[MoO2]2+-Mediated Oxygen Atom Transfer via an Unusual Lewis Acid Mechanism

Metal-Organic Fragments with Adhesive Excipient and Their Utilization to Stabilize Multimetallic Electrocatalysts for High Activity and Robust Durability in Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Multimetallic electrocatalysts have shown great potential to improve electrocatalytic performance, but their deteriorations in activity and durability are yet to be overcome. Here, metal-organic fragments with adhesive excipient to realize high activity with good durability in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are developed. First, a leaf-like zeolitic-imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) is synthesized. Then, ionized species in hydrogen plasma attack preferentially the organic linkers of ZIF-L to derive cobalt-imidazole fragments (CIFs) as adhesive excipient, while they are designed to retain the coordinated cobalt nodes. Moreover, the vacant coordination sites at cobalt nodes and the unbound nitrogen at organic linkers induce high porosity and conductivity. The CIFs serve to stably impregnate trimetallic FeNiMo electrocatalysts (CIF:FeNiMo), and CIF:FeNiMo containing Fe contents of 22% and hexavalent Mo contents show to enable high activity with low overpotentials (203 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 238 mV at 100 mA cm-2 ) in OER. The near O K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure proves further that high activity for OER originates from the partially filled eg orbitals. Additionally, CIF:FeNiMo exhibit good durability, as demonstrated by high activity retention during at least 45 days in OER.

Oxygen atom transfer with organofunctionalized polyoxovanadium clusters: O-atom vacancy formation with tertiary phosphanes and deoxygenation of styrene oxide

We report a rare example of oxygen atom transfer (OAT) from a polyoxometalate cluster to a series of tertiary phosphanes followed by OAT from styrene oxide to the reduced scaffold, resulting in the formation of styrene.

We report a rare example of oxygen atom transfer (OAT) from a polyoxometalate cluster to a series of tertiary phosphanes. Addition of PR₃ (PR₃ = PMe₃, PMe₂Ph, PMePh₂, PPh₃) to a neutral methoxide-bridged polyoxovanadate-alkoxide (POV-alkoxide) cluster, [V₆O₇(OMe)₁₂]⁰, results in isolation of a reduced structure with phosphine oxide datively coordinated to a site-differentiated V^III ion. A positive correlation between the steric and electronic properties of the phosphane and the reaction rate was observed. Further investigation of the steric influence of the alkoxy-bridged clusters on OAT was probed through the use of POV clusters with bridging alkoxide ligands of varying chain length ([V₆O₇(OR′)₁₂]; R′ = Et, ⁿPr). These investigations expose that steric hinderance of the vanadyl moieties has significant influence on the rate of OAT. Finally, we report the reactivity of the reduced POV-alkoxide clusters with styrene oxide, resulting in the deoxygenation of the substrate to generate styrene. This result is the first example of epoxide deoxygenation using homometallic polyoxometalate clusters, demonstrating the potential for mono-vacant Lindqvist clusters to catalyze the removal of oxygen atoms from organic substrates.

Mechanism of the Molybdenum-Mediated Cadogan Reaction

Oxygen atom transfer reactions are receiving increasing attention because they bring about paramount transformations in the current biomass processing industry. Significant efforts have therefore been made lately in the development of efficient and scalable methods to deoxygenate organic compounds. One recent alternative involves the modification of the Cadogan reaction in which a Mo(VI) core catalyzes the reduction of o-nitrostyrene derivatives to indoles in the presence of PPh₃. We have used density functional theory calculations to perform a comprehensive mechanistic study on this transformation, in which we find two clearly defined stages: an associative path from the nitro to the nitroso compound, characterized by the reduction of the catalyst in the first step, and a peculiar mechanism involving oxazaphosphiridine and nitrene intermediates leading to an indole product, where the metal catalyst does not participate.
