Abstract
Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) released from reactors possesses significant radioactivity, heat release properties, and high-value radioactive nuclides. Therefore, using chemical methods for reprocessing can enhance economic efficiency and reduce the potential environmental risks of nuclear energy. Due to the presence of relatively diffuse f-electrons, the chemical properties of trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)) and actinides (An(III)) in SNF solutions are quite similar. Separation methods have several limitations, including poor separation efficiency and the need for multiple stripping agents. The use of novel multi-dental phenanthroline-derived extractants with nitrogen donor atoms to effectively separate An(III) over Ln(III) has been widely accepted. This review first introduces the development history of phenanthroline-derived extractants for extraction and complexation with An(III) over Ln(III). Then, based on structural differences, these extractants are classified into four categories: nitrogen-coordinated, N,O-hybrid coordinated, highly preorganized structure, and unsymmetric structure. Each category's design principles, extraction, and separation performance as well as their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Finally, we have summarized and compared the unique characteristics of the existing extractants and provided an outlook. This work may offer a reliable reference for the precise identification and selective separation between An(III) and Ln(III), and point the way for future development and exploration.

Abstract
According to the green development requirements of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, the effective separation of lanthanides and actinides is one of the key factors for nuclear energy to become a sustainable energy source. In recent years, o-phenanthroline-based ligands have been proven to be effective in the separation of lanthanides and actinides. In this work, based on 5,9b-dihydro-4aH-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b']dipyridines, we designed six N-heterocyclic ring ligands and theoretically studied their extraction capacity and separation selectivity for the Am(III) and Eu(III) ions. Various theoretical methods were used to analyze the properties of the ligands and study the bonding nature of the ligands with the metal ions. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated to measure the extraction ability of the ligands to the metal ions and to explore the separation capacity of the ligand for the Am(III) and Eu(III) ions. The calculated results show that the five- and six-membered N-heterocyclic ring side chains of the ligands and the distribution of the N atoms on the side chain rings have obvious effects on the bonding of the ligands to metal ions and on the extraction and separation properties of the ligands for the metal ions. It was found that the extractants with six-membered ring side chains possess an extraction ability slightly better than that of the ligands with five-membered ring side chains and that the ligands with a pair of adjacent N atoms on the side chains have a stronger separation selectivity for the Am(III)/Eu(III) ions. The theoretical research in this work will help to understand the details of binding and extraction properties of similar ligands and provide insights for the future design of five- and six-membered heterocyclic ligands.

Abstract
During the PUREX process, the separation between U(VI) and Pu(IV) is achieved by reducing Pu(IV) to Pu(III), which is complicated and energy-consuming. To address this issue, we report here the first case of separation of U(VI) from Pu(IV) by o-phenanthroline diamide ligands under high acidity. Two new o-phenanthroline diamide ligands (1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)bis(indolin-1-ylmethanone) (L1) and (1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)bis((2-methylindolin-1-yl)methanone) (L2) were synthesized, which can effectively separate U(VI) from Pu(IV) even at 4 mol/L HNO3. The highest separation factor of U(VI) and Pu(IV) can reach over 1000, setting a new record for the separation of U(VI) from Pu(IV) under high acidity. Furthermore, extracted U(VI) can be easily recovered with water or dilute nitric acid, and the extraction performance remains stable even after 150 kGy gamma irradiation, which provides solid experimental support for potential engineering applications. The results of UV-vis titration and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements show that the 1:1 complex formed by L1 with U(VI) is more stable than all of the previously reported phenanthroline ligands, which reasonably reveals that the ligand L1 designed in this work has excellent affinity for U(VI). The findings of this work promise to contribute to the facilitation of the PUREX process by avoiding the use of reducing agents. It also provides new clues for designing ligands to achieve efficient separation between U(VI) and Pu(IV) at high acidity.

Abstract
Phenanthroline diamide ligands have been widely used in the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides, but little research has focused on extractants with asymmetrical substitutes. Two novel asymmetrical phenanthroline-based ligands N2,N2,N9-triethyl-N9-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide (DE-ET-DAPhen) and N2-ethyl-N9,N9-dioctyl-N2-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide (DO-ET-DAPhen) were first synthesized in this work, whose extraction ability and complexation mechanism to trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] were systematically investigated. The ligands dissolved in n-octanol exhibit good extraction ability and high selectivity toward Am(III) in acidic solutions. The complexation mechanism of the ligands with Ln(III) in solution and solid state was analyzed using slope analysis, 1H NMR spectrometric titration, ESI-MS, and calorimetric titration. It is revealed that the ligands complex with Am(III)/Eu(III) with 1:1 stoichiometry. The stability constant (log β) of the complexation reaction of Eu(III) with DE-ET-DAPhen determined by UV-vis spectrophotometric and calorimetric titration is higher than that of DO-ET-DAPhen, indicating the stronger complexation ability of DE-ET-DAPhen. Meanwhile, the calorimetric titration results show that the complexation process is exothermic with a decreased entropy. The structures of 1:1 complexes of Eu(III) and Nd(III) with DE-ET-DAPhen were analyzed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This work proves that ligands containing asymmetrical functional groups are promising for An(III)/Ln(III) separation, which shows great significance in efficient extractants designed for the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing process.

Abstract
Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) technique and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were combined to study the formation of the complexes of lanthanides (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Yb) and actinides (UO2 2+ , Th4+ ) with CyMe4 -BTBP (6,6'-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-benzo-[1,2,4-]triazin-3-yl)-[2,2']bipyridine) to understand the mechanisms during the extraction process. Mass spectrometry titrations showed the formation of the complexation in acetonitrile. For lanthanides, only 1:2 complexes ([Ln(L)2 ]3+ , [Ln(L)2 (CH3 CN)]3+ ), [Ln(L)2 (NO3 )]2+ ) were found at low [Ln]/[L] concentration ratios, whereas the 1:1 complexes ([Ln(L)(NO3 )2 ]+ ) were observed when the [Ln]/[L] concentration ratio reached 1.0. For uranyl complexes, 1:1 complex ([UO2 L(NO3 )]+ ) was the only species within the measuring range. Th4+ complexes had two compositions: 1:1 and 1:2, in which 1:2 species was the dominant complex. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) was employed to characterize the fragmentation process. The fragmentation process was unfolded sequentially on both sides of CyMe4 -BTBP ligand with the loss of alkyl groups and cleavage of triazinyl rings. The CID results of CyMe4 -BTBP complexes revealed a slight difference depending on the metal center. The DFT calculations showed that the stable complexes formed in acetonitrile solution were consistent with the ESI-MS results.

Abstract
The successful management and safe disposal of high-level nuclear waste necessitate the efficient separation of actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln), which has emerged as a crucial prerequisite. Mixed donor ligands incorporating both soft and hard donor atoms have garnered interest in the field of An/Ln separation and purification. One such example is nitrilotriacetamide (NTAamide) derivatives, which have demonstrated selectivity in extracting minor actinide Am(III) ions over Eu(III) ions. Nevertheless, the Am/Eu complexation behavior and selectivity remain underexplored. In the work, a comprehensive and systematic investigation has been conducted for [M(RL)(NO3)3] complexes (M = Am and Eu) utilizing relativistic density functional theory. The NTAamide ligand (RL) is substituted with various alkyl groups, namely, methyl, ethyl, propyl, n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl, n-heptyl, and n-octyl. Thermodynamic calculations show that the alkyl chain length in NTAamide is capable of tuning the separation selectivity of Am and Eu. Moreover, the differences in calculated free energies between Am and Eu complexes are more negative for R = Bu-Oct than Me-Pr. This indicates that elongation of the alkyl chain can increase the efficiency of selective separation of Am(III) from Eu(III). Based on the quantum theory of atoms in molecules and charge decomposition analyses, it has been observed that the strength of Am-RL bonds is higher than that of Eu-RL bonds. This disparity is attributed to a greater degree of covalency in Am-RL bonds and a higher level of charge transfer from ligands to Am within complexes containing these bonds. Energies of occupied orbitals with the central N character are recognized overall lower for [Am(OctL)(NO3)3] than for [Eu(OctL)(NO3)3], indicative of stronger complexation stability of the former. These results offer valuable insights into the separation mechanism of NTAamide ligands, which can help guide the development of more powerful agents for An/Ln separation in future applications.

Abstract
Non-heterocyclic N-donor nitrilotriacetate-derived triamide ligands are one of the most promising extractants for the selective extraction separation of trivalent actinides over lanthanides, but the thermodynamics and mechanism of the complexation of this kind of ligand with actinides and lanthanides are still not clear. In this work, the complexation behaviors of N,N,N',N',N″,N″-hexaethylnitrilotriacetamide (NTAamide(Et)) with four representative trivalent lanthanides (La3+, Nd3+, Eu3+, and Lu3+) were systematically investigated by using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectrophotometry, microcalorimetry, and single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. 1H NMR spectroscopic titration of La3+ and Lu3+ indicates that two species of 1:2 and 1:1 metal-ligand complexes were formed in NO3- and ClO4- media. The stability constants of NTAamide(Et) with Nd3+ and Eu3+ obtained by UV-vis and fluorescence titration show that the complexing strength of NTAamide(Et) with Nd3+ is lower than that with Eu3+ in the same anionic medium, while that of the same lanthanide complex is higher in ClO4- medium than in NO3- medium. Meanwhile, the formation reactions for all metal-ligand complexes are driven by both enthalpy and entropy. The structures of lanthanide complexes in the single ClO4- and NO3- medium and the mixed one were determined to be [LnL2(MeOH)](ClO4)3 (Ln = La, Nd, Eu, and Lu), [LaL2(EtOH)2][La(NO3)6], and [LaL2(NO3)](ClO4)2, separately. The average bond lengths of lanthanide complexes decrease gradually with the decrease in ionic radii of Ln3+, indicating that heavier lanthanides form stronger complexes due to the lanthanide contraction effect, which coincides with the trend of the complexing strength obtained by spectroscopic titration. This work not only reveals the thermodynamics and mechanism of the complexation between NTAamide ligands and lanthanides but also obtains the periodic tendency of complexation between them, which may facilitate the separation of trivalent lanthanides from actinides.

Abstract
The bistriazinyl-phenanthroline representative ligand, BTPhen, shows excellent extraction and separation ability for trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Herein, we first designed three phenanthroline-based nitrogen-donor ligands (L1, L2, and L3), and then studied the structural and bonding properties as well as thermodynamic properties of the probable complexes, ML(NO3)3 (M = Am or Eu and L = L1, L2, or L3), using scalar relativistic density functional theory. Our charge decomposition analysis revealed an obviously higher charge transfer from the ligand to Am(III) compared with the Eu(III) case for the studied complexes. Spin density analysis further showed a more significant degree of Am-to-ligand spin delocalization and the corresponding spin polarization on the ligands. According to the thermodynamic analysis, ligand L3 has the strongest complexation capacity for both Am(III) and Eu(III) ions, while ligand L1 has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity in binary octanol/water solutions. We expected that this work can provide valuable theoretical support for the design of effective ligands for actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) separation in high level liquid waste.

Abstract
An efficient approach to the synthesis of diamides of 4,7-difluoro-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid was elaborated. Direct nucleophilic substitution with 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline precursors opened access to difluoro derivatives in high yield. As a result, four new fluorinated ligands were prepared in up to 88% yield. Their structure was proved by a combination of spectral methods and X-ray data. A set of lanthanoid complexes was prepared to demonstrate the utility of new ligands. The structure of the complexes was studied in solid state (IR-spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction) and in solution (NMR-spectroscopy).

Abstract
Although 1,10-phenanthroline-based ligands have recently shown vast opportunities for the separation of trivalent actinides (Ans(III)) from lanthanides (Lns(III)), the optimization and design of the extractant structure based on the phenanthroline framework remain hotspots for further improving the separation. Following the strategy of hard and soft donor atom combination, for the first time, the quinoline group was attached to the 1,10-phenanthroline skeleton, giving a lipophilic ligand, 2,9-diacyl-bis((3,4-dihydroquinoline-1((2H)-yl)-1),10-phenanthroline (QL-DAPhen)), for Am(III)/Eu(III) separation. In the presence of sodium nitrate, the ligand can effectively extract Am(III) over Eu(III) in HNO3 solution, with the separation factor (SFAm/Eu) ranging from 29 to 44. The coordination chemistry of Eu(III) with QL-DAPhen was investigated by slope analysis, NMR titration, UV-vis titration, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, and theoretical calculations. The experimental results unanimously confirm that the ligand forms both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with Eu(III), and the stability constants (log β) of each of the two complexes were obtained. Density functional theory calculations show that the Am-N bonds have more covalent characteristics than the Eu-N bonds in the complexes, which reveals the reason why the ligand preferentially bonds with Am(III). Meanwhile, the thermodynamic analysis reveals that the 1:1 complex is more thermodynamically stable than the 1:2 complex. The findings of this work have laid a solid theoretical foundation for the application of phenanthroline-based ligands in the separation of An(III) from practical systems.

Abstract
In this work, we focused on the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) with four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands (L) based on the framework of phenanthroline and bipyridine through scalar relativistic density functional theory. We studied the electronic structures of [ML(NO3)3] (M = Am, Eu) complexes and the bonding nature between metal and ligands as well as evaluated the separation selectivity of Am(III)/Eu(III). The tetrasulfonated ligand L2 with a bipyridine framework has the strongest complexing ability for metal ions probably because of the better solubility and flexible skeleton. The disulfonated ligand L1 has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which is attributed to the covalent difference between the Am-N and Eu-N bonds based on the quantum theory of atoms in the molecule analysis. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands are more selective toward Am(III) over Eu(III). In addition, these hydrophilic sulfonated ligands show better complexing ability and Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity compared to the corresponding hydrophobic nonsulfonated ones. This work provides theoretical support for the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) using hydrophilic sulfonated ligands.

Abstract
The effect of frustrated Lewis donors on metal selectivity between actinides and lanthanides was studied using a series of novel organic ligands. Structures and thermodynamic energies were predicted in the gas phase, in water, and in butanol using 9-coordinate, explicitly solvated (H2O) Eu, Gd, Am, and Cm in the +III oxidation state as reactants in the formation of complexes with 2-(6-[1,2,4]-triazin-3-yl-pyridin-2-yl)-1H-indole (Core 1), 3-[6-(2H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridin-2-yl]-1,2,4-triazine (Core 2), and several derivatives. These complexations were studied using density functional theory (DFT) incorporating scalar relativistic effects on the actinides and lanthanides using a small core pseudopotential and corresponding basis set. A self-consistent reaction field approach was used to model the effect of water and butanol as solvents. Coordination preferences and metal selectivity are predicted for each ligand. Several ligands are predicted to have a high degree of selectivity, particularly when a low ionization potential in the ligand permits charge transfer to Eu(III), reducing it to Eu(II) and creating a half-filled f7 shell. Reasonable separation is predicted between Cm(III) and Gd(III) with Core 1 ligands, possibly due to ligand donor frustration. This separation is largely absent from Core 2 ligands, which are predicted to lose their frustration due to proton transfer from the 2N to the 3N position of the pyrazole component of the ligands via tautomerization.

Abstract
Luminescent β-diketone-based lanthanide complexes have been well explored as chemical sensor materials for biomedicine applications. Herein, three mononuclear Eu3+ complexes based on bis-β-diketone ligands (L1, L2 and L3) that can reduce luminescence quenching caused by water were developed. The ligands feature two β-diketone units covalently bound at the 1,8-position of the derivatized anthracene (modified with tetracyanoethylene, TCNE). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that their self-assemblies with Ln3+ ions in a 2 : 1 stoichiometric ratio form mononuclear anion complexes, [EuL2]-, in which two ligands coordinate to the metal center in a mutually orthogonal manner. This kind of arrangement together with the bulge of TCNE from the anthracene plane well protected the complexes from the quenching effects of water molecules in the second coordination. The photophysical measurements showed that the complexes not only had high luminescence quantum yields (QYs, up to 50-67%) but also presented excellent water-quenching resistant capability.

Abstract
Two new phosphine oxide-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline ligands, tetradentate 2,9-bis(butylphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (BuPh-BPPhen, L1 ) and tridentate 2-(butylphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (BuPh-MPPhen, L2 ), were synthesized and studied comparatively for their coordination with trivalent actinides and lanthanides. The complexation mechanisms of these two ligands toward trivalent f-block elements were thoroughly elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, UV/vis spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solvent extraction, and theoretical calculation methods. NMR titration results demonstrated that 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (metal to ligand) lanthanides complexes formed for L1 , whereas 1 : 1, 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 lanthanide complexes formed for L2 in methanol. The formation of these species was validated by fluorescence spectrometry, and the corresponding stability constants for the complexes of NdIII with L1 and L2 were determined by using UV/vis spectrophotometry. Structures of the 10-coordinated 1 : 1-type complexes of EuL1 (NO3 )3 and [EuL2 (NO3 )3 (H2 O)] Et2 O in the solid state were characterized by X-ray crystallography. In solvent-extraction experiments, L1 exhibited extremely strong extraction ability for both AmIII and EuIII , whereas L2 showed nearly no extraction toward AmIII or EuIII due to its high hydrophilicity. Finally, the structures and bonding natures of the complex species formed between AmIII /EuIII and L1 /L2 were analyzed in DFT calculations.

Abstract
Phenanthroline-diamide ligands have been reported in the selective separation of actinides over Eu(III); on the contrary, relevant basic coordination chemistry studies are still limited, and extraction under actual application conditions is rarely involved. In this work, N,N'-diethyl-N,N'-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline [Et-Tol-DAPhen (L)] was applied to explore the coordination performance of lanthanides in simulative high-level liquid waste. For the first time, cascade countercurrent extraction was conducted with Et-Tol-DAPhen as the extractant, which reveals the periodic tendency of the extraction efficiency of lanthanides to decrease gradually as the atomic number increases. Comparison of elements with similar radii verifies the hypothesis that the increase in the atomic number leads to a decrease in the ionic radius, thus reducing the coordination and extraction capacity of ligands. Slope analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet-visible titration results show that the ligand forms 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with lanthanides and the coordination ability follows the tendency of extraction efficiency, and the first crystal structures of Lns(III) with a phenanthroline-diamide ligand, i.e., [LaL(NO3)3(H2O)] and [LaL2(NO3)2][(NO3)], were obtained, which confirms the conclusions described above. This work promises to enhance our comprehension of the chemical properties of Lns(III) and offer new clues for the design and synthesis of novel separation ligands.

Abstract
The extraction and complexation of trivalent americium (Am) and lanthanides (Ln) by four 2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (DAPhen) ligands with different alkyl substituent groups on the diamide moiety in an ionic liquid (IL), C4mimNTf2, were studied through a combination of batch extraction, spectroscopic, and calorimetric approaches. All four DAPhen ligands can achieve selective separation of Am(III) from Eu(III), but the detailed extractability and the extraction kinetics are affected significantly by the length of the alkyl substituent groups. UV-vis absorption spectrophotometric titrations indicate that Ln(III) coordinates with all four ligands in a 1:2 mode in the ionic liquid and the binding strength decreases with the increase of the alkyl chain length. The complexation of the DAPhen ligands with Ln(III) in the ionic liquid is driven by highly positive entropies and opposed by endothermic enthalpies. A luminescence spectroscopy study suggests that each DAPhen ligand coordinates in a tetradentate form with Eu(III). This work further unravels the unique extraction and coordination behavior in an ionic liquid system and offers additional guidelines to design more efficient DAPhen ligands for Ln(III)/An(III) separation.

Abstract
In this work, a tetradentate N,O-hybrid 2,9-bis(diphenylphosphine oxide)-1,10-phenanthroline (Ph2-BPPhen) ligand was studied for the coextraction of trivalent f-block elements from nitric acid media. The extraction as well as the complexation behaviors of Ph2-BPPhen with f-block elements were thoroughly investigated using 31P and 1H NMR spectrometry, UV-vis spectrophotometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculation. Ph2-BPPhen exhibits remarkably extraction ability for both Am(III) and Eu(III) and more than 99.5% of Am(III) and Eu(III) were extracted from 1.0 M HNO3 solution. Slope analysis suggests that both 2:1 and 1:1 ligand/metal complexes were probably formed during the extraction. The 1:1 and 2:1 Ln(III) complexes with Ph2-BPPhen were also identified in CH3OH solution by NMR spectrometry, and the stability constants were determined via UV-vis spectrophotometry. Structures of the 1:1 Eu(Ph2-BPPhen)(NO3)3 and Am(Ph2-BPPhen)(NO3)3 complexes were further elucidated by single X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations. The higher extractability of Ph2-BPPhen toward trivalent Am(III) and Eu(III) compared with the previously reported phenanthroline-derived amide and phosphonate ligands was attributed to the stronger affinity of the -P═O(R)2 group to metal ions. The results from this work indicate that the N,O-hybrid 1,10-phenanthroline derived phosphine oxide ligand can serve as a new and promising candidate for coextraction of trivalent f-block elements in the treatment of nuclear waste.

Abstract
A DGA-arm-grafted macrocyclic aza-crown ether ligand (Cr6DGA) was synthesized, and its solvent extraction behavior toward trivalent americium and europium in nitric acid medium was studied. The effects of various parameters such as the contact time, temperature, concentration of the extractant, and acidity on the extraction by Cr6DGA were investigated. It was found that in 3 mol/L HNO3, the SFEu/Am value was about 2. The complexation energies calculated by DFT showed that the Eu(III) complexes were more stable than the corresponding Am(III) complexes in gas, aqueous, and organic phases. Furthermore, the coordination study showed that the metal/ligand ratio of the extracted species was 1:2 by mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. The time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectra (TRLFS) further proved that the extracted species contained one water molecule, and so the composition of the extracted complexes may be [EuL2NO3(H2O)]2+ or [EuL2(NO3)2(H2O)]+. Finally, DFT calculations revealed that [EuL2(NO3)2(H2O)]+ is a more stable species and the binding energy of Eu(III) with the DGA unit is lower than that with the crown unit.

Abstract
Detailed information on the An(iii)/Ln(iii) complexation properties in solution is essential for separation chemistry and the prediction of their potential for radionuclide migration from nuclear waste repositories into natural aquifers. In the present study, to better reveal and confirm the structural information of [Eu(Ox)x (H2O)h-2x]3-2x (h = 8, 9; x = 0-3) aqueous species, especially the variable coordination number (CN), and explore the validity of the spectral linear correlation between the luminescence lifetime and the residual hydration number in the first coordination sphere of Eu(iii) compounds in solution, a comparison between the spectral results and the theoretical calculations in a wide parametric space in terms of the pH value and oxalate concentration was carried out by combining time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy (TRLS) with speciation modelling and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found direct and clear evidence for the 9-fold to 8-fold coordination number reduction of Eu(iii) atoms upon coordination with more than one oxalate in an aqueous medium, and as well systematically validated the applicability of the spectral linear correlation in an aqueous system (otherwise solid state) involving multiple species with the support of relatively reliable and clear speciation modelling.

Abstract
Diglycolamide-based ligands have recently received increased attention due to their outstanding affinity for trivalent actinides and lanthanides. The structure optimization of the ligands, however, still remains a hot topic to achieve better extraction performance. In this work, we prepare and investigate three multidentate diglycolamide ligands for the selective separation of Eu(III) over Am(III) from a nitric acid solution to explore the effect on the extraction of alkyl groups on the nitrogen atoms in the center of the BisDGA ligands. The introduction of ethyl or isopropyl groups on the central nitrogen atoms greatly increased the distribution ratios of trivalent metal ions and enhanced the separation factor of Eu(III) over Am(III). The complexation behaviors of Eu(III) and Am(III) ions were studied by slope analyses, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The results indicated that the trivalent metal ions were extracted as 1:2 and 1:3 complexes for all three BisDGA ligands during the extraction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified the relevant experimental conclusion that the selectivity of THEE-BisDGA for Eu(III) is better than that for Am(III). The metal-DGA bonds in the ML3(NO3)3 complexes seem to be stronger than those in ML2(NO3)3 complexes.

Abstract
With the development of nuclear power, the negative environmental impact such as radioactive pollution has become an urgent issue to impede the utilization of nuclear energy. The construction of promising organic-inorganic hybrid materials is considered as an effective strategy for environmental remediation of radioactive contamination. In this work, two-dimensional transition metal carbide (MXene), an emerging inorganic layered material, has been successfully modified by carboxyl terminated aryl diazonium salt to both enhance its chelating ability to radionuclides and improve its water stability. The carboxyl functionalized Ti3C2Tx MXene (TCCH) shows excellent removal ability for U(VI) and Eu(III), evidenced by ultrafast adsorption kinetics (3 min), high maximum adsorption capacities (344.8 mg/g for U and 97.1 mg/g for Eu) and high removal percentage of radionuclides from artificial groundwater (> 90%). The adsorption of U(VI) and Eu(III) on TCCH are in good accord with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Ionic strength experiments, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses were conducted to assess the detailed adsorption mechanism. The results reveal that the adsorption of U(VI) on TCCH follows an inner-sphere configuration, whereas the adsorption of Eu(III) is determined by both inner-sphere complexation and electrostatic interaction.

Abstract
Recovery of transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides is extremely complicated in spent fuel reprocessing. Uncovering the electronic structures of transplutonium compounds is essential for designing robust ligands for in-group separation of transplutonium actinides. Here, we demonstrate the in-group transplutonium actinides separation ability of the recent developed phenanthroline ligand Et-Tol-DAPhen (N2,N9-diethyl-N2,N9-di-p-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide, La) and its derivatives (5-bromo-(N2,N9-diethyl-N2,N9-di-p-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide, Lb), and 5-(4-(λ1-oxidaneyl)phenyl)-(N2,N9-diethyl-N2,N9-di-p-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9- dicarboxamide, Lc) through quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Both electrostatic potential and molecular orbital analyses of the ligands indicate that the electron-donating group substituted ligand Lc is a better electron donor to actinides than La and Lb. The possible extracted complexes AnL(NO3)3 and [AnL2(NO3)]2+ (L = La, Lb, Lc; An = Am, Cm, Bk, Cf) possess similar structures. Bonding nature analysis validates that the covalent interactions of the metal-ligand bonds are enhanced across actinide series from Am to Cf, which stem from the energy degeneracy of the 5f orbitals of actinides and the 2p orbitals of the ligand coordinating atoms. The Lc ligand displays slightly stronger covalent bonding compared to the other two ligands. Simultaneously, thermodynamic analysis confirms the stronger metal-ligand bonding of the Cf3+ complexes and the higher stability of the extraction species with Lc. Consequently, the covalency between the DAPhen derivatives and transplutonium actinides seems to be positively correlated with the extraction ability of these ligands. Nevertheless, these ligands exhibit diverse separation abilities to in-group actinide recovery. Therefore, the enhancement of covalency does not necessarily lead to the improvement of separation ability due to different extraction capabilities. We hope that these results will provide some inspiration for designing novel ligands for in-group transplutonium separation.

Abstract
Two novel core-shell structured SiO2@AIPA-S-Si-Eu and SiO2@AIPA-S-Si-Eu-phen nanocomposites have been synthesized by a bifunctional organic ligands ((HOOC)2C6H3NHCONH(CH2)3Si(OCH2CH3)3) (defined as AIPA-S-Si) connected with Eu3+ ions and silica via covalent bond. And the corresponding core-shell-shell structured SiO2@AIPA-S-Si-Eu@SiO2 and SiO2@AIPA-S-Si-Eu-phen@SiO2 nanocomposites with enhanced luminescence have been synthesized by tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) hydrolysis co-deposition method. The composition and micromorphology of the nanocomposites were characterized by means of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The as-synthesized core-shell and core-shell-shell structured nanocomposites have excellent luminescence intensity and long lifetime. The nanocomposites show bright red light under ultraviolet lamp. However, the core-shell-shell structured nanocomposites have stronger luminescence intensity than the corresponding core-shell structured nanocomposites. Meanwhile, the core-shell-shell structured nanocomposites still exhibit good luminescence stability in aqueous solution. In addition, a large number of Si-OH on the surface of the core-shell-shell structured nanocomposites can be attached to many biomacromolecules. Therefore, they have potential applications in the fields of biology and luminescence.
