Abstract
Mononuclear Ru complexes catalyze dioxygen formation via water splitting; therefore, a detailed investigation into their water-oxidation process is necessary. In this study, we synthesized a series of Ru(III) complexes containing a dianionic tridentate ligand with three pyridine groups (one coordinated to Ru while the other two are "free") and investigated their substitution reactions in a water/acetonitrile mixture. Among the monodentate pyridyl ligands, the one at the equatorial position was crystallographically proven to be selectively substituted. Therefore, our results experimentally demonstrate the proposed coordination geometry for an intermediate during water oxidation over Ru complexes.

Abstract
Two mononuclear ruthenium(II) complexes of the types [Ru(trpy)(HL1)(OH2)]2+ (1Aq) and [Ru(trpy)(L2-κ-N2O)] (2) [where trpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine, HL1 = 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole, H2L2 = 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-4-carboxylic acid] have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized by analytical and spectroscopic [UV-vis, NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and IR] techniques. Complex 1Aq has been further characterized by X-ray crystallography. In an acidic aqueous medium (pH 1), complex 2 undergoes carboxylate/water exchange readily to form an aqua-ligated complex, [Ru(trpy)(H2L2-κ-N2)(OH2)]2+ (2Aq), having a dangling carboxylic group. This exchange phenomenon has been followed by IR, 1H NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. Electrochemical analyses of 1Aq and 2Aq (Pourbaix diagram) suggest the generation of a formal RuV═O species that can potentially promote the oxidation of water. A comparative study of the water oxidation activity catalyzed by 1Aq and 2Aq is reported here to see the effect of a dangling carboxylic group in the catalytic performance. Complex 2Aq shows an enormously higher rate of reaction than 1Aq. The pendant carboxylic group in 2Aq participates in an intramolecular O-O bond formation reaction with the reactive formal RuV═O unit to form a percarboxylate intermediate and provides an electron-deficient carbon center where water nucleophilic attack takes place. The isotope labeling experiment using 18O-labeled water verifies the attack of water at the carbon center of the carboxylic group rather than a direct attack at the oxo of the formal RuV═O unit. The present work provides experimental evidence of the uncommon functionality of the carboxylic group, the oxide relay, in molecular water oxidation chemistry.

Abstract
A copper complex, [Cu(dpaq)](ClO4) (1), of a monoanionic pentadentate amidate ligand (dpaq) has been isolated and characterized to study its efficacy toward electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen in neutral aqueous medium. The Cu(II) mononuclear complex, poised in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal structure, reduces oxygen at an onset potential of 0.50 V vs RHE. Kinetics study by hydrodynamic voltammetry and chronoamperometry suggests a stepwise mechanism for sequential reduction of O2 to H2O2 to H2O at a single-site Cu-catalyst. The foot-of-the-wave analysis records a turnover frequency of 5.65 × 102 s-1. At pH 7.0, complex 1 undergoes a quasi-reversible mixed metal-ligand-based reduction and triggers the reduction of dioxygen to water. Electrochemical studies in tandem with quantum chemical investigation, conducted at different redox states, portray the active participation of ligand in completing the process of proton-coupled electron transfer internally. The protonated carboxamido moiety acts as a proton relay, while the quinoline-based orbital supplies the necessary redox equivalent for the conversion of complex 1 to Cu(II)-hydroperoxo species. Thus, a suitable combination of redox non-innocence and proton shuttling functionality in the ligand makes it an effective electron-proton-transfer mediator and subsequently assists the process of oxygen reduction.

Abstract
Water splitting is one of the most promising solutions for storing solar energy in a chemical bond. Water oxidation is still the bottleneck step because of its inherent difficulty and the limited understanding of the O-O bond formation mechanism. Molecular catalysts provide a platform for understanding this process in depth and have received wide attention since the first Ru-based catalyst was reported in 1982. RuV =O is considered a key intermediate to initiate the O-O bond formation through either a water nucleophilic attack (WNA) pathway or a bimolecular coupling (I2M) pathway. Herein, we report a Ru-based catalyst that displays water oxidation reactivity with RuIV =(O) with the help of a redox-active ligand at pH 7.0. The results of electrochemical studies and DFT calculations disclose that ligand oxidation could significantly improve the reactivity of RuIV =O toward water oxidation. Under these conditions, sustained water oxidation catalysis occurs at reasonable rates with low overpotential (ca. 183 mV).

Abstract
Cerium(IV)-driven water oxidation catalysis mediated by a mononuclear ruthenium(III) complex, [Ru(L)(pic)3] (H3L = 2,2'-iminodibenzoic acid, pic = 4-methylpyridine), has been demonstrated in this work. The mechanistic details of water oxidation have been investigated by the combined use of spectroscopy, electrochemistry, kinetic analysis, and computational studies. It was found that water oxidation proceeds via formal high-valent RuVII species. The capability of accessing such a high-valent state is derived from the non-innocent behavior of the anionic tridentate ligand frame which helps in accumulation of oxidative equivalents in cooperation with metal center. This metal-ligand cooperation facilitates the multi-electron-transfer reaction such as water oxidation. Kinetic analysis suggests water oxidation at a single site of Ru where O-O bond formation occurs via radical-radical coupling pathway between the oxygen atom of ruthenium-oxo species and the oxygen atom of the hydroxocerium(IV) ion.

Abstract
Extensive efforts have been devoted to developing efficient and durable catalysts for water oxidation. Herein, we report a highly stable metal-organic framework that shows high catalytic activity and durability for electrically driven (an overpotential of 430 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in neutral aqueous solution) and photodriven (a turnover frequency of 16 s-1 and 12 000 cycles) water oxidation, representing the best catalyst for water oxidation reported to date. Computational simulation and isotope tracing experiments showed that the μ4-OH group of the {Co8(μ4-OH)6} unit participates in the water oxidation reaction to offer an oxygen vacancy site with near-optimal OH- adsorption energy.

Abstract
A series of polymer-supported cooperative PC(sp3 )P pincer catalysts was synthesized and characterized. Their catalytic activity in the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols and the transfer hydrogenation of aldehydes with formic acid as a hydrogen source was investigated. This comparative study, examining homogeneous and polymer-tethered species, proved that carefully designing a link between the support and the catalytic moiety, which takes into consideration the mechanism underlying the target transformation, might lead to superior heterogeneous catalysis.
