Abstract
In this paper, we use mono- and bimetallic complexes based on Earth-abundant, cheap and benign zinc for the synthesis of sustainable aliphatic and semi-aromatic polyesters. Tridentate and hexadentate aldimine-thioetherphenolate ligands were used to obtain the desired zinc complexes by the reaction of proligands with opportune equivalents of zinc bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)amide]. The obtained bimetallic complexes 1 and 2 and the monometallic complex 3 were used as catalysts in the Ring-Opening Polymerization (ROP) of landmark cyclic esters, such as ε-caprolactone and lactide, and in the Ring-Opening COPolymerization (ROCOP) of cyclohexene oxide and phthalic anhydride under different reaction conditions. All catalysts were active in these two classes of reactions, showing good control of the polymerization processes. Interestingly, the bimetallic complexes have higher activity compared to their monometallic counterparts, highlighting the cooperation between the two zinc centers.

Abstract
This review describes recent advances in the synthesis of homopolymers of lactide and related cyclic esters via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) in the presence of metal complexes based on group 1, 2, 4, 12, 13 and 14 metals. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the initiator structure on the properties of the obtaining homo- and copolymers. Also, a separate chapter is devoted to the study of metal complexes in the synthesis of copolymers of lactide and lactones. This review highlights the efforts made over the last ten years or so, and shows how main-group metals have received increasing attention in the field of the polymerization of lactide and related cyclic esters.

Abstract
![]()
Redox-switching of
a formazanate zinc catalyst in ring-opening
polymerization (ROP) of lactide is described. Using a redox-active
ligand bound to an inert metal ion (Zn2+) allows modulation
of the catalytic activity by reversible reduction/oxidation chemistry
at a purely organic fragment. A combination of kinetic and spectroscopic
studies, together with mass spectrometry of the catalysis mixture,
provides insight in the nature of the active species and the initiation
of lactide ring-opening polymerization. The mechanistic data highlight
the key role of the redox-active ligand and provide a rationale for
the formation of cyclic polymer.

Abstract
4-(tert-Butyl)-2-trityl-6-(di-(2-picolyl)amine)phenol, LH, was prepared from paraformaldehyde, 4-(tert-butyl)-2-tritylphenol and di-(2-picolyl)amine. Reaction with Zn(N(SiMe3)2)2 gave LZnN(SiMe3)2. The complex was shown by X-ray diffraction study, variable
temperature NMR and DFT calculations to coordinate only one pyridine ligand, which allows for fast and facile complex isomerisation. LZnN(SiMe3)2 was active in rac-lactide polymerization, but in contrast to previous complexes of this type did not show any evidence for isotactic monomer enchainment via a catalytic-site mediated chain-end control mechanism. Addition of alcohol led to increased activity, but the complex was unstable in the presence of free alcohol.

Abstract
A series of six-coordinate titanium complexes 1-6 supported by pyrrolylaldiminate ligands were prepared via the reaction of 2 equivalents of ligands and Ti(OiPr)4 in toluene at 70 °C. The X-ray structure of 2 revealed that the two ligands were κ2-coordinated to the titanium center with the two pyrrole nitrogen atoms in trans positions and the two imine nitrogen atoms in cis positions. All complexes were active initiators for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide (rac-LA), ε-caprolactone (ε-CL), and three substituted ε-caprolactones (γ-methyl-ε-caprolactone (γMeCL), γ-ethyl-ε-caprolactone (γEtCL), and γ-phenyl-ε-caprolactone (γPhCL)). Polymerizations of all monomers were well controlled, affording predetermined molar masses and narrow dispersity values. Complex 5 exhibited the highest polymerization activities with rac-LA and ε-CL and its performance was comparable to other highly active six-coordinate titanium complexes reported thus far. Kinetic results revealed a first-order dependency on the monomer concentration, and the rate of polymerization was greatly influenced by the substituent on the imine nitrogen. End-group analysis of the isolated PLA and PCL suggested a coordination-insertion mechanism.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry and the activities in the ring-opening polymerization catalysis of racemic lactide (LA) of magnesium complexes of a series of {ONNN}-type sequential monoanionic ligands are described. All ligands include pyridyl and substituted-phenolate as peripheral groups. The ligands bearing either chiral or meso-bipyrrolidine cores led to single diastereomeric complexes, whereas the ligands bearing a diaminoethane core led to diastereomer mixtures. All {ONNN}Mg-X complexes [X=Cl, HMDS (hexamethyldisilazide)] led to highly active and isoselective catalysts. The complexes bearing the chiral bipyrrolidine core exhibited the highest activities (full consumption of 5000 equiv. of rac-LA at RT within 5 min) and highest isoselectivities (Pm =0.91), as well as a living character. The complexes of the meso-bipyrrolidine based ligands were almost as active and slightly less stereoselective, while those of the diaminoethane based ligands exhibited reduced activities and isoselectivities.

Abstract
The complete mol-ecule of the hexa-metallic title complex, namely, tetra-bromido-tetra-μ-hydroxido-hexa-kis-[μ-2-methyl-3-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)propan-2-olato]hexa-zinc(II) acetone disolvate, [Zn6Br4(C9H18NO)4(OH)4]·2C3H6O2, is generated by a crystallographic centre of symmetry. Two of the unique zinc atoms adopt distorted ZnO2NBr tetra-hedral coordination geometries and the other adopts a ZnO3N tetra-hedral arrangement. Both unique alkoxide ligands are N,O-chelating and both hydroxide ions are μ2 bridging. The crystal structure displays an O-H⋯O hydrogen bond between a μ2-OH group and an acetone solvent mol-ecule. The Hirshfeld surface has been calculated and is described.

Abstract
Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters (lactones, lactides, cyclic carbonates and phosphates) is an effective tool to synthesize biocompatible and biodegradable polymers. Metal complexes effectively catalyze ROP, a remarkable diversity of the ROP mechanisms prompted the use of density functional theory (DFT) methods for simulation and visualization of the ROP pathways. Optimization of the molecular structures of the key reaction intermediates and transition states has allowed to explain the values of catalytic activities and stereocontrol events. DFT computation data sets might be viewed as a sound basis for the design of novel ROP catalysts and cyclic substrates, for the creation of new types of homo- and copolymers with promising properties. In this review, we summarized the results of DFT modeling of coordination ROP of cyclic esters. The importance to understand the difference between initiation and propagation stages, to consider the possibility of polymer-catalyst coordination, to figure out the key transition states, and other aspects of DFT simulation and visualization of ROP have been also discussed in our review.

Abstract
Catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters (lactides, lactones) and cyclic ethylene phosphates is an effective way to process materials with regulated hydrophilicity and controlled biodegradability. Random copolymers of cyclic monomers of different chemical nature are highly attractive due to their high variability of characteristics. Aryloxy-alkoxy complexes of non-toxic metals such as derivatives of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy magnesium (BHT-Mg) complexes are effective coordination catalysts for homopolymerization of all types of traditional ROP monomers. In the present paper, we report the results of density functional theory (DFT) modeling of BHT-Mg-catalyzed copolymerization for lactone/lactide, lactone/ethylene phosphate and lactide/ethylene phosphate mixtures. ε-Caprolactone (ε-CL), l-lactide (l-LA) and methyl ethylene phosphate (MeOEP) were used as examples of monomers in DFT simulations by the Gaussian-09 program package with the B3PW91/DGTZVP basis set. Both binuclear and mononuclear reaction mechanistic concepts have been applied for the calculations of the reaction profiles. The results of calculations predict the possibility of the formation of random copolymers based on l-LA/MeOEP, and substantial hindrance of copolymerization for ε-CL/l-LA and ε-CL/MeOEP pairs. From the mechanistic point of view, the formation of highly stable five-membered chelate by the products of l-LA ring-opening and high donor properties of phosphates are the key factors that rule the reactions. The results of DFT modeling have been confirmed by copolymerization experiments.

Abstract
Two sodium/potassium tetradentate aminobisphenolate ion-paired complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized. These ion-paired complexes are efficient catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide (rac-LA) in the presence of 5 equivalents BnOH as an initiator and the side reaction of epimerization can be suppressed well at low temperatures. The polymerizations are controllable, affording polylactides with desirable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions; the highest molecular weight can reach 50.1 kg mol-1 in this system, and a best isoselectivity of Pm =0.82 was achieved. Such polymerizations have rarely been reported for isoselective sodium/potassium complexes without crown ether as an auxiliary ligand. The solid structures suggest that BnOH can be activated by an interaction with the anion of sodium/potassium complex via a hydrogen bond and that the monomer is activated by coordination to sodium/potassium ion.

Abstract
A series of mononuclear salen-sodium anions, as the first examples, were synthesized with tetra-alkyl ammonium as a counterpart cation. These complexes are efficient catalysts for the isoselective ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide; the molecular weights of polymers are under control and molecular weight distributions are narrow when five equivalents of BnOH is used as an initiator. The best isoselectivity value of Pm = 0.82 was achieved at -70 °C. The experimental results together with a density functional theory calculation show that a ligand-assisted activated monomer mechanism is more reasonable than an activated monomer mechanism for this system.

Abstract
Three potassium crown ether complexes supported with bulky amidinate ligands were synthesized for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide. The side polymerization reaction initiated directly by ligand anion was suppressed well in the presence of alcohol as our design, and the synthesis of linear polylactide with a molecular weight as high as 117.7 kg/mol was successful together with an isoselectivity value of Pm = 0.88 at -70 °C. In this system, lactide can be deprotonated by amidinate anion to give lactide enolate, which can initiate the ROP of lactide as a side reaction in the absence of alcohol; however, this side reaction can also be suppressed well in the presence of alcohol by a decrease in temperature. An interesting anti-Arrhenius-like behavior in the polymerization was discovered, which can be attributed to the fact that the active catalyst can be converted to a less active lactide enolate potassium complex at a high temperature.

Abstract
The synthesis of up to pentablock copolymers from various combinations of l-lactide and trimethylene carbonate was accomplished using a dinuclear zinc complex, and the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers evaluated.
Poly(l-lactide) (PLA) is a bioderived and biodegradable polymer that has limited applications due to its hard and brittle nature. Incorporation of 1,3-trimethylene carbonate into PLA, in a block copolymer fashion, improves the mechanical properties, while retaining the biodegradability of the polymer, and broadens its range of applications. However, the preparation of 1,3-trimethylene carbonate (TMC)/l-lactide (LA) copolymers beyond diblock and triblock structures has not been reported, with explanations focusing mostly on thermodynamic reasons that impede the copolymerization of TMC after lactide. We discuss the preparation of multiblock copolymers via the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of LA and TMC, in a step-wise addition, by a ferrocene-chelating heteroscorpionate zinc complex, {[fc(PPh2)(BH[(3,5-Me)2pz]2)]Zn(μ-OCH2Ph)}2 ([(fcP,B)Zn(μ-OCH2Ph)]2, fc = 1,1′-ferrocenediyl, pz = pyrazole). The synthesis of up to pentablock copolymers, from various combinations of LA and TMC, was accomplished and the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers evaluated.
