In Situ Formation of Homogeneous Tellurium Nanodots in Paclitaxel-Loaded MgAl Layered Double Hydroxide Gated Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Synergistic Chemo/PDT/PTT Trimode Combinatorial Therapy

Injectable Thermogelling Nanostructured Ink as Simultaneous Optical and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Contrast Agent for Image-Guided Surgery

The development of efficient and biocompatible contrast agents is particularly urgent for modern clinical surgery. Nanostructured materials raised great interest as contrast agents for different imaging techniques, for which essential features are high contrasts, and in the case of precise clinical surgery, minimization of the signal spatial dispersion when embedded in biological tissues. This study deals with the development of a multimodal contrast agent based on an injectable hydrogel nanocomposite containing a lanthanide-activated layered double hydroxide coupled to a biocompatible dye (indocyanine green), emitting in the first biological window. This novel nanostructured thermogelling hydrogel behaves as an efficient tissue marker for optical and magnetic resonance imaging because the particular formulation strongly limits its spatial diffusion in biological tissue by exploiting a simple injection. The synergistic combination of these properties permits to employ the hydrogel ink simultaneously for both optical and magnetic resonance imaging, easy monitoring of the biological target, and, at the same time, increasing the spatial resolution during a clinical surgery. The biocompatibility and excellent performance as contrast agents are very promising for possible use in image-guided surgery, which is currently one of the most challenging topics in clinical research.

Hybridization of layered double hydroxides with functional particles

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of materials with useful properties associated with their anion exchange abilities as well as redox and adsorptive properties for a wide range of applications including adsorbents, catalysts and their supports, electrodes, pigments, ceramic precursors, and drug carriers. In order to satisfy the requirements for each application as well as to find alternative applications, the preparation of LDHs with the desired composition and particle morphology and post-synthetic modification by the host-guest interactions have been examined. In addition, the hybridization of LDHs with various functional particles has been reported to design materials of modified, improved, and multiple functions. In the present article, the preparation, the heterostructure and the application of hybrids containing LDHs as the main component are overviewed.

Advances of Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Materials for Tumor Imaging and Therapy

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are a class of functional anionic clays that typically consist of orthorhombic arrays of metal hydroxides with anions sandwiched between the layers. Due to their unique properties, including high chemical stability, good biocompatibility, controlled drug loading, and enhanced drug bioavailability, LDHs have many potential applications in the medical field. Especially in the fields of bioimaging and tumor therapy. This paper reviews the research progress of LDHs and their nanocomposites in the field of tumor imaging and therapy. First, the structure and advantages of LDH are discussed. Then, several commonly used methods for the preparation of LDH are presented, including co-precipitation, hydrothermal and ion exchange methods. Subsequently, recent advances in layered hydroxides and their nanocomposites for cancer imaging and therapy are highlighted. Finally, based on current research, we summaries the prospects and challenges of layered hydroxides and nanocomposites for cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Toxicity evaluation of silica nanoparticles for delivery applications

Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) are being explored as nanocarriers for therapeutics delivery, which can address a number of intrinsic drawbacks of therapeutics. To translate laboratory innovation into clinical application, their potential toxicity has been of great concern. This review attempts to comprehensively summarize the existing literature on the toxicity assessment of SiNPs. The current data suggest that the composition of SiNPs, their physicochemical properties, their administration route, their frequency and duration of administration, and the sex of animal models are related to their tissue and blood toxicity, immunotoxicity, and genotoxicity. However, the correlation between in vitro and in vivo toxicity has not been well established, mainly because both the in vitro and the in vivo-dosed quantities are unrealistic. This article also discusses important factors to consider in the toxicology of SiNPs and current approaches to reducing their toxicity. The aim is to give readers a better understanding of the toxicology of silica nanoparticles and to help identify key gaps in knowledge and techniques.

Nanoarchitectured two-dimensional layered double hydroxides-based nanocomposites for biomedical applications

Despite the exceptional physicochemical and morphological characteristics, the pristine layered double hydroxides (LDHs), or two-dimensional (2D) hydrotalcite clays, often suffer from various shortcomings in biomedicine, such as deprived thermal and chemical stabilities, acid-prone degradation, as well as lack of targeting ability, hampering their scale-up and subsequent clinical translation. Accordingly, diverse nanocomposites of LDHs have been fabricated by surface coating of organic species, impregnation of inorganic species, and generation of core-shell architectures, resulting in the complex state-of-the-art architectures. In this article, we initially emphasize various bothering limitations and the chemistry of these pristine LDHs, followed by discussions on the engineering strategies of different LDHs-based nanocomposites. Further, we give a detailed note on diverse LDH nanocomposites and their performance efficacy in various biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, tissue engineering and cell patterning, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction, as well as photoluminescence, highlighting the influence of various properties of installed supramolecular assemblies on their performance efficacy. In summary, we conclude with interesting perspectives concerning the lessons learned to date and the strategies to be followed to further advance their scale-up processing and applicability in medicine.

Emerging nanomedicines of paclitaxel for cancer treatment

Malignant tumor is still a leading threat to human health. Despite the rapid development of targeted therapeutic strategies, any treatment specifically acting on single target would inevitably suffer from tumor resistance, largely due to the genetic instability and variability of tumor cells. Thus, traditional therapies such as broad-spectrum chemotherapy would certainly occupy an important position in clinical cancer therapy. Nevertheless, most chemotherapeutic drugs have long been criticized for unsatisfactory therapeutic efficacy with severe off-target toxicity. Although several chemotherapeutic nanomedicines with improved therapeutic safety have been applied in clinics, the therapeutic outcomes still do not fulfill expectation. To address this challenge, enormous efforts have been devoted to developing novel nano-formulations for efficient delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs. Herein, we aim to outline the latest progression in the emerging nanomedicines of paclitaxel (PTX), with special attention to the functional nanocarriers, self-delivering prodrug-nanoassemblies and combination nanotherapeutics of PTX. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of these functional PTX nanomedicines in clinical translation are spotlighted.

Combinatorial Therapeutic Approaches with Nanomaterial-Based Photodynamic Cancer Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), in which a light source is used in combination with a photosensitizer to induce local cell death, has shown great promise in therapeutically targeting primary tumors with negligible toxicity and minimal invasiveness. However, numerous studies have shown that noninvasive PDT alone is not sufficient to completely ablate tumors in deep tissues, due to its inherent shortcomings. Therefore, depending on the characteristics and type of tumor, PDT can be combined with surgery, radiotherapy, immunomodulators, chemotherapy, and/or targeted therapy, preferably in a patient-tailored manner. Nanoparticles are attractive delivery vehicles that can overcome the shortcomings of traditional photosensitizers, as well as enable the codelivery of multiple therapeutic drugs in a spatiotemporally controlled manner. Nanotechnology-based combination strategies have provided inspiration to improve the anticancer effects of PDT. Here, we briefly introduce the mechanism of PDT and summarize the photosensitizers that have been tested preclinically for various cancer types and clinically approved for cancer treatment. Moreover, we discuss the current challenges facing the combination of PDT and multiple cancer treatment options, and we highlight the opportunities of nanoparticle-based PDT in cancer therapies.

Progress in Nanocarriers Codelivery System to Enhance the Anticancer Effect of Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising anticancer noninvasive method and has great potential for clinical applications. Unfortunately, PDT still has many limitations, such as metastatic tumor at unknown sites, inadequate light delivery and a lack of sufficient oxygen. Recent studies have demonstrated that photodynamic therapy in combination with other therapies can enhance anticancer effects. The development of new nanomaterials provides a platform for the codelivery of two or more therapeutic drugs, which is a promising cancer treatment method. The use of multifunctional nanocarriers for the codelivery of two or more drugs can improve physical and chemical properties, increase tumor site aggregation, and enhance the antitumor effect through synergistic actions, which is worthy of further study. This review focuses on the latest research progress on the synergistic enhancement of PDT by simultaneous multidrug administration using codelivery nanocarriers. We introduce the design of codelivery nanocarriers and discuss the mechanism of PDT combined with other antitumor methods. The combination of PDT and chemotherapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, photothermal therapy, hyperthermia, radiotherapy, sonodynamic therapy and even multidrug therapy are discussed to provide a comprehensive understanding.

Current trends in smart mesoporous silica-based nanovehicles for photoactivated cancer therapy

Photoactivated therapeutic strategies (photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy), due to the adjusted therapeutic area, time and light dosage, have prevailed for the fight against tumors. Currently, the monotherapy with limited treatment effect and undesired side effects is gradually replaced by multimodal and multifunctional nanosystems. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with unique physicochemical advantages, such as huge specific surface area, controllable pore size and morphology, functionalized modification, satisfying biocompatibility and biodegradability, are considered as promising candidates for multimodal photoactivated cancer therapy. Excitingly, the innovative nanoplatforms based on the mesoporous silica nanoparticles provide more and more effective treatment strategies and display excellent antitumor potential. Given the rapid development of antitumor strategies based on MSNs, this review summarizes the current progress in MSNs-based photoactivated cancer therapy, mainly consists of (1) photothermal therapy-related theranostics; (2) photodynamic therapy-related theranostics; (3) multimodal synergistic therapy, such as chemo-photothermal-photodynamic therapy, phototherapy-immunotherapy and phototherapy-radio therapy. Based on the limited penetration of irradiation light in photoactivated therapy, the challenges faced by deep-seated tumor therapy are fully discussed, and future clinical translation of MSNs-based photoactivated cancer therapy are highlighted.

Inorganic nanomaterials with rapid clearance for biomedical applications

Inorganic nanomaterials that have inherently exceptional physicochemical properties (e.g., catalytic, optical, thermal, electrical, or magnetic performance) that can provide desirable functionality (e.g., drug delivery, diagnostics, imaging, or therapy) have considerable potential for application in the field of biomedicine. However, toxicity can be caused by the long-term, non-specific accumulation of these inorganic nanomaterials in healthy tissues, preventing their large-scale clinical utilization. Over the past several decades, the emergence of biodegradable and clearable inorganic nanomaterials has offered the potential to prevent such long-term toxicity. In addition, a comprehensive understanding of the design of such nanomaterials and their metabolic pathways within the body is essential for enabling the expansion of theranostic applications for various diseases and advancing clinical trials. Thus, it is of critical importance to develop biodegradable and clearable inorganic nanomaterials for biomedical applications. This review systematically summarizes the recent progress of biodegradable and clearable inorganic nanomaterials, particularly for application in cancer theranostics and other disease therapies. The future prospects and opportunities in this rapidly growing biomedical field are also discussed. We believe that this timely and comprehensive review will stimulate and guide additional in-depth studies in the area of inorganic nanomedicine, as rapid in vivo clearance and degradation is likely to be a prerequisite for the future clinical translation of inorganic nanomaterials with unique properties and functionality.

Emerging nanotaxanes for cancer therapy

The clinical application of taxane (including paclitaxel, docetaxel, and cabazitaxel)-based formulations is significantly impeded by their off-target distribution, unsatisfactory release, and acquired resistance/metastasis. Recent decades have witnessed a dramatic progress in the development of high-efficiency, low-toxicity nanotaxanes via the use of novel biomaterials and nanoparticulate drug delivery systems (nano-DDSs). Thus, in this review, the achievements of nanotaxanes-targeted delivery and stimuli-responsive nano-DDSs-in preclinical or clinical trials have been outlined. Then, emerging nanotherapeutics against tumor resistance and metastasis have been overviewed, with a particular emphasis on synergistic therapy strategies (e.g., combination with surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, gas therapy, phototherapy, and multitherapy). Finally, the latest oral nanotaxanes have been briefly discussed.

Inorganic-inorganic nanohybrids for drug delivery, imaging and photo-therapy: recent developments and future scope

Advanced nanotechnology has been emerging rapidly in terms of novel hybrid nanomaterials that have found various applications in day-to-day life for the betterment of the public. Specifically, gold, iron, silica, hydroxy apatite, and layered double hydroxide based nanohybrids have shown tremendous progress in biomedical applications, including bio-imaging, therapeutic delivery and photothermal/dynamic therapy. Moreover, recent progress in up-conversion nanohybrid materials is also notable because they have excellent NIR imaging capability along with therapeutic benefits which would be useful for treating deep-rooted tumor tissues. Our present review highlights recent developments in inorganic-inorganic nanohybrids, and their applications in bio-imaging, drug delivery, and photo-therapy. In addition, their future scope is also discussed in detail.

Design and characterization of a novel pH-sensitive biocompatible and multifunctional nanocarrier for in vitro paclitaxel release

Breast cancer is one of the main reasons of women's mortality. A novel ternary combination of ZnAl-layered double hydroxides (LDH), cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) and N-graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) proposes a pH-sensitive multifunctional nanocomposite that can improve therapeutic features of each compound; this is a notable strategy to make biocompatible materials with unique properties for paclitaxel (PTX) delivery in breast cancer cells. For proving the surface modification process of materials, electrochemical techniques including cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were carried out. By coating PEG on the surface of the N-GQDs/CoFe₂O₄/LDH, it developed a drug delivery system with low toxicity, an excellent encapsulation efficiency 88.4%, drug loading capacity of ca. 31%, and slow and sustained release behavior (9% after 72 h) under normal physiological conditions. Besides, a high drug release (~69%) at low-pH as a model of the extracellular tumor environment indicated a pH-sensitive release behavior. Moreover, cell viability assay proved the negligible cytotoxicity on normal cells (L929) and the improved growth inhibition effect of PTX/N-GQDs/CoFe₂O₄/LDH nanocarrier on MCF7 cancer cells. Blood compatibility test values with respect to red blood cell aggregation (RBC), coagulation prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and complement activation (C3 and C4 levels) remained within normal ranges without toxicity effect on RBCs and complement factors. Overall, this novel designed PTX/N-GQDs/CoFe₂O₄/LDH nanocarrier with tremendously biocompatible, slow-release and pH-dependent features could be considered as a theranostic candidate for various anticancer drugs delivery and cancer therapy.

In vitro cytotoxicity studies of smart pH-sensitive lamivudine-loaded CaAl-LDH magnetic nanoparticles against Mel-Rm and A-549 cancer cells

In this study, an effective nano-drug delivery system was prepared by the co-precipitation method via two steps; the preparation of Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles and its surface modification with layered double hydroxide (LDH) and loading lamivudine on this nanocarrier (Fe₃O₄@CaAl-LDH@Lamivudine). The developed nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometry, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. The prepared system demonstrated an average size of 130 nm. Also, the drug entrapment efficiency was estimated at ∼70%. In vitro, drug release investigations showed a controlled and pH-dependent lamivudine release over 300 min. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of Fe₃O₄@CaAl-LDH@Lamivudine NPs was explored against Mel-Rm and A-549 cancer cell lines in comparison with lamivudine and nanocarrier using lactate dehydrogenase colorimetric and MTT assay. The results of the MTT assay revealed that the Fe₃O₄@CaAl-LDH@Lamivudine NPs significantly inhibited the proliferation of Mel-Rm and A-549 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The influences of Fe₃O₄@CaAl-LDH@Lamivudine on the cancer cell lines by different therapeutic investigation illustrated the remarkable effect in comparison with free drug. Finally, the achieved consequences confirm the anticancer properties of Fe₃O₄@CaAl-LDH@Lamivudine and indicate that they may be a cost-effective substitute in the treatment of lung and skin cancer.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Layered double hydroxide nanostructures and nanocomposites for biomedical applications

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanostructures and related nanocomposites have attracted significant interest in biomedical applications including cancer therapy, bioimaging and antibacterial treatment. These materials hold great advantages including low cost and facile preparation, convenient drug loading, high drug incorporation capacity, good biocompatibility, efficient intracellular uptake and endosome/lysosome escape, and natural biodegradability in an acidic environment. In this review, we summarize the development of three types of LDH nanostructures including pristine LDH, surface modified LDH, and LDH nanocomposites for a range of biomedical applications. The advantages and disadvantages of LDH nanostructures and insights into the future development are also discussed.

Ultralow-intensity near infrared light synchronously activated collaborative chemo/photothermal/photodynamic therapy

Although combined chemotherapy (Chemo), photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) in cancer therapy has drawn significant attention due to its superior anticancer ability, the required high intensity of irradiation results in serious photo-toxicity to healthy neighboring cells, and thus limits its biomedical applications. Herein, we developed an ultralow-intensity near infrared (NIR) light synchronously activated collaborative Chemo/PTT/PDT nanoplatform. The nanoplatform is composed of a highly emissive upconversion (UC) core, chlorin e6 (Ce6) photosensitizer and the anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) co-loaded in a mesoporous silica (MS) shell, and polyethylene glycol-modified graphene (PGO) acts as both the photothermal reagent and smart switch for promoted drug release. Upon 808 nm NIR light exposure with ultralow intensity (0.25 W cm-2), which is below the maximum permissible exposure (MPE, 0.33 W cm-2) for skin, the mild hyperpyrexia of PGO induced both cancer cell irreversible death for PTT and greatly promoted drug release for enhanced Chemo. On the other hand, the upconverted 660 nm light from UC activated Ce6 to generate reactive oxygen species for PDT, while the upconverted 540 nm light from UC could be employed for visualizing the treatment process. The in vitro and in vivo anticancer experiments demonstrate that the ultralow-intensity NIR light synchronously activated Chemo/PTT/PDT nanoplatform exhibits remarkable therapeutic efficacy with minimal photodamage.

Engineering Mono-Chalcogen Nanomaterials for Omnipotent Anticancer Applications: Progress and Challenges

Belonging to the chalcogen group, the elements selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) are located in Group VI-A of the periodic table. Zero-valent nanodimensioned Se (nano-Se) and Te (nano-Te) have displayed important biomedical applications in recent years. The past two decades have witnessed an explosion in novel cancer treatment strategies using nano-Se and nano-Te as aggressive weapons against tumors. Indeed, they are both inorganic nanomedicines that suppress tumor cell proliferation, diffusion, and metastasis. Abundant synthesis strategies for rational and precise surface decoration of nano-Se and nano-Te make them significant players in resisting cancers by means of powerful multi-modal treatment methods. This review focuses on the design and engineering of nano-Se- and nano-Te-based nanodelivery systems and their precise uses in cancer treatment. The corresponding anticancer molecular mechanisms of nano-Se and nano-Te are discussed in detail. Given their different photo-induced behaviors, the presence or absence of near infrared illumination is used as a defining characteristic when describing the anticancer applications of nano-Se and nano-Te. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of nano-Se and nano-Te are summarized and highlighted.

Width-Consistent Mesoporous Silica Nanorods with a Precisely Controlled Aspect Ratio for Lysosome Dysfunctional Synergistic Chemotherapy/Photothermal Therapy/Starvation Therapy/Oxidative Therapy

Although differently shaped mesoporous silica is widely studied, the formation of width-consistent mesoporous silica nanorods (MSNRs) with a precisely controlled aspect ratio (AR: length/width) is challenging and has not been reported. Herein, width-consistent (100 nm) MSNRs with ARs of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 were obtained by increasing the concentrations while maintaining the molar ratio of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The results demonstrated that the as-prepared MSNR with an AR of 6 (AR6) possesses high cellular-uptake efficiency and drug-loading capacity. Thus, AR6-based cancer-cell-targeting nanosystems were designed. These nanosystems encapsulated doxorubicin (DOX) into the porous channel of AR6, adsorbed glucose oxidase (GOx), and then formed a polydopamine (PDA) layer for Siramesine (Siram, a lysosome dysfunctional drug) adsorption and folic acid modification. In this design, the PDA shell could prevent the leakage of loading components and keep the activity of GOx during delivery while achieving an on-demand drug release in the targeted location and photothermal therapy under near-infrared irradiation. The increase in temperature was highly beneficial for elevating the catalytic efficiency of GOx, accelerating the consumption of intracellular glucose, and generating a relatively high level of cytotoxic H₂O₂, all of which enhanced starvation and oxidative therapies. Siram was employed to inhibit lysosomal metabolism and accompany GOx to reach a dual-enhanced starvation therapy effect. In addition, DOX entered the nucleus and altered DNA for chemotherapy. The results showed that the nanosystems have superior therapeutic efficacy against cancer cells and not much toxicity to normal cells. Therefore, this study provides a novel strategy for lysosome dysfunctional synergistic chemotherapy/photothermal therapy/starvation therapy/oxidative therapy based on MSNR.

New Targeted Gold Nanorods for the Treatment of Glioblastoma by Photodynamic Therapy

This study describes the employment of gold nanorods (AuNRs), known for their good reputation in hyperthermia-based cancer therapy, in a hybrid combination of photosensitizers (PS) and peptides (PP). We report here, the design and the synthesis of this nanosystem and its application as a vehicle for the selective drug delivery and the efficient photodynamic therapy (PDT). AuNRs were functionalized by polyethylene glycol, phototoxic pyropheophorbide-a (Pyro) PS, and a "KDKPPR" peptide moiety to target neuropilin-1 receptor (NRP-1). The physicochemical characteristics of AuNRs, the synthesized peptide and the intermediate PP-PS conjugates were investigated. The photophysical properties of the hybrid AuNRs revealed that upon conjugation, the AuNRs acquired the characteristic properties of Pyro concerning the extension of the absorption profile and the capability to fluoresce (Φf = 0.3) and emit singlet oxygen (ΦΔ = 0.4) when excited at 412 nm. Even after being conjugated onto the surface of the AuNRs, the molecular affinity of "KDKPPR" for NRP-1 was preserved. Under irradiation at 652 nm, in vitro assays were conducted on glioblastoma U87 cells incubated with different PS concentrations of free Pyro, intermediate PP-PS conjugate and hybrid AuNRs. The AuNRs showed no cytotoxicity in the absence of light even at high PS concentrations. However, they efficiently decreased the cell viability by 67% under light exposure. This nanosystem possesses good efficiency in PDT and an expected potential effect in a combined photodynamic/photothermal therapy guided by NIR fluorescence imaging of the tumors due to the presence of both the hyperthermic agent, AuNRs, and the fluorescent active phototoxic PS.

Solvent-Mediated and Mechanochemical Methods for Anion Exchange of Carbonate from Layered Double Hydroxides Using Ammonium Salts

Deintercalation of carbonate from layered double hydroxides (LDH) followed by intercalation of another anion (decarbonative intercalation) is a good method for the synthesis of crystalline LDH with different intercalated anions. We have carried out decarbonative intercalation of halides, nitrate, acetate, and sulfate by refluxing the carbonate-LDH with the corresponding ammonium salt in 1-butanol to obtain ordered LDH incorporating the desired anion. The crystallinity of the precursor LDH is retained in the anion-exchanged products, making this reaction a useful tool to prepare ordered LDH containing various anions. In addition, the morphology of the LDH is also retained after the exchange, making the reaction morphotactic. As the reaction is facilitated by the weak acidity of the ammonium salt, just grinding the carbonate-LDH with the ammonium salt of the desired anion also results in anion exchange. However, while the crystallinity of the LDH is retained, the morphology changes possibly due to breaking up of the crystals during the reaction.

Theranostic Nanomedicine Carrying L-Menthol and Near-Infrared Dye for Multimodal Imaging-Guided Photothermal Therapy of Cancer

Photothermal therapy (PTT) as an emerging technique for cancer treatment has drawn great attention owing to its minimally invasive nature. However, it is difficult to achieve a complete tumor regression due to the heterogeneous heat distribution over the tumor. Application of photothermal conversion agents may enhance PTT efficiency, and a multifunctional imaging may provide guidance for the implementation of PTT. Herein, an L-menthol/IR-780 loaded liposome (MIL) is prepared to achieve NIR-triggered cavitation for enhancing photothermal ablation. The synthesized MIL possesses outstanding colloidal stability and photoacoustic/near infrared fluorescence/ultrasound (PA/NIRF/US) imaging contrast to offer multimodal imaging-guided photothermal therapy of cancer. Upon irradiation, the IR-780 acts as the photoabsorber to convert NIR light into heat energy. More importantly, the produced hyperthermia can not only induce ablation of tumor cells but also trigger vaporization and bubbling of encapsulated L-menthol (menthol). Consequently, the generated menthol bubbles obviously enhance the US imaging signal and promote photothermal ablation of the tumor.

Layered Double Hydroxides: A Toolbox for Chemistry and Biology

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are an emergent class of biocompatible inorganic lamellar nanomaterials that have attracted significant research interest owing to their high surface-to-volume ratio, the capability to accumulate specific molecules, and the timely release to targets. Their unique properties have been employed for applications in organic catalysis, photocatalysis, sensors, drug delivery, and cell biology. Given the widespread contemporary interest in these topics, time-to-time it urges to review the recent progresses. This review aims to summarize the most recent cutting-edge reports appearing in the last years. It firstly focuses on the application of LDHs as catalysts in relevant chemical reactions and as photocatalysts for organic molecule degradation, water splitting reaction, CO2 conversion, and reduction. Subsequently, the emerging role of these materials in biological applications is discussed, specifically focusing on their use as biosensors, DNA, RNA, and drug delivery, finally elucidating their suitability as contrast agents and for cellular differentiation. Concluding remarks and future prospects deal with future applications of LDHs, encouraging researches in better understanding the fundamental mechanisms involved in catalytic and photocatalytic processes, and the molecular pathways that are activated by the interaction of LDHs with cells in terms of both uptake mechanisms and nanotoxicology effects.
