Abstract
Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable electricity has been recognized as a promising approach for green hydrogen production. Different from conventional strategies in developing electrocatalysts for the two half-reactions of water splitting (e.g., the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, HER and OER) separately, there has been a growing interest in designing and developing bifunctional electrocatalysts, which are able to catalyze both the HER and OER. In addition, considering the high overpotentials required for OER while limited value of the produced oxygen, there is another rapidly growing interest in exploring alternative oxidation reactions to replace OER for hybrid water splitting toward energy-efficient hydrogen generation. This Review begins with an introduction on the fundamental aspects of water splitting, followed by a thorough discussion on various physicochemical characterization techniques that are frequently employed in probing the active sites, with an emphasis on the reconstruction of bifunctional electrocatalysts during redox electrolysis. The design, synthesis, and performance of diverse bifunctional electrocatalysts based on noble metals, nonprecious metals, and metal-free nanocarbons, for overall water splitting in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, are thoroughly summarized and compared. Next, their application toward hybrid water splitting is also presented, wherein the alternative anodic reactions include sacrificing agents oxidation, pollutants oxidative degradation, and organics oxidative upgrading. Finally, a concise statement on the current challenges and future opportunities of bifunctional electrocatalysts for both overall and hybrid water splitting is presented in the hope of guiding future endeavors in the quest for energy-efficient and sustainable green hydrogen production.

Abstract
The large-scale hydrogen production and application through electrocatalytic water splitting depends crucially on the development of highly efficient, cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which, however, remains challenging. Here, a new electrocatalyst of trimetallic Fe-Co-Ni hydroxide (denoted as FeCoNiOx Hy ) with a nanotubular structure is developed through an enhanced Kirkendall process under applied potential. The FeCoNiOx Hy features synergistic electronic interaction between Fe, Co, and Ni, which not only notably increases the intrinsic OER activity of FeCoNiOx Hy by facilitating the formation of *OOH intermediate, but also substantially improves the intrinsic conductivity of FeCoNiOx Hy to facilitate charge transfer and activate catalytic sites through electrocatalyst by promoting the formation of abundant Co3+ . Therefore, FeCoNiOx Hy delivers remarkably accelerated OER kinetics and superior apparent activity, indicated by an ultra-low overpotential potential of 257 mV at a high current density of 200 mA cm-2 . This work is of fundamental and practical significance for synergistic catalysis related to advanced energy conversion materials and technologies.

Abstract
Rational design and fabrication of efficient and low-cost catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Herein, we report heteroatom Fe-incorporated Ni5P4 (Fe-NiP) as an excellent bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that heteroatom Fe effectively steers the electronic structure of Ni5P4, which optimizes the hydrogen adsorption behavior. Additionally, the hierarchical conductive framework of Fe-NiP contributes to abundant active sites. Thus, the Fe-NiP catalyst shows robust performance with enhanced intrinsic catalytic activity. As a good bifunctional catalyst, it demands low overpotentials of 144 and 223 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for HER and OER, respectively. Considering the good bifunctional activity, an outstanding electrolyzer has been successfully assembled, which is superior to the benchmark of a RuO2(+)//Pt/C(-) electrolyzer. This study sheds light on steering the electronic structure of electrocatalysts through a heteroatom modulation strategy.

Abstract
Amongst various futuristic renewable energy sources, hydrogen fuel is deemed to be clean and sustainable. Electrochemical water splitting (EWS) is an advanced technology to produce pure hydrogen in a cost-efficient manner. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the vital steps of EWS and have been at the forefront of research over the past decades. The low-cost nanostructured metal phosphide (MP)-based electrocatalysts exhibit unconventional physicochemical properties and offer very high turnover frequency (TOF), low over potential, high mass activity with improved efficiency, and long-term stability. Therefore, they are deemed to be potential electrocatalysts to meet practical challenges for supporting the future hydrogen economy. This review discusses the recent research progress in nanostructured MP-based catalysts with an emphasis given on in-depth understanding of catalytic activity and innovative synthetic strategies for MP-based catalysts through combined experimental (in situ/operando techniques) and theoretical investigations. Finally, the challenges, critical issues, and future outlook in the field of MP-based catalysts for water electrolysis are addressed.

Abstract
The design and preparation of efficient and low-cost catalysts for water electrolysis are crucial and highly desirable to produce eco-friendly and sustainable hydrogen fuel. Herein, we prepared nitrogen-doped carbon-incorporated CoP@Fe-CoP core-shelled nanorod arrays grown on Ni foam (CoP@Fe-CoP/NC/NF) through phosphorization of ZIF-67@Co-Fe Prussian blue analogue (ZIF-67@CoFe-PBA). The hierarchical nanorod arrays combined with the core-shelled structure offer favorable mass/electron transport capacity and maximize the active sites, thus enhancing the electrochemically active surface area. The synergistic effect of the bimetallic components and the nitrogen-doped carbon matrix endow the composite with an optimized electronic structure. Benefiting from the above superiorities of morphological and chemical compositions, this self-supported CoP@Fe-CoP/NC/NF heterostructure can drive alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction with overpotentials of 97 and 270 mV to yield 100 mA cm-2, respectively. The two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer constructed by this heterostructure shows a low cell voltage of 1.58 V to yield 10 mA cm-2, superior to the precious-metal-based electrocatalyst apparatus (IrO2∥Pt/C). This study offers a feasible and facile approach to develop efficient electrocatalysts for water electrolysis, which applies to other electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract
As the core of an electrocatalyst, the active site is critical to determine its catalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, porous N-doped carbon-encapsulated CoP nanoparticles on both sides of graphene (CoP@NC/GR) are derived from a bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF)@graphene oxide composite. Through active site engineering by tailoring the environment around CoP and engineering the structure, the HER activity of CoP@NC/GR heterostructures is significantly enhanced. Both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifest that the electronic structure of CoP can be modulated by the carbon matrix of NC/GR, resulting in electron redistribution and a reduction in the adsorption energy of hydrogen (ΔGH*) from -0.53 to 0.04 eV. By engineering the sandwich-like structure, active sites in CoP@NC/GR are further increased by optimizing the Zn/Co ratio in the bimetallic MOF. Benefiting from this active site engineering, the CoP@NC/GR electrocatalyst exhibits small overpotentials of 105 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 (or 125 mV in 1 M KOH) to 10 mA cm-2, accelerated HER kinetics with a low Tafel slope of 47.5 mV dec-1, and remarkable structural and HER stability.

Abstract
Although Ni phosphides are efficient for hydrogen evolution reactions, they are unfavorable for oxygen evolution reactions, so their application in alkaline water electrolysis is limited. It is a feasible method for creating a novel Ni phosphide/oxide heterogeneous interface to promote the oxygen evolution kinetics of Ni phosphide materials in an alkaline medium, yet it has been an unprecedented challenge for researchers. In this work, NiP3@CeO2 hybrid nanoparticles are firstly in situ grown on Ni foam (NiP3@CeO2/NF) via a novel controlled phosphating strategy. The NiP3@CeO2/NF catalysts display a fairly small overpotential of 200 mV to achieve a current density of 25 mA cm-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions, 110 mV smaller than that of NiO@CeO2/NF. It is noteworthy that the improved electrocatalytic performance of NiP3@CeO2/NF can be attributed to rapid electron transfer and the synergistic catalytic effect of the hybrid material. Density functional theory results demonstrate that NiP3 shows a stronger water adsorption energy than CeO2. The novel strategy of controlled phosphating to construct transition metal phosphide/oxide interfaces provides new ideas and methods for the development of efficient and practical water splitting catalysts.
