Determination of the Stability Constants of the Acetate Complexes of the Actinides Am(III), Th(IV), Np(V), and U(VI) Using Capillary Electrophoresis-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Hyphenation of capillary electrophoresis with MC-ICP-MS - A novel tool for uranium age dating

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) was hyphenated to multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) to determine the model age of a highly enriched uranium (HEU) sample using the ²³⁴U/²³⁰Th radiochronometer. The use of hydroxymethylbutyric acid (HMBA) as the CE electrolyte was investigated, and a complexation stacking method was developed to increase the thorium signal obtained. The age of the material was determined by measuring the ²³⁰Th content of the HEU sample using isotope dilution in conjunction with the CE-MC-ICP-MS protocol. The CE-MC-ICP-MS protocol and a standard offline protocol using gravitational chromatography both gave results in accordance within uncertainties with the production date of the HEU sample (March 1965). Liquid waste production was only of a few microliters with the use of CE. The hyphenation of CE with MC-ICP-MS render the measurement of the age of the HEU material in less than one day possible. Obtaining results in a timely fashion is of particular importance for nuclear forensics studies.

Study of Aqueous Am(III)-Aliphatic Dicarboxylate Complexes: Coordination Mode-Dependent Optical Property and Stability Changes

The thermodynamics of Am(III) complex formation in natural groundwater systems is one of the major topics of research in the field of high-level radioactive waste management. In this study, we investigate the absorption and luminescence properties of aqueous Am(III) complexes with a series of aliphatic dicarboxylates in order to learn the thermodynamic complexation behaviors in relation to binding geometries. The formation of Am(III) complexes with these carboxylate ligands induced distinct red shifts in the absorption spectra, which enabled chemical speciation. The formation constants determined by deconvolution of the absorption spectra showed a linear decrease for the three ligands (oxalate (Ox), malonate (Mal), and succinate (Suc)) and a mild decrease for the remaining ligands (glutarate (Glu) and adipate (Adi)). Time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) was used to obtain information about the aqua ligand, which indirectly indicated the bidentate bindings of these dicarboxylate ligands. A complementary attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) study on Eu(III), which is a nonradioactive analogue of Am(III) ion, showed that the coordination modes differ depending on the alkyl chain length. Ox and Mal bind to Am(III) via side-on bidentate bindings with two carboxylate groups, resulting in the formation of stable 5- and 6-membered ring structures, respectively. On the other hand, Suc, Glu, and Adi form end-on bidentate bindings with a single carboxylate group, resulting in a 4-membered ring structure. Density functional theory calculations provided details about the bonding properties and supported the experimentally proposed coordination geometries. This study demonstrates that coordination mode-dependent changes in optical properties occur along with thermodynamic stability changes in Am(III)-dicarboxylate complexes.

Assignment of complex species by affinity capillary electrophoresis: The case of Th(IV)-desferrioxamine B

The electrophoretic mobility change of desferrioxamine B (DFO) was monitored by UV absorption spectrophotometry upon increasing the thorium(IV) concentration in the background electrolyte at two acidities ([HClO₄ ]_Tot = 0.0316 and 0.0100 M). These data enabled to assess the speciation model and to determine the equilibrium constant of [Th(DFO)H₂ ]³⁺ at fixed ionic strength (I = 0.1 M (H,Na)ClO₄ ). Affinity capillary electrophoresis (ACE) turned out to be most helpful in identifying the complexed species by ascertaining its charge and protonation state. The assignment of the correct stoichiometry relied on the reliable estimation of the electrophoretic mobility by assuming similar hydrodynamic radii for (DFO)H₄ ⁺ and the chelate. The value of the apparent equilibrium constant (log β₁₁₂ = 38.7 ± 0.4) obtained by ACE compares favorably well with those reported in the literature for thorium and a range of other metal ions, according to a linear free-energy relationship. This method is useful for studying metal-ligand binding equilibria and provides valuable information for further modelling the behavior of tetravalent actinides under environmental conditions. Structural information about the prevalent solution species in acidic conditions was gained by DFT calculations, confirming the bishydroxamato coordination mode of Th⁴⁺ by the diprotonated ligand.
