Asymmetric Cationic Phosphines: Synthesis, Coordination Chemistry, and Reactivity

Introducing Cationic Selenium-Containing Triazapentadiene Ligand Framework: Synthesis, Coordination Chemistry, and Antifungal Activity

Positively charged ligands are scarce. Here, we report the synthesis of unprecedented cationic selenium-containing triazapentadiene ligand framework. The reaction between 2-pyridylselenyl reagents and NaN(CN)2 in a 2:1 ratio produces the sodium complexes featuring the cationic selenium-containing triazapentadiene (SeTAP) ligand. The sodium-to-metal transmetalation allows facile preparation of SeTAP metal complexes, as exemplified by the reactions with CuCl2, AgNO3, NaAuCl4, and FeCl3. Density functional theory calculations have been used to analyze and characterize the chalcogen bonding interactions observed in the solid state for these compounds. Moreover, antifungal properties of the SeTAP ligand and its metal complexes were screened for in vitro activity against several phytopathogenic fungi. Phoma eupyrena exhibited prominent sensitivity against the action of most of the tested compounds.

Adamantane-type clusters: compounds with a ubiquitous architecture but a wide variety of compositions and unexpected materials properties

The research into adamantane-type compounds has gained momentum in recent years, yielding remarkable new applications for this class of materials. In particular, organic adamantane derivatives (AdR4) or inorganic adamantane-type compounds of the general formula [(RT)4E6] (R: organic substituent; T: group 14 atom C, Si, Ge, Sn; E: chalcogenide atom S, Se, Te, or CH2) were shown to exhibit strong nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, either second-harmonic generation (SHG) or an unprecedented type of highly-directed white-light generation (WLG) - depending on their respective crystalline or amorphous nature. The (missing) crystallinity, as well as the maximum wavelengths of the optical transitions, are controlled by the clusters' elemental composition and by the nature of the organic groups R. Very recently, it has been additionally shown that cluster cores with increased inhomogeneity, like the one in compounds [RSi{CH2Sn(E)R'}3], not only affect the chemical properties, such as increased robustness and reversible melting behaviour, but that such 'cluster glasses' form a conceptually new basis for their use in light conversion devices. These findings are likely only the tip of the iceberg, as beside elemental combinations including group 14 and group 16 elements, many more adamantane-type clusters (on the one hand) and related architectures representing extensions of adamantane-type clusters (on the other hand) are known, but have not yet been addressed in terms of their opto-electronic properties. In this review, we therefore present a survey of all known classes of adanmantane-type compounds and their respective synthetic access as well as their optical properties, if reported.

Welcoming Neighbour or Inhospitable Host? Selective Second Metal Binding in 5- and 6-Phospha-Substituted Bpy Ligands

The controlled formation of mixed-metal bimetallics was realised through use of a fac-[Re(CO)3(N,N'-bpy-P)Cl] complex bearing an exogenous 2,4,6-trioxa-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phosphaadamantane donor at the 5-position of the bpy. The introduction of gold, silver, and rhodium with appropriate secondary ligands was readily achieved from established starting materials. Restricted rotation about the C(bpy)-P bond was observed in several of the bimetallic complexes and correlated with the relative steric bulk of the second metal moiety. Related chemistry with the 6-substituted derivative proved more limited in scope with only the bimetallic Re/Au complex being isolated.

Acute Bite Angle POP- and PSP-Type Ligands and Their Trinuclear Copper(I) Complexes: Synthesis and Photo-Luminescence Properties

In the current work, the rational synthesis of trinuclear copper complexes, incorporating acute bite angle POP- and PSP-type ligands, is reported. The in situ formation of POP (Ph2P-O-PPh2) or PSP (Ph2P-S-PPh2) ligands in the presence of a copper(I) precursor gave access to various trinuclear copper complexes of the form [Cu3(μ3-Hal)2(μ-PXP)3]PF6 [X = O; Hal = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3) and X = S; Hal = Cl (5), Br (6), I (7)]. Related iodide-containing complexes and clusters, such as [Cu4(μ3-I)4(Ph2PI)4] (4) and [Cu3(μ3-I)2(μ-I)(μ-PSP)2] (8), could also be obtained via the variation of the reaction stoichiometry. The investigation of the photo-optical properties by photo-luminescence spectroscopy has demonstrated that the phosphorescence in the visible region can be switched off through the mere change of the heteroatom in the ligand backbone (POP vs PSP ligand scaffold). Theoretical studies have been conducted to complement the experimental photo-optical data with detailed insights into the occurring electronic transitions. Consequently, this systematic study paves the way for tuning the photo-optical properties of transition metal complexes in a more rational way.

Transition metal complexes of the PPO/POP ligand: variable coordination chemistry and photo-luminescence properties

In the current work the tautomeric equilibrium between tetraphenyldiphosphoxane (Ph₂P-O-PPh₂, POP) and tetraphenyldiphosphine monoxide (Ph₂P-P(O)Ph₂, PPO) in the absence and presence of transition metal precursors is investigated. Whereas with hard transition metal ions, such as Fe(II) and Y(III), PPO-type complexes, such as [FeCl₂(PPO)₂] (1) and [YCl₃(THF)₂(PPO)] (2), are formed, softer transition metals ions tend to form so-called coordination stabilised tautomers of the POP ligand form, such as [Cu₂(MeCN)₃(μ₂-POP)₂](PF₆)₂ (3), [Au₂Cl₂(μ₂-POP)] (4), and [Au₂(μ₂-POP)₂](OTf)₂ (5). The photo-optical properties of the PPO- and POP-type transition metal complexes are investigated experimentally using photo-luminescence spectroscopy, whereby the presence of metallophillic interactions was found to play a crucial role. The dinuclear copper complex [Cu₂(MeCN)₃(μ₂-POP)₂](PF₆)₂ (3) shows a very interesting thermochromic behavior and intense photo-luminescence with remarkable phosphoresence lifetimes at 77 K, which can probably be attributed to short intramolecular Cu-Cu distances.

Gold(I) Complexes with P-Donor Ligands and Their Biological Evaluation

Gold(I) complexes with phosphine ligands—[Au(TrippyPhos)Cl] (1) (TrippyPhos = 1-[2-[bis(tert-butyl)phosphino]phenyl]-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole), [Au(BippyPhos)Cl]0.5CH2Cl2 (2) (BippyPhos = 5-(di-tert-butylphosphino)-1′, 3′, 5′-triphenyl-1′H-[1,4′]bipyrazole), and [Au(meCgPPh)Cl] (3) (meCgPPh = 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-6-phenyl-2,4,8-trioxa-6-phosphaadamantane—were investigated as types of bioactive gold metallodrugs. Complexes (1)–(3) were characterized using IR, 1H, 13C, 31P NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and mass spectrometry (FAB-MS). Complexes of (1) and (2) exhibited substantial in vitro cytotoxicity (IC50 = 0.5–7.0 μM) against both the cisplatin-sensitive and -resistant variants of the A2780 human ovarian carcinoma cell line, as well as against the A549 human lung carcinoma, K562 chronic myelogenous leukemia, and HeLa (human cervix carcinoma) cells. However, among the compounds studied, complex (2) showed the most promising biological properties: the highest stability in biologically relevant media, selectivity towards cancer cells over the non-cancer cells (HUVEC, human umbilical vein endothelial cells), and the highest inhibitory effect on cytosolic NADPH-dependent reductases in A2780 and A2780cis cells among the gold complexes under analysis.

Flexible Synthesis of Phosphoryl-Substituted Imidazolines, Tetrahydropyrimidines, and Thioamides by Sulfur-Mediated Processes

The solvent-free sulfur-mediated reactions of phosphinic chlorides with alkyl diamines were developed for the practical synthesis of unknown phosphoryl-substituted 4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazoles, 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidines, and thioamides. Their good tolerance to functional groups, broad substrate scope, and easy scalability were shown. The chemoselective preparation of a variety of phosphoryl-substituted bis(thioamides) was accomplished via the adjustment of a solvent.
