Rare-Earth Zirconate Ln2Zr2O7 (Ln: La, Nd, Gd, and Dy) Powders, Xerogels, and Aerogels: Preparation, Structure, and Properties

Photoluminescence Investigations of Dy3+-Doped Silicate Xerogels and SiO2-LaF3 Nano-Glass-Ceramic Materials

In this work, the series of Dy³⁺-doped silicate xerogels were synthesized by sol-gel technique and further processed at 350 °C into SiO₂-LaF₃:Dy³⁺ nano-glass-ceramic materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, along with the thermal analysis, indicated that heat-treatment triggered the decomposition of La(TFA)₃ inside amorphous sol-gel hosts, resulting in the formation of hexagonal LaF₃ phase with average crystal size at about ~10 nm. Based on the photoluminescence results, it was proven that the intensities of blue (⁴F_9/2 → ⁶H_15/2), yellow (⁴F_9/2 → ⁶H_13/2), and red (⁴F_9/2 → ⁶H_11/2) emissions, as well as the calculated yellow-to-blue (Y/B) ratios, are dependent on the nature of fabricated materials, and from fixed La³⁺:Dy³⁺ molar ratios. For xerogels, the emission was gradually increased, and the τ(⁴F_9/2) lifetimes were elongated to 42.7 ± 0.3 μs (La³⁺:Dy³⁺ = 0.82:0.18), however, for the sample with the lowest La³⁺:Dy³⁺ molar ratio (0.70:0.30), the concentration quenching was observed. For SiO₂-LaF₃:Dy³⁺ nano-glass-ceramics, the concentration quenching effect was more visible than for xerogels and started from the sample with the highest La³⁺:Dy³⁺ molar ratio (0.988:0.012), thus the τ(⁴F_9/2) lifetimes became shorter from 1731.5 ± 5.7 up to 119.8 ± 0.4 μs. The optical results suggest, along with an interpretation of XRD data, that Dy³⁺ ions were partially entered inside LaF₃ phase, resulting in the shortening of Dy³⁺-Dy³⁺ inter-ionic distances.

Insights into the Role of Biopolymer-Based Xerogels in Biomedical Applications

Xerogels are advanced, functional, porous materials consisting of ambient, dried, cross-linked polymeric networks. They possess characteristics such as high porosity, great surface area, and an affordable preparation route; they can be prepared from several organic and inorganic precursors for numerous applications. Owing to their desired properties, these materials were found to be suitable for several medical and biomedical applications; the high drug-loading capacity of xerogels and their ability to maintain sustained drug release make them highly desirable for drug delivery applications. As biopolymers and chemical-free materials, they have been also utilized in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine due to their high biocompatibility, non-immunogenicity, and non-cytotoxicity. Biopolymers have the ability to interact, cross-link, and/or trap several active agents, such as antibiotic or natural antimicrobial substances, which is useful in wound dressing and healing applications, and they can also be used to trap antibodies, enzymes, and cells for biosensing and monitoring applications. This review presents, for the first time, an introduction to biopolymeric xerogels, their fabrication approach, and their properties. We present the biological properties that make these materials suitable for many biomedical applications and discuss the most recent works regarding their applications, including drug delivery, wound healing and dressing, tissue scaffolding, and biosensing.

Zirconia aerogels for thermal management: Review of synthesis, processing, and properties information architecture

Zirconia aerogels are porous nanomaterials with high specific surface areas and low thermal conductivities that are suitable for a wide range of functions. The applications of zirconia aerogels include numerous uses in thermal management systems that are specifically beneficial in aeronautics and aerospace systems. This review seeks to detail the synthesis, processing, and characterization of these unique materials. However, the many distinctive synthesis pathways and processing conditions of zirconia aerogels can make the optimization of these materials difficult, potentially inhibiting further development. Independent variables in the synthesis process alone include zirconium precursor, rare earth stabilizer, solvent system, gelation agent, and surfactant templating agent. If only two distinct options were available for each synthetic variable, there would be up to 32 different synthetic pathways; if there were three options for each variable, 243 different synthetic pathways would be possible. Apart from the gel synthesis, processing conditions, including drying method, drying temperature, drying solvent, and sintering temperature, as well as various techniques used to characterize aerogels, need to be considered. To mitigate the sheer volume of synthetic parameters, this review uses an architected information structure to contemplate approximately 600 aerogel materials, along with the synthesis and processing conditions that make each material unique. By utilizing this information structure, containing over 10,000 relationships amongst 3,800 nodes, the connection between specific properties of zirconia aerogels and the pathways used to produce them can be more easily visualized, leading to a more effective understanding of the many variables that are used in the synthesis and processing of these materials. This review seeks to utilize data science in a way that can elucidate structure-property relationships in colloidal chemistry, providing a more efficient way to evaluate the synthesis and processing of materials with high experimental dimensionality.
