Soft X-ray Spectroscopy Simulations with Multiconfigurational Wave Function Theory: Spectrum Completeness, Sub-eV Accuracy, and Quantitative Reproduction of Line Shapes

Long-range Corrected Density Functional Theory Including a Two-Gaussian Hartree-Fock Operator for High Accuracy Core-excitation Energy Calculations of Both the Second- and Third-Row Atoms (LC2gau-core-BOP)

In the previous work, LCgau-core-BOP, which includes the short-range interelectronic Gaussian attenuating Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange to the long-range HF exchange, showed high accuracy core-excitation energies from 1s orbitals of the second-row atoms (1s → π*, 1s → σ*, 1s → n*, and 1s → Rydberg), but underestimates the core-excitation energies from 1s orbitals of the third-row atoms. To improve this, we added one more Gaussian attenuating HF exchange to LCgau-core-BOP. We named it LC2gau-core-BOP, which achieves a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.6 and 0.3 eV for core excitation energies of the second- and third-row atoms of the tested small molecules, respectively. We found that the inclusion of the short-range interelectronic HF exchange at a distance ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 a.u. contributes to the increase of performances on 1s orbital energy calculations of the second-row atoms, while the inclusion of more short-range interelectronic HF exchange at a distance ranging from 0 to 0.2 a.u. does to the increase of performance on 1s orbital energy calculations of the third-row atoms. It is notable that all of these improvements were accomplished using flexible Gaussian attenuating HF exchange inclusion. LC2gau-core-BOP shows deviations of less than 0.8 eV from experimental values for all of the core-excitation energies of the tested medium-size molecules consisting of thymine, oxazole, glycine, and dibenzothiophene sulfone. Moreover, by optimizing one parameter of the OP correlation functional, LC2gau-core-BOP provides atomization energies over the G3 test set with an accuracy comparable to that of B3LYP.

Toward Consistent Predictions of Core/Valence Ionization Potentials and Valence Excitation Energies by MRSF-TDDFT

Optimizing exchange-correlation functionals for both core/valence ionization potentials (cIPs/vIPs) and valence excitation energies (VEEs) at the same time in the framework of MRSF-TDDFT is self-contradictory. To overcome the challenge, within the previous "adaptive exact exchange" or double-tuning strategy on Coulomb-attenuating XC functionals (CAM), a new XC functional specifically for cIPs and vIPs was first developed by enhancing exact exchange to both short- and long-range regions. The resulting DTCAM-XI functional achieved remarkably high accuracy in its predictions with errors of less than half eV. An additional concept of "valence attenuation", where the amount of exact exchange for the frontier orbital regions is selectively suppressed, was introduced to consistently predict both VEEs and IPs at the same time. The second functional, DTCAM-XIV, exhibits consistent overall prediction accuracy at ∼0.64 eV. By preferentially optimizing VEEs within the same "valence attenuation" concept, a third functional, DTCAM-VAEE, was obtained, which exhibits improved performance as compared to that of the previous DTCAM-VEE and DTCAM-AEE in the prediction of VEEs, making it an attractive alternative to BH&HLYP. As the combination of "adaptive exchange" and "valence attenuation" is operative, it would be exciting to explore its potential with a more tunable framework in the future.

TDDFT and the x-ray absorption spectrum of liquid water: Finding the "best" functional

We investigate the performance of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) for reproducing high-level reference x-ray absorption spectra of liquid water and water clusters. For this, we apply the integrated absolute difference (IAD) metric, previously used for x-ray emission spectra of liquid water [T. Fransson and L. G. M. Pettersson, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 19, 7333-7342 (2023)], in order to investigate which exchange-correlation (xc) functionals yield TDDFT spectra in best agreement to reference, as well as to investigate the suitability of IAD for x-ray absorption spectroscopy spectrum calculations. Considering highly asymmetric and symmetric six-molecule clusters, it is seen that long-range corrected xc-functionals are required to yield good agreement with the reference coupled cluster (CC) and algebraic-diagrammatic construction spectra, with 100% asymptotic Hartree-Fock exchange resulting in the lowest IADs. The xc-functionals with best agreement to reference have been adopted for larger water clusters, yielding results in line with recently published CC theory, but which still show some discrepancies in the relative intensity of the features compared to experiment.

Simulating transient X-ray photoelectron spectra of Fe(CO)5 and its photodissociation products with multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory

Accurate simulations of transient X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) provide unique opportunities to bridge the gap between theory and experiment in understanding the photoactivated dynamics in molecules and materials. However, simulating X-ray photoelectron spectra along a photochemical reaction pathway is challenging as it requires accurate description of electronic structure incorporating core-hole screening, orbital relaxation, electron correlation, and spin-orbit coupling in excited states or at nonequilibrium ground-state geometries. In this work, we employ the recently developed multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory (MR-ADC) to investigate the core-ionized states and X-ray photoelectron spectra of Fe(CO)5 and its photodissociation products (Fe(CO)4, Fe(CO)3) following excitation with 266 nm light. The simulated transient Fe 3p and CO 3σ XPS spectra incorporating spin-orbit coupling and high-order electron correlation effects are shown to be in a good agreement with the experimental measurements by Leitner et al. [J. Chem. Phys., 2018, 149, 044307]. Our calculations suggest that core-hole screening, spin-orbit coupling, and ligand-field splitting effects are similarly important in reproducing the experimentally observed chemical shifts in transient Fe 3p XPS spectra of iron carbonyl complexes. Our results also demonstrate that the MR-ADC methods can be very useful in interpreting the transient XPS spectra of transition metal compounds.

Toward a Stochastic Complete Active Space Second-Order Perturbation Theory

In this work, an internally contracted stochastic complete active space second-order perturbation theory, stochastic-CASPT2, is reported. The method relies on stochastically sampled reduced density matrices (RDMs) up to rank four and contractions thereof with the generalized Fock matrix. A new protocol for calculating higher-order RDMs in full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) has been designed based on (1) restricting sampling of the corresponding excitations to a deterministic subspace, (2) averaging the RDMs from independent dynamics and (3) projecting them onto the closest positive semi-definite matrix. Our protocol avoids previously encountered numerical conditioning problems in the orthogonalization of the perturber overlap matrix stemming from numerical noise. The chromium dimer CASSCF(12,12)/CASPT2 binding curve is computed as a proof of concept.

Time-Resolved X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy: An MCTDH Quantum Dynamics Protocol

Expressions for linear and nonlinear spectroscopy simulation in the X-ray window in which the time evolution of a photoexcited molecular system is treated via quantum dynamics are derived. By leveraging on the peculiar properties of core-excited/ionized states, first- and third-order response functions are recast in the limit of time-scale separation between the extremely short core-state lifetime and the (comparably longer) electronic-state transfer and nuclear vibrational motion. This work is a natural extension of Segatta et al. (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2023, 19, 2075-2091), in which some of the present authors coupled MCTDH quantum dynamics to spectroscopy simulation at different levels of sophistication. Full quantum dynamics and approximate expressions are compared by simulating X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy at the carbon K-edge in the pyrene molecule.

Complex Linear Response Functions for a Multiconfigurational Self-Consistent Field Wave Function in a High Performance Computing Environment

We present novel developments for the highly efficient evaluation of complex linear response functions of a multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) wave function as implemented in MultiPsi. Specifically, expressions for the direct evaluation of linear response properties at given frequencies using the complex polarization propagator (CPP) approach have been implemented, within both the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) and the random phase approximation (RPA). Purely real algebra with symmetric and antisymmetric trial vectors in a shared subspace is used wherein the linear response equations are solved. Two bottlenecks of large scale MC-CPP calculations, namely, the memory footprint and computational time, are addressed. The former is addressed by limiting the size of the subspace of trial vectors by using singular value decomposition (SVD) on either orbital or CI subspaces. The latter is addressed using an efficient parallel implementation as well as the strategy of dynamically adding linear response equations at near-convergence to neighboring roots. Furthermore, a novel methodology for decomposing MC-CPP spectra in terms of intuitive orbital excitations in an approximate fashion is presented. The performance of the code is illustrated with several numerical examples, including the X-ray spectrum of a molecule with nearly one hundred atoms. Additionally, for X-ray spectroscopy, the effect of including or excluding the core orbital in the active space on small covalent metal complexes is discussed.

Tuning UV Pump X-ray Probe Spectroscopy on the Nitrogen K Edge Reveals the Radiationless Relaxation of Pyrazine: Ab Initio Simulations Using the Quasiclassical Doorway-Window Approximation

Transient absorption UV pump X-ray probe spectroscopy has been established as a versatile technique for the exploration of ultrafast photoinduced dynamics in valence-excited states. In this work, an ab initio theoretical framework for the simulation of time-resolved UV pump X-ray probe spectra is presented. The method is based on the description of the radiation-matter interaction in the classical doorway-window approximation and a surface-hopping algorithm for the nonadiabatic nuclear excited-state dynamics. Using the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction scheme for excited states, UV pump X-ray probe signals were simulated for the carbon and nitrogen K edges of pyrazine, assuming a duration of 5 fs of the UV pump and X-ray probe pulses. It is predicted that spectra measured at the nitrogen K edge carry much richer information about the ultrafast nonadiabatic dynamics in the valence-excited states of pyrazine than those measured at the carbon K edge.

Electron and ion spectroscopy of azobenzene in the valence and core shells

Azobenzene is a prototype and a building block of a class of molecules of extreme technological interest as molecular photo-switches. We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of its response to irradiation with light across the UV to x-ray spectrum. The study of valence and inner shell photo-ionization and excitation processes combined with measurement of valence photoelectron-photoion coincidence and mass spectra across the core thresholds provides a detailed insight into the site- and state-selected photo-induced processes. Photo-ionization and excitation measurements are interpreted via the multi-configurational restricted active space self-consistent field method corrected by second order perturbation theory. Using static modeling, we demonstrate that the carbon and nitrogen K edges of azobenzene are suitable candidates for exploring its photoinduced dynamics thanks to the transient signals appearing in background-free regions of the NEXAFS and XPS.

Mixed-Reference Spin-Flip Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory for Accurate X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

It is demonstrated that the challenging core-hole particle (CHP) orbital relaxation for core electron spectra can be readily achieved by the mixed-reference spin-flip (MRSF)-time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). With the additional scalar relativistic effects on K-edge excitation energies of 24 second- and 17 third-row molecules, the particular ΔCHP-MRSF(R) exhibited near perfect predictions with RMSE ∼0.5 eV, featuring a median value of 0.3 and an interquartile range of 0.4. Overall, the CHP effect is 2-4 times stronger than relativistic ones, contributing more than 20 eV in the cases of sulfur and chlorine third-row atoms. Such high precision allows to explain the splitting and spectral shapes of O, N, and C atom K-edges in the ground state of thymine with atom as well as orbital specific accuracy. The same protocol with a double hole particle relaxation also produced remarkably accurate K-edge spectra of core to valence hole excitation energies from the first (n_O8π*) and second (ππ*) excited states of thymine, confirming the assignment of 1s → n excitation for the experimentally observed 526.4 eV peak. Regarding both accuracy and practicality, therefore, MRSF-TDDFT provides a promising protocol for core electron spectra of both ground and excited electronic states alike.

Vibrationally-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectra of Six Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from First-Principles Simulations

Vibrationally resolved C 1s X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of a series of six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; phenanthrene, coronene, naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, and pentacene) were computed by combining the full core hole density functional theory and the Franck-Condon simulations with the inclusion of the Duschinsky rotation effect. Simulated spectra of phenanthrene, coronene, and naphthalene agree well with experiments both in core binding energies (BEs) and profiles, which validate the accuracy of our predictions for the rest molecules with no high-resolution experiments. We found that three types of carbons i (inner C), p (peripheral C bonded to three C atoms), and h (peripheral C bonded to an H atom) show decreasing BEs. In linear PAHs (the latter four), h-type carbons further split into h1 or h2 (on inner or edge benzene ring) subtypes with chemical shifts of ca. 0.2-0.4 eV. All major Franck-Condon-active modes are characterized to be in-plane vibrations: low-frequency (<800 cm^-1) C-C ring deformation modes play an essential role in determining the peak asymmetries; and for each h-type carbon a high-frequency (ca. 3600 cm^-1) C*-H stretching mode is responsible for the high-energy tail. We found that core ionization leads to reduction of all C*-C and C*-H bond lengths and ring deformation with a definite direction. Based on theoretical spectra of four linear PAHs, we found asymptotic relations and anticipated possible spectral features for even larger linear PAHs. Our calculations provide accurate reference spectra for XPS characterizations of PAHs, which are useful in understanding the vibronic coupling effects in this family.
