Proton transfer kinetics of transition metal hydride complexes and implications for fuel-forming reactions

Proton transfer reactions involving transition metal hydride complexes are prevalent in a number of catalytic fuel-forming reactions, where the proton transfer kinetics to or from the metal center can have significant impacts on the efficiency, selectivity, and stability associated with the catalytic cycle. This review correlates the often slow proton transfer rate constants of transition metal hydride complexes to their electronic and structural descriptors and provides perspective on how to exploit these parameters to control proton transfer kinetics to and from the metal center. A toolbox of techniques for experimental determination of proton transfer rate constants is discussed, and case studies where proton transfer rate constant determination informs fuel-forming reactions are highlighted. Opportunities for extending proton transfer kinetic measurements to additional systems are presented, and the importance of synergizing the thermodynamics and kinetics of proton transfer involving transition metal hydride complexes is emphasized.

Secondary Coordination Sphere Alkylation Promotes Cyclometalation

Diphosphines have taken on a dominant role as supporting ligands in transition-metal chemistry. Here, we describe complexes of the type [Cp*Fe(diphosphine)(X)] (X = Cl, H) where for diphosphine = 1,2-bis(di-allylphosphino)ethane (tape), a Lewis-acidic secondary coordination sphere (SCS) was installed via allyl group hydroboration using dicyclohexylborane (HBCy₂). The resulting chloride complex, [Cp*Fe(P₂B^Cy₄)(Cl)] (P₂B^Cy₄ = 1,2-bis(di(3-cyclohexylboranyl)propylphosphino)ethane), was treated with n-butyllithium (1-10 equiv), resulting incyclometalation at iron. This reactivity is contrasted with [Cp*Fe(dnppe)(Cl)] (dnppe = 1,2-bis(di-n-propylphosphino)ethane), whereby addition of n-butyllithium provides a mixture of products. Overall, cyclometalation is a common elementary transformation in organometallic chemistry; here we describe how this outcome is accessed in response to Lewis acid SCS incorporation.

Trans Ligand Determines the Stability of Paramagnetic Manganese(II) Hydrides of the Type trans-[MnH(L)(dmpe)2]+ Where L is PMe3, C2H4, or CO

Paramagnetic metal hydride (PMH) complexes play important roles in catalytic applications and bioinorganic chemistry. 3d PMH chemistry has largely focused on Ti, Mn, Fe, and Co. Various Mn^II PMHs have been proposed as intermediates in catalysis, but isolated Mn^II PMHs are limited to dimeric high-spin Mn^II structures with bridging hydrides. In this paper, a series of the first low-spin monomeric Mn^II PMH complexes are generated by chemical oxidation of their Mn^I analogues. This series is of the type trans-[MnH(L)(dmpe)₂]^+/0 where the trans ligand L is PMe₃, C₂H₄, or CO [dmpe is 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane], and the thermal stability of the Mn^II hydride complexes was found to be strongly dependent on the identity of the trans ligand. When L is PMe₃, the complex is the first example of an isolated monomeric Mn^II hydride complex. In contrast, when L is C₂H₄ or CO, the complexes are only stable at low temperatures; upon warming to room temperature, the former decomposed to afford [Mn(dmpe)₃]⁺, accompanied by ethane and ethylene, whereas the latter eliminated H₂, generating [Mn(MeCN)(CO)(dmpe)₂]⁺ or a mixture of products including [Mn(κ¹-PF₆)(CO)(dmpe)₂], depending on the reaction conditions. All PMHs were characterized by low-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and stable [MnH(PMe₃)(dmpe)₂]⁺ was further characterized by UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, Superconducting Quantum Interference Device magnetometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Noteworthy spectral properties are the significant EPR superhyperfine coupling to the hydride (∼85 MHz) and an increase (+33 cm^-1) in the Mn-H IR stretch upon oxidation. Density functional theory calculations were also employed to gain insights into the acidity and bond strengths of the complexes. Mn^II-H bond dissociation free energies are estimated to decrease in the series of complexes from 60 (L = PMe₃) to 47 kcal/mol (L = CO).

A 1,2,3-triazole-derived pincer-type mesoionic carbene complex of iron(II): carbonyl elimination and hydrosilylation of aromatic aldehydes via the concerted reaction with hydrosilane and a base

Iron complexes bearing 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene were synthesized and applied to the reaction with hydrosilane and homogeneous catalytic hydrosilylation of aromatic ketones and aldehydes. Addition of a free carbene to a solution of Fe(CO)₄Br₂ yielded an octahedral, diamagnetic and cationic iron(II) complex [Fe(1,2,3-triazolylidene)(CO)₂Br]⁺. Pyrolysis of the dicarbonyl complex eliminated the two CO ligands to form a paramagnetic four-coordinate complex. A theoretical study using DFT calculations indicated that the spin state changed from singlet to quintet during ligand elimination. Investigations of the successful hydrosilylation of acetophenone and benzaldehyde derivatives using MIC-iron(II) bromide suggested the importance of the base for efficient conversion in the catalytic process. The bromide-to-hydride exchange reaction, transmetallation, of MIC-iron(II) bromide in the presence of KO^tBu and HSi(OEt)₃ which could occur in the initial process of hydrosilylation was proposed, and supported by a theoretical study.

Photo-Initiated Cobalt-Catalyzed Radical Olefin Hydrogenation

Outer‐sphere radical hydrogenation of olefins proceeds via stepwise hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from transition metal hydride species to the substrate. Typical catalysts exhibit M−H bonds that are either too weak to efficiently activate H₂ or too strong to reduce unactivated olefins. This contribution evaluates an alternative approach, that starts from a square‐planar cobalt(II) hydride complex. Photoactivation results in Co−H bond homolysis. The three‐coordinate cobalt(I) photoproduct binds H₂ to give a dihydrogen complex, which is a strong hydrogen atom donor, enabling the stepwise hydrogenation of both styrenes and unactivated aliphatic olefins with H₂ via HAT.

Trans Element-Hydrogen Bonds: A Distinctive Difference Between Transition Metals and Main Group Elements

The change in sign of the interaction force constant between element-hydrogen stretching modes of trans-dihydrides of the d block and p block elements is analyzed for the first time. As the transition metal M approaches group 12, the higher energy symmetric trans-H-M-H vibration ν_sym approaches the energy of the antisymmetric vibration ν_asym. Crossing to group 13 elements E, the trans-H-E-H vibration ν_sym increasingly drops below ν_asym. This reversal is attributed to the d orbital that participates in the H-M-H bonding but is nonbonding in the H-E-H compounds. DFT calculations are used to probe the energetics of isoelectronic triatomic [H-M-H]ⁿ⁺ and [H-E-H]^n- to reveal this trend and also to demonstrate that the magnitude of these interactions (ν_gap) increases down groups 11, 12, and 14 but remains fairly constant for group 13. They are also used to show that this reversal is seen in the transition state for hydride transfer to CO₂ from the model compounds trans-NiH₂(porphyrin) and trans-EH₂(porphyrin), E = Si and Ge in their singlet states.

Systematic Trends in the Electrochemical Properties of Transition Metal Hydride Complexes Discovered by Using the Ligand Acidity Constant Equation

Understanding the thermodynamics of paramagnetic transition metal hydride complexes, especially of the abundant 3d metals, is important in the design of electrocatalysts and organometallic catalysts. The pK_a^MeCN([MHL_n]⁺/[ML_n) of paramagnetic hydrides in MeCN are estimated for the first time using the ligand acidity constant (LAC) equation where contributions to the pK_a^MeCN from each ligand are simply added together, with the sum corrected for effects of charge and 5d metals. The pK_a^LAC-MeCN([MHL_n]⁺/ML_n) of over 200 hydride complexes MHL_n are used, along with their electrochemical potentials from the literature, in an uncommonly applied thermochemical cycle in order to reveal systematic trends in the redox couples M^III/II and M^V/IV (M = Cr, Mo, W), Mn^II/I, Re^VI/V and Re^IV/III, M^III/II and M^IV/III (M = Fe, Ru, Os), and M^III/II and M^II/I (M = Co, Rh, and Ir) and allow the estimation of the bond dissociation free energies BDFE(MH) of the unoxidized hydrides MHL_n and the prediction of the electrochemical potential for their oxidation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to validate the pK_a^LAC-MeCN values of hydrides of W^III, Mn^II, Fe^III, Ru^III, Co^II, and Ni^III. When a pK_a^LAC-MeCN is less than zero for a given complex [MHL_n]⁺, the oxidation of MHL_n is irreversible due to proton loss from the oxidized complex to the solvent. When pK_a^LAC-MeCN ≫ 0, the oxidation is reversible when there is no gross change in the coordination geometry upon a change in the redox state. Twenty paramagnetic hydrides prepared in bulk all have pK_a^LAC-MeCN > 8.

A One-Step Preparation of Tetradentate Ligands with Nitrogen and Phosphorus Donors by Reductive Amination and Representative Iron Complexes

The synthesis and use of the first examples of unsymmetrical, mixed phosphine donor tripodal NPP₂' ligands N(CH₂CH₂PR₂)₂(CH₂CH₂PPh₂) are presented. The ligands are synthesized via a convenient, one pot reductive amination using 2-(diphenylphosphino)ethylamine and various substituted phosphonium dimers in order to introduce mixed phosphine donors substituted with P/P', those being Ph/Cy (2), Ph/ⁱPr (3), Ph/ⁱBu (4), Ph/o-Tol (5), and Ph/p-Tol (6). Additionally, we have developed the first known synthesis of a symmetrical tripodal NP₃ ligand N(CH₂CH₂PiBu₂)₃ using bench safe ammonium acetate as the lone nitrogen source (7). This new protocol eliminates the use of extremely dangerous nitrogen mustard reagents typically required to synthesize NP₃ ligands. Some of these tetradentate ligands and also P₂NN' ligands N(CH₂-o-C₅H₄N)(CH₂CH₂PR₂)₂ (P₂NN'-Cy, R = Cy; P₂NN'-Ph, R = Ph) prepared by reductive amination using 2-picolylamine are used in the synthesis and reactions of iron complexes. FeCl₂(P₂NN'-Cy) (8) undergoes single halide abstraction with NaBPh₄ to give the trigonal bipyramidal complex [FeCl(P₂NN'-Cy)][BPh₄] (9). Upon exposure to CO(g), complex 9 readily coordinates CO giving [FeCl(P₂NN'-Cy)(CO)][BPh₄] (10), and further treatment with an excess of NaBH₄ results in formation of the hydride complex [Fe(H)(P₂NN'-Cy)(CO)][BPh₄] (11). Our previously reported complex FeCl₂(P₂NN'-Ph) undergoes double halide abstraction with NaBPh₄ in the presence of the coordinating solvent to give [Fe(NCMe)₂(P₂NN'-Ph)][BPh₄]₂ (12). Ligand 3 can be coordinated to FeCl₂, and upon sequential halide abstraction, treatment with NaBH₄, and exposure to an atmosphere of dinitrogen, the dinitrogen hydride complex [Fe(H)(NPP₂'-ⁱPr)(N₂)][BPh₄] (13) is isolated. Our symmetrical NP₃ ligand 7 can also be coordinated to FeCl₂ and, upon exposure to an atmosphere of CO(g), selectively forms [FeCl(NP₃)(CO)][BPh₄] (14) after salt metathesis with NaBPh₄. Complex 14 can be treated with an excess of NaBH₄ to give the hydride complex [Fe(H)(NP₃)(CO)][BPh₄] (15), which can further be deprotonated/reduced to the Fe(0) complex Fe(NP₃)(CO) (16) upon treatment with an excess of KH.

Formation of Iridium(III) Complexes via Selective Activation of the C-H and N-H Bonds of a Dipyridylpyrrole Ligand

Treatment of [Ir(PPh₃)₃Cl] with 2-[5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl]pyridine (Hdpp) in refluxing toluene affords an unexpected pyrrole-metalated iridium(III) hydride complex, [Ir(K²_C,N-dpp)(H)(Cl)(PPh₃)₂] (1), via C_pyrrole-H activation, while the presence of the base KO^tBu as the deprotonation reagent produces a pyridine-metalated iridium(III) hydride complex, [Ir(K³_C,N,N-dpp)(H)(PPh₃)₂] (2), via C_pyridine-H activation. Treatment of [Ir(PPh₃)₃Cl] prepared by a convenient method with Hdpp in the presence of KO^tBu under the refluxing mixture solvent toluene/methanol (2:1, v/v) generates the N,N-chelating complex [Ir(K²_N,N-dpp)(H)(Cl)(PPh₃)₂] (3) together with 1 and the N,N-chelating dihydride complex [Ir(K²_N,N-dpp)(H)₂(PPh₃)₂] (4). Complex 4 is also readily produced by the reaction of [Ir(PPh₃)₃Cl] and Hdpp in the presence of KO^tBu under refluxing methanol or by the reaction of IrCl₃ and PPh₃ in refluxing 2-ethoxyethanol. Complexes 1-4 are fully characterized by NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The dpp^-/dpp^2- ligand shows rich coordination capability, of which pyridine- and pyrrole-cyclometalated coordination modes are first reported. The formation of structural isomers 1 and 3 involved the selective activation of the C-H and N-H bonds of Hdpp is rationalized by theoretical calculations.
