Interactive Effects of Lanthanum and Calcium on Cadmium Accumulation in Wheat with Special Reference to TaNramp5 Expression Regulated by Calmodulin

Bayesian risk prediction model: An accessible strategy to predict cadmium contamination risk in wheat grain grown in alkaline soils

Excessive cadmium (Cd) concentration in wheat grain is becoming a widespread concern in China. Considering the complexity of Cd transfer in the soil-wheat system, how the Cd risk in wheat grain be accurately predicted from the limited details available is of great significance for the risk management of Cd. Bayes' theory could leverage existing data by combining prior information and observational data, providing a promising strategy with which to calculate a more robust posterior probability of a grain sample exceeding the food safety standard (FSS) for Cd (0.1 mg kg-1). In the current study, a risk prediction model, based on Bayes' theory, was established to achieve a more accurate prediction of the wheat grain Cd risk from a limited number of soil parameters. The risk prediction model could predict the risk probability of wheat grain with a Cd concentration exceeding the FSS under a given soil concentration of either total Cd or diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Cd. Soil total Cd concentration proved to be a better variable for the model with greater predictive accuracy. The model predicted that fewer than 5% of the wheat grain would have a Cd concentration exceeding the FSS when grown in soil with a total Cd concentration of less than 0.299 mg kg-1. The risk probability rose significantly to 50% when the soil total Cd reached 0.778 mg kg-1. The accuracy of the model was greater than the widely applied multiple linear regression model, whereas previously published data from similar soil conditions also confirmed that the Bayesian model could predict wheat Cd risk with minimal error. The proposed model provides an accurate, accessible and cost-effective methodology for predicting Cd risk in wheat grown in alkaline soils before harvest. The wider application to other soil conditions, crops or contaminants using the Bayesian model is also promising for risk management authorities.

Application of oyster shell powder reduces cadmium accumulation by inhibiting the expression of genes responsible for cadmium uptake and translocation in rice

The application of waste oyster shell in agriculture is of extensive concern due to its benefits on improving yields and inhibiting cadmium (Cd) accumulation in edible parts of crops. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for oyster shell powder (OSP) that decreases Cd accumulation in crops remain poorly understood. This study explored the effects of OSP on growth and Cd accumulation in rice via pot experiments and hydroponics. Pot experiments showed that the application of 1 g·kg-1 OSP improved rice yields and decreased Cd concentrations in all tissues of rice, especially in grains, which was reduced by 43.5%. The pH was increased and the phytoavailability of Cd in soil was reduced by OSP supplementation. In addition, OSP also exhibited high dissolution of Ca, Fe, Zn, and Se. In hydroponics, OSP supply also suppressed Cd accumulation in rice and increased plant growth. Pretreatment with OSP inhibited the accumulation of Cd in the roots and shoots. Simultaneously, OSP reduced the content of Cd in the root cell sap, cell wall, and xylem sap, and downregulated the expression of OsNramp5, OsNramp1, OsIRT1, and OsHMA2. These findings suggested that the application of OSP could reduce Cd accumulation by inhibiting the expression of genes responsible for Cd absorption and xylem loading in rice.

Lanthanum Silicate Nanomaterials Enhance Sheath Blight Resistance in Rice: Mechanisms of Action and Soil Health Evaluation

In the current study, foliar spray with lanthanum (La) based nanomaterials (La10Si6O27 nanorods, La10Si6O27 nanoparticle, La(OH)3 nanorods, and La2O3 nanoparticle) suppressed the occurrence of sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) in rice. The beneficial effects were morphology-, composition-, and concentration-dependent. Foliar application of La10Si6O27 nanorods (100 mg/L) yielded the greatest disease suppression, significantly decreasing the disease severity by 62.4% compared with infected controls; this level of control was 2.7-fold greater than the commercially available pesticide (Thifluzamide). The order of efficacy was as follows: La10Si6O27 nanorods > La10Si6O27 nanoparticle > La(OH)3 nanorods > La2O3 nanoparticle. Mechanistically, (1) La10Si6O27 nanorods had greater bioavailability, slower dissolution, and simultaneous Si nutrient benefits; (2) transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that La10Si6O27 nanorods simultaneously strengthened rice systemic acquired resistance, physical barrier formation, and antioxidative systems. Additionally, La10Si6O27 nanorods improved rice yield by 35.4% and promoted the nutritional quality of the seeds as compared with the Thifluzamide treatment. A two-year La10Si6O27 nanorod exposure had no effect on soil health based on the evaluated chemical, physical, and biological soil properties. These findings demonstrate that La based nanomaterials can serve as an effective and sustainable strategy to safeguard crops and highlight the importance of nanomaterial composition and morphology in terms of optimizing benefit.

Foliar spray of La2O3 nanoparticles regulates the growth, antioxidant parameters, and nitrogen metabolism of fragrant rice seedlings in wet and dry nurseries

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely used in agriculture, and lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (La2O3) NPs can regulate plant growth. La2O3 NPs treatment was hypothesized to affect the accumulation and distribution of substances in rice seedlings under wet and dry nursery conditions. The objective of the present study was to ascertain the effects of La2O3 NPs foliar spray on the morphology and physiology of fragrant rice seedlings under wet and dry nursery conditions. Seedlings of two fragrant rice cultivars, namely 'Xiangyaxiangzhan' and 'Yuxiangyouzhan,' were grown under wet and dry nursery conditions with La2O3 NPs treatments at three concentrations (CK, La2O3 NPs 0 mg L-1; T1, La2O3 NPs 20 mg L-1; and T2, La2O3 NPs 40 mg L-1). The results showed that the seedling-raising method was significantly associated with La2O3 NPs application (P < 0.05), affecting the leaf area of both cultivars. Changes in plant morphological parameters, such as dry weight and root-shoot ratio, were the reasons for the differences in cultivars in response to La2O3 NPs application. Changes were also observed in the plant morphological and physiological parameters of leaf area, specific leaf area, chlorophyll contents, antioxidant properties, and activities of nitrogen metabolism enzymes. The relationship between morphological and physiological processes in fragrant rice was investigated to test the hypothesis. In both wet and dry nursery methods, the T2 concentration of La2O3 NPs was beneficial for rice seedlings and significantly increased their leaf area due to changes in morphological and physiological parameters. Therefore, the results of this study provide a theoretical basis for expanding the research on La2O3 NPs application in rice, as well as relevant references for strengthening rice seedlings in the nursery, which has a positive effect on the grain yield improvement in fragrant rice.

Nanomaterial Size and Surface Modification Mediate Disease Resistance Activation in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)

Crop disease represents a serious and increasing threat to global food security. Lanthanum oxide nanomaterials (La₂O₃ NMs) with different sizes (10 and 20 nm) and surface modifications (citrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone [PVP], and poly(ethylene glycol)) were investigated for their control of the fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum (Schl.) f. sp cucumerinum Owen on six-week-old cucumber (Cucumis sativus) in soil. Seed treatment and foliar application of the La₂O₃ NMs at 20-200 mg/kg (mg/L) significantly suppressed cucumber wilt (decreased by 12.50-52.11%), although the disease control efficacy was concentration-, size-, and surface modification-dependent. The best pathogen control was achieved by foliar application of 200 mg/L PVP-coated La₂O₃ NMs (10 nm); disease severity was decreased by 67.6%, and fresh shoot biomass was increased by 49.9% as compared with pathogen-infected control. Importantly, disease control efficacy was 1.97- and 3.61-fold greater than that of La₂O₃ bulk particles and a commercial fungicide (Hymexazol), respectively. Additionally, La₂O₃ NMs application enhanced cucumber yield by 350-461%, increased fruit total amino acids by 295-344%, and improved fruit vitamin content by 65-169% as compared with infected controls. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that La₂O₃ NMs: (1) interacted with calmodulin, subsequently activating salicylic acid-dependent systemic acquired resistance; (2) increased the activity and expression of antioxidant and related genes, thereby alleviating pathogen-induced oxidative stress; and (3) directly inhibited in vivo pathogen growth. The findings highlight the significant potential of La₂O₃ NMs for suppressing plant disease in sustainable agriculture.

Prediction of Cd Accumulation in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Simulation Calculation of Lime or Zn Fertilizer Remediated Soil

Soil Cd contamination to wheat raise wide concerns over food safety. It is essential to find the key factors affecting Cd accumulation in wheat and to establish a predictive model. The effects of pH, Zn, Ca, and DOM on the accumulation of Cd in wheat were investigated using hydroponic experiments. The results showed that Zn was the most important factor inhibiting Cd uptake in wheat. Models were developed to predict the Cd contents in wheat tissues based on the ion concentration. Meanwhile, the available Cd contents in soil were predicted using a geochemical multi-surface model (MSM) which is suitable for various soils and conditions. The combination of the hydroponic accumulation model and MSM exhibits good predictions of wheat-Cd (R² = 0.822-0.862, RMSE = 0.317-0.533). The results of this study can quantitatively predict the accumulation of Cd in wheat and provide a reference for soil remediation and safe wheat production.
