Toward Predicting the Assembly of Modular Intermetallics from Chemical Pressure Analysis: The Interface Nucleus Approach

Complex intermetallic phases are often constructed from domains derived from simpler structures arranged into hierarchical assemblies. These modular arrangements offer intriguing prospects, such as the integration of the properties of distinct compounds into a single material or for the emergence of new properties from the interactions among different domains. In this article, we develop a strategy for the design of such complex structures, which we term the interface nucleus approach. Within this framework, the assembly of complex structures is facilitated by interface nuclei: geometrical motifs shared by two parent structures that serve as a region of overlap to nucleate or seed the formation of a combined structure. Our central hypothesis is that the formation of an interface between structures at these motifs creates opportunities for the relief of atomic packing stresses, as revealed by Density Functional Theory-Chemical Pressure (DFT-CP) analysis: when corresponding interatomic contacts in two structures exhibit complementarity─negative CP with positive CP or intense CP with mild CP─the intergrowth allows for a more balanced packing arrangement. To illustrate the application of the interface nucleus concept, we analyze three modular intermetallic structures, the σ-phase (FeCr), PuNi3, and Ca6Cu6Al5 types. In each case, the assembly of the structure can be connected to complementary CP features in an interface nucleus shared by its parent structures, while the distribution of the interface nuclei in the parents serves to template the geometry of the overall framework. In this way, the interface nucleus approach points toward avenues for the design of modular intermetallics from the CP schemes of potential partner structures.

Investigating the A n+1B n X3n+1 Homologous Series: A New Platform for Studying Magnetic Praseodymium Based Intermetallics

The recent discovery of the A _n+1B _n X_3n+1 (A = lanthanide, B = transition metal, X = tetrel) homologous series provides a new platform to study the structure-property relationships of highly correlated electron systems. Several members of Ce _n+1Co _n Ge_3n+1 (n = 1, 4, 5, 6, and ∞) show evidence of heavy electron behavior with complex magnetic interactions. While the Ce analogues have been investigated, only n = 1, 2, and ∞ of Pr _n+1Co _n Ge_3n+1 have been synthesized, with n = 1 and 2 showing a nonsinglet magnetic ground state. The Pr analogues can provide a platform for direct comparison of highly correlated behavior. In this perspective, we discuss the impetus for synthesizing the Pr _n+1Co _n Ge_3n+1 members and present the structural characterization of the n = 3 and n = 4 members. We lay the foundation for future investigations of the Pr _n+1Co _n Ge_3n+1 family of compounds and highlight the importance of complementary methods to characterize new quantum materials.

Buffering Octahedra in Mo4Zr9P: Intergrowth as a Solution to the Frustrated Packing of Tricapped Trigonal Prisms and Icosahedra

Atomic packings based on icosahedra and tricapped trigonal prisms are prone to frustration─indeed, these polyhedra represent common configurations in metallic glasses. In this Article, we illustrate how these packing issues can serve as a driving force for the formation of modular intermetallic structures. Using Density Functional Theory-Chemical Pressure (DFT-CP) analysis, we relate the Hf₉Mo₄B-type structure of Mo₄Zr₉P to interatomic pressures experienced by the atoms in two parent structures: Zr₃P, whose structure is built from tricapped trigonal prisms, and ZrMo₂, a Laves phase containing icosahedra. CP analysis of Zr₃P reveals that it has particularly frustrated packing because of the entangling of its tricapped trigonal prisms. In the ternary phase, the frustration is significantly relieved as the units become isolated from each other. Further analysis points to the stabilizing effect of a face-sharing network of octahedra in Mo₄Zr₉P that largely separates the structure into Zr-Mo and Zr-P domains and serves as a buffering region for the relaxation of interatomic distances. These conclusions are generalized to the broader members of this structure type with the examination of the CP schemes for the isostructural Mo₄Zr₉B, Al₅Co₂, and Mg₅Pd₂ phases. Finally, we screen the structural literature using the ToposPro software to identify three additional structure types that have similar intergrowth patterns: the Dy₄CoCd, La₂₃Ni₇Mg₄, and Gd₁₄Co₃In₃ types. An analysis of the interatomic distances within the octahedral networks of these structures suggests that these networks commonly facilitate the reconciliation of packing incompatibilities in intermetallic chemistry.

Fantastic n = 4: Ce5Co4+xGe13-ySny of the An+1MnX3n+1 homologous series

Ce-based intermetallics are of interest due to the potential to study the interplay of localized magnetic moments and conduction electrons. Our work on Ce-based germanides led to the identification of a new homologous series A_n+1M_nX_3n+1 (A = rare earth, M = transition metal, X = tetrels, and n = 1-6). This work presents the single-crystal growth, structure determination, and anisotropic magnetic properties of the n = 4 member of the Ce_n+1Co_nGe_3n+1 homologous series. Ce₅Co_4+xGe_13-ySn_y consists of three Ce sites, three Co sites, seven Ge sites, and two Sn sites, and the crystal structure is best modeled in the orthorhombic space group Cmmm where a = 4.3031(8) Å, b = 45.608(13) Å, and c = 4.3264(8) Å, which is in close agreement with the previously reported Sn-free analog where a = 4.265(1) Å, b = 45.175(9) Å, and c = 4.293(3) Å. Anisotropic magnetic measurements show Kondo-like behavior and three magnetic transitions at 6, 4.9, and 2.4 K for Ce₅Co_4+xGe_13-ySn_y.

Exploration of Multi-Component Vanadium and Titanium Pnictides Using Flux Growth and Conventional High-Temperature Methods

The flux growth method was successfully employed to synthesize millimeter-sized single crystals of the ternary barium vanadium pnictides Ba₅V₁₂As_19+x (x ≈ 0.02) and Ba₅V₁₂Sb_19+x (x ≈ 0.36), using molten Pb and Sb, respectively. Both compositions crystallize in space group P 4 ¯ 3m and adopt a structure similar to those of the barium titanium pnictides Ba₅Ti₁₂ Pn _19+x (Pn = Sb, Bi), yet with a subtly different disorder, involving the pnictogen and barium atoms. Attempts to obtain an arsenide analog of Ba₅Ti₁₂ Pn _19+x using a Pb flux technique yielded binary arsenides. High-temperature treatment of the elements Ba, Ti, and As in Nb or Ta tubes resulted in side reactions with the crucible materials and produced two isostructural compositions Ba₈Ti_13-x M _x As₂₁ (M = Nb, Ta; x ≈ 4), representing a new structure type. The latter structure displays fcc-type metal clusters comprised of statistically distributed Ti and M atoms (M = Nb, Ta) with multi-center and two-center bonding within the clusters, as suggested by our first-principle calculations.
