Abstract
A family of non-empirical double-hybrid (DH) density functionals, such as Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE)0-DH, PBE-QIDH, and their range-separated exchange (RSX) versions RSX-0DH and RSX-QIDH, all using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE) exchange and correlationfunctionals, is applied here to calculate the excitation energies for increasingly longer linear and cyclic acenes as part of their intense benchmarking for excited states of all types. The energies for the two lowest-lying singlet 1La and 1Lb states of linear oligoacenes as well as the triplet 3La and 3Lb states, are calculated and compared with experimental results. These functionals clearly outperform the results obtained from hybrid functionals and favorably compare with other double-hybrid expressions also tested here, such as B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, ωB2-PLYP, and ωB2GP-PLYP. The study is complemented by the computation of adiabatic S0-T1 singlet-triplet energy difference for linear acenes as well as the extension of the study to strained cyclic oligomers, showing how the family of non-empirical expressions robustly leads to competitive results.

Abstract
The lowest bright electronic excitations of seven model linear cyanines (CN3-CN15) using 28 double-hybrid (DH) density functionals are benchmarked against accurate and recent CC3 results. Some of these DH functionals are recently designed specifically for excited electronic state calculations. In addition, CIS, CIS(D), SCS-CIS(D), and SOS-CIS(D) were also tested. Four different basis sets were used for the vertical electronic excitation calculations: cc-pVDZ, aug-cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ basis. Augmented basis sets (e.g. aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ) are found to be required for accurate and consistent results using DH functionals. The DH functionals tested in this work are classified into four main groups: global double-hybrids (GDH), range-separated double-hybrids (RSDH), spin-component and spin-opposite scaling global double-hybrids (SCS/SOS-GDH), and spin-component and spin-opposite scaling range-separated double-hybrids (SCS/SOS-RSDH). Within these groups, the SCS/SOS-RSDH group of functionals is found to provide the lowest mean absolute error (MAE) values (in the range 0.020-0.148 eV) in comparison with the GDH group (0.195-0.441 eV), the RSDH group (0.186-0.511 eV), and the SCS/SOS-GDH group (0.079-0.461 eV). Of all the DH functionals and ab initio methods investigated in the present contribution, the following functionals are found to be the most accurate and consistent: SCS-ωB2GPPLYP (MAE = 0.036 eV), SOS-ωB2GPPLYP (MAE = 0.020 eV), SOS-ωB88PP86 (MAE = 0.035 eV), and SOS-ωPBEPP86 (MAE = 0.037 eV). In general, the ab initio methods tested here show mediocre performance as compared to many DH functionals.

Abstract
Researchers carrying out calculations using the DFT method face the problem of the correct choice of the exchange-correlation functional to describe the quantities they are interested in. This article deals with benchmark calculations aimed at testing various exchange-correlation functionals in terms of a reliable description of the electron density distribution in molecules. For this purpose, 30 functionals representing all rungs of Jacob's Ladder are selected and then the values of some QTAIM-based parameters are compared with their reference equivalents obtained at the CCSD/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The presented results show that the DFT method undoubtedly has the greatest problems with a reliable description of the electron density distribution in multiple strongly polar bonds, such as C=O, and bonds associated with large electron charge delocalization. The performance of the tested functionals turned out to be unsystematic. Nevertheless, in terms of a reliable general description of QTAIM-based parameters, the M11, SVWN, BHHLYP, M06-HF, and, to a slightly lesser extent, also BLYP, B3LYP, and X3LYP functionals turned out to be the worst. It is alarming to find the most popular B3LYP functional in this group. On the other hand, in the case of the electron density at the bond critical point, being the most important QTAIM-based parameter, the M06-HF functional is especially discouraged due to the very poor description of the C=O bond. On the contrary, the VSXC, M06-L, SOGGA11-X, M06-2X, MN12-SX, and, to a slightly lesser extent, also TPSS, TPSSh, and B1B95 perform well in this respect. Particularly noteworthy is the overwhelming performance of double hybrids in terms of reliable values of bond delocalization indices. The results show that there is no clear improvement in the reliability of describing the electron density distribution with climbing Jacob's Ladder, as top-ranked double hybrids are also, in some cases, able to produce poor values compared to CCSD.

Abstract
The vertical excitation energies of 13 BODIPY based dye sensitizers are benchmarked by means of TD-DFT, using 36 functionals from different DFT rungs. Most TD-DFT results were found to overestimate the excitation energies, and show mean absolute error (MAE) values in the range 0.2–0.5 eV. The dispersion-corrected, spin-component-scaled, double-hybrid (DSD) functionals DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 were found to have the smallest MAE values of 0.083 eV and 0.106 eV, respectively, which is close to the range of average errors found in the more expensive coupled-cluster methods. Moreover, DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 functionals show excellent consistency and quality of results (standard deviation = 0.048 eV and 0.069 eV respectively). However, the range separated hybrid (RSH) and the range separated double hybrid (RSDH) functionals were found to provide the best predictability (linear determination coefficient R2 > 0.97 eV). The excitation energies of 13 BODIPY dye sensitizers are benchmarked by means of TD-DFT, using 36 functionals. Spin-component-scaled double-hybrid (DSD) functionals are found to show the best performance.![]()

Abstract
We investigate the relationships between electron-density and electronic-energy errors produced by modern exchange-correlation density-functional approximations belonging to all of the rungs of Perdew's ladder. To this aim, a panel of relevant (semi)local properties evaluated at critical points of the electron-density field (as defined within the framework of Bader's atoms-in-molecules theory) are computed on a large selection of molecular systems involved in thermodynamic, kinetic, and noncovalent interaction chemical databases using density functionals developed in a nonempirical and minimally and highly parametrized fashion. The comparison of their density- and energy-based performance, also discussed in terms of density-driven errors, casts light on the strengths and weaknesses of the most recent and efficient density-functional approximations.

Abstract
Following the work on spin-component and spin-opposite scaled (SCS/SOS) global double hybrids for singlet-singlet excitations by Schwabe and Goerigk [ J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2017, 13, 4307-4323] and our own works on new long-range corrected (LC) double hybrids for singlet-singlet and singlet-triplet excitations [ J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 4735-4744 and J. Chem. Phys. 2020, 153, 064106], we present new LC double hybrids with SCS/SOS that demonstrate further improvement over previously published results and methods. We introduce new unscaled and scaled versions of different global and LC double hybrids based on Becke88 or PBE exchange combined with LYP, PBE, or P86 correlation. For singlet-singlet excitations, we cross-validate them on six benchmark sets that cover small to medium-sized chromophores with different excitation types (local-valence, Rydberg, and charge transfer). For singlet-triplet excitations, we perform the cross-validation on three different benchmark sets following the same analysis as in our previous work in 2020. In total, 203 excitations are analyzed. Our results confirm and extend those of Schwabe and Goerigk regarding the superior performance of SCS and SOS variants compared to their unscaled parents by decreasing mean absolute deviations, root-mean-square deviations, or error spans by more than half and bringing absolute mean deviations closer to zero. Our SCS/SOS variants are shown to be highly efficient and robust for the computation of vertical excitation energies, which even outperform specialized double hybrids that also contain an LC in their perturbative part. In particular, our new SCS/SOS-ωPBEPP86 and SCS/SOS-ωB88PP86 functionals are four of the most accurate and robust methods tested in this work, and we fully recommend them for future applications. However, if the relevant SCS and SOS algorithms are not available to the user, we suggest ωPBEPP86 as the best unscaled method in this work.

Abstract
We investigate the performance of a set of recently introduced range-separated double-hybrid functionals, namely ωB2-PLYP, ωB2GP-PLYP, RSX-0DH, and RSX-QIDH models for hard-to-calculate excitation energies. We compare with the parent (B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, PBE0-DH, and PBE-QIDH) and other (DSD-PBEP86) double-hybrid models as well as with some of the most widely employed hybrid functionals (B3LYP, PBE0, M06-2X, and ωB97X). For this purpose, we select a number of medium-sized intra- and inter-molecular charge-transfer excitations, which are known to be challenging to calculate using time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) and for which accurate reference values are available. We assess whether the high accuracy shown by the newest double-hybrid models is also confirmed for those cases too. We find that asymptotically corrected double-hybrid models yield a superior performance, especially for the inter-molecular charge-transfer excitation energies, as compared to standard double-hybrid models. Overall, the PBE-QIDH and its corresponding range-separated RSX-QIDH functional are recommended for general-purpose TD-DFT applications, depending on whether long-range effects are expected to play a significant role.

Abstract
We comment on the results published by Ottochian et al. in J. Comput Chem. 2020, 41, 1242. Therein, the authors claim that the second-order, perturbative correlation correction applied to the time-dependent version of the PBE-QIDH global double-hybrid functional approximation (DHDFA) enables the description of charge-transfer (CT) excitations. Herein, we point out some inadvertent oversights related to what had already been previously known and achieved in the field of time-dependent DHDFAs. Exemplified for the same four systems that Ottochian et al. have used to analyze intermolecular CT excitations, we show how a systematic and unacceptably large redshift in global DHDFAs is rectified when using the latest long-range corrected DHDFAs published earlier in J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 4735.

Abstract
This account is written for general users of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods as well as chemists who are unfamiliar with the field. It includes a brief overview of conventional TD-DFT approaches and recommendations for applications to organic molecules based on our own experience. The main emphasis of this work, however, lies in providing the first in-depth review of time-dependent double-hybrid density functionals. They were first established in 2007 with very promising follow-up studies in the subsequent four years before developments or applications became scarce. The topic has regained more interest since 2017, and this account reviews those latest developments led by our group. These developments have shown unprecedented robustness for a variety of different types of electronic excitations when compared to more conventional TD-DFT methods. In particular, time-dependent double hybrids do not suffer from artificial ghost states and are able to reproduce exciton-coupled absorption spectra. Our latest methods include range separation and belong to the currently best TD-DFT methods for singlet-singlet excitations in organic molecules. While there is still room for improvement and further development in this space, we hope that this account encourages users to adjust their computational protocols to such new methods to provide more real-life testing and scenarios.

Abstract
We recently derived a new and simple route to the determination of the range-separation parameter in range-separated exchange hybrid and double-hybrid density functionals by imposing an additional constraint to the exchange-correlation energy to recover the total energy of the hydrogen atom [Brémond et al., J. Chem. Phys. 15, 201102 (2019)]. Here, we thoroughly assess this choice by statistically comparing the derived values of the range-separation parameters to the ones obtained using the optimal tuning (OT) approach. We show that both approaches closely agree, thus, confirming the reliability of ours. We demonstrate that it provides very close performances in the computation of properties particularly prone to the one- and many-electron self-interaction errors (i.e., ionization potentials). Our approach arises as an alternative to the OT procedure, conserving the accuracy and efficiency of a standard Kohn-Sham approach to density-functional theory computation.

Abstract
The attraction density functional theory (DFT) has for electronic structure theory is that it is easier to do computationally than ab initio, correlated wavefunction methods, due to its effective one-particle structure. On the contrary, ab initio theorists insist on the ability to converge to the right answer in appropriate limits, but this requires a treatment of the reduced two-particle density matrix. DFT avoids that by appealing to an "existence" theorem (not a constructive one) that all its effects are subsummed into a DFT functional of the one-particle density. However, the existence of thousands of DFT functionals emphasizes that there is no satisfactory way to systematically improve the Kohn-Sham (KS) version as most changes in parameterization or formulation seldom lead to a new functional that is genuinely better than others. Some researchers in the DFT community try to address this issue by imposing conditions rigorously derived from exact DFT considerations, but to date, no one has shown how this route will ever lead to converged results even for the ground state, much less for all the other electronic states obtained from time-dependent DFT that are critically important for chemistry. On the contrary, coupled-cluster (CC) theory and its equation-of-motion extensions provide rigorous results for both that KS-DFT methods are attempting to emulate. How to use them and their exact formal properties to tie CC theory to an effective one-particle form is the target of this perspective. This route addresses the devil's triangle of KS-DFT problems: the one-particle spectrum, self-interaction, and the integer discontinuity.

Abstract
The basic design principle for emitters exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is the minimization of the singlet-triplet gap. While typically this gap is positive, a possible inversion of states has been proposed as a pathway to improve the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes. Despite the efforts to design such emitters, there are very few reports indicating that it is at all possible. We analyze the problem of the gap inversion from the perspective of the electronic structure theory. The key result is that inversion is possible but requires a substantial contribution of double excitations and that commonly used cheap electronic structure methods would fail to predict it.

Abstract
Calculation of vertical excitation energies by the adiabatic linear-response time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) requires static Kohn-Sham potentials and exchange-correlation kernels. When these quantities are derived from standard density-functional approximations (DFA), mean absolute errors (MAE) of the method are known to range from 0.2 eV to over 1 eV, depending on the functional and type of excitation. We investigate how the performance of TDDFT varies when increasingly accurate exchange-correlation potentials derived from Hartree-Fock (HF) and post-HF wavefunctions are combined with different approximate kernels. The lowest MAEs obtained in this manner for valence excitations are about 0.15-0.2 eV, which appears to be the practical limit of the accuracy of TDDFT that can be achieved by improving the Kohn-Sham potentials alone. These findings are consistent with previous reports on the benefits of accurate exchange-correlation potentials in TDDFT, but provide new insights and afford more definitive conclusions.

Abstract
Analysis and interpretation of the electronic structure of excited electronic states are prerequisites for developing a fundamental understanding of photochemistry and optical properties of molecular systems and an everyday task for a computational photochemist. Hence, wavefunction-based and density-based analysis tools have been devised over the last decades, and most recently also a family of quantitative exciton-wavefunction based descriptors has been developed. While the latter represent the main focus of this perspective, they are also discussed in the context of other existing analysis methods. Exciton analysis bridges the gap between the physically intuitive exciton picture and complex quantum-chemical wavefunctions by yielding insightful quantitative descriptors like exciton size, hole and electron size, electron-hole distance and exciton correlation. Thereby, not only a comprehensive characterization of the electronic structure is provided, but moreover, the formalism is automatizable and thus also optimally suited for benchmarking excited-state electronic structure methods.

Abstract
On the basis of our previous developments in the field of nonempirical double hybrids, we present here a new exchange-correlation functional based on a range-separated model for the exchange part and integrating a nonlocal perturbative correction to the electron correlation contribution. Named RSX-QIDH, the functional is free from any kind of empirical parametrization. Its range-separation parameter is set to recover the total energy of the hydrogen atom, thus eliminating the self-interaction error for this one-electron system. Subsequent tests on some relevant benchmark data sets confirm that the self-interaction error is particularly low for RSX-QIDH. This new functional provides also correct dissociation profiles for charged rare-gas dimers and very accurate ionization potentials directly from Kohn-Sham orbital energies. Above all, these good results are not obtained at the expense of other properties. Indeed, further tests on standard benchmarks show that RSX-QIDH is competitive with the more empirical ωB97X-2 double hybrid and outperforms the parent LC-PBE long-range corrected hybrid, thus underlining the important role of the nonlocal perturbative correlation.
