Abstract
Heptanuclear {GdIII7} (complex 1) and tetradecanuclear {GdIII14} (complex 2) were synthesized using the rhodamine 6G ligand HL (rhodamine 6G salicylaldehyde hydrazone) and characterized. Complex 1 has a rare disc-shaped structure, where the central Gd ion is connected to the six peripheral GdIII ions via CH3O-/μ3-OH- bridges. Complex 2 has an unexpected three-layer double sandwich structure with a rare μ6-O2- ion in the center of the cluster. Magnetic studies revealed that complex 1 exhibits a magnetic entropy change of 17.4 J kg-1 K-1 at 3 K and 5 T. On the other hand, complex 2 shows a higher magnetic entropy change of 22.3 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and 5 T.

Abstract
Multifunctional single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have sparked great interest, but chiral SMMs obtained via spontaneous resolution are rarely reported. We synthesized a series of chiral trinuclear hepta-coordinate lanthanide complexes [ZnII3LnIII3] (1 for Dy, 2 for Tb, 3 for Gd, and 4 for Dy0.07Y0.93) using the achiral flexible ligand H2L (2,2'-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(ethylimino)methylene]]bis[3,5-dimethylphenol]). The complexes crystallize in the chiral P63 group space, and two enantiomers of different chirality are spontaneously resolved. Three [Zn(L)Cl]- anions utilize the two phenoxy oxygen atoms of each L2- to coordinate with three lanthanide ions, respectively, and the three hepta-coordinate D5h lanthanide ions are arranged in a triangle. The chirality comes from the propeller arrangement of the peripheral three bidentate chelate L2- ligands like octahedral [M(AA)3]n+/- (M = transition metal ions; AA = bidentate chelate ligands, e.g., 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenathroline, ethylenediamine, acac- or oxalate). Complex 1 exhibits an AC susceptibility signal and is frequency-dependent, which is typical of SMMs. Complex 4, doped with a large amount of diamagnetic Y(III) in Dy(III), exhibits Ueff = 48.3 K and τ0 = 4.4 × 10-8 s in experiments. Complex 2 shows circularly polarized luminescence and apparent photoluminescence, typical of the f-f transitions of Tb(III).

Abstract
The work in this report describes the syntheses, crystal structures, dc/ac magnetic behaviour, and theoretical calculations (both ab initio CASSCF and DFT) of three defect dicubane/planar butterfly type tetradysprosium(III) compounds of compositions [DyIII4L4(μ3-OH)2(carboxylate)2(dmf)2] (carboxylate = formate (1), acetate (2), propionate (3)), where H2L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzylideneamino)phenol. In the butterfly type structures, two DyIII centres (Dyb) occupy the body positions while two other (Dyw) units occupy the wing positions. SHAPE analyses reveal that the coordination geometries of the Dyb and Dyw centres, both octacoordinated, are triangular dodecahedron (TDD) and square antiprism (SAPR), respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements give an indication of weak antiferromagnetic interactions and variable-field magnetization measurements reveal strong anisotropy in all the three compounds. The variable-temperature/frequency in-phase/out-of-phase AC susceptibility data reveal that all these three compounds are SMMs with two relaxation channels under zero dc field; slow relaxation (SR) and fast relaxation (FR) processes could be assigned to the SAPR (Dyw) and TDD (Dyb) metal centres, respectively. The simulated Ueff and τ0 values are: 49.0 cm-1 and 1.76 × 10-7 s for 1, 30.3 cm-1 and 1.51 × 10-8 s for 2 and 23.4 cm-1 and 9.64 × 10-7 s for 3. Furthermore, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations reveal that the ground state of DyIII centres are axial in nature with a dominating contribution from mJ = |±15/2>. The magnetization relaxation occurs via the first excited KD resulting in the large computed blocking barrier of Dyw (SAPR) centres compared to that of the Dyb (TDD) centres which corroborates the experimental measurements. The exchange parameters obtained from DFT calculations are generally in line with those obtained from the fitting of χMT vs. T in POLY_ANISO calculations. Interesting structural and magneto-structural correlations have been found, which are the major outcomes of this investigation.

Abstract
Rational selection of metal ions and organic ligands to synthesize metal-organic complexes (MOCs) is necessary for constructing multifunctional materials. Herein, we have obtained a novel heterotrimetallic Zn2Dy2Ir pentanuclear MOC by the assembly of DyIII, luminescent ZnII(valpn), and [IrIII(H2L)(ppy)2]Cl metalloligands (Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine, H2L = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-di-p-benzoic acid). Single-crystal structural analysis shows that the central [IrIII(L)(ppy)2]- bridges two ZnDy moieties using two carboxylates of L2-. Measurements of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) show that the maximum luminance is 284.2 cd/m2 and the turn-on voltage is 6 V. Magnetic studies reveal that Zn2Dy2Ir is a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) with an energy barrier of 19.1(2) K under a 2 kOe dc field. Zn2Dy2Ir shows luminescence sensing with a quenching efficiency of up to 99.0% for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP).

Abstract
The complexes of lanthanide metals, especially dysprosium, can generally exhibit excellent magnetic properties. By means of modifying ligands, dual functions or even multi-functions can be achieved. Here, we synthesized an eight-coordinate Dy(III) complex 1, [Dy(HL-o)2(MeOH)2](ClO4)3·4.5MeOH, which is single-molecule magnet (SMM), and the introduction of the rhodamine 6G chromophore in the ring-opened ligand HL-o realizes ligand-centered fluorescence in addition to SMM. Magnetic measurements and ab initio calculations indicate that the magnetic relaxation for complex 1 should be due to the Raman relaxation process. Studies on magneto-structural correlationship of the rhodamine salicylaldehyde hydrazone Dy(III) complexes show that the calculated energy of the first Kramers Doublet (EKD1) is basically related to the Ophenoxy-Dy-Ophenoxy bond angle, i.e., the larger Ophenoxy-Dy-Ophenoxy bond angle corresponds to a larger EKD1.

Abstract
Photo-responsive materials with tunable properties by multiple stimuli have been widely used as molecular machines, molecular logic gates, optical data storages, etc. In this work, we report a rhodamine B-based photo-responsive system, whose properties could be facilely modulated by metal ions (Zn(II), Ni(II) and Hg(II)). These metal ions endow the complexes (L-Zn, L-Ni and L-Hg) with similar photochromic property but distinctly different photo-induced fluorescence change. Upon UV light irradiation, the spirolactam ring in rhodamine B moiety turned from a close form to an open form, along with enlarged conjugated structure with intense absorbance. Interestingly, fluorescence "turn off", "no change" and "turn on" responses were induced by Zn(II), Ni(II) and Hg(II) respectively upon UV light irradiation. Taking advantage of the prominently different characteristics caused by metal ions, different logic gates were designed by simply varying the inputs of metal ions and UV light. This work provided a new strategy for developing multifunctional photo-responsive materials, which were further beneficial for constructing photo-controlled logic gates with tunable performance.

Abstract
Discovery of permanent magnetisation in molecules just like in hard magnets decades ago led to the proposal of utilising these molecules for information storage devices and also as Q-bits in quantum computing. A significant breakthrough with a blocking temperature as high as 80 K has been recently reported for lanthanocene complexes. While enhancing the blocking temperature further remains one of the primary challenges, obtaining molecules that are suitable for the fabrication of the devices sets the bar very high in this area. Encouraged by the fact that our earlier predictions of potential single-molecule magnets (SMMs) in lanthanide-containing endohedral fullerenes have been verified, here we set out to undertake a comprehensive study on CoII -ion-encapsulated fullerene as potential SMMs. To study this class of molecules, we have utilised an array of theoretical methods ranging from density functional to ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 methods for obtaining reliable estimate of zero-field splitting parameters D and E. Additionally, we have also employed, for the first time a combination of molecular dynamics based on DFT methods coupled with CASSCF/NEVPT2 methods to seek the role of conformational isomers in the relaxation of magnetisation. Particularly, we have studied, Co@C28 , Co@C38 and Co@C48 cages and their isomers as potential target molecules that could yield substantial magnetic anisotropy. Our calculations categorically reveal a very large Ising anisotropy in this class of molecules, with Co@C48 cages predicted to yield D values as high as -127 cm-1 . Our calculations on the smaller cages reveal the free movement of CoII ion inside the cage, leading to the likely scenario of faster relaxation of magnetisation. However, larger fullerene cages were found to solve this issue. Further models with incorporating units such as {CoOZn}, {CoScZnN} inside larger fullerenes yield axial zero-field splitting values as high as -200 cm-1 with negligible E/D values. As these units represent a strong axiality coupled with a viable way to obtain air-stable low-coordinate CoII complexes, this opens up a new paradigm in the search of SMMs in this class of molecules.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of monometallic lanthanide complexes supported by one salicylhydrazone ligand. Complexes of neodymium, erbium, and ytterbium have been synthesized, and exhibit near infrared luminescence with modest to high quantum yields. The luminescence of ytterbium is increased by a factor of five when comparing our complex to other salicylhydrazone-supported complexes.

Abstract
In this work, a rhodamine derivative was developed as a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe for Hg2+. It exhibited a highly sensitive fluorescence response toward Hg2+. Importantly, studies revealed that the probe could be used for ratiometric detection of Hg2+, with a low detection limit of 0.679 μM. The mechanism of Hg2+ detection using compound 1 was confirmed by ESI-MS, 1H NMR, and HPLC. Upon the addition of Hg2+, the rhodamine receptor was induced to be in the ring-opening form via an Hg2+-promoted hydrolysis of rhodamine hydrazide to rhodamine acid. In addition to Hg2+ detection, the naphthalimide-rhodamine compound was proven to be effective in cell imaging.

Abstract
Two new CoII complexes, namely bis{N-[(6-bromopyridin-2-yl)methylidene]-2-[6-ethylamino-3-(ethyliminiumyl)-2,7-dimethyl-3H-xanthen-9-yl]benzene-1-carbohydrazonate}cobalt(II) bis(perchlorate)-dichloromethane-methanol (1/1/2), [Co(C32H30BrN5O2)2](ClO4)2·CH2Cl2·2CH3OH or [CoII(L)2](ClO4)2·CH2Cl2·2CH3OH, (1), and the bis(tetrafluoridoborate) salt, [Co(C32H30BrN5O2)2](BF4)2·CH2Cl2·2CH3OH or [CoII(L)2](BF4)2·CH2Cl2·2CH3OH, (2) (L is commonly 6-bromopyridine-2-carbaldehyde rhodamine 6G hydrazone), have been successfully constructed and characterized. The crystal structure analysis revealed that complexes (1) and (2) are mononuclear and have a CoIIN4O2 distorted octahedral structure. The large π-conjugated xanthene moiety of the L ligand causes strong intermolecular π-π stacking interactions, yielding a supramolecular one-dimensional chain. Complexes (1) and (2) display an obvious fluorescence emission near 560 nm in the solid state. Magnetic investigations show that both (1) and (2) are paramagnetic, dominated by the structural distortion and spin-orbit coupling of CoII.

Abstract
In this work, a new rhodamine chemosensor (P) with excellent photochromic properties upon vis irradiation was designed and synthesized. The fabricated chemosensor P could detect Al3+ via the opening of the spirolactam ring of the rhodamine unit with high selectivity and sensitivity. The spirolactam ring opening was confirmed by NMR and infrared spectroscopy. Upon binding with Al3+, the generated 1 : 1 P-Al3+ complex, confirmed by Job's plot titrations and mass spectrometry analysis, could exhibit a remarkable fluorescence enhancement with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.16 μM. Furthermore, the sensing of P to Al3+ in vivo was also studied quantitatively and qualitatively in detail, and the results showed that the coordination between P with Al3+ was reversible in living cells.
