Regularized Localized Molecular Orbitals in a Divide-and-Conquer Approach for Linear Scaling Calculations

Excitation configuration analysis for divide-and-conquer excited-state calculation method using dynamical polarizability

The authors previously developed a divide-and-conquer (DC)-based non-local excited-state calculation method for large systems using dynamical polarizability [Nakai and Yoshikawa, J. Chem. Phys. 146, 124123 (2017)]. This method evaluates the excitation energies and oscillator strengths using information on the dynamical polarizability poles. This article proposes a novel analysis of the previously developed method to obtain further configuration information on excited states, including excitation and de-excitation coefficients of each excitation configuration. Numerical applications to simple molecules, such as ethylene, hydrogen molecule, ammonia, and pyridazine, confirmed that the proposed analysis could accurately reproduce the excitation and de-excitation coefficients. The combination with the DC scheme enables both the local and non-local excited states of large systems with an excited nature to be treated.

How delocalized are the polyacenes?

In an attempt to quantify electron delocalization in polyacenes with up to 50 carbon atoms, we have performed self-consistent field calculations in which the π electrons are constrained to occupy highly localized molecular orbitals (HILOs) centered on a maximum of two, six or ten adjacent carbon atoms. We have also performed similar calculations on simple polyacene analogs consisting only of hydrogen atoms and exhibiting electron delocalization in the σ framework. We find that the energetic cost of localizing the π electrons in the polyacenes is roughly 60, 5 or 0.1 kJ/mol per ring atom for the two-, six- and ten-atom HILOs, respectively, and the use of these localized models overestimates the predicted hydrogenation energies of the acenes by roughly 50%, 4% and 0.1%, respectively. We conclude that the chemistry of polyacenes can be modeled well using highly localized descriptions of the π electrons.

Divide-and-Conquer Linear-Scaling Quantum Chemical Computations

Fragmentation and embedding schemes are of great importance when applying quantum-chemical calculations to more complex and attractive targets. The divide-and-conquer (DC)-based quantum-chemical model is a fragmentation scheme that can be connected to embedding schemes. This feature article explains several DC-based schemes developed by the authors over the last two decades, which was inspired by the pioneering study of DC self-consistent field (SCF) method by Yang and Lee (J. Chem. Phys. 1995, 103, 5674-5678). First, the theoretical aspects of the DC-based SCF, electron correlation, excited-state, and nuclear orbital methods are described, followed by the two-component relativistic theory, quantum-mechanical molecular dynamics simulation, and the introduction of three programs, including DC-based schemes. Illustrative applications confirmed the accuracy and feasibility of the DC-based schemes.

Bethe Salpeter Equation Spectra for Very Large Systems

We present a highly efficient method for the extraction of optical properties of very large molecules via the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The crutch of this approach is the calculation of the action of the effective Coulombic interaction, $W$, through a stochastic TD Hartree propagation, which uses only 10 stochastic orbitals rather than propagating the full sea of occupied states. This leads to a scaling that is at most cubic in system size, with trivial parallelization of the calculation. We apply this new method to calculate the spectra and electronic density of the dominant excitons of a carbon-nanohoop bound fullerene system with 520 electrons, using less than 4000 core hours.
