Highly Active Dinuclear Titanium(IV) Complexes for the Catalytic Formation of a Carbon-Heteroatom Bond

N^N vs. N^E (E = S or Se) coordination behavior of imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands towards aluminum alkyls: efficient hydroboration catalysis of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes

The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic application of six aluminum alkyl complexes supported by various imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands are described. Six different unsymmetrical imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands [NHI^RP(Ph)(E)NH-Dipp] [R = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp), E = S (2a-H), Se (2b-H); R = mesityl (Mes), E = S (3a-H), Se (3b-H); R = tert-butyl (^tBu), E = S (4a-H), Se (4b-H)] were prepared by the oxidation of respective imino-phosphanamide ligands (1a, 1b and 1c) with elemental chalcogen atoms (S and Se). The aluminum complexes with imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands with the general formulae [κ²_NN-{NHI^RP(Ph)(E)N-Dipp}AlMe₂] [R = Dipp, E = S (5a), Se (5b); R = Mes, E = S (6a), Se (6b)] or [κ²_NE-{NHI^RP(Ph)(E)N-Dipp}AlMe₂] [R = ^tBu, E = S (7a), Se (7b)] were synthesized in good yields from the reaction of the suitable protic ligands (2a,b-H-4a,b-H) and trimethylaluminum in a 1 : 1 molar ratio in toluene at room temperature. All the protic ligands and aluminum complexes were well characterized by multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy, and the solid-state structures of 2a,b-H-4a,b-H, 5a,b-6a,b and 7b are established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The aluminum complexes 5a,b-7a,b were tested as catalysts for the hydroboration of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes under mild conditions. The catalytic hydroboration reactions of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes were accomplished with complex 5b at a mild temperature under solvent-free conditions to afford a high yield of the corresponding N,N-diborylamines, vinylboranes and alkyl boronate esters, respectively.

A binuclear aluminium complex as a single competent catalyst for efficient synthesis of urea, biuret, isourea, isothiourea, phosphorylguanidine, and quinazolinones

The synthesis and characterisation of two mononuclear aluminium alkyl complexes with the general composition [Al(Me)₂{Ph₂P(E)N(CH₂)₂N(CH₂CH₂)₂O}] (E = Se (2a); S (2b)), and two binuclear aluminium complexes, [Al(Me)₂{Ph₂P-(E)N(CH₂)₂N(CH₂CH₂)₂O}(AlMe₃)] (E = Se (3a) and S (3b)), are described. The binuclear aluminium alkyl complex 3a proved to be a proficient catalyst for the addition of simple nucleophiles to heterocumulenes, leading to the synthesis of a variety of products such as urea, biuret, isourea, isothiourea, phosphorylguanidine, and quinazolinone derivatives, in contrast to its mononuclear analogues. Complex 3a is the first example of a single competent catalyst, which is also low-cost and eco-friendly and derived from a main-group metal, under solvent-free conditions either at room temperature or mild temperatures. Complex 3a possessed a wide functional group tolerance including heteroatoms, yielding the corresponding insertion products in good quantities and with high selectivity.

DABCO-Catalyzed Reaction of 2-Naphthols with Aryl Isothiocyanates: Access to 2-Iminonaphtho-1,3-oxathioles

2-Naphthols 1 were found to react with aryl isothiocyanates 2 to provide 2-iminonaphtho-1,3-oxathioles 3 in the presence of DABCO as a catalyst. When elemental sulfur was used, moderate to good yields of 3 could be achieved from a nearly equimolar mixture of two starting materials 1 and 2. Products 3 could also be formed in the absence of sulfur or an external oxidant. In the latter case, an additional equivalent of 2 was found to act as a dehydrogenating agent.

Catalytic Hydroboration and Reductive Amination of Carbonyl Compounds by HBpin using a Zinc Promoter

In this paper, the chemoselective hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones, catalyzed by Zinc(II) complexes [ k 2 -(PyCH=NR)ZnX 2 ] [R = CPh 3 , X = Cl ( 1 ) and R = Dipp (2,6-diisoropylphenyl) and X = I ( 2 )], in the presence of pinacolborane (HBpin) in ambient temperature and solvent-free conditions, which produced corresponding boronate esters in high yield, is reported. Zinc metal complexes 1 and 2 were derived in 80-90% yield from the reaction of iminopyridine [PyCH=NR] with anhydrous zinc dichloride in dichloromethane at room temperature. The solid-state structures of both zinc complexes were confirmed using X-ray crystallography. Zinc complex 1 was also used as a competent pre-catalyst in the reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with HBpin under mild and solvent-free conditions to afford a high yield (up to 97%) of the corresponding secondary amines. The wider substrate scope of both reactions was explored. Catalytic protocols using zinc as a pre-catalyst demonstrated an atom-economic and green method with diverse substrates bearing excellent functional group tolerance. Computational studies established a plausible mechanism for catalytic hydroboration.

A Unified Approach for the Synthesis of Isourea and Isothiourea from Isonitrile and N,N-Dibromoarylsulfonamides

A unified approach has been developed for the synthesis of both isourea and isothiourea in a three-component coupling reaction by treating alcohols or thiols respectively with N,N-dibromoarylsulfonamides and isonitrile and in the presence of K₂CO₃. This metal-free process proceeds via carbodiimide intermediate at room temperature within a very short reaction time. A library of sulfonylisoureas and isothioureas has been made using this synthetic protocol with wide substrate scope in good to high yields.

Reported Catalytic Hydrofunctionalizations that Proceed in the Absence of Catalysts: The Importance of Control Experiments

The enlarged landscape of catalysis lies in the heart of chemistry. As the journey has set a milestone in organic synthesis, its darker side has not entered into the limelight. Studies disclose that the reported reactions by using catalysts were also attainable in the absence of catalysts in many cases. This article presents a literature collection that includes the significance of control experiments in hydrofunctionalization reactions. Systematic analysis reveals that the catalysts are ambiguous and might be unessential in chemical reactions enlisted here.

Recent advances in the carbon-phosphorus (C-P) bond formation from unsaturated compounds by s- and p-block metals

Researchers around the globe have witnessed several breakthroughs in s- and p-block metal chemistry. Over the past few years, several applications in catalysis associated with these main group metals have been established, and owing to their abundance and low cost and they have proved to be essential alternatives to transition metal catalysts. In this review, we present a detailed discussion on the catalytic addition of P-H bonds from various phosphine reagents to multiple bonds of unsaturated substrates for the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds with C-P bonds promoted by various s- and p-block metal catalysts, as published in the last decade.

Recent developments in highly basic N-heterocyclic iminato ligands in actinide chemistry

In the last decade, major conceptual advances in the chemistry of actinide molecules and materials have been made to demonstrate their distinct reactivity profiles as compared to lanthanide and transition metal compounds, but some difficult questions remain concerning the intriguing stability of low-valent actinide complexes, and the importance of the 5f-orbitals in reactivity and bonding. The imidazolin-2-iminato moiety has been extensively used in ligands for the advancement of actinide chemistry owing to its unique capability of stabilizing the reactive and highly electrophilic metal ions by virtue of its strong electron donation and steric tunability. The current review article describes recent developments in the chemistry of light actinide metal ions (thorium and uranium) bearing these N-heterocyclic iminato moieties as supporting ligands. In addition, the effect of ring expansion of the N-heterocycle on the catalytic aptitude of the organoactinides is also described herein. The synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes bearing N-heterocyclic iminato ligands are presented, and promising apposite applications are also presented. The current review focuses on addressing the catalytic behavior of actinide complexes with oxygen-containing substrates such as in the Tishchenko reaction, hydroelementation processes, and polymerization reactions. Actinide complexes have also found new catalytic applications, as demonstrated by the potent chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration and tandem proton-transfer esterification (TPTE) reaction, featuring coupling between an aldehyde and alcohol.

Highly Chemoselective Hydroboration of Alkynes and Nitriles Catalyzed by Group 4 Metal Amidophosphine-Borane Complexes

We report a series of titanium and zirconium complexes supported by dianionic amidophosphine-borane ligands, synthesized by amine elimination and salt metathesis reactions. The Ti^IV complex [{Ph₂P(BH₃)N}₂C₆H₄Ti(NMe₂)₂] (1) was obtained by the reaction between tetrakis-(dimethylamido)titanium(IV) and the protic aminophosphine-borane ligand [{Ph₂P(BH₃)NH}₂C₆H₄] (LH2) at ambient temperature. Both the heteroleptic zirconium complexes-[η⁵-(C₅H₅)₂Zr{Ph₂P(BH₃)N}₂C₆H₄] (2) and [[{Ph₂P(BH₃)N}₂C₆H₄]ZrCl₂] (3)-and the homoleptic zirconium complex [[{Ph₂P(BH₃)N}₂C₆H₄]₂Zr] (4) were obtained in good yield by the salt metathesis reaction of either zirconocene dichloride [η⁵-(C₅H₅)₂ZrCl₂] or zirconium tetrachloride with the dilithium salt of the ligand [{Ph₂P(BH₃)NLi}₂C₆H₄] (LLi2), which was prepared in situ. The molecular structures of the complexes 1, 2, and 4 in their solid states were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Of these complexes, only titanium complex 1 acts as an effective catalyst for the facile hydroboration of terminal alkynes, yielding exclusive E-isomers. The hydroboration of organic nitriles yielded diborylamines with a broad substrate scope, including broad functional group compatibility. The mechanism of hydroboration occurs through the formation of titanium hydride as an active species.

Hydroamination of isocyanates and isothiocyanates by alkaline earth metal initiators supported by a bulky iminopyrrolyl ligand

Synthesis of heteroleptic and homoleptic alkaline earth metal complexes supported by bulky bis-iminopyrrolyl ligands are reported. The catalytic hydroamination of isocyanates and isothiocyanates with aryl amines using calcium complex is presented.
