Electronic, Magnetic, and Theoretical Characterization of (NH4)4UF8, a Simple Molecular Uranium(IV) Fluoride

Charge Transport and Photoconductivity in a Hybrid Uranium(IV) Halide Perovskite

Hybrid metal halide perovskites are extensively synthesized using p- and d-elements. However, the properties of hybrid halide perovskites involving 5f-elements are still elusive. Herein, we first report the semiconductive property of a uranium-bearing hybrid halide perovskite, [N(C₂H₅)₄]₂UCl₆ (EAUCl). Single crystal X-ray crystallography demonstrates that EAUCl adopts a zero-dimensional molecular structure consisting of isolated [UCl₆]^2- anions and organic cations. The intrinsically semiconductive property endows EAUCl with obvious charge transport and photoconductivity, with a high carrier mobility lifetime (μτ) product of 9.91 × 10^-4 cm²/V and a photocurrent on-off ratio of 380 under X-ray excitation. Theoretical calculations corroborate that the U 5f orbitals are involved in electron transitions and the formation of band structure.

Transuranium Sulfide via the Boron Chalcogen Mixture Method and Reversible Water Uptake in the NaCuTS3 Family

The behavior of 5f electrons in soft ligand environments makes actinides, and especially transuranium chalcogenides, an intriguing class of materials for fundamental studies. Due to the affinity of actinides for oxygen, however, it is a challenge to synthesize actinide chalcogenides using non-metallic reagents. Using the boron chalcogen mixture method, we achieved the synthesis of the transuranium sulfide NaCuNpS₃ starting from the oxide reagent, NpO₂. Via the same synthetic route, the isostructural composition of NaCuUS₃ was synthesized and the material contrasted with NaCuNpS₃. Single crystals of the U-analogue, NaCuUS₃, were found to undergo an unexpected reversible hydration process to form NaCuUS₃·xH₂O (x ≈ 1.5). A large combination of techniques was used to fully characterize the structure, hydration process, and electronic structures, specifically a combination of single crystal, powder, high temperature powder X-ray diffraction, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, infrared, and inductively coupled plasma spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis, and density functional theory calculations. The outcome of these analyses enabled us to determine the composition of NaCuUS₃·xH₂O and obtain a structural model that demonstrated the retention of the local structure within the [CuUS₃]^- layers throughout the hydration-dehydration process. Band structure, density of states, and Bader charge calculations for NaCuUS₃, NaCuUS₃·xH₂O, and NaCuNpS₃ along with X-ray absorption near edge structure, UV-vis-NIR, and work function measurements on ACuUS₃ (A = Na, K, and Rb) and NaCuUS₃·xH₂O samples were carried out to demonstrate that electronic properties arise from the [CuTS₃]^- layers and show surprisingly little dependence on the interlayer distance.

Tuning the Kinetic Inertness of Bi3+ Complexes: The Impact of Donor Atoms on Diaza-18-Crown-6 Ligands as Chelators for 213Bi Targeted Alpha Therapy

The radionuclide ²¹³Bi can be applied for targeted α therapy (TAT): a type of nuclear medicine that harnesses α particles to eradicate cancer cells. To use this radionuclide for this application, a bifunctional chelator (BFC) is needed to attach it to a biological targeting vector that can deliver it selectively to cancer cells. Here, we investigated six macrocyclic ligands as potential BFCs, fully characterizing the Bi³⁺ complexes by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Solid-state structures of three complexes revealed distorted coordination geometries about the Bi³⁺ center arising from the stereochemically active 6s² lone pair. The kinetic properties of the Bi³⁺ complexes were assessed by challenging them with a 1000-fold excess of the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA). The most kinetically inert complexes contained the most basic pendent donors. Density functional theory (DFT) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) calculations were employed to investigate this trend, suggesting that the kinetic inertness is not correlated with the extent of the 6s² lone pair stereochemical activity, but with the extent of covalency between pendent donors. Lastly, radiolabeling studies of ²¹³Bi (30-210 kBq) with three of the most promising ligands showed rapid formation of the radiolabeled complexes at room temperature within 8 min for ligand concentrations as low as 10^-7 M, corresponding to radiochemical yields of >80%, thereby demonstrating the promise of this ligand class for use in ²¹³Bi TAT.

Interacting Quantum Atoms-A Review

The aim of this review is threefold. On the one hand, we intend it to serve as a gentle introduction to the Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) methodology for those unfamiliar with it. Second, we expect it to act as an up-to-date reference of recent developments related to IQA. Finally, we want it to highlight a non-exhaustive, yet representative set of showcase examples about how to use IQA to shed light in different chemical problems. To accomplish this, we start by providing a brief context to justify the development of IQA as a real space alternative to other existent energy partition schemes of the non-relativistic energy of molecules. We then introduce a self-contained algebraic derivation of the methodological IQA ecosystem as well as an overview of how these formulations vary with the level of theory employed to obtain the molecular wavefunction upon which the IQA procedure relies. Finally, we review the several applications of IQA as examined by different research groups worldwide to investigate a wide variety of chemical problems.

Examination of Molten Salt Reactor Relevant Elements Using Hydrothermal Synthesis

The structural chemistry of elements relevant to the FLiBe molten salt reactor, Th, U, Np, and Zr, including Ce and Nd (as analogues for Pu and Am, respectively), have been examined using hydrothermal synthesis at 200 °C. These reactions serve to model the reaction of molten salts under hydrolysis conditions. The results show that U and Np formed LiAnF₅, while Ce formed Li₄CeF₈. The source of U also controlled the crystal quality, where UO₂ gave small crystals, while UO₃·2H₂O gave very large crystals. It is likely that Be incorporation was not observed because of the high solubility of [BeF₄]^2- in water. Zr formed a third product, Li₆BeF₄ZrF₈, which features isolated [BeF₄]^2- and [ZrF₈]^4- units bridged by Li⁺. Additionally, Li₂BeF₄ was regularly isolated. When little to no alkali metal was included in the reaction, M₃F₁₂(H₂O) was isolated for Np, U, and Ce.

Probing a variation of the inverse-trans-influence in americium and lanthanide tribromide tris(tricyclohexylphosphine oxide) complexes

The synthesis, characterization, and theoretical analysis of meridional americium tribromide tris(tricyclohexylphosphine oxide), mer-AmBr3(OPcy3)3, has been achieved and is compared with its early lanthanide (La to Nd) analogs. The data show that homo trans ligands display significantly shorter bonds than the cis or hetero trans ligands. This is particularly pronounced in the americium compound. DFT along with multiconfigurational CASSCF calculations show that the contraction of the bonds relates qualitatively with overall covalency, i.e. americium shows the most covalent interactions compared to lanthanides. However, the involvement of the 5p and 6p shells in bonding follows a different order, namely cerium > neodymium ∼ americium. This study provides further insight into the mechanisms by which ITI operates in low-valent f-block complexes.

Unexpected Roles of Alkali-Metal Cations in the Assembly of Low-Valent Uranium Sulfate Molecular Complexes

The directing effect of coordinating ligands in the formation of uranium molecular complexes has been well established, but the role of counterions in metal-ligand interactions remains ambiguous and requires further investigation. In this work, we describe the targeted isolation, through the choice of alkali-metal ions, of a family of tetravalent uranium sulfates, showing the influence of the overall topology and, unexpectedly, the U^IV nuclearity upon the inclusion of such countercations. Analyses of the structures of uranium(IV) oxo/hydroxosulfate oligomeric species isolated from consistent synthetic conditions reveal that the incorporation of Na⁺ and Rb⁺ promotes the crystallization of 0D discrete clusters with a hexanuclear [U₆O₄(OH)₄(H₂O)₄]¹²⁺ core, whereas the larger Cs⁺ ion allows for the isolation of a 2D-layered oligomer with a less condensed trinuclear [U₃(O)]¹⁰⁺ center. This finding expands the prevalent view that counterions play an innocent role in molecular complex synthesis, affecting only the overall packing but not the local oligomerization. Interestingly, trends in nuclearity appear to correlate with the hydration enthalpies of alkali-metal cations, such that the alkali-metal cations with larger hydration enthalpies correspond to more hydrated complexes and cluster cores. These findings afford new insights into the mechanism of nucleation of U^IV, and they also open a new path for the rational design and synthesis of targeted molecular complexes.

Structure, Spectroscopy, and Theoretical Analysis of Zero- and Three-Dimensional Lithium Plutonium Fluorides: Li4PuF8 and LiPuF5

The reaction of ²⁴²PuO₂ with HF and LiF under hydrothermal conditions results in the formation of Li₄PuF₈ and LiPuF₅. These compounds were structurally characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and UV-vis-near-IR absorption spectroscopy was employed to confirm the oxidation state of the plutonium in the compounds as 4+. The structure of Li₄PuF₈ consists of [PuF₈]^4- anions that adopt a bicapped trigonal-prismatic geometry with approximate C_2v symmetry. These molecules are bridged by Li⁺ cations. In contrast, LiPuF₅ forms a dense three-dimensional network constructed from [PuF₉]^5- units that are bridged by F^- anions. The Pu⁴⁺ cations are found within tricapped trigonal prisms. Extensive theoretical analysis of the electronic and bonding interactions is included with a comparison between the results derived from complete-active-space self-consistent-field at different levels of theory, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, interacting quantum atom, natural localized molecular orbital, and Wiberg bond order analyses. Covalent interactions in these compounds are examined, and intramolecular trends in covalent and electrostatic interactions are discussed.
