Coordinate Descent Full Configuration Interaction for Excited States

An efficient excited state method, named xCDFCI, in the configuration interaction framework is proposed. xCDFCI extends the unconstrained nonconvex optimization problem in coordinate descent full configuration interaction (CDFCI) to a multicolumn version for low-lying excited states computation. The optimization problem is addressed via a tailored coordinate descent method. In each iteration, a determinant is selected based on an approximated gradient, and coefficients of all states associated with the selected determinant are updated. A deterministic compression is applied to limit memory usage. We test xCDFCI applied to H2O and N2 molecules under the cc-pVDZ basis set. For both systems, five low-lying excited states in the same symmetry sector are calculated, together with the ground state. xCDFCI also produces accurate binding curves of the carbon dimer in the cc-pVDZ basis with chemical accuracy, where the ground state and four excited states in the same symmetry sector are benchmarked.

On the potentially transformative role of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo in quantum chemistry: A highly accurate method for transition metals and beyond

Approximate solutions to the ab initio electronic structure problem have been a focus of theoretical and computational chemistry research for much of the past century, with the goal of predicting relevant energy differences to within "chemical accuracy" (1 kcal/mol). For small organic molecules, or in general, for weakly correlated main group chemistry, a hierarchy of single-reference wave function methods has been rigorously established, spanning perturbation theory and the coupled cluster (CC) formalism. For these systems, CC with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples is known to achieve chemical accuracy, albeit at O(N⁷) computational cost. In addition, a hierarchy of density functional approximations of increasing formal sophistication, known as Jacob's ladder, has been shown to systematically reduce average errors over large datasets representing weakly correlated chemistry. However, the accuracy of such computational models is less clear in the increasingly important frontiers of chemical space including transition metals and f-block compounds, in which strong correlation can play an important role in reactivity. A stochastic method, phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC), has been shown to be capable of producing chemically accurate predictions even for challenging molecular systems beyond the main group, with relatively low O(N³ - N⁴) cost and near-perfect parallel efficiency. Herein, we present our perspectives on the past, present, and future of the ph-AFQMC method. We focus on its potential in transition metal quantum chemistry to be a highly accurate, systematically improvable method that can reliably probe strongly correlated systems in biology and chemical catalysis and provide reference thermochemical values (for future development of density functionals or interatomic potentials) when experiments are either noisy or absent. Finally, we discuss the present limitations of the method and where we expect near-term development to be most fruitful.

Full Configuration Interaction Excited-State Energies in Large Active Spaces from Subspace Iteration with Repeated Random Sparsification

We present a stable and systematically improvable quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) approach to calculating excited-state energies, which we implement using our fast randomized iteration method for the full configuration interaction problem (FCI-FRI). Unlike previous excited-state quantum Monte Carlo methods, our approach, which is based on an asymmetric variant of subspace iteration, avoids the use of dot products of random vectors and instead relies upon trial vectors to maintain orthogonality and estimate eigenvalues. By leveraging recent advances, we apply our method to calculate ground- and excited-state energies of challenging molecular systems in large active spaces, including the carbon dimer with 8 electrons in 108 orbitals (8e,108o), an oxo-Mn(salen) transition metal complex (28e,28o), ozone (18e,87o), and butadiene (22e,82o). In the majority of these test cases, our approach yields total excited-state energies that agree with those from state-of-the-art methods─including heat-bath CI, the density matrix renormalization group approach, and FCIQMC─to within sub-milliHartree accuracy. In all cases, estimated excitation energies agree to within about 0.1 eV.
