Advancing Understanding of the +4 Metal Extractant Thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (TTA-); Synthesis and Structure of MIVTTA4 (MIV = Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, U, Np, Pu) and MIII(TTA)4- (MIII = Ce, Nd, Sm, Yb)

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer at the Pu5+/4+ Couple

The synthesis and solution and solid-state characterization of [Pu4+(NPC)4], 1-Pu, (NPC = [NPtBu(pyrr)2]-; tBu = C(CH3)3; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl) and [Pu3+(NPC)4][K(2.2.2.-cryptand)], 2-Pu, is described. Cyclic voltammetry studies of 1-Pu reveal a quasi-reversible Pu4+/3+ couple, an irreversible Pu5+/4+ couple, and a third couple evincing a rapid proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction occurring after the electrochemical formation of Pu5+. The chemical identity of the product of the PCET reaction was confirmed by independent chemical synthesis to be [Pu4+(NPC)3(HNPC)][B(ArF5)4], 3-Pu, (B(ArF5)4 = tetrakis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluourophenyl)borate) via two mechanistically distinct transformations of 1-Pu: protonation and oxidation. The kinetics and thermodynamics of this PCET reaction are determined via electrochemical analysis, simulation, and density functional theory. The computational studies demonstrate a direct correlation between the changing nature of 5f and 6d orbital participation in metal-ligand bonding and the electron density on the Nim atom with the thermodynamics of the PCET reaction from Np to Pu, and an indirect correlation with the roughly 5-orders of magnitude faster Pu PCET compared to Np for the An5+ species.

Separation of gold from irradiated actinide material utilizing a 2- thenoyltrifluoroacetone extraction resin

Post-detonation nuclear forensics capabilities depend on the ability to rapidly isolate radionuclides to improve measurement quality. In this work an extraction chromatography resin was developed utilizing thenoyltrifluoroacetone and 1-octanol supported on Eichrom prefilter resin. The resin was tested in nitric and hydrochloric acid matrices. In nitric acid the resin was able to extract zirconium, while in hydrochloric acid matrices it was possible to extract iron and gallium. In all acid conditions tested, gold was retained but can be eluted from the column with 10 % thiourea.

Experimental and Theoretical Insight into the Ionic Liquid-Mediated Complexation of Trivalent Lanthanides with β-Diketone and Its Fluorinated Analogue

A multitechnique approach with theoretical insights has been employed to understand the complexation of trivalent lanthanides with two β-diketones, viz. 1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (L1) and 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (L2), in an ionic liquid (C6mim·NTf2). UV-vis spectral analysis of complexation using Nd3+ revealed the predominance of ML2+ and ML4- species. The stability constants for the PB complexes were higher (β2 ∼ 10.45 ± 0.05, β4 ∼ 15.51 ± 0.05) than those for the TPB (β2 ∼ 7.56 ± 0.05, β4 ∼ 13.19 ± 0.06). The photoluminescence titration using Eu3+ corroborated the same observations with slightly higher stability constants, probably due to the higher ionic potential of Eu3+. The more asymmetric (AL2ML4 ∼ 5.2) Eu-L2 complex was found to contain one water molecule in the primary coordination sphere of Eu3+ with more covalency of the Eu3+-O bond (Ω2L1 = 8.5 × 10-20, Ω4L1 = 1.3 × 10-20) compared to the less asymmetric Eu-L1 complex (AL1ML4 ∼ 3.5) with two water molecules having less Eu-O covalency (Judd-Offelt parameters: Ω2L1 = 7.3 × 10-20, Ω4L1 = 1.0 × 10-20). Liquid-liquid extraction studies involving Nd3+ and Eu3+ revealed the formation of the ML4- complex following an 'anion exchange' mechanism. The shift of the enol peak from 1176 to 1138 cm-1 on the complexation of the β-diketones with Eu3+ was confirmed from the FTIR spectra. 1H NMR titration of the β-diketones with La(NTf2)3 evidenced the participation of α-H of the β-diketones and protons at C2, C4, and C5 positions of the methylimidazolium ring. For the ML2 complex, 4 donor O atoms are suggested to coordinate to the trivalent lanthanides with bond distances of 2.3297-2.411 Å for La-O, 2.206-2.236 Å for Eu-O, and 2.217-2.268 Å for Nd-O, respectively, while for the ML4 complex, 8 donor O atoms were coordinated with bond lengths of 2.506-2.559 Å for La-O, 2.367-2.447 Å for Eu-O, and 2.408-2.476 Å for Nd-O. The Nd3+ ion was higher by 9.7 kcal·mol-1 than that of the La3+ ion for the 1:4 complex. The complexation energy with L1 was quite higher than that with L2 for both 1:2 and 1:4 complexes. Using cyclic voltammetry, the redox behavior of trivalent lanthanides Eu and Gd with β-diketonate in ionic liquid medium was probed and their redox energetic and kinetic parameters were determined.

Exploring Differences in Lanthanide Excited State Reactivity Using a Simple Example: The Photophysics of La and Ce Thenoyltrifluoroacetone Complexes

A series of four lanthanide thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) complexes consisting of two f0 (La3+ and Ce4+) and two f1 (Ce3+) complexes was examined using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. The wide range of spectroscopic techniques presented herein have enabled us to discern the nature of the excited states (charge transfer, CT vs ligand localized, LL) as well as construct a Jablonski diagram for detailing the excited state reactivity within the series of molecules. The wavelength and excitation power dependence for these series of complexes are the first direct verification for the presence of simultaneous competing, noninteracting CT and LL excited states. Additionally, a computational framework is described that can be used to support spectroscopic assignments as a guide for future studies. Finally, the relationship between the obtained photophysics and possible photochemical separation mechanisms is described.

Homoleptic Acetylacetonate (acac) and β-Ketoiminate (acnac) Complexes of Uranium

Transmetalation of potassium salts of differently substituted acetylacetonate (acac) and β-ketoiminate (acnac) with [U(I)₃(dioxane)_1.5] and [U(I)₄(dioxane)₂] resulted in the formation of homoleptic, octahedral complexes [U(^tBuacnac^Ph)₃] (with ^tBuacnac^Ph = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-5-(phenylimino)heptan-3-onate) in the oxidation states +III and +IV and the homoleptic, square prismatic complexes [U^IV(^Meacnac^Ph)₄] (with ^Meacnac^Ph = 4-(phenylimino)pentan-2-onate) and the homoleptic, square antiprismatic complexes [U(^tBuacac)₄] [with acac = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate (^tBuacac), 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl,4-methyl-3,5-heptanedionate (^tBuac^Meac), and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-phenyl-3,5-heptanedionate (^tBuac^Phac)] in oxidation states +III, +IV, and +V. Oxidation of [U^III(^tBuacnac^Ph)₃] (1) with AgOTf yielded [U^IV(^tBuacnac^Ph)₃][OTf] (2), which was fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, a combination of ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and infrared spectroscopies, and solid-state superconducting quantum interference device magnetization studies. Complexation of the sterically less encumbering ligand derivative ^Meacnac^Ph provided access to the tetravalent, square antiprismatic complex [U^IV(^Meacnac^Ph)₄] (3). Cyclovoltammetric analysis of the square antiprismatic [U^IV(^tBuacac)₄] (4), [U^IV(^tBuac^Meac)₄] (5), and [U^IV(^tBuac^Phac)₄] (6) revealed reversible anodic and cathodic waves, attributable to the U(III/IV) and U(IV/V) redox couples, both being chemically accessible, as tested in the case of 5. The corresponding U(III) and U(V) compounds, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U^III(^tBuac^Meac)₄] (7) and [U^V(^tBuac^Meac)₄][SbF₆] (8), were synthesized accordingly. Unfortunately, reduced 7 proved to be too reactive for isolation and could only be detected by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Notably, electrochemical studies on homoleptic uranium(IV) complexes with differently derivatized (R) ac^Rac ligands (R = H, Me, or Ph) feature large electrochemical windows of up to 2.91 V, measured between the uranium(III) and the uranium(V) species, in addition to high stability toward repeated potential scans.

Coordination of trivalent lanthanum and cerium, and tetravalent cerium and actinides (An = Th(IV), U(IV), Np(IV)) by a 4-phosphoryl 1H-pyrazol-5-olate ligand in solution and the solid state

Structural investigations of three actinide(iv) 4-phosphoryl 1H-pyrazol-5-olate complexes (An = Th(iv), U(iv), Np(iv)) and their cerium(iv) analogue display the same metal coordination in the solid state. The mononuclear complexes show the metal centre in a square antiprismatic coordination geometry composed by the two O-donor atoms of four deprotonated ligands. Detailed solid state analysis of the U(iv) complex shows that dependent on the solvent used altered arrangements are observable, resulting in a change in the coordination polyhedron of the U(iv) metal centre to bi-capped trigonal prismatic. Further, single crystal analyses of the La(iii) and Ce(iii) complexes show that the ligand can also act as a neutral ligand by protonation of the pyrazolyl moiety. All complexes were comprehensively characterized by NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy. A single resonance in each of the 31P NMR spectra for the La(iii), Ce(iii), Ce(iv), Th(iv) and Np(iv) complex indicates the formation of highly symmetric complex species in solution. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) investigations provide evidence for the same local structure of the U(iv) and Np(iv) complex in toluene solution, confirming the observations made in the solid state.

Sequestration of tetravalent neptunium from acidic feeds using diglycolamide-functionalized dendrimers in a room temperature ionic liquid: extraction, spectroscopic and electrochemical studies

Extraction of Np(iv) was studied using RTIL containing two poly(propyleneimine) based dendrimer ligands from HNO3 solutions. Studies of the extracted complexes were also carried out by Vis-NIR and cyclic voltammetry.

Bonding Trends in Tetravalent Th-Pu Monosalen Complexes

The synthesis of three complex series of the form [AnCl2 (salen)(Pyx)2 ] (H2 salen=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine; Pyx=pyridine, 4-methylpyridine, 3,5-dimethylpyridine) with tetravalent early actinides (An=Th, U, Np, Pu) is reported with the goal to elucidate the affinity of these heavy elements for small neutral N-donor molecules. Structure determination by single-crystal XRD and characterization of bulk powders with infrared spectroscopy reveals isostructurality within each respective series and the same complex conformation in all reported structures. Although the trend of interatomic distances for An-Cl and An-N (imine nitrogen of salen or pyridyl nitrogen of Pyx) was found to reflect an ionic behavior, the trend of the An-O distances can only be described with additional covalent interactions for all elements heavier than thorium. All experimental results are supported by quantum chemical calculations, which confirm the mostly ionic character in the An-N and An-Cl bonds, as well as the highest degree of covalency of the An-O bonds. Structurally, the calculations indicate just minor electronic or steric effects of the additional Pyx substituents on the complex properties.

Developing the 134Ce and 134La pair as companion positron emission tomography diagnostic isotopes for 225Ac and 227Th radiotherapeutics

Developing targeted α-therapies has the potential to transform how diseases are treated. In these interventions, targeting vectors are labelled with α-emitting radioisotopes that deliver destructive radiation discretely to diseased cells while simultaneously sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. Widespread implementation requires advances in non-invasive imaging technologies that rapidly assay therapeutics. Towards this end, positron emission tomography (PET) imaging has emerged as one of the most informative diagnostic techniques. Unfortunately, many promising α-emitting isotopes such as ²²⁵Ac and ²²⁷Th are incompatible with PET imaging. Here we overcame this obstacle by developing large-scale (Ci-scale) production and purification methods for ¹³⁴Ce. Subsequent radiolabelling and in vivo PET imaging experiments in a small animal model demonstrated that ¹³⁴Ce (and its ¹³⁴La daughter) could be used as a PET imaging candidate for ²²⁵Ac^III (with reduced ¹³⁴Ce^III) or ²²⁷Th^IV (with oxidized ¹³⁴Ce^IV). Evaluating these data alongside X-ray absorption spectroscopy results demonstrated how success relied on rigorously controlling the Ce^III/Ce^IV redox couple.

Series of Tetravalent Actinide Amidinates: Structure Determination and Bonding Analysis

Two series of isostructural tetravalent actinide amidinates [AnX((S)-PEBA)₃] (An = Th, U, Np; X = Cl, N₃) bearing the chiral (S,S)-N,N'-bis(1-phenylethyl)benzamidinate ((S)-PEBA) ligand have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized in solid and in solution. This study expands the already reported tetravalent neptunium complexes to the lighter actinides thorium and uranium. Furthermore, a rare Ce(IV) amidinate [CeCl((S)-PEBA)₃] was synthesized to compare its properties to those of the analogous tetravalent actinide complexes. All compounds were characterized in the solid state using single-crystal XRD and infrared spectroscopy and in solution using NMR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical bonding analysis including also the isostructural Pa and Pu complexes was used to characterize the covalent contributions to any bond involving the metal cation. Th shows the least covalent character throughout the series, even substantially smaller than for the Ce complex. For U, Np, and Pu, similar covalent bonding contributions are found, but a natural population analysis reveals different origins. The 6d participation is the highest for U and decreases afterward, whereas the 5f participation increases continuously from Pa to Pu.

Systematic comparison of the structure of homoleptic tetradentate N2O2-type Schiff base complexes of tetravalent f-elements (M(IV) = Ce, Th, U, Np, and Pu) in solid state and in solution

A series of tetradentate N2O2-type Schiff base complexes with tetravalent 4f- and 5f-block metals, [M(salpn)2] (H2salpn = N,N'-disalicylidene-1,3-diaminopropane; M = Ce, Th, U, Np, and Pu), were prepared to systematically investigate their solid state structure, and their complexation behaviour in solution with the goal to investigate the subtle differences between 4f- and 5f-elements. X-ray diffraction revealed that all investigated metal cations form [M(salpn)2] complexes. All the complexes show the same ligand arrangement with meridional conformation, amongst which only Ce(iv) exhibits unique behaviour upon crystallisation. [Ce(salpn)2] crystallises in two less symmetric systems (P1[combining macron] or P21/n), whilst all the other [M(salpn)2] crystallise in a more symmetric orthorhombic system (Pban). Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the observed structural peculiarity of Ce(iv) stems from the geometrical flexibility due to the more "ionic" nature of bonds to the 4f element. 1H NMR measurements revealed that [M(salpn)2] forms two different species in solution with and without an additional solvent molecule, where the relative distribution of the two species depends mainly on the ionic radius of the metal centre. Again, Ce(iv) behaves differently from the tetravalent actinides with a higher ratio of the solvent-molecule-coordinated species than the ratio expected from its ionic radius. Hence, this study is successful in observing subtle differences between 4f- (i.e. Ce) and 5f-elements (actinides; Th, U, Np, and Pu) both in the solid state and in solution on an analytically distinguishable level, and in relating the observed subtle differences to their electronic structure.

Dual red-NIR luminescent EuYb heterolanthanide nanoparticles as promising basis for cellular imaging and sensing

The present work introduces ternary Ln(III) (Ln = Eu, Yb, Lu) complexes with thenoyltriflouro1,3-diketonate (TTA^-) and phosphine oxide derivative (PhO) as building blocks for core-shell nanoparticles with both Eu(III)- or Yb(III)-centered luminescence and the dual Eu(III)-Yb(III)-centered luminescence. Solvent-mediated self-assembly of the complexes is presented herein as the procedure for formation of EuLu, EuYb and YbLu heterometallic or homometallic cores coated by hydrophilic polystyrenesulfonate-based shells. Steady state and time resolved Eu-centered luminescence in homolanthanide and heterolanthanide EuLu and EuYb cores is affected by Eu → Eu and Eu → Yb energy transfer due to a close proximity of the lanthanide blocks within the core of nanoparticles. The Eu → Yb energy transfer is highlighted to be the reason for the enhancement of the NIR Yb-centered luminescence. Efficient cellular uptake, low cytotoxicity towards normal and cancer cells, and sensing ability of EuYb nanoparticles on lomefloxacin additives via both red and NIR channels make them promising as cellular imaging agents and sensors.

Ultra-selective ligand-driven separation of strategic actinides

Metal ion separations are critical to numerous fields, including nuclear medicine, waste recycling, space exploration, and fundamental research. Nonetheless, operational conditions and performance are limited, imposing compromises between recovery, purity, and cost. Siderophore-inspired ligands show unprecedented charge-based selectivity and compatibility with harsh industry conditions, affording excellent separation efficiency, robustness and process control. Here, we successfully demonstrate a general separation strategy on three distinct systems, for Ac, Pu, and Bk purification. Separation factors (SF) obtained with model compound 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) are orders of magnitude higher than with any other ligand currently employed: 10⁶ between Ac and relevant metal impurities, and over 10⁸ for redox-free Pu purification against uranyl ions and trivalent actinides or fission products. Finally, a one-step separation method (SF > 3 × 10⁶ and radiopurity > 99.999%) enables the isolation of Bk from adjacent actinides and fission products. The proposed approach offers a paradigm change for the production of strategic elements.

Radionuclides are of great importance for fields such as nuclear medicine and waste recycling, but their efficient purification remains a challenge. Here the authors show that an octadentate hydroxypyridinone chelator enables efficient and robust separation processes for isotopes of Ac, Pu, and Bk.

Multiple Bonding in Lanthanides and Actinides: Direct Comparison of Covalency in Thorium(IV)- and Cerium(IV)-Imido Complexes

A series of thorium(IV)-imido complexes was synthesized and characterized. Extensive experimental and computational comparisons with the isostructural cerium(IV)-imido complexes revealed a notably more covalent bonding arrangement for the Ce═N bond compared with the more ionic Th═N bond. The thorium-imido moieties were observed to be 3 orders of magnitude more basic than their cerium congeners. More generally, these results provide unique experimental evidence for the larger covalent character of 4f⁰5d⁰ Ce(IV) multiple bonds compared to its 5f⁰6d⁰ Th(IV) actinide congener.

Complexation of 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) with trivalent f-cations in an ionic liquid: solvent extraction and spectroscopy studies

HTTA forms M(TTA)²⁺, M(TTA)₂⁺, M(TTA)₃° and M(TTA)₄⁻ complexes with lanthanides. Complexation is strongly favoured when the salt of TTA⁻ is used.

A convenient and practical synthesis of β-diketones bearing linear perfluorinated alkyl groups and a 2-thienyl moiety

A versatile and robust synthetic protocol for the preparation of β-diketones bearing 2-thienyl and perfluorinated alkyl radicals of different length or a methyl group was developed. This protocol is suitable for the preparation of multigram quantities of diketones without cumbersome purification procedures. Moreover, the known method for purification of diketones via copper chelates was improved considerably.

A series of dithiocarbamates for americium, curium, and californium

Characterizing how actinide properties change across the f-element series is critical for improving predictive capabilities and solving many nuclear problems facing our society. Unfortunately, it is difficult to make direct comparisons across the 5f-element series because so little is known about trans-plutonium elements. Results described herein help to address this issue through isolation of An(S2CNEt2)3(N2C12H8) (Am, Cm, and Cf). These findings included the first single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements of Cm-S (mean of 2.86 ± 0.04 Å) and Cf-S (mean of 2.84 ± 0.04 Å) bond distances. Furthermore, they highlight the potential of An(S2CNEt2)3(N2C12H8) for providing a test bed for comparative analyses of actinide versus lanthanide bonding interactions.

The coordination chemistry of CmIII, AmIII, and AcIII in nitrate solutions: an actinide L3-edge EXAFS study

Understanding actinide(iii) (AnIII = CmIII, AmIII, AcIII) solution-phase speciation is critical for controlling many actinide processing schemes, ranging from medical applications to reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. Unfortunately, in comparison to most elements in the periodic table, AnIII speciation is often poorly defined in complexing aqueous solutions and in organic media. This neglect - in large part - is a direct result of the radioactive properties of these elements, which make them difficult to handle and acquire. Herein, we surmounted some of the handling challenges associated with these exotic 5f-elements and characterized CmIII, AmIII, and AcIII using AnIII L3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as a function of increasing nitric acid (HNO3) concentration. Our results revealed that actinide aquo ions, An(H2O) x 3+ (x = 9.6 ± 0.7, 8.9 ± 0.8, and 10.0 ± 0.9 for CmIII, AmIII, and AcIII), were the dominant species in dilute HNO3 (0.05 M). In concentrated HNO3 (16 M), shell-by-shell fitting of the extended X-ray fine structure (EXAFS) data showed the nitrate complexation increased, such that the average stoichiometries of Cm(NO3)4.1±0.7(H2O)5.7±1.3 (1.1±0.2)-, Am(NO3)3.4±0.7(H2O)5.4±0.5 (0.4±0.1)-, and Ac(NO3)2.3±1.7(H2O)8.3±5.2 (0.7±0.5)+ were observed. Data obtained at the intermediate HNO3 concentration (4 M) were modeled as a linear combination of the 0.05 and 16 M spectra. For all three metals, the intermediate models showed larger contributions from the 0.05 M HNO3 spectra than from the 16 M HNO3 spectra. Additionally, these efforts enabled the Cm-NO3 and Ac-NO3 distances to be measured for the first time. Moreover, the AnIII L3-edge EXAFS results, contribute to the growing body of knowledge associated with CmIII, AmIII, and AcIII coordination chemistry, in particular toward advancing understanding of AnIII solution phase speciation.
