Healable, Phase-Selective, and White-Light-Emitting Titania Based Hybrid Lanthanide-Doped Metallogels

Solvent-Directed Bioactive Supramolecular Zinc(II)-Metallogels: Exploring Semiconducting Aptitudes of Fabricating p-n Junction and Schottky Devices

α-Ketoglutaric acid-based supramolecular Zn(II) metallogels in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent (i.e., Zn-α-Glu-DMF and Zn-α-Glu-DMSO) were successfully achieved. Zinc(II) acetate salt and α-ketoglutaric acid directed a three-dimensional noncovalent supramolecular network individually entrapped with N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent to accomplish their respective semisolid flexible metallogel frameworks. The gel features of these synthesized materials were verified by rheological experiments such as amplitude sweep and frequency sweep measurements. The discrete morphological arrangements were analyzed for these metallogel samples through field emission scanning electron microscopic (FESEM) analysis. Highly stacked interconnected blocks of Zn-α-Glu-DMF with hierarchical arrays are found due to the occurrence of diverse noncovalent supramolecular interactions present in the metallogel framework. A distinct spherical shaped microstructure with interconnected hierarchical assembly has been observed for the FESEM pattern of Zn-α-Glu-DMSO. FTIR spectroscopic measurement was carried out to detect some important stretching vibrations of xerogel samples of different metallogels as well as gel-constructing chemical ingredients. A substantial amount of peak shifting of xerogel samples for both metallogels is observed in FTIR analysis, indicating the presence of different noncovalent interactions. ESI-mass analysis portrays a possible metallogel-constructing strategy. The antibacterial potentialities of both metallogels were investigated. These materials exhibited good antimicrobial efficacy toward Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains (including Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella typhimurium). Both synthesized metallogels were successfully implemented to fabricate the photoresponsive semiconducting diode. These materials offer excellent photodiode parameters including an ideality factor and rectification ratio (ON/OFF ratio). Synthesized metallogels are used to successfully fabricate photodiodes with an Al/p-Si/metallogel/Au structure. The ideality factors (η) for Zn-α-Glu-DMF and Zn-α-Glu-DMSO are found as 1.3 and 2.3, respectively, in dark conditions. The rectification ratios for Zn-α-Glu-DMF and Zn-α-Glu-DMSO metallogels are also determined, and these are found as 40 and 10, respectively.

Exploration of Variable Solvent Directed Self-Healable Supramolecular M(II)-Metallogels (M = Co, Ni, Zn) of Azelaic Acid: Investigating Temperature-Dependent Ion Conductivity and Antibacterial Efficiency

Molecular self-assembly assisted self-healing supramolecular metallogels of azelaic acid with cobalt(II)-, nickel(II)-, and zinc(II)-based metal acetate salts were successfully fabricated. Individually, N,N'-dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide were immobilized within these distinctly synthesized soft-scaffolds of metallogels to attain their semisolid viscoelastic nature. Rheological experiments such as amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, and thixotropic measurements were executed for these metallogels to ratify their gel features. The different extents of supramolecular interactions operating within these solvent-directed metallogels were clearly reflected in terms of their distinct morphological patterns as investigated through field emission scanning electron microscopy. Comparative infrared (IR) spectral properties of metallogels along with individual metal salts and azelaic acid were analyzed. These experimental data clearly depict the significant shifting of Fourier transform (FT)-IR peaks of xerogel samples of different metallogels from the gel-forming precursors. The networks present within the soft-scaffold are evidently illustrated by the electrospray ionization-mass experimental data. The temperature-dependent ionic conductivity studies with these solvent-directed versatile metallogel systems were investigated through impedance spectroscopy. The temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopic studies clearly demonstrate that the ion-transportation within the gel matrix depends not only on the types of cations but also on the dielectric properties of the immobilized solvents. The antipathogenic effect of these metallogel systems has also been explored by testing their effectiveness against human pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC 109) and Vibrio parahemolyticus, and Gram-positive bacteria like Bacillus cereus (MTCC 1272). These gel soft-scaffolds show no significant cytotoxicity against both the human neuroblastoma cell line-SH-SY5Y and the human embryonic kidney cell line-HEK 293.

Recent Progress in Self-Healable Hydrogel-Based Electroluminescent Devices: A Comprehensive Review

Flexible electronics have gained significant research attention in recent years due to their potential applications as smart and functional materials. Typically, electroluminescence devices produced by hydrogel-based materials are among the most notable flexible electronics. With their excellent flexibility and their remarkable electrical, adaptable mechanical and self-healing properties, functional hydrogels offer a wealth of insights and opportunities for the fabrication of electroluminescent devices that can be easily integrated into wearable electronics for various applications. Various strategies have been developed and adapted to obtain functional hydrogels, and at the same time, high-performance electroluminescent devices have been fabricated based on these functional hydrogels. This review provides a comprehensive overview of various functional hydrogels that have been used for the development of electroluminescent devices. It also highlights some challenges and future research prospects for hydrogel-based electroluminescent devices.

A red-emitting Europium(III) complex as a luminescent probe with large Stokes shift for the sequential determination of Cu2+ and biothiols in real samples

In this work, a novel Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC) complex with red luminescence was designed and synthesized for sequential detection of Cu²⁺ and biothiols (Cys/Hcy/GSH) based on the displacement strategy with the good selectivity, high sensitivity, and large Stokes shift (288 nm). The possible detection mechanism was verified by UV-vis, the high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the fluorescence decay curve. The experimental parameters, including the solution pH, the incubation time, the concentration ratio of Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC) to Cu²⁺ and biothiols concentration, were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, it shows a good linear relationship between the concentration (0-10 μM) of Cu²⁺ and the fluorescence intensity of Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC), with a low detection limit of 0.065 μM. The linear range and the limit of detection of the Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC)/Cu²⁺ system for Cys/Hcy/GSH were 2.5-22.5/5-45/5-50 μM and 0.11/0.07/0.05 μM, respectively. Surprisingly, the high or low concentration of Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC)/Cu²⁺ can significantly affect the selectivity of the sensing system to biothiols (Cys/GSH/Hcy). When the concentration of the Eu³⁺-DTPA-bis(AMC)/Cu²⁺ system is 10.0 μΜ, it could recognize biothiols (Cys/GSH/Hcy) from other substances, but when the concentration is as low as 3.3 μM, it could further specifically distinguished Cys from Hcy/GSH. Owing to the high anti-interference characteristics, accuracy and specificity, the sensing system was well applied to the cascade detection of Cu²⁺ in actual environmental samples and Cys in biological and food samples, including FBS, urine, milk, beverage, fresh juice with the satisfactory recoveries from 96.20 to 106.80 %.

Switchable Supramolecular Configurations of Al3+/LysTPY Coordination Polymers in a Hydrogel Network Controlled by Ultrasound and Heat

Coordination-driven self-assembly with controllable properties has attracted increasing interest because of its potential in biological events and material science. Herein, we report on the remote, instant, and switchable control of competitive coordination interactions via ultrasound and heat stimuli in a hydrogel network. Configurational coordination changes result in the transformation of blue-emissive and opaque Al³⁺-amide aggregations to yellow-green-emissive and transparent Al³⁺-terpyridine aggregations. Interestingly, circularly polarized luminescence "off-on" switches of the metallo-supramolecular assembly are also created by these configuration changes. Additionally, the impact of the stoichiometric ratio of Al³⁺ and LysTPY on the assembly is also studied in detail. With a higher content of Al³⁺, the hydrogel with branched and abundant junctions exhibited robust, self-healing, and self-supporting properties. This in-depth understanding of the coordination interaction adjustment will afford new insights into the preparation of stimuli-responsive metallogels.

Paintable Hybrids with Thermally Stable Dual Emission Composed of Tetraphenylethene-Integrated POSS and MEH-PPV for Heat-Resistant White-Light Luminophores

Thermally stable dual emission followed by white-light luminescence from hybrid materials is reported. Hybrid films were prepared with a spin-coating method with the mixture solution containing tetraphenylethene (TPE)-integrated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV). TPE-tethered POSS (TPE-POSS) showed high compatibility with MEH-PPV. Therefore, homogeneous films with variable concentrations of TPE-POSS were obtained. Owing to good dispersion of rigid silica cubes into matrices, POSS-containing films demonstrated high thermal stability toward molecular rearrangement by annealing as well as pyrolysis, similar to conventional polymer hybrids. Furthermore, it was found that TPE-POSS was able to enhance emission efficiencies, probably by suppressing chain aggregation. By modulating introduction ratios of TPE-POSS, dual-emission properties followed by white-light luminescence composed of cyan and orange emissions from TPE-POSS and MEH-PPV, respectively, were accomplished. It should be noted that these color balances can be preserved even in the high-temperature region (425 K). Finally, white-light luminescent materials with thermal durability were obtained.

Anchoring Drugs to a Zinc(II) Coordination Polymer Network: Exploiting Structural Rationale toward the Design of Metallogels for Drug-Delivery Applications

A new series of coordination polymers (CPs) were synthesized and crystallographically characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with the aim of developing drug-delivery systems via metallogel formation. Structural rationale was employed to design such coordination-polymer-based metallogels. As many as nine CPs were obtained by reacting two bis(pyridyl)urea ligands, namely, 1,3-dipyridin-3-ylurea (3U) and 1,3-dipyridin-4-ylurea (4U), and the sodium salt of various nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, namely, ibuprofen (IBU), naproxen (NAP), fenoprofen (FEN), diclofenac (DIC), meclofenamic acid (MEC), mefenamic acid (MEF), and Zn(NO₃)₂. All of the CPs displayed 1D polymeric chains that were self-assembled through various hydrogen-bonding interactions involving the urea N-H and carboxylate O atoms and, in a few cases, lattice-occluded water molecules. The reacting components of the CPs produced five metallogels in dimethyl sulfoxide/water. The gels were characterized by rheology and transmission electron microscopy. Three selected metallogelators, namely, 3UMEFg, 3UNAPg, and 3UMECg, showed in vitro anticancer, cell imaging, and multidrug delivery for antibacterial applications, respectively. The shear-thinning properties of 3UMECg (rheoreversibility and injectability) make it a potential candidate for plausible topical application.

Multi-Responsive Lanthanide-Based Hydrogel with Encryption, Naked Eye Sensing, Shape Memory, Self-Healing, and Antibacterial Activity

In this work, we reported a multi-responsive luminescent hydrogel with properties of encryption, naked eye sensing of glucose, shape memory, self-healing, and antibacterial activity. The hydrogel (GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu³⁺) was obtained by mixing phenylboronic acid-modified gelatin (GA-DBA), catechol-modified carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS-PCA), 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA), and Eu³⁺ ions through a facile heating-cooling process. The resultant hydrogel exhibits reversible luminescence and color and phase changes in response to temperature, acid/base, salt, and redox stimuli. Based on the multiple responsiveness, information encryption and decryption, naked eye sensing of glucose, remarkable shape memory, and enhanced mechanical properties of the as-prepared hydrogel were realized. In addition, the self-healing capacity was also achieved due to the dynamic bonds in GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu³⁺ hydrogels. Specifically, the GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu³⁺ hydrogels possess antibacterial activity owing to the bacteriostasis of the CCS-PCA and DNSA/Eu³⁺ complex. Thus, GA/CCS/DNSA/Eu³⁺ hydrogels have potential applications in the fields of anticounterfeiting, wearable devices, biomedicine, sensing, etc.
