Tuning the O2 Binding Affinity of Cobalt(II) Centers by Changing the Structural and Electronic Properties of the Distal Substituents on Azole-Based Chelating Ligands

Reversible Dioxygen Binding to Co(II) Complexes with Noninnocent Ligands

A series of mononuclear Co(II) complexes with noninnocent (redox-active) ligands are prepared that exhibit metal-ligand cooperativity during the reversible binding of O2. The complexes have the general formula, [CoII(LS,N)(TpR2)] (R = Me, Ph), where LS,N is a bidentate o-aminothiophenolate and TpR2 is a hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate scorpionate with R-substituents at the 3- and 5-positions. Exposure to O2 at room temperature results in one-electron oxidation and deprotonation of LS,N. The oxidized derivatives possess substantial "singlet diradical" character arising from antiferromagnetic coupling between an iminothiosemiquinonate (ITSQ•-) ligand radical and a low-spin Co(II) ion. The [CoII(TpMe2)(X2ITSQ)] complexes, where X = H or tBu, coordinate O2 reversibly at reduced temperatures to provide Co/O2 adducts. The O2 binding reactions closely resemble those previously reported by our group (Kumar et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019,141, 10984-10987) for the related complexes [CoII(TpMe2)(tBu2SQ)] and [CoII(TpMe2)(tBu2ISQ)], where tBu2(I)SQ represents 4,6-di-tert-butyl-(2-imino)semiquinonate radicals. In each case, the oxygenation reaction proceeds via the addition of O2 to both the cobalt ion and the ligand radical, generating metallocyclic cobalt(III)-alkylperoxo structures. Thermodynamic measurements elucidate the relationship between O2 affinity and redox potentials of the (imino)(thio)semiquinonate radicals, as well as energetic differences between these reactions and conventional metal-based oxygenations. The results highlight the utility and versatility of noninnocent ligands in the design of O2-absorbing compounds.

Metal-organic frameworks as O2-selective adsorbents for air separations

Oxygen is a critical gas in numerous industries and is produced globally on a gigatonne scale, primarily through energy-intensive cryogenic distillation of air. The realization of large-scale adsorption-based air separations could enable a significant reduction in associated worldwide energy consumption and would constitute an important component of broader efforts to combat climate change. Certain small-scale air separations are carried out using N2-selective adsorbents, although the low capacities, poor selectivities, and high regeneration energies associated with these materials limit the extent of their usage. In contrast, the realization of O2-selective adsorbents may facilitate more widespread adoption of adsorptive air separations, which could enable the decentralization of O2 production and utilization and advance new uses for O2. Here, we present a detailed evaluation of the potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to serve as O2-selective adsorbents for air separations. Drawing insights from biological and molecular systems that selectively bind O2, we survey the field of O2-selective MOFs, highlighting progress and identifying promising areas for future exploration. As a guide for further research, the importance of moving beyond the traditional evaluation of O2 adsorption enthalpy, ΔH, is emphasized, and the free energy of O2 adsorption, ΔG, is discussed as the key metric for understanding and predicting MOF performance under practical conditions. Based on a proof-of-concept assessment of O2 binding carried out for eight different MOFs using experimentally derived capacities and thermodynamic parameters, we identify two existing materials and one proposed framework with nearly optimal ΔG values for operation under user-defined conditions. While enhancements are still needed in other material properties, the insights from the assessments herein serve as a guide for future materials design and evaluation. Computational approaches based on density functional theory with periodic boundary conditions are also discussed as complementary to experimental efforts, and new predictions enable identification of additional promising MOF systems for investigation.

A tetra Co(II/III) complex with an open cubane Co4O4 core and square-pyramidal Co(II) and octahedral Co(III) centres: bifunctional electrocatalytic activity towards water splitting at neutral pH

The reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol, 4-methoxybenzoylhydrazine and Co(OAc)₂·4H₂O in 1 : 2 : 2 mole ratio in methanol under aerobic conditions produced in 61% yield a tetranuclear complex having the molecular formula [Co^IICo^III(μ-OAc)(μ₃-OH)(μ-L)]₂ where OAc^- and L^3- represent acetate and N',N''-(5-methyl-2-oxido-1,3-phenylene)bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(4-methoxybenzoylhydrazonate), respectively. The elemental analysis and the mass spectrometric data confirmed the molecular formula of the complex. It is electrically non-conducting and paramagnetic. The complex crystallized as acetonitrile solvate. The X-ray structure shows that each Co(II) centre has a distorted square-pyramidal NO₄ coordination sphere, while each Co(III) centre is in a distorted octahedral NO₅ environment. The four metal atoms and the four bridging O-atoms form an open cubane type Co₄O₄ motif. In the crystal lattice, self-assembly of the solvated complex via intermolecular O-H⋯O interaction leads to a two-dimensional network structure. The infrared and electronic spectroscopic features of the complex are consistent with its molecular structure. Cryomagnetic measurements together with theoretical calculations suggest the presence of easy-axis anisotropy for the square-pyramidal Co(II) centres. The complex is redox-active and displays metal centred oxidation and reduction responses on the anodic and cathodic sides, respectively, of the Ag/AgCl electrode. Bifunctional heterogeneous electrocatalytic activity of the complex towards O₂ and H₂ evolution reactions (OER and HER) in neutral aqueous medium has been explored in detail.
