Metal-Organic Frameworks of Cu(II) Constructed from Functionalized Ligands for High Capacity H2 and CO2 Gas Adsorption and Catalytic Studies

Mechanistical Insights into the Ultrasensitive Detection of Radioactive and Chemotoxic UO22+ Ions by a Porous Anionic Co-Metal-Organic Framework

Development of a simple, cost-efficient, and portable UO22+ sensory probe with high selectivity and sensitivity is highly desirable in the context of monitoring radioactive contaminants. Herein, we report a luminescent Co-based metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Me2NH2]0.5[Co(DATRz)0.5(NH2BDC)]·xG}n (1), equipped with abundant amino functionalities for the selective detection of uranyl cations. The ionic structure consists of two types of channels decorated with plentiful Lewis basic amino moieties, which trigger a stronger acid-base interaction with the diffused cationic units and thus can selectively quench the fluorescence intensity in the presence of other interfering ions. Furthermore, the limit of detection for selective UO22+ sensing was achieved to be as low as 0.13 μM (30.94 ppb) with rapid responsiveness and multiple recyclabilities, demonstrating its excellent efficacy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further unraveled the preferred binding sites of the UO22+ ions in the tubular channel of the MOF structure. Orbital hybridization between NH2BDC/DATRz and UO22+ together with its significantly large electron-accepting ability is identified as responsible for the luminescence quenching. More importantly, the prepared 1@PVDF {poly(vinylidene difluoride)} mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) displayed good fluorescence activity comparable to 1, which is of great significance for their practical employment as MOF-based luminosensors in real-world sensing application.

Zn-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Triptycene Hexacarboxylate Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and Gas-Sorption Properties

A series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on zinc ions and two triptycene ligands of different size have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Structural analyses revealed that they are isostructural 3D-network MOFs. The high porosity and thermal stability of these MOFs can be attributed to the highly rigid triptycene-based ligands. Their BET specific surface areas depend on the size of the triptycene ligands. In contrast to these surface-area data, the H2 and CO2 adsorption of these MOFs is larger for MOFs with small pores. Consequently, we introduced functional groups to the bridge-head position of the triptycene ligands and investigated their effect on the gas-sorption properties. The results unveiled the role of the functional groups in the specific CO2 binding via an induced interaction between adsorbates and the functional groups. Excellent H2 and CO2 properties in these MOFs were achieved in the absence of open metal sites.

An amine decorated MOF for direct capture of CO2 from ambient air

A Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized by the self-assembly of the dicarboxylate ligand terephthalic acid (TPA), 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-TPA) and N-donor auxiliary ligand 1,4-bis(4-pyridinylmethyl)piperazine (bpmp) using Zn(NO3)2·6H2O under hydrothermal conditions. {[Zn(TPA)0.5(NH2TPA)0.5(bpmp)]·DMF·7H2O}n (framework 1) has an sra topology with a BET surface area of 756 m2 g-1. The microporous nature of the framework is apparent from the significant CO2 adsorption capacities observed at various temperatures: 57 cc g-1 at 283 K, 46 cc g-1 at 293 K, 37 cc g-1 at 303 K, and 30 cc g-1 at 313 K. The considerable CO2 adsorption may be caused by the existence of free carboxylate and amine substituents that interact with the gas molecules and micropores. At room temperature, the activated MOF readily converts CO2 into cyclic carbonates when a suspension of the MOF is bubbled with ambient air and different epoxides under solvent-free conditions. The amine groups located within the pores of the MOF interact with CO2 molecules, enhancing their sorption and conversion to cyclic carbonates. However, due to interpenetration within framework 1, only smaller size epoxides can be accommodated and converted to cyclic carbonates in good yields. Additionally, the effectiveness of the catalyst is further confirmed by the positive outcomes obtained from the hot filtration control test. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) molecular simulations were utilized to gain a better understanding of molecular interactions. GCMC results are in line with the experiments. The substantial adsorption of CO2 can be ascribed to the strong intermolecular interactions that occur between the amine groups within the framework and the CO2 molecules.

Atomically Dispersed Iron Sites on the Hollow Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Framework with a Highly Efficient Performance on Carbon Dioxide Cycloaddition

The exploration of efficient and low-consumption catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO₂) conversion is desirable yet remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel catalyst composed of a hollow nitrogen-doped carbon framework (HNF) enriched with high-loading (9.8 wt %) atomically dispersed iron sites (defined as Fe_SAs/HNF) has been fabricated by a polymer-assisted strategy. As a result, Fe_SAs/HNF has an excellent performance on the cycloaddition reactions of CO₂ with epoxides (the conversion >96%) under milder conditions because of its ultrahigh loading of atomically dispersed iron sites. This study not only provides an advanced catalyst for driving CO₂ cycloaddition but also furnishes a novel perspective on the rational design of superior catalysts with high-loading active sites for diverse heterogeneous catalytic reactions.

Synthesis and characterization of a 2-periodic cadmium-based metal-organic framework: A study on reversible water adsorption

A previously-reported cadmium-based two-periodic metal-organic framework [Cd_1.5(BTC)(H₂O)_4.5]_n·nH₂O (CP1) has been re-synthesized, where H₃BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid. CP1 was characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) followed by various thermal analyses such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), hot stage microscopy (HSM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). CP1 is composed of 2-periodic layers, which are interdigitated. Heating can effectively remove the uncoordinated and coordinated water molecules resulting in an amorphous product CP1′. The original framework can be regenerated by readsorption of water from the atmosphere, indicating that the dehydration is reversible.

Exploring the Noncovalent Interactions of the Dinuclear Cu(II) Schiff Base Complex with Bovine Serum Albumin and Cell Viability against the SiHa Cancer Cell Line

In the present study, a dinuclear bis(μ-acetate) dicopper(II) complex [Cu₂L₂(μ_1.1-CH₃COO^-)₂] has been synthesized from a tridentate NNO Schiff Base ligand L (L = 2,4-dibromo-6-((3-(methylamino)propylimino)methyl)phenol) and characterized by elemental, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ¹H NMR, and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) spectroscopic studies. The single-crystal X-ray structure, different noncovalent interactions, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) studies of the dinuclear complex were determined by crystallographic computational studies. The structural study exposed that the complex consists of the penta-coordinated double μ_1.1-acetato-bridged dinuclear units of Cu(II), and it is a centrosymmetric dimer in which the center of inversion lies at the midpoint of two Cu(II) ions. Hirshfeld surface and DFT studies pointed out the probable potentiality of the crystal in prospective binding with the protein. This was experimentally verified by carrying out the binding interaction studies against bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein using various spectroscopic methods. It was observed that the copper(II) complex could strongly bind to BSA and could quench the intrinsic fluorescence of BSA. Further, the studied complex was appraised for cell viability studies against SiHa cancer cells. It is observed that cell viability increases with time, demonstrating the biocompatible nature of the complex.

Efficient Gas and VOC Separation and Pesticide Detection in a Highly Stable Interpenetrated Indium-Organic Framework

The new indium-based organic framework {(Me₂NH₂)[In(BDPO)]·DMF·2H₂O}_n (1) was successfully constructed by using the oxalamide group modified ligand N,N'-bis(isophthalic acid)oxalamide (H₄BDPO). This framework presents a 2-fold interpenetrating structural characteristic, and the unique polar pore environment leads to a high capture ability for CO₂, C₂H_n and CH₃OH and good separation ability for CO₂ and C₂H_n over CH₄ as well as for CH₃OH over C₂H₅OH, which was further verified by an ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) calculation. Theoretical simulations pointed out the possible adsorption sites of different adsorbed gases in 1. In addition, the excellent chemical stability and strong luminescence of 1 give it an effective selective detection ability for 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline (DCN) in water with a low detection limit of 3.85 ppm, and the detection mechanism is discussed in detail.

Factors Affecting Hydrogen Adsorption in Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Short Review

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have significant potential for hydrogen storage. The main benefit of MOFs is their reversible and high-rate hydrogen adsorption process, whereas their biggest disadvantage is related to their operation at very low temperatures. In this study, we describe selected examples of MOF structures studied for hydrogen adsorption and different factors affecting hydrogen adsorption in MOFs. Approaches to improving hydrogen uptake are reviewed, including surface area and pore volume, in addition to the value of isosteric enthalpy of hydrogen adsorption. Nanoconfinement of metal hydrides inside MOFs is proposed as a new approach to hydrogen storage. Conclusions regarding MOFs with incorporated metal nanoparticles, which may be used as nanoscaffolds and/or H₂ sorbents, are summarized as prospects for the near future.

Postsynthetic Modification of Metal-Organic Frameworks by Vapor-Phase Grafting

A vapor-phase grafting strategy is developed for the postsynthetic modification of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). On the basis of the Schotten-Baumann reaction between acyl chloride (-COCl) and amino (-NH₂) groups and hydrolysis of -COCl, the carboxylated MOFs could be prepared through simple exposure in vaporized acyl chloride molecules and immersion in water. The modified MOFs have well-maintained crystalline structures and porosities and show substantially improved fluoride removal performance.

Synthesis, structure and the Hirshfeld surface analysis of three novel metal-tiron coordination complexes

Three novel metal-tiron (4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonic acid disodium salt) and other pillared ligand bpy (4,4′-bipyridyl)-centered coordination polymers of the formulae [Cd(tiron)(bpy)₂(H₂O)₂]·0.5(H₂O), 1, [Co₃(tiron-bpy)₂(bpy)(H₂O)₈]·(H₂O)₂, 2, and [Ba₂(tiron-bpy)₂(H₂O)₄][solvent], 3, were successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The as-synthesized materials were well characterized by complimentary techniques such as single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. The as-synthesized coordination polymers of 1 and 2 featured 1D chains, while 3 shows a layered structure. Co-based 2 shows linear trinuclear Co(ii) ions and these Co(ii) ions have antiferromagnetic interactions among themselves. The structure of 1 features a zig-zag chain formed by the linkage between monodentate tiron ligands and octahedral Cd(ii) ions, interconnected by a twisted bpy ligand, 2 shows a linear chain constructed from corner-sharing trinuclear octahedral Co(ii) ions and coordinated with a tridentate tiron-bpy adduct ligand, whereas 3 shows nona-coordinated Ba(ii) ions sharing edges with other Ba(ii) ions and connected by hexadentate tiron-bridged structures resulting in a layered structure. In 2 and 3, the bpy nitrogen attacks at the ortho position of the tiron ligand and forms an in situ ligand adduct. The central metal ions show an octahedral geometry in 1 (Cd(ii) ions) and 2 (Co(ii) ions), but nona-coordination of Ba(ii) ions in 3. The short interatomic interactions in the crystal structures were evaluated by mapping the Hirshfeld surface process using pseudo-mirrored 2D fingerprint plots. The major short interatomic interactions H⋯H, O⋯H and C⋯H cover the Hirshfeld surfaces.
