Synthesis and Dual-Emission Feature of Salen-Al/Triarylborane Dyads

Dual-Emissive Monoruthenium Complexes of N(CH3)-Bridged Ligand: Synthesis, Characterization, and Substituent Effect

Three monoruthenium complexes 1(PF6)2-3(PF6)2 bearing an N(CH3)-bridged ligand have been synthesized and characterized. These complexes have a general formula of [Ru(bpy)2(L)](PF6)2, where L is a 2,5-di(N-methyl-N'-(pyrid-2-yl)amino)pyrazine (dapz) derivative with various substituents, and bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these compounds have been examined. The solid-state structure of complex 3(PF6)2 is studied by single-crystal X-ray analysis. These complexes show two well-separated emission bands centered at 451 and 646 nm (Δλmax = 195 nm) for 1(PF6)2, 465 and 627 nm (Δλmax = 162 nm) for 2(PF6)2, and 455 and 608 nm (Δλmax = 153 nm) for 3(PF6)2 in dilute acetonitrile solution, respectively. The emission maxima of the higher-energy emission bands of these complexes are similar, while the lower-energy emission bands are dependent on the electronic nature of substituents. These complexes display two consecutive redox couples owing to the stepwise oxidation of the N(CH3)-bridged ligand and ruthenium component. Moreover, these experimental observations are analyzed by computational investigation.

Variation of the Emission Efficiency and Wavelength from Fluorescent Zinc Salen Complexes upon Systematic Structural Modifications

Understanding the photophysical properties of metal salen complexes is not straightforward because the emission efficiency is altered irregularly upon structural modifications. The present study prepared zinc salen complexes with systematic structural variations to pinpoint critical factors to determine the emission efficiency. One of the important experimental observations is the regiochemistry of a phenolate substituent affecting emission efficiency from a salicylidene fluorophore, which is nicely assigned as arising from the photoexcited electronic structure of metal salen complexes. Another significant finding is the thermal fluctuation of a salen ligand arising from the mismatched ligand-metal interaction, which has a significant impact on fluorescence lifetime. The present study sheds light on hidden factors that alter photophysical properties of a metal salen complex, which provide valuable insights into designing new photoactive salen ligands.

Highly red-emissive salen–indium complexes: impact of 4-amino-substitution on the photophysical properties

4-NR2-appended salen–indium complexes were prepared via a one-pot synthetic pathway. The complexes exhibited narrow-bandwidth red emissions with high photoluminescence quantum yields that are the highest among the reported salen-based luminophores.

Synthesis of Highly Functionalizable Symmetrically and Unsymmetrically Substituted Triarylboranes from Bench-Stable Boron Precursors

A novel and convenient methodology for the one-pot synthesis of sterically congested triarylboranes by using bench-stable aryltrifluoroborates as the boron source is reported. This procedure gives systematic access to symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted triarylboranes of the types BAr2 Ar' and BArAr'Ar'', respectively. Three unsymmetrically substituted triarylboranes as well as their iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation products are reported. These borylated triarylboranes contain one to three positions that can subsequently be orthogonally functionalized in follow-up reactions, such as Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings or Sonogashira couplings.

Enhancing the thermally activated delayed fluorescence of nido-carborane-appended triarylboranes by steric modification of the phenylene linker

The introduction of a methyl group into the 4-position of the phenylene linker of nido-carborane–triarylborane D–A dyads, i.e., at the ortho position to the nido-carborane cage, largely enhances their thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

Nido-Carboranes: Donors for Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

An approach to the design of nido-carborane-based luminescent compounds that can exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is proposed. 7,8-Dicarba-nido-undecaboranes (nido-carboranes) having various 8-R groups (R=H, Me, i-Pr, Ph) are appended to the meta or para position of the phenyl ring of the dimesitylphenylborane (PhBMes₂ ) acceptor, forming donor-acceptor compounds (nido-m1-m4 and nido-p1-p4). The bulky 8-R group and meta substitution of the nido-carborane are essential to attain a highly twisted arrangement between the donor and acceptor moieties, leading to a very small energy splitting between the singlet and triplet excited states (ΔE_ST <0.05 eV for nido-m2, -m3, and -p3). These compounds exhibit efficient TADF with microsecond-range lifetimes. In particular, nido-m2 and -m3 display aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with TADF properties.

A salen-Al/carbazole dyad-based guest-host assembly: enhancement of luminescence efficiency via intramolecular energy transfer

A novel class of salen-Al/carbazole dyads (D1 and D2) was synthesized and fully identified. The emission spectra of the dyads presented intriguing dual-emission patterns via an intramolecular energy transfer (IET) state in solution. Furthermore, the IET feature of the dyads was clearly observed in the rigid state. Interestingly, the emission efficiency of the dyads was enhanced by the significant IET process from the carbazole group to the salen-Al moiety. Particularly, D1 exhibited a nearly three-fold enhanced luminescence efficiency compared to the corresponding mononuclear aluminum complexes (A1). Such an emission process of these guest-host systems was further supported by theoretical calculation.
