Wax Formation in Linear and Branched Alkanes with Dissipative Particle Dynamics

"Sounding" out crystal nuclei-A mathematical-physical and experimental investigation

We outline techniques for the control and measurement of the nucleation of crystalline materials. Small angle x-ray scattering/wide angle x-ray scattering x-ray diffraction measurements are presented that demonstrate the impact of low power, continuous, non-cavitational ultrasound on the nucleation and crystallization of a wax-n-eicosane dissolved in a heptane/toluene solvent. A mathematical-physical approach based on the rectification of heat and mass transport by such a low power oscillating pressure field is outlined, and it is suggested that this approach be combined with dissipative particle dynamics computational modeling to develop a predictive method capable of modeling the impact of low power oscillating pressure fields (acoustics and ultrasonics) on a wide range of nucleating systems. Combining the ultrasound pitch and catch speed of sound measurements with low power harmonically oscillating pressure fields to monitor and control nucleation presents the prospect of entirely new industrially significant methods of process control in crystallization. It also offers new insights into nucleation processes in general. However, for the acoustic control technique to be widely applied , further theoretical and modeling work will be necessary since, at present, we are unable to predict the precise effect of low power ultrasound in any given situation.

Phase Behavior of Alkyl Ethoxylate Surfactants in a Dissipative Particle Dynamics Model

We present a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) model capable of capturing the liquid state phase behavior of nonionic surfactants from the alkyl ethoxylate (C_nE_m) family. The model is based upon our recent work [Anderson et al. J. Chem. Phys. 2017, 147, 094503] but adopts tighter control of the molecular structure by setting the bond angles with guidance from molecular dynamics simulations. Changes to the geometry of the surfactants were shown to have little effect on the predicted micelle properties of sampled surfactants, or the water-octanol partition coefficients of small molecules, when compared to the original work. With these modifications the model is capable of reproducing the binary water-surfactant phase behavior of nine surfactants (C₈E₄, C₈E₅, C₈E₆, C₁₀E₄, C₁₀E₆, C₁₀E₈, C₁₂E₆, C₁₂E₈, and C₁₂E₁₂) with a good degree of accuracy.

Modeling Alkyl Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Dissipative Particle Dynamics

Building on previous work studying alkanes, we develop a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) model to capture the behavior of the alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon family under ambient conditions of 298 K and 1 atmosphere. Such materials are of significant worldwide industrial importance in applications such as solvents, chemical intermediates, surfactants, lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, and greases. We model both liquids and waxy solids for molecules up to 36 carbons in size and demonstrate that we can correctly capture both the freezing transition and liquid-phase densities in pure substances and mixtures. We also demonstrate the importance of including specialized bead types into the DPD model (rather than solely relying on generic bead types) to capture specific local geometrical constructs such as the benzene ring found in the benzyl chemical group; this can be thought of as representing subtle real-world many-body effects via customized pairwise non-bonded potentials.

Mesoscale Modeling of Agglomeration of Molecular Bottlebrushes: Focus on Conformations and Clustering Criteria

Using dissipative particle dynamics, we characterize dynamics of aggregation of molecular bottlebrushes in solvents of various qualities by tracking the number of clusters, the size of the largest cluster, and an average aggregation number. We focus on a low volume fraction of bottlebrushes in a range of solvents and probe three different cutoff criteria to identify bottlebrushes belonging to the same cluster. We demonstrate that the cutoff criteria which depend on both the coordination number and the length of the side chain allows one to correlate the agglomeration status with the structural characteristics of bottlebrushes in solvents of various qualities. We characterize conformational changes of the bottlebrush within the agglomerates with respect to those of an isolated bottlebrush in the same solvents. The characterization of bottlebrush conformations within the agglomerates is an important step in understanding the relationship between the bottlebrush architecture and material properties. An analysis of three distinct cutoff criteria to identify bottlebrushes belonging to the same cluster introduces a framework to identify both short-lived transient and long-lived agglomerates; the same approach could be further extended to characterize agglomerates of various macromolecules with complex architectures beyond the specific bottlebrush architecture considered herein.

Controlling Degradation and Erosion of Polymer Networks: Insights from Mesoscale Modeling

Understanding and controlling degradation of polymer networks on the mesoscale is critical for a range of applications. We utilize dissipative particle dynamics to capture photocontrolled degradation and erosion processes in hydrogels formed by end-linking of four-arm polyethylene glycol precursors. We demonstrate that the polydispersity and the fraction of broken-off fragments scale with the relative extent of reaction. The reverse gel point measured is close to the value predicted by the bond percolation theory on a diamond lattice. We characterize the erosion process via tracking the mass loss that accounts for the fragments remaining in contact with the percolated network. We quantify the dependence of the mass loss on the extent of reaction and on the properties of the film prior to degradation. These results elucidate the main features of degradation and erosion on the mesoscale and could provide guidelines for future design of degrading materials with dynamically controlled properties.

Native-Based Dissipative Particle Dynamics Approach for α-Helical Folding

We developed a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) approach that captures polyalanine folding into a stable helical conformation. Within the proposed native-based approach, the DPD parameters are derived based on the contact map constructed from the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We show that the proposed approach reproduces the folding of polypeptides of various lengths, including bundle formation for sufficiently long polypeptides. The proposed approach also allows one to capture the folding of the helical segments of the lysozyme. With further development of computationally efficient native-based DPD approaches for folding, modeling of a range of biomaterials incorporating α-helical segments could be extended to time and length scales far beyond those accessible in molecular dynamics simulations.
