Abstract
This paper introduces a spin-free formulation of the supporting subspace factorization [C. Song and T. J. Martínez, J. Chem. Phys. 149, 044108 (2018)], enabling a reduction in the computational scaling of the extended multi-state complete active space second-order perturbation (XMS-CASPT2) method for arbitrary spins. Compared to the original formulation that is defined in the spin orbitals and is limited to singlet states, the spin-free formulation in this work treats different spin states equivalently, thus naturally generalizing the idea beyond singlet states. In addition, we will present a new way of deriving the supporting subspace factorization with the purpose of understanding its physical interpretation. In this new derivation, we separate the sources that make CASPT2 difficult into the "same-site interactions" and "inter-site interactions." We will first show how the Kronecker sum can be used to remove the same-site interactions in the absence of inter-site interactions, leading to MP2 energy in dressed orbitals. We will then show how the inter-site interactions can be exactly recovered using Löwdin partition, where the supporting subspace concept will naturally arise. The new spin-free formulation maintains the main advantage of the supporting subspace factorization, i.e., allowing XMS-CASPT2 energies to be computed using highly optimized MP2 energy codes and Fock build codes, thus reducing the scaling of XMS-CASPT2 to the same scaling as MP2. We will present and discuss results that benchmark the accuracy and performance of the new method. To demonstrate how the new method can be useful in studying real photochemical systems, the supporting subspace XMS-CASPT2 is applied to a photoreaction sensitive to magnetic field effects. The new spin-free formulation makes it possible to calculate the doublet and quartet states required in this particular photoreaction mechanism.

Abstract
Although useful to extract excitation energies of states of double-excitation character in time-dependent density functional theory that are missing in the adiabatic approximation, the frequency-dependent kernel derived earlier [Maitra et al., J. Chem. Phys. 120, 5932 (2004)] was not designed to yield oscillator strengths. These are required to fully determine linear absorption spectra, and they also impact excited-to-excited-state couplings that appear in dynamics simulations and other quadratic response properties. Here, we derive a modified non-adiabatic kernel that yields both accurate excitation energies and oscillator strengths for these states. We demonstrate its performance on a model two-electron system, the Be atom, and on excited-state transition dipoles in the LiH molecule at stretched bond-lengths, in all cases producing significant improvements over the traditional approximations.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) are pivotal approaches for modeling electronically excited states of molecules. However, choosing a DFT exchange-correlation functional (XCF) among the myriad of alternatives is an overwhelming task that can affect the interpretation of results and lead to erroneous conclusions. The performance of these XCFs to describe the excited-state properties is often addressed by comparing them with high-level wave function methods or experimentally available vertical excitation energies; however, this is a limited analysis that relies on evaluation of a single point in the excited-state potential energy surface (PES). Different strategies have been proposed but are limited by the difficulty of experimentally accessing the electronic excited-state properties. In this work, we have tested the performance of 12 different XCFs and TD-DFT to describe the excited-state potential energy surface of Bodipy (2,6-diethyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyldipyrromethene difluoroborate). We compare those results with resonance Raman spectra collected by using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). By simultaneously fitting the absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, and all of the resonance Raman excitation profiles within the independent mode displaced harmonic oscillator (IMDHO) formalism, we can describe the PES at the Franck-Condon (FC) region and determine the solvent and intramolecular reorganization energy after relaxation. This allows a direct comparison of the TD-DFT output with experimental observables. Our analysis reveals that using vertical absorption energies might not be a good criterion to determine the best XCF for a given molecular system and that FSRS opens up a new way to benchmark the excited-state performance of XCFs of fluorescent dyes.

Abstract
Bodipy is one of the most versatile and studied functional dyes due to its myriad applications and tunable spectral properties. One of the strategies to adjust their properties is the formation of Bodipy dimers and oligomers whose properties differ significantly from the corresponding monomer. Recently, we have developed a novel strategy for synthesizing α,α-ethylene-bridged Bodipy dimers; however, their excited-state dynamics was heretofore unknown. This work presents the ultrafast excited-state dynamics of a novel α,α-ethylene-bridge Bodipy dimer and its monomeric parent. The dimer's steady-state absorption and fluorescence suggest a Coulombic interaction between the monomeric units' transition dipole moments (TDMs), forming what is often termed a "J-dimer". The excited-state properties of the dimer were studied using molecular excitonic theory and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We chose the M06 exchange-correlation functional (XCF) based on its ability to reproduce the experimental oscillator strength and resonance Raman spectra. Ultrafast laser spectroscopy reveals symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) in the dimer in polar solvents and the subsequent population of the charge-separated ion-pair state. The charge separation rate falls into the normal regime, while the charge recombination is in the inverted regime. Conversely, in nonpolar solvents, the charge separation is thermodynamically not feasible. In contrast, the monomer's excited-state dynamics shows no dependence on the solvent polarity. Furthermore, we found no evidence of significant structural rearrangement upon photoexcitation, regardless of the deactivation pathway. After an extensive analysis of the electronic transitions, we concluded that the solvent fluctuations in the local environment around the dimer create an asymmetry that drives and stabilizes the charge separation. This work sheds light on the charge-transfer process in this new set of molecular systems and how excited-state dynamics can be modeled by combining the experiment and theory.

Benchmarking two-photon absorption strengths of rhodopsin chromophore models with CC3 and CCSD methodologies: An assessment of popular density functional approximations. J Chem Phys 2023; 158:094106. Abstract
This work presents the investigations of the impact of an increasing electron correlation in the hierarchy of coupled-cluster methods, i.e., CC2, CCSD, and CC3, on two-photon absorption (2PA) strengths for the lowest excited state of the minimal rhodopsin's chromophore model-cis-penta-2,4-dieniminium cation (PSB3). For a larger chromophore's model [4-cis-hepta-2,4,6-trieniminium cation (PSB4)], CC2 and CCSD calculations of 2PA strengths were performed. Additionally, 2PA strengths predicted by some popular density functional theory (DFT) functionals differing in HF exchange contribution were assessed against the reference CC3/CCSD data. For PSB3, the accuracy of 2PA strengths increases in the following order: CC2 < CCSD < CC3, with the CC2 deviation from both higher-level methods exceeding 10% at 6-31+G* basis sets and 2% at aug-cc-pVDZ basis set. However, for PSB4, this trend is reversed and CC2-based 2PA strength is larger than the corresponding CCSD value. Among the DFT functionals investigated, CAM-B3LYP and BHandHLYP provide 2PA strengths in best compliance with reference data, however, with the error approaching an order of magnitude.

Abstract
We report ground- and excited-state dipole moments and oscillator strengths (computed in different "gauges" or representations) of full configuration interaction (FCI) quality using the selected configuration interaction method known as Configuration Interaction using a Perturbative Selection made Iteratively (CIPSI). Thanks to a set encompassing 35 ground- and excited-state properties computed in 11 small molecules, the present near-FCI estimates allow us to assess the accuracy of high-order coupled-cluster (CC) calculations including up to quadruple excitations. In particular, we show that incrementing the excitation degree of the CC expansion (from CC with singles and doubles (CCSD) to CC with singles, doubles, and triples (CCSDT) or from CCSDT to CC with singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples (CCSDTQ)) reduces the average error with respect to the near-FCI reference values by approximately 1 order of magnitude.

Abstract
Understanding the excited-state properties of luminescent biomolecules is of central importance to their biophysical applications. In this study, we develop the Electrostatically Embedded Generalized Molecular Fractionation with Conjugate Caps (EE-GMFCC) method for quantitatively characterizing properties of covalently bonded systems with localized excitations (i.e., involving a single chromophore), such as fluorescent proteins. The excitation energy, transition dipole moment, and oscillator strength of wild-type Green Fluorescent Protein (wt-GFP) calculated by EE-GMFCC are found to be in excellent agreement with full system time-dependent density functional theory results. We also applied the Polarized Protein-Specific Charge model to wt-GFP, and found that electronic polarization of the protein is critical in stabilizing hydrogen bonding interactions in wt-GFP, which influences its absorption spectrum. The predicted absorption spectra of wt-GFP in the A and B states qualitatively agree with experiment. The fragmentation approach further allows a straightforward per residue decomposition of the excitation which reveals the influence of the protein environment on the absorption spectra of wt-GFP A and B states. Our results demonstrate that the EE-GMFCC method is both accurate and efficient for excited-state property calculations on proteins.

Determining conical intersection
geometries is of key importance
to understanding the photochemical reactivity of molecules. While
many small- to medium-sized molecules can be treated accurately using
multireference approaches, larger molecules require a less computationally
demanding approach. In this work, minimum energy crossing point conical
intersection geometries for a series of molecules have been studied
using spin-flip TDDFT (SF-TDDFT), within the Tamm-Dancoff Approximation,
both with and without explicit calculation of nonadiabatic coupling
terms, and compared with both XMS-CASPT2 and CASSCF calculated geometries.
The less computationally demanding algorithms, which do not require
explicit calculation of the nonadiabatic coupling terms, generally
fare well with the XMS-CASPT2 reference structures, while the relative
energetics are only reasonably replicated with the MECP structure
as
calculated with the BHHLYP functional and full nonadiabatic coupling
terms. We also demonstrate that, occasionally, CASSCF structures deviate
quantitatively from the XMS-CASPT2 structures, showing the importance
of including dynamical correlation.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of functionalized isoindigo compounds by reaction of isoindigo with (S)-glycidyl tosylate, epibromohydrin, 2-(bromomethyl)-1-(arylsulfonyl)aziridine, and 2-(bromomethyl)-1-(alkylsulfonyl)aziridine in the presence of MeONa proceed under mild conditions in moderate yields. (3Z,3'Z)-3,3'-(Ethane-1,2-diylidene)bis(1-(oxiran-2-ylmethyl)indolin-2-one), with an extended central olefin π-conjugated moiety was also reacted with methyl-oxiranes to give the corresponding N,N'-disubstituted derivative. Calculations with DFT and TD-DFT of hypothetical isoindigo-thiophene DA molecules with various electron withdrawing substituents, including aziridine, oxirane, nitrile, carbonyl, and sulfonate, indicated that the proximity and strength of the functional group have a significant effect on the HOMO, LUMO, vertical excitation energy, and oscillator strength of the π-π* transitions.
