-generation catalysts based on aluminium metalloligands.

Calcium and Magnesium Bis(β-diketiminate) Complexes: Impact of the Alkylene Bridge on Schlenk-Type Rearrangements

Dinuclear heteroleptic alkaline-earth-metal complexes are interesting synthetic targets because the close proximity of two metals allows for cooperative effects. However, these complexes are also prone to undergoing Schlenk-type rearrangements, affording less-active homoleptic complexes. Here we present the metalation of bis(β-diketimine) ligands possessing flexible bridging groups, i.e., 1,2-ethylene, 1,3-propylene, and trans-1,2-cyclohexylene, using calcium and magnesium precursors. Four mononuclear homoleptic calcium complexes were obtained, highlighting the pronounced tendency of calcium to undergo Schlenk-like redistributions. In the case of magnesium, however, the bridging group plays a crucial role, yielding seven dinuclear heteroleptic complexes but also one mononuclear and one dinuclear homoleptic complexes. In addition, a trinuclear mixed heteroleptic-homoleptic magnesium complex, which is a rare example of an intermediate of the Schlenk equilibrium, was isolated.

Nickel(0)-Induced β-H Elimination of Magnesium Alkyls: Formation and Reactivity of Heterometallic Hydrides

We report the synthesis and reactivity of heterometallic Mg-Ni complexes with bridging hydrides. Treatment of magnesium monoalkyl complexes, which are supported by a tridentate β-diketiminato ligand bearing a pendent phosphine group, with nickel(0) reagent Ni(COD)₂ (COD: 1,5-cyclooctadiene) at a molar ratio of 2:1 resulted in the formation of a heterotrimetallic hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex via facile elimination of the corresponding alkenes. A heterobimetallic hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni] complex served as an intermediate species for the formation of the [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex. Computational studies revealed that the reaction was initiated by coordination of nickel to magnesium followed by an alkyl group transfer. β-H elimination at the nickel center subsequently occurred to give the heterometallic hydride-bridged complex. Density functional theory analysis also highlighted a three-center two-electron interaction for the Mg-H-Ni unit. The hydride-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex showed diverse reactivity toward unsaturated small molecules. For instance, reactions with isocyanides provided heterometallic species by coordination of isocyanides to the nickel center, with no subsequent reduction detected. Isocyanides could also be dissociated at 80 °C. In contrast, hydromagnesiation occurred upon treatment of the heterotrimetallic hydride with carbodiimides, affording C₃-symmetric complexes with three heteroleptic magnesium mixed β-diketiminate/amidinate moieties. The hydride-bridged heterotrimetallic complex underwent dehydrogenation reaction with phenyl acetylene to produce an acetylide-bridged [Mg-Ni-Mg] complex.

Electronic effect of a perfluorinated β-diketiminate ligand on the bonding nature of copper carbonyl complexes

Two copper complexes 17Fnac2Cu(C6H6) (3) and 17Fnac2CuCO (4) containing the monoanionic, perfluorinated β-diketiminate 17Fnac2- ligand (1) (17Fnac2 = FC[C(CF3)N(C6F5)]2) were synthesized and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 19F), cyclovaltammometry (CV), elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The perfluorinated 17Fnac2- ligand marginally reduces the π-back-bonding capacity of the copper centre to the carbonyl group in 4 when compared with the corresponding 16Fnac2- substituted complexes but substantially when compared with the fluorine free substituted derivatives. Quantum chemical calculations gave deeper insight into the bonding situation of this carbonyl complex, while CV studies were performed to determine the oxidation potential of 3 in solution. Based on these data, the influence of the degree of fluorination in different β-diketimine ligands on the electronic nature of the corresponding copper complexes is discussed.

A Reversible Phase Transition of 2D Coordination Layers by B-H∙∙∙Cu(II) Interactions in a Coordination Polymer

Materials that combine flexibility and open metal sites are crucial for myriad applications. In this article, we report a 2D coordination polymer (CP) assembled from CuII ions and a flexible meta-carborane-based linker [Cu₂(L1)₂(Solv)₂]•xSolv (1-DMA, 1-DMF, and 1-MeOH; L1: 1,7-di(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,7-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane). 1-DMF undergoes an unusual example of reversible phase transition on solvent treatment (i.e., MeOH and CH₂Cl₂). Solvent exchange, followed by thermal activation provided a new porous phase that exhibits an estimated Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 301 m² g^-1 and is capable of a CO₂ uptake of 41 cm³ g^-1. The transformation is reversible and 1-DMF is reformed on addition of DMF to the porous phase. We provide evidence for the reversible process being the result of the formation/cleavage of weak but attractive B-H∙∙∙Cu interactions by a combination of single-crystal (SCXRD), powder (PXRD) X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT calculations.

The partial dehydrogenation of aluminium dihydrides

The reactions of a series of β-diketiminate stabilised aluminium dihydrides with ruthenium bis(phosphine), palladium bis(phosphine) and palladium cyclopentadienyl complexes is reported.

The reactions of a series of β-diketiminate stabilised aluminium dihydrides with ruthenium bis(phosphine), palladium bis(phosphine) and palladium cyclopentadienyl complexes is reported. In the case of ruthenium, alane coordination occurs with no evidence for hydrogen loss resulting in the formation of ruthenium complexes with a pseudo–octahedral geometry and cis-relation of phosphine ligands. These new ruthenium complexes have been characterised by multinuclear and variable temperature NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the case of palladium, a series of structural snapshots of alane dehydrogenation have been isolated and crystallographically characterised. Variation of the palladium precursor and ligand on aluminium allows kinetic control over reactivity and isolation of intermetallic complexes that contain new Pd–Al and Pd–Pd interactions. These complexes differ by the ratio of H : Al (2 : 1, 1.5 : 1 and 1 : 1) with lower hydride content species forming with dihydrogen loss. A combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction studies have been used to interrogate the structures and provide confidence in the assignment of the number and position of hydride ligands. ²⁷Al MAS NMR spectroscopy and calculations (DFT, QTAIM) have been used to gain an understanding of the dehydrogenation processes. The latter provide evidence for dehydrogenation being accompanied by metal–metal bond formation and an increased negative charge on Al due to the covalency of the new metal–metal bonds. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first structural information for intermediate species in alane dehydrogenation including a rare neutron diffraction study of a palladium–aluminium hydride complex. Furthermore, as part of these studies we have obtained the first SS ²⁷Al NMR data on an aluminium(i) complex. Our findings are relevant to hydrogen storage, materials chemistry and catalysis.

Adding to the Family of Copper Complexes Featuring Borohydride Ligands Based on 2-Mercaptopyridyl Units

Borohydride ligands featuring multiple pendant donor functionalities have been prevalent in the chemical literature for many decades now. More recent times has seen their development into new families of so-called soft scorpionates, for example, those featuring sulfur based donors. Despite all of these developments, those ligands containing just one pendant group are rare. This article explores one ligand family based on the 2-mercaptopyridine heterocycle. The coordination chemistry of the monosubstituted ligand, [H3B(mp)]− (mp = 2-mercaptopyridyl), has been explored. Reaction of Na[BH3(mp)] with one equivalent of Cu(I)Cl in the presence of either triphenylphosphine or tricyclohexylphosphine co-ligands leads to the formation of [Cu{H3B(mp)}(PR3)] (R = Ph, 1; Cy, 2), respectively. Structural characterization confirms a κ3-S,H,H coordination mode for the borohydride-based ligand within 1 and 2, involving a dihydroborate bridging interaction (BH2Cu) with the copper centers.

A d10 Ag(i) amine-borane σ-complex and comparison with a d8 Rh(i) analogue: structures on the η1 to η2:η2 continuum

H3B·NMe3 σ-complexes of d8 [(L1)Rh][BArF4] and d10 [(L1)Ag][BArF4] (where L1 = 2,6-bis-[1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)ethyl]pyridine) have been prepared and structurally characterised. Analysis of the molecular and electronic structures reveal important but subtle differences in the nature of the bonding in these σ-complexes, which differ only by the identity of the metal centre and the d-electron count. With Rh the amine-borane binds in an η2:η2 fashion, whereas at Ag the unsymmetrical {AgH3B·NMe3} unit suggests a structure lying between the η2:η2 and η1 extremes.

Preparation and characterisation of heterobimetallic copper-tungsten hydride complexes

The preparation and structural characterisation of three new heterobimetallic hydride complexes containing 3-centre,2-electron W-H-Cu bonds is reported. These complexes have been characterised by single crystal X-ray crystallography and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The bonding in these complexes has been analysed by DFT calculations.
