Combining Renormalized Singles GW Methods with the Bethe-Salpeter Equation for Accurate Neutral Excitation Energies

BSE@GW Prediction of Charge Transfer Exciton in Molecular Complexes: Assessment of Self-Energy and Exchange-Correlation Dependence

The Bethe-Salpeter equation using the GW approximation to the self-energy (BSE@GW) is a computationally attractive method for studying electronic excitation from first principles within the many-body Green's function theory framework. We examine its dependence on the underlying exchange-correlation (XC) approximation as well as on the GW approximation for predicting the charge transfer exciton formation at representative type-II interfaces between molecular systems of tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone (TCBQ) and acene derivatives. For the XC approximation, we consider several widely used generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and hybrid GGA functionals. For the GW self-energy approximation, we examine the recently proposed renormalized singles approach by Yang and coauthors [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2019, 10 (3), 447-452; J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2022, 18, 7570-7585] in addition to other commonly employed approximated GW schemes. We demonstrate a reliable prediction of the charge transfer exciton within the BSE@GW level of theory.

Non-linear light-matter interactions from the Bethe-Salpeter equation

A route to assess non-linear light-matter interactions from the increasingly popular GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) method is outlined. In the present work, the necessary analytic expressions within the static-screened exchange approximation of the BSE are derived. This enables a straightforward implementation of the computation of the first hyperpolarizability as well as two-photon absorption processes for molecular systems. Benchmark calculations on small molecular systems reveal that the GW-BSE method is intriguingly accurate for predicting both first hyperpolarizabilities and two-photon absorption strengths. Using state-of-the-art Kohn-Sham references as a starting point, the accuracy of the GW-BSE method rivals that of the coupled-cluster singles-and-doubles method, outperforming both second-order coupled-cluster and time-dependent density-functional theory.

Benchmarking the accuracy of the separable resolution of the identity approach for correlated methods in the numeric atom-centered orbitals framework

Four-center two-electron Coulomb integrals routinely appear in electronic structure algorithms. The resolution-of-the-identity (RI) is a popular technique to reduce the computational cost for the numerical evaluation of these integrals in localized basis-sets codes. Recently, Duchemin and Blase proposed a separable RI scheme [J. Chem. Phys. 150, 174120 (2019)], which preserves the accuracy of the standard global RI method with the Coulomb metric and permits the formulation of cubic-scaling random phase approximation (RPA) and GW approaches. Here, we present the implementation of a separable RI scheme within an all-electron numeric atom-centered orbital framework. We present comprehensive benchmark results using the Thiel and the GW100 test set. Our benchmarks include atomization energies from Hartree-Fock, second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2), coupled-cluster singles and doubles, RPA, and renormalized second-order perturbation theory, as well as quasiparticle energies from GW. We found that the separable RI approach reproduces RI-free HF calculations within 9 meV and MP2 calculations within 1 meV. We have confirmed that the separable RI error is independent of the system size by including disordered carbon clusters up to 116 atoms in our benchmarks.

Linear Scaling Calculations of Excitation Energies with Active-Space Particle-Particle Random-Phase Approximation

We developed an efficient active-space particle-particle random-phase approximation (ppRPA) approach to calculate accurate charge-neutral excitation energies of molecular systems. The active-space ppRPA approach constrains both indexes in particle and hole pairs in the ppRPA matrix, which only selects frontier orbitals with dominant contributions to low-lying excitation energies. It employs the truncation in both orbital indexes in the particle-particle and the hole-hole spaces. The resulting matrix, whose eigenvalues are excitation energies, has a dimension that is independent of the size of the systems. The computational effort for the excitation energy calculation, therefore, scales linearly with system size and is negligible compared with the ground-state calculation of the (N - 2)-electron system, where N is the electron number of the molecule. With the active space consisting of 30 occupied and 30 virtual orbitals, the active-space ppRPA approach predicts the excitation energies of valence, charge-transfer, Rydberg, double, and diradical excitations with the mean absolute errors (MAEs) smaller than 0.03 eV compared with the full-space ppRPA results. As a side product, we also applied the active-space ppRPA approach in the renormalized singles (RS) T-matrix approach. Combining the non-interacting pair approximation that approximates the contribution to the self-energy outside the active space, the active-space GRSTRS@PBE approach predicts accurate absolute and relative core-level binding energies with the MAEs around 1.58 and 0.3 eV, respectively. The developed linear scaling calculation of excitation energies is promising for applications to large and complex systems.

Exploring Bethe-Salpeter Excited-State Dipoles: The Challenging Case of Increasingly Long Push-Pull Oligomers

The change of molecular dipole moment induced by photon absorption is key to interpret the measured optical spectra. Except for compact molecules, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) remains the only theory allowing to quickly predict excited-state dipoles (μ^ES), albeit with a strong dependency on the selected exchange-correlation functional. This Letter presents the first assessment of the performances of the many-body Green's function Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) formalism for the evaluation of the μ^ES. We explore increasingly long push-pull oligomers as they present an excited-state nature evolving with system size. This work shows that BSE's μ^ES do present the same evolution with oligomeric length as their CC2 and CCSD counterparts, with a dependency on the starting exchange-correlation functional that is strongly decreased as compared to TD-DFT. This Letter demonstrates that BSE is a valuable alternative to TD-DFT for properties related to the excited-state density and not only for transition energies and oscillator strengths.
