Uranyl/12-crown-4 Ether Complexes and Derivatives: Structural Characterization and Isomeric Differentiation

Reactions of gas-phase uranyl formate/acetate anions: reduction of carboxylate ligands to aldehydes by intra-complex hydride attack

In a previous study, electrospray ionization, collision-induced dissociation (CID), and gas-phase ion-molecule reactions were used to create and characterize ions derived from homogeneous precursors composed of a uranyl cation (UVIO22+) coordinated by either formate or acetate ligands [E. Perez, C. Hanley, S. Koehler, J. Pestok, N. Polonsky and M. Van Stipdonk, Gas phase reactions of ions derived from anionic uranyl formate and uranyl acetate complexes, J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom., 2016, 27, 1989-1998]. Here, we describe a follow-up study of anionic complexes that contain a mix of formate and acetate ligands, namely [UO2(O2C-CH3)2(O2C-H)]- and [UO2(O2C-CH3)(O2C-H)2]-. Initial CID of either anion causes decarboxylation of a formate ligand to create carboxylate-coordinated U-hydride product ions. Subsequent CID of the hydride species causes elimination of acetaldehyde or formaldehyde, consistent with reactions that include intra-complex hydride attack upon bound acetate or formate ligands, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reproduce the experimental observations, including the favored elimination of formaldehyde over acetaldehyde by hydride attack during CID of [UO2(H)(O2C-CH3)(O2C-H)]-. We also discovered that MSn CID of the acetate-formate complexes leads to generation of the oxyl-methide species, [UO2(O)(CH3)]-, which reacts with H2O to generate [UO2(O)(OH)]-. DFT calculations support the observation that formation of [UO2(O)(OH)]- by elimination of CH4 is favored over H2O addition and rearrangement to create [UO2(OH)2(CH3)]-.

Ion-molecule reactions of mass-selected ions

Gas-phase reactions of mass-selected ions with neutrals covers a very broad area of fundamental and applied mass spectrometry (MS). Oftentimes, ion-molecule reactions (IMR) can serve as a viable alternative to collision-induced dissociation and other ion dissociation techniques when using tandem MS. This review focuses on the literature pertaining applications of IMR since 2013. During the past decade considerable efforts have been made in analytical applications of IMR, including advances in one of the major techniques for characterization of unsaturated fatty acids and lipids, ozone-induced dissociation, and the development of a new technique for sequencing of large ions, hydrogen atom attachment/abstraction dissociation. Many advances have also been made in identifying gas-phase chemistry specific to a functional group in organic and biological compounds, which are useful in structure elucidation of analytes and differentiation of isomers/isobars. With "soft" ionization techniques like electrospray ionization having become mainstream for quite some time now, the efforts in the area of metal ion catalysis have firmly moved into exploring chemistry of ligated metal complexes in their "natural" oxidation states allowing to model individual steps of mechanisms in homogeneous catalysis, especially in combination with high-level DFT calculations. Finally, IMR continue to contribute to the body of knowledge in the area of chemistry of interstellar processes.

Trends in the Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of a Series of Porphyrinoid-Uranyl Complexes

In this paper, we have explored the relativistic density functional theory study on a series of deprotonated porphyrinoid (Lⁿ) complexes of uranyl to investigate the geometrical structures and chemical bonding. The ligands bound with uranyl in the 1:1 complexes [UO₂(Lⁿ)]^x (n = 4, 5, 6; x = 0, -1, -2), showing more thermodynamic stability for "in-cavity" structures of L⁵ and L⁶ than that of the "side-on" structure of L⁴ and an increase in stability with the increase of negative charges, L^2- < L^3- < L^4-. Among the six ligands, the cyclo[6]pyrrole presents the best selectivity toward uranyl. Based on chemical bonding analyses, the U-N_L bond in the in-cavity complexes adopts a typical dative N_L → U bond with mainly ionic bonding and significant covalency, which comes from the significant orbital interaction of U 5f_ϕ6d_δ7s hybrid AOs and N_L 2p-based MOs. This work provides a systematic understanding of the coordination chemistry in uranyl pyrrole-containing macrocycle complexes and the nature of chemical bonding in such systems, which may provide inspirations for the future design of synthetic targets that could be relevant to actinide separations or in the remediation of spent nuclear fuel.

Relativistic Effects Stabilize the Planar Wheel-like Structure of Actinide-Doped Gold Clusters: An@Au7 (An = Th to Cm)

Despite the chemistry of actinide-ligand bonding is continuing and of burgeoning interest, investigations of the chemical bonding of bimetallic complexes involving transuranics remain relatively less, and there are rarely studies on the bonding features between actinide and coinage metals (CM). We present a systematic research on the series of An@Au₇ (An = Th to Cm), UCM₇ (CM = Cu, Ag, Au), and WAu₇ clusters to investigate the unique geometries, electronic structures, and chemical bonding between An 5f6d orbitals and CM ns orbitals, and to find their periodicity across the actinides and within the group of transition metals. A unique planar wheel-like structure for An@Au₇ clusters with the help of actinide metals encapsulation via spin-orbit coupling, resulting in An(III). Instead, the transition-metal (TM) element W retains its usual six-gold-coordination structure in WAu₇, thus forcing the seventh Au out of plane. The An-CM interactions, depending on the ion radii, become stronger with the increase of the atomic number of the actinide metals, as well as the CM. These results show that the presence of actinides in clusters can lead to unique electronic and geometrical structures.

Characterization of holmium(iii)-acetylacetonate complexes derived from therapeutic microspheres by infrared ion spectroscopy

Microspheres containing radioactive ¹⁶⁶holmium-acetylacetonate are employed in emerging radionuclide therapies for the treatment of malignancies. At the molecular level, details on the coordination geometries of the Ho complexes are however elusive. Infrared ion spectroscopy (IRIS) was used to characterize several ¹⁶⁵Ho-acetylacetonate complexes derived from non-radioactive microspheres. The coordination geometry of four distinct ionic complexes were fully assigned by comparison of their measured IR spectra with spectra calculated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. The coordination of each acetylacetonate ligand is dependent on the presence of other ligands, revealing an asymmetric chelation motif in some of the complexes. A fifth, previously unknown constituent of the microspheres was identified as a coordination complex containing an acetic acid ligand. These results pave the way for IRIS-based identification of microsphere constituents upon neutron activation of the metal center.
