Abstract
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L. or Elaeagnus rhamnoides L.) is a plant that has long been used as a Chinese herbal medicine. This species is known to contain numerous bioactive components, including polyphenols, fatty acids, vitamins, and phytosterols, which may be responsible for its medicinal value. In experiments both in vitro and in vivo (ranging from cell lines to animal models and human patients), sea buckthorn has shown positive effects on symptoms of metabolic syndrome; evidence suggests that sea buckthorn treatment can decrease blood lipid content, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, and regulate key metabolites. This article reviews the main bioactive compounds present in sea buckthorn and discusses their efficacy in treating metabolic syndrome. Specifically, we highlight bioactive compounds isolated from distinct sea buckthorn tissues; their effects on abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia; and their potential mechanisms of action in clinical applications. This review provides key insight into the benefits of sea buckthorn, promoting future research of this species and expansion of sea buckthorn-based therapies for metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The current study characterized the combating memory impairment effect of seabuckthorn seed protein (SSP) and the arginine (Arg)-enriched peptides (SSPP) on d-galactose-induced brain aging in mice. The Arg content in SSP and SSPP were 10.11 and 17.82 g/100 g, respectively. Seven Arg peptides (Ile/Leu-Arg, Arg-Glu, Asp-Arg-Pro, Arg-Try-Ala, Glu-Arg-Ser, Val-Gly-Arg-Pro, and Lys-Thr-Glu-Arg) were identified from SSPP. The animal experiments of the Morris water maze and the step-down test indicated that the oral administration of SSP (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 mg/g·d) and SSPP (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 mg/g·d) significantly (p < 0.05) reversed the learning and memory impairment symptoms. The activation of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase and neuronal NO synthase were increased, and inducible NO synthase decreased after SSP and SSPP in the hippocampus compared to the model group, with the SSPP being quite effective. Moreover, the treatment significantly exhibited the ability to normalize the serum inflammatory cytokine levels (NF-ĸB, TNF-α, IL-6) and suppress the Arg-inducible nitric oxide (Arg-iNO) pathway. Therefore, SSP and SSPP ingestion reversed the behavioral learning and memory impairment symptoms possibly associated with the anti-inflammation and Arg-iNO pathway. Consumption of SSP and SSPP diets can be beneficial to memory impairment.

Abstract
This study aimed to obtain three Trp-containing peptides from β-lactoglobulin and study their effects on anxiety-like behaviors in zebrafish. Three Trp-containing peptides were prepared from β-lactoglobulin by selective enzymatic hydrolysis and identified by UPLC-Q-TOF MS/MS. The anxiety-like behaviors of zebrafish were reduced after two weeks of administrated of β-lactoglobulin Trp peptides (LAWP), VAGTWY, VAGTW and G TW(concentration of 56 μg/mL or 500 μg/mL). As an index of serotonergic activity, we assessed the enhancing abilities of 5-HT synthesis. The treatment remarkably enhanced the 5-HT synthesis by upregulation of Trp concentration and Trp hydroxylase activation. In addition, this study further validated the anti-anxiety effects of whey protein hydrolysate with a high Trp index in animal and the experimental results were consistent with those reported in previous studies. Our results showed that β-lactoglobulin Trp peptides ingestion has a significant anti-anxiety effect as evidenced by the increasing Trp concentration, TPH activation and 5-HT level compared to the control group, with the VAGTW being the more effective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Branched chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation may influence glucose metabolism in individuals with impaired glycemic profile. This systematic review investigated the effects of isolated BCAA supplementation on measures of glucose homeostasis in individuals with hepatic disorders. METHODS We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus for published clinical trials that investigated the effects of isolated BCAA supplementation on measures of glucose homeostasis, including serum glucose and insulin, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) scores. RESULTS Eleven trials met the inclusion criteria. Only one study revealed a decrease in serum glucose from BCAA supplementation compared to three studies that showed increases. Five studies demonstrated no significant changes in serum glucose, and two studies displayed no changes in HbA1c following BCAA supplementation. Serum levels of insulin were decreased in three studies, remained unchanged in one, whilst increased in the remaining three studies. BCAA supplementation reduced HOMA-IR scores in two studies, increased HOMA-IR scores in another two or resulted in no changes in two other studies. CONCLUSIONS BCAA supplementation in isolation had no effect on overall glucose homeostasis in individuals with hepatic disorders, although some improvements on serum insulin levels and HOMA-IR scores were observed. Overall, there is little evidence to support the utilization of BCAA supplementation as a potential nutritional strategy for improving measures of glucose homeostasis in individuals with hepatic disorders. Abstract
As part of the slaughtering processing in Taiwan, approximately 10,000 metric tons of broiler livers are produced yearly. However, these livers are regarded as waste. Our team has successfully developed a functional chicken-liver hydrolysate (CLH) with several useful activities. It has been reported that there is a positive relationship between diabetes mellitus (DM) patients and cognitive decline. To maximize broiler-livers' utilization and add value, we investigated the modulative effects of the CLHs on glucose homeostasis and cognitive decline in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic mice. After a 9-wk experiment, CLH supplementation lowered blood glucose by increasing GLUT4 protein expressions in the brains, livers, and muscles of STZ-induced mice (P < 0.05). CLHs also enhanced antioxidant capacities in the livers and brains of STZ-induced mice. Amended memory and alternation behavior were tested by using water and Y-maze assays (P < 0.05). Besides, STZ-induced mice with CLH supplementation had less contracted neuron bodies in the hippocampus and lower (P < 0.05) Aβ depositions in the dentate gyrus area. Less AGE accumulation and apoptosis-related proteins (RAGE, JNK, and activated Caspase 3) in the brains of STZ-induced mice were also detected by supplementing CLHs (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the results from this study offer not only scientific evidence on the amelioration of insulin resistance and cognitive decline in hyperglycemia but also add value to this byproduct.

Abstract
AIMS Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are often emphasized in the diets of avid exercisers, yet population data demonstrates a correlation between circulating BCAA and insulin resistance. However, it is unclear if BCAA independently promote insulin resistance in otherwise healthy cells. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a BCAA mixture on muscle insulin signaling in vitro in both insulin resistant and sensitive cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS C2C12 myotubes were treated with a BCAA mixture containing leucine:isoleucine:valine at a ratio of 2:1:1 at 0.2, 2, or 20 mM (based on leucine content) for either 30 min, 1 day, or 6 days. Western blot was used to assess insulin sensitivity of cells treated with BCAA both with and without concurrent insulin resistance, and, with and without insulin stimulation. RESULTS BCAA treatment for 1 day significantly reduced basal, but not insulin-stimulated pAkt expression. BCAA treatment for 6 days resulted in significantly reduced basal insulin signaling in healthy cells and insulin-stimulated insulin signaling in insulin resistant (but not insulin sensitive) cells. CONCLUSION Similar to previous observations demonstrating BCAA may correlate with insulin resistance during metabolically stressed conditions, we demonstrate excessively high BCAA exposure can negatively influence basal insulin signaling, as well as insulin sensitivity in insulin resistant myotubes. However, given the intentionally high concentrations of BCAA used in this study, the extent to which these observations translate to in vivo models is unclear and warrants further investigation.
