Photoresponsiveness of Anthracene-Based Supramolecular Polymers Regulated via a σ-Platinated 4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene Photosensitizer

Molecular and supramolecular adaptation by coupled stimuli

Adaptation transcends scale in both natural and artificial systems, but delineating the causative factors of this phenomenon requires urgent clarification. Herein, we unravel the molecular requirements for adaptation and establish a link to rationalize adaptive behavior on a self-assembled level. These concepts are established by analyzing a model compound exhibiting both light- and pH-responsive units, which enable the combined or independent application of different stimuli. On a molecular level, adaptation arises from coupled stimuli, as the final outcome of the system depends on their sequence of application. However, in a self-assembled state, a single stimulus suffices to induce adaptation as a result of collective molecular behavior and the reversibility of non-covalent interactions. Our findings go beyond state-of-the-art (multi)stimuli-responsive systems and allow us to draw up design guidelines for adaptive behavior both at the molecular and supramolecular levels, which are fundamental criteria for the realization of intelligent matter.

Switchable Optical Properties of Dyes and Nanoparticles in Electrowetting Devices

The optical properties of light-absorbing materials in optical shutter devices are critical to the use of such platforms for optical applications. We demonstrate switchable optical properties of dyes and nanoparticles in liquid-based electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices. Our work uses narrow-band-absorbing dyes and nanoparticles, which are appealing for spectral-filtering applications targeting specific wavelengths while maintaining device transparency at other wavelengths. Low-voltage actuation of boron dipyromethene (BODIPY) dyes and nanoparticles (Ag and CdSe) was demonstrated without degradation of the light-absorbing materials. Three BODIPY dyes were used, namely Abs 503 nm, 535 nm and 560 nm for dye 1 (BODIPY-core), 2 (I2BODIPY) and 3 (BODIPY-TMS), respectively. Reversible and low-voltage (≤20 V) switching of dye optical properties was observed as a function of device pixel dimensions (300 × 900, 200 × 600 and 150 × 450 µm). Low-voltage and reversible switching was also demonstrated for plasmonic and semiconductor nanoparticles, such as CdSe nanotetrapods (abs 508 nm), CdSe nanoplatelets (Abs 461 and 432 nm) and Ag nanoparticles (Abs 430 nm). Nanoparticle-based devices showed minimal hysteresis as well as faster relaxation times. The study presented can thus be extended to a variety of nanomaterials and dyes having the desired optical properties.

Light-triggered Modulation of Supramolecular Chirality

Dynamically controlling the supramolecular chirality is of great significance in development of functional chiral materials, which is thus essential for the specific function implementation. As an external energy input, light is remote and accurate for modulating chiral assemblies. In non-polarized light control, some photochemically reactive units (e. g., azobenzene, ɑ-cyanostilbene, spiropyran, anthracene) or photo-induced directionally rotating molecular motors were designed to drive chiral transfer or amplification. Besides, photoexcitation induced assembly based physical approach was also explored recently to regulate supramolecular chirality beyond photochemical reactions. In addition, circularly polarized light was applied to induce asymmetric arrangement of organic molecules and asymmetric photochemical synthesis of inorganic metallic nanostructures, in which both wavelength and handedness of circularly polarized light have effects on the induced supramolecular chirality. Although light-triggered chiral assemblies have been widely applied in photoelectric materials, biomedical fields, soft actuator, chiral catalysis and chiral sensing, there is a lack of systematic review on this topic. In this review, we summarized the recent studies and perspectives in the constructions and applications of light-responsive chiral assembled systems, aiming to provide better knowledge for the development of multifunctional chiral nanomaterials.

Reversible [4 + 2] Photooxygenation in Anion-Coordination-Driven-Assembled A2L2-Type Complexes

Two bis-bis(urea) ligands (L¹ and L²) incorporating the photoactive 9,10-diphenylanthracene fragment were designed for the construction of anion-coordination-driven assemblies and subsequent oxygenation of anthracene moieties for singlet oxygen storage. The corresponding A₂L₂-type sulfate complexes [TEA]₄[(SO₄)₂(L¹)₂] (1) and [TEA]₄[(SO₄)₂(L²)₂] (2), where TEA = tetraethylammonium, were achieved by coordinating the ligands L¹ or L² with sulfate anions. Both 1 and 2 were able to undergo [4 + 2] photooxygenation to form endoperoxide photoproducts 1-EPO and 2-EPO, which can be partially converted back to the original anthracene compounds after heating. The structures of 1-EPO and 2-EPO were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography, NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Synergistic combination of ACQ and AIE moieties to enhance the emission of hexagonal metallacycles

Herein, we show the synergistic combination of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) units into two hexagonal metallacycles. The resultant metallacycles displayed emergent photophysical properties including tunable fluorescence using the polarity and solubility of the solvents as well as enhanced emissive efficacy. Our work demonstrates the synergistic enhancement of these two orthogonal effects via coordination-driven self-assembly.

Molecular Plumbing to Bend Self-Assembling Peptide Nanotubes

Light-induced molecular piping of cyclic peptide nanotubes to form bent tubular structures is described. The process is based on the [4+4] photocycloaddition of anthracene moieties, whose structural changes derived from the interdigitated flat disposition of precursors to the corresponding cycloadduct moieties, induced the geometrical modifications in nanotubes packing that provokes their curvature. For this purpose, we designed a new class of cyclic peptide nanotubes formed by β- and α-amino acids. The presence of the former predisposes the peptide to stack in a parallel fashion with the β-residues aligned along the nanotube and the homogeneous distribution of anthracene pendants.

Single-Photon Near-Infrared-Responsiveness from the Molecular to the Supramolecular Level via Platination of Pentacenes

Near-infrared (NIR) responsiveness is important for various applications. Currently, single-photon NIR-responsive systems are rare compared to systems that display two-photon absorption and triplet-triplet annihilation processes. Supramolecular stacking of photo-responsive chromophores results in decreased efficiency due to space-confinement effects. Herein we show that σ-platination of pentacenes is a feasible protocol to build single-photon NIR-responsive systems, with advantages including a low HOMO-LUMO energy gap, high photochemical efficiency, and pathway specificity. The pentacene-to-endoperoxidation transformation is accompanied by color and absorbance changes. The high photo-oxygenation efficiency of σ-platinated pentacenes facilitates NIR responsiveness in one-dimensional supramolecular polymers, resulting in the disappearance of supramolecular chirality signals and disruption of self-assembled nanofibers. Overall, the σ-platination strategy opens up new avenues toward NIR photo-responsive materials at the molecular and supramolecular levels.

Cyanostilbene-based vapo-fluorochromic supramolecular assemblies for reversible 3D code encryption

Scanning codes with the capability for stimuli-triggered decryption are urgently needed to prevent information leakage and counterfeiting. Compared to conventional 1D barcodes and 2D QR codes, 3D codes show promise in this field thanks to the presence of four different colors in the icon, with great information variability. Up to now, encrypted 3D code development has primarily focused on chemical reaction-based systems, leading to information decryption in an irreversible transformation manner. Herein, a novel and intelligent 3D code encryption system has been constructed with full reversibility and a fast response, taking advantage of the luminescent vapochromism of cyanostilbene-based supramolecular assemblies. Information in the inkjet-printed 3D code is specifically decrypted through vapor fuming with chlorinated solvents, while it is reversibly encrypted upon removing the vapor. Hence, this study provides a novel and effective strategy for obtaining high-performance smart scanning codes.

Structural Isomerism Effect in Platinum(II) Acetylide-Based Supramolecular Polymers

The self-assembly of π-aromatic organic and organometallic molecules into long-range-ordered supramolecular polymers is dictated by a variety of molecular parameters and external conditions. In this work, structural isomerism, representing one of the potent molecular parameters, has been investigated to modulate the self-assembly behaviors. Two platinum(II) acetylide-based structural isomers, with different N-hexyl substitution positions on the inner benzotriazole core, have been designed. Thanks to the synergistic participation of hydrogen-bonding and π-π-stacking interactions, both platinum(II) acetylide-based compounds are prone to forming supramolecular polymers via a nucleation-elongation cooperative mechanism in apolar media. Thermal hysteresis phenomena are observed for both compounds, suggesting the different supramolecular polymerization pathways upon cooling and heating. Remarkably, in addition to the spectroscopic difference, these two supramolecular polymers display distinct thermostability and rheological moduli, ascribing to different binding enthalpies of the neighboring monomers. Overall, it is evident that a minor variation at the molecular level brings huge differences to the properties of long-range-ordered supramolecular polymers. The current study illustrates the importance of the structural isomerism effect for the rational design of π-functional supramolecular materials.

1,8-Dioxapyrene-based electrofluorochromic supramolecular hyperbranched polymers

A 1,8-dioxapyrene-based electrofluorochromic supramolecular polymer was constructed through the coordination of terpyridine ligands with Eu³⁺ ions. The polymer can be used in anti-counterfeiting inks.
