Linking Experimental and Ab Initio Thermochemistry of Adsorbates with a Generalized Thermochemical Hierarchy

Importance sampling within configuration space integration for adsorbate thermophysical properties: a case study for CH3/Ni(111)

A new strategy is presented for computing anharmonic partition functions for the motion of adsorbates relative to a catalytic surface. Importance sampling is compared with conventional Monte Carlo. The importance sampling is significantly more efficient. This new approach is applied to CH3* on Ni(111) as a test case. The motion of methyl relative to the nickel surface is found to be anharmonic, with significantly higher entropy compared to the standard harmonic oscillator model. The new method is freely available as part of the Minima-Preserving Neural Network within the ADTHERM package.

Accurate Enthalpies of Formation for PFAS from First-Principles: Combining Different Levels of Theory in a Generalized Thermochemical Hierarchy

The enthalpies of formation are computed for a large number of per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using a connectivity-based hierarchy (CBH) approach. A combination of different electronic structure methods are used to provide the reference data in a hierarchical manner. The ANL0 method, in conjunction with the active thermochemical tables, provides enthalpies of formation for smaller species with subchemical accuracy. Coupled-cluster theory with explicit correlations are used to compute enthalpies of formation for intermediate species, based upon the ANL0 results. For the largest PFAS, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and heptafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (GenX), coupled-cluster theory with local correlations is used. The sequence of homodesmotic reactions proposed by the CBH are determined automatically by a new open-source code, AutoCBH. The results are the first reported enthalpies of formation for the majority of the species. A convergence analysis and global uncertainty quantification confirm that the enthalpies of formation at 0 K should be accurate to within ±5 kJ/mol. This new approach is not limited to PFAS, but can be applied to many chemical systems.

Computing accurate bond dissociation energies of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: Achieving chemical accuracy using connectivity-based hierarchy schemes

Understanding the bond dissociation energies (BDEs) of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) helps in devising their efficient degradation pathways. However, there is only limited experimental data on the PFAS BDEs, and there are uncertainties associated with the BDEs computed using density functional theory. Although quantum chemical methods like the G4 composite method can provide highly accurate BDEs (< 1 kcal mol-1), they are limited to small system sizes. To address DFT's accuracy limitations and G4's system size constraints, we examined the connectivity-based hierarchy (CBH) scheme and found that it can provide BDEs that are reasonably close to the G4 accuracy while retaining the computational efficiency of DFT. To further improve the accuracy, we modified the CBH scheme and demonstrated that BDEs calculated using it have a mean-absolute deviation of 0.7 kcal mol-1 from G4 BDEs. To validate the reliability of this new scheme, we computed the ground state free energies of seven PFAS compounds and BDEs for 44 C-C and C-F bonds at the G4 level of theory. Our results suggest that the modified CBH scheme can accurately compute the BDEs of both small and large PFAS at near G4 level accuracy, offering promise for more effective PFAS degradation strategies.

High-Throughput Predictions of Accurate Enthalpies of Formation for Larger Molecules Utilizing the Bond Difference Correction Method

The prediction of standard enthalpies of formation (EOFs) for larger molecules involves a trade-off between accuracy and cost, often resulting in non-negligible errors. The connectivity-based hierarchy (CBH) and simple bond additivity correction (BAC) are two promising means for evaluating EOFs, although they cannot achieve strict chemical accuracy. Calculated errors in the CBH are confirmed from accumulated systematic errors associated with bond differences in chemical environments. On the basis of a new set of bond descriptors, our developed bond difference correction (BDC) method effectively solves incremental errors with molecular size and inability applications for aromatic molecules. To balance the accuracy between non-aromatic and aromatic molecules, a more accurate BAC-based method with unpaired electrons and p hybrid orbitals (BAC-EP) is developed. With the incorporation of the two methods above, strict chemical accuracy by the largest deviation is achieved at low costs. These universal, ultrafast, and high-throughput methods greatly contribute to self-consistent thermodynamic parameters in combustion mechanisms.

Automated Generation of Microkinetics for Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reactions Considering Correlated Uncertainties

The study presents an ab-initio based framework for the automated construction of microkinetic mechanisms considering correlated uncertainties in all energetic parameters and estimation routines. 2000 unique microkinetic models were generated within the uncertainty space of the BEEF-vdW functional for the oxidation reactions of representative exhaust gas emissions from stoichiometric combustion engines over Pt(111) and compared to experiments through multiscale modeling. The ensemble of simulations stresses the importance of considering uncertainties. Within this set of first-principles-based models, it is possible to identify a microkinetic mechanism that agrees with experimental data. This mechanism can be traced back to a single exchange-correlation functional, and it suggests that Pt(111) could be the active site for the oxidation of light hydrocarbons. The study provides a universal framework for the automated construction of reaction mechanisms with correlated uncertainty quantification, enabling a DFT-constrained microkinetic model optimization for other heterogeneously catalyzed systems.
